Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Carers,
Staff Appreciation Dinner
All of the Normanhurst staff members are very much looking forward to the Staff Appreciation Dinner this Friday
night. Thank you to the P & C Fundraising Committee, led by Emma Veale, for coordinating this event. It is a
lovely gesture to recognise all staff and we are sure it will be a fun event.
2019 Planning
This term we are planning for 2019 classes. To assist in this process, it is most helpful if we have accurate
student numbers. If your child will not be returning to Normanhurst Public School in 2019, please send written
advice of this to me as soon as possible.
If you have particular information related to your child’s 2019 placement of which you feel we need to be aware,
please put this in writing (letter or email) addressed to myself and ensure I receive it prior to Friday 16
November at the absolute latest. Please note that changes will not be made after classes are formed so if you
have any information you wish to be considered we need to be advised of it now. If you have submitted such

requests in the past, you will need to re-submit these for 2019. It is also important that the information is
received in writing and directed to me, as verbal requests to class teachers will not be considered.
Please note, this is not a process to request specific teachers. Assumptions should also not be made that
teachers will necessarily be teaching the same year level in 2019 as they have previously. All of our teachers
are qualified to teach K-6 and allocations are made based on preferences teachers submit to me and the
overall effective operation of the school.
The written requests we do receive prior to the deadline will be considered when forming classes for next year.
However, in the context of many factors needing to be addressed, we cannot necessarily meet all requests.
Selective High School Applications
Last term I distributed information to all Year 5 students regarding the Selective High School application
process. Please remember that all applications must be completed by Monday 12 November. No late
applications can be accepted. The online application can be accessed at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-
schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7. Please also remember to return the note
indicating that you intend to apply so that school assessment scores can be prepared.
Tell Them from Me Parent Survey
Thank you to all of the families who completed the Tell Them from Me Parent Survey this year. Mr Sheridan will
be presenting the survey results at next week’s P & C meeting, to be held on Monday 29 October.
Opportunity Class Results
Last week I received the results of Opportunity Class applications for 2019. We only had a very small number of
applicants and, of those, two students have been placed on reserve lists for an offer.
Head Lice
We continue to have cases of head lice at our school. Head lice are one of the most commonly reported health
complaints from parents and teachers and anyone can catch head lice regardless of how clean their hair is. The
lice move from one person’s head to another via direct contact with hair. To support the reduction of this
problem we ask that you:
check your child’s hair regularly for lice
where your child has long hair, ensure they wear it tied back (ideally in a plait, braid or bun) for school or
when around other children
encourage the use of a fine tooth head lice comb after hair is washed
encourage your child to avoid head to head contact with others
Kindergarten Transition Program
Our Transition Program for Kindergarten 2019 commences on Thursday 8 November with an information
session for parents and activities for the children. Only those children for whom we have a completed enrolment
form are able to participate in the sessions. If you have not yet enrolled your child please do so prior to the 8
November. If you are aware of neighbours or friends who are yet to enrol, your assistance in passing on this
message is appreciated. We are looking forward to welcoming these new students to Normanhurst Public
School.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
During this fortnight all classes are revising expectations for the playground and how our three school values
apply in this setting. The Week 1 recipients of our PBL draw were Sarina S and Tom O.

Art at Normanhurst Recently students at Normanhurst Public School had the opportunity to enter the NSW Art Gallery’s
“Screenshot” Photography Competition (junior category). We are very excited and proud to announce that
Owen K. has received a Highly Commended award for his photograph ‘Identity’. Owen has won two tickets to
the NSW Art Gallery’s summer exhibition, Masters of modern art from the Hermitage, and, will be attending a
formal prize presentation ceremony at the Gallery. Please join us in congratulating Owen.
Owen’s entry titled “Identity”
Each year the students at Normanhurst Public School have the opportunity to enter artworks for possible
selection in the NSW Department of Education’s Cultural Diversity Calendar. This year we are excited and
proud to announce that the artwork “Light up Freddy” by Gemma M. has been shortlisted for inclusion in a new
online art gallery. The online art gallery will be featured on the Department of Education website and will
showcase a range of artworks from primary and secondary students. Please join us in congratulating Gemma.

P&C News
Friday 26 October Staff Appreciation Dinner
Monday 29 October P&C AGM
Staff Appreciation Dinner
I am looking forward to seeing you at this Friday’s Staff Appreciation Dinner. Thank you to Emma V. and the
Fundraising sub-committee for all the hard work that has gone on behind the scenes to organise this special
event. It is important that we make time to show all our staff how much their work is valued and I am grateful for
the opportunity to share an evening with them.
AGM
Please take note of the upcoming P&C AGM. At the AGM all members of the current committee will be stepping
down from their present roles. The P&C provides important services to our school (the canteen, the uniform
shop, the band) as well as helping to create a friendly social environment for parents and children through
numerous fundraising and social activities. The funds that we collectively raise are put to excellent use
providing resources which add value to our children’s classroom and school experience. If you are passionate
about maintaining these valuable services and activities, please consider what you might be able to offer in
2019. There are plenty of roles to go around and, whilst you are encouraged to make the role your own, you will
also be given a supportive and detailed ‘hand-over’ by those stepping down from their roles.
Standard descriptions of the roles of the president, secretary and treasurer may be found here:
https://www.pandc.org.au/faqs/. A copy of the constitution and procedure for making applications for P&C
money to be spent can also be found on our webpage.
If you have not yet spoken or written to me, but would like to be considered for a role on the P&C please feel
free to do so. I would like to work with you to ensure that everyone who would like to be considered for a role on
the P&C has the opportunity to be heard on Monday night.
Christmas Gift Charity
Each year for the past few years, I have suggested a charity which the P&C might support at our Christmas
singing event. In the past, we have supported the Hornsby Women’s Shelter and I would be very happy to
continue to do this, however I also wondered whether this year we might consider a drought-relief charity and
(to this end) wondered whether you would like to send me some suggestions ahead of the meeting in Week 3,
Term 4.
My last newsletter entry
I believe that this is the last newsletter entry that I shall write as your P&C President. I would like to re-iterate
my thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement this year. I have been very grateful to everyone
who has taken to time to write or speak to me about my role. It has been a privilege to serve you and to have
had the opportunity to work with the School on your behalf. I hope that you and your children continue to
flourish at our wonderful NPS. I wish the new president all the very best.

My time as your Canteen Coordinator has come to an end. Having served the maximum term of 3 years in this
role, on Monday night’s P&C meeting I will not be standing for re-election. It has been an honour and a
privilege to serve on the P&C and in the Canteen, and I look forward to continuing to support the school in other
ways. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me and given their time to assist in the Canteen,
especially those on the sub-committee. I will be around to support the Canteen and the new Committee and
P&C and look forward to seeing the P&C grow and change.
If you have any questions in relation to this, or other canteen matters, please get in touch.
