Overview

North central is the fastest growing sector of AISD.

North central elementary schools exceed their capacity by 2,562 students.

North central middle schools are below functional capacity with more than 778 empty seats.

North central overcrowding represents a safety and security concern in the common areas for our students.

The Austin Independent School District is taking several steps to address overcrowding by making better use of existing facility capacity.

18

Why is the district making these changes?

AISD is committed to providing a quality education for all students in a healthy and safe environment. At this time, there are significant deficiencies in seating capacity for students in north central elementary schools and a surplus of seats in north central middle schools. By addressing overcrowding issues, the district will be better able to support current and future students.

Page 19: North Central Elementary School Overcrowding

19

Will pre-kindergarten students interact with the older kids on campus?

At Dobie and Webb, all services (classroom, bathroom, lunchrooms, gym, etc.) for pre-kindergarten students will be separate from the main school. Pre-kindergarten students also will have a different schedule than students attending the middle school at Dobie and Webb.

Page 20: North Central Elementary School Overcrowding

20

Will transportation be provided for students who have been reassigned to Dobie, Reilly

or Webb? Yes. Students who reside more than two miles from

their home school will continue to receive transportation services to and from their home schools.

The district will provide AISD shuttle buses to transport all students from their home schools to their new location in the morning and back to their home schools in the afternoon.

Parents can also transport students directly to their new assignment school.

Page 21: North Central Elementary School Overcrowding

21

What specific communication steps are being taken to inform school communities

affected by the changes? Each school has already scheduled principal-led

meetings with teachers, parents, CAC and the PTA groups. For information on scheduled specific dates please contact campus principal or parent support specialist.

The district will communicate with staff members and families through letters, meetings, the district website, fliers, school messenger calls, media outreach, Channel 22 programming, community meetings and outreach lead by the schools’ parent support specialists.

Page 22: North Central Elementary School Overcrowding

22
