Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

Staff Appreciation Dinner

A great night was had by all at the Staff Appreciation Dinner on Friday! It was a wonderful way to celebrate the

dedication of all Normanhurst PS staff in a relaxed atmosphere. Thank you to Emma Veale and the Fundraising

Team for coordinating the event and to Andrew Veldon from Magpies Waitara for the great venue. Thank you to

all of the parents who attended and offered kind words of thanks.

Electronic permission note trial

This term we are trialling a new feature on our School app that enables permission notes to be returned

electronically. We will conduct this trial with the Obstacle-a-thon permission note this term as this note needs to

be returned for all students. When you receive the note this week, you can elect to either return the paper

permission note as per the usual process, or to go into the “e-Forms” section of our app and complete the

permission section electronically. This will enable us to see how effective this process is and if any issues need

to be resolved prior to implementing electronic permission notes more broadly next year. Remember you still

have the option of completing the paper form if desired.

ensured these services continue to be of a high standard whilst also working to adopt new Department of

Education policies and procedures. The Fundraising Committee has also done a stellar job this year and,

without their dedicated efforts, there would be limited opportunity to support school projects financially.

Welcome to the new Committee members and thank you to everyone who nominated themselves for a position.

A full list of positions is included in the P & C section of this newsletter. We look forward to working with this

new team over the coming year.

Update on Playground Project

The Department of Education tender process for the playground project has now closed and we should have

some advice on the start date for the project within the next week or two. I will keep you updated as information

is available.

Music Count Us In

This week our school is participating in the ‘Music Count Us In’ event. This is where all schools across Australia

who have been part of the program sing the same song at the same time. All of our students K-6 have been

learning this song over the last month or so and it has also been our morning bell over the last couple of weeks.

Thank you to Mrs Clarke Brisot who has coordinated our school’s participation in this event.

Premier’s Spelling Bee

Best wishes to Julian N who is competing in the State Final of the Premier’s Spelling Bee this Friday. Julian has

already demonstrated amazing spelling skills throughout the various stages of this competition and we wish him

all the best.

2019 Planning

This term we are planning for 2019 classes. To assist in this process, it is most helpful if we have accurate

student numbers. If your child will not be returning to Normanhurst Public School in 2019, please send written

advice of this to me as soon as possible.

If you have particular information related to your child’s 2019 placement of which you feel we need to be aware,

please put this in writing (letter or email) addressed to myself and ensure I receive it prior to Friday 16

November at the absolute latest. Please note that changes will not be made after classes are formed so if you

have any information you wish to be considered we need to be advised of it now. If you have submitted such

requests in the past, you will need to re-submit these for 2019. It is also important that the information is

received in writing and directed to me, as verbal requests to class teachers will not be considered.

Please note, this is not a process to request specific teachers. Assumptions should also not be made that

teachers will necessarily be teaching the same year level in 2019 as they have previously. All of our teachers

are qualified to teach K-6 and allocations are made based on preferences teachers submit to me and the

overall effective operation of the school.

The written requests we do receive prior to the deadline will be considered when forming classes for next year.

However, in the context of many factors needing to be addressed, we cannot necessarily meet all requests.

Selective High School Applications

Last term I distributed information to all Year 5 students regarding the Selective High School application

process. Please remember that all applications must be completed by Monday 12 November. No late

applications can be accepted. The online application can be accessed at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-

schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7. Please also remember to return the note

indicating that you intend to apply so that school assessment scores can be prepared.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

During this fortnight all classes are revising expectations for the playground and how our three school values

apply in this setting. The Week 2 recipients of our PBL draw were Stanley F and Minh L.

Dance Groups 2019

Calling all dancers! Are you interested in being involved in the Junior, Senior or Boys’ Dance Group next year?

If you are currently in Years 2-5 and would like to express your interest, then please meet Ms Moore and Ms

Tilney outside the office at first half lunch on Tuesday 13 November.

The Dance Groups will perform at a variety of events and represent our school with pride. Being involved in

dance at Normanhurst is a wonderful opportunity that gives you a chance to showcase your talents and be part

of a wonderful team.

Auditions for all the Dance Groups will be held very early in Term 1 next year.

We are looking forward to another sensational year of dance in 2019.

Green Team News

The Green Team meets every Monday at second half lunch up near the top oval. They have been harvesting all

term patiently waiting for crops to grow. With all the rain that has come down in the past couple of weeks, our

Green Team was finally able to taste the fruits of their labour! Using the lettuce from our garden, we made

Crunchy Noodle Salad! As you can see, the students enjoyed eating it!

Year 2 will attend on Tuesday and Year 1 will attend Wednesday. Students must be at school by 9.00 a.m. as departure by bus will be soon after the bell. Although we anticipate being back before the end of the school day, please be mindful that our return can be impacted by unforeseen circumstances.

Peer Support Our enthusiastic Peer Support leaders have been doing an outstanding job leading the rest of our students

through some interesting and engaging activities.

Our program this year focuses on promoting harmony, and so far our student leaders have led sessions around

Values, Showing you care and Caring for friends. Peer Support will continue next week with a focus on

discussing what respect means, and how students can demonstrate respect for others.

A big thank you as well, to both Ms Bridie Moore and Ms Stephanie De Palo, for all their work in supporting our

Year 5 and 6 students to deliver this outstanding program.

Kind regards,

Stephen Sheridan

Assistant Principal

New P&C President Hello and thank you for electing me to be your P & C President. It is a great honour for me to take on this role,

with a completely new team who I’m excited to meet and discuss fresh ideas and goals for us to achieve in the

coming years. I’d like to extend my thanks on behalf of our school community to the outgoing committee for

their dedication, hard work and many, many years of service to our school. These are big shoes to fill and we

look forward to building on your success in the future.

I am keen to take on a collaborative approach to this role, welcoming input of ideas from parents and carers in

our school. Our meetings in week 3 & 8 each term will be a sounding board for your ideas as we work to

facilitate these ventures on your behalf. Keep an eye out in next week’s newsletter to find out more about how

we can further improve communication between our committee and parent, carer and volunteer community

which is key to building on this success.

Thank you again, to committee members present and past for assisting to make this transition a seamless and

rewarding opportunity.

Christmas Charity

At last night’s general meeting following the AGM it was agreed that the P&C would promote the support of a charity at the end-of-year carols event and match community donations up to $250.

P&C Social and Fundraising Staff Appreciation Dinner

One of the highlights of my year has been hosting our annual Staff Appreciation Dinner which was held at

Magpies Waitara on Friday evening. It was lovely to share an evening of celebrations with our NPS Staff and

I’m grateful for everyone who attended. Our P&C President Elly Cowan gave a heartfelt thank you to the Staff

on our behalf and I’d like to just share this snippet with you - “Teaching is so much more than a profession – it

is truly a vocation: a calling. A calling to serve some of the most vulnerable members of our community at their

most impressionable. A calling to foster their eager and willing minds – to take our children on an amazing

adventure which will shape their lives as they grow and mature”.

Thank you to Ms Gorrell and the entire NPS Staff. “Happy Teachers Day” and every day in between.

Friday 16 November – Obstacle-a-thon

Our last major fundraiser for 2018 is coming in November, just in time for the warm weather. We had so much

fun last year, so we thought we’d do it all again! Only with more fun, more prizes and more water! Stay tuned

for your permission note and sponsorship form.

Fundraising Coordinator 2019 Welcome to our new 2019 Fundraising Coordinator – Pam Gins. Congratulations on your new role Pam. Pam will be taking over from me as Fundraising Coordinator after the Obstacle-a-thon mid November. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences with Pam and hearing all about what wonderful events her team is planning for next year.
