2020 Classes and Staffing Students went into their 2020 classes last Thursday and have settled in well to new routines. Our 2020 Kindergarten students commenced in their classes on Monday following their Best Start Interviews last week. A full list of 2020 staffing is provided with this newsletter.

Novel Coronavirus

As per our ongoing communication with families via email and the school app, please see included in this newsletter the latest government requirements regarding novel coronavirus. We thank you for your cooperation. Parent Information Evening Our 2020 Parent Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 18 February. A note has been distributed to students today regarding arrangements and times for these sessions. We encourage all parents / carers to attend. School Community Charter and Communication Procedures Included in this newsletter is a copy of the School Community Charter released by the Department of Education. The Charter formalises partnerships with parents and carers and focuses on ensuring respectful and positive environments for all public schools. This also links to our Normanhurst Public School Communication Procedures, a copy of which is also included in this newsletter. Please take the time to read over these documents. Class Parents Every year we ask a parent from each class to take on the role of Class Parent. The purpose of this role is to facilitate communication between teachers and parents and assist in the coordination of helpers for school activities and events. More detailed information about the role is included later in this newsletter. If you wish to volunteer for the Class Parent role for your child’s class, please send an email to the school ([email protected]) by Friday 14 February stating your name, your child’s name and class, and “Class Parent Nomination” as the subject line. Where there is more than one volunteer for a class, the school will draw a name randomly. Meeting with staff The Normanhurst PS staff members are more than happy to meet with you to answer any enquiry you may have regarding your child. We value highly working in partnership with parents to achieve the best outcomes for students. It is generally appropriate to make an appointment time if you need to meet with a staff member, as they have many commitments to meetings, duties and extra-curricular activities before and after class time. By making a time to meet they will be able to respond to your enquiry appropriately. Appointments can be made by phoning the school office on 9489 1152; emailing the school at [email protected] marked attention to the relevant staff member; or sending a note with your child. Enquiries related to your child’s learning or wellbeing should be directed to the class teacher or relevant RFF or support teacher in the first instance. If your enquiry is broader or you feel it has not been addressed to your satisfaction, you are then able to direct it to the appropriate Assistant Principal (Early Stage 1 & Stage 1 – Ms Williams; Stage 2 – Ms De Palo; Stage 3 – Mr Sheridan). If you wish to discuss a matter of a sensitive nature, you may also wish to make an appointment with me.

Be Responsible. Be Respectful. Strive for Success.

Volunteers: Working with Children Check Normanhurst Public School enjoys very active participation from our parent body. We are extremely grateful for the support of parents who volunteer their time to assist with school programs, as many of our programs could not operate as successfully without parental involvement. If you will be volunteering at Normanhurst PS this year in any capacity which places you in contact with students, such as with literacy groups, fitness activities, in the canteen or the like, Department of Education procedures require you to complete a Working with Children Declaration form and identity check. If you already completed this anytime from 2016-2019, you do not need to do it again this year. For those parents / carers who have not yet completed it, please pop into the office between 8.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m. Monday-Friday and the office staff will assist you to complete the check. Unfortunately legal requirements do not allow us to have volunteers on the school site who have not completed this documentation.

Term 1 Dates All dates for Term 1 are available on the “Events” section of our Skoolbag app if you are looking to plan ahead for the term. A term calendar is also published in this newsletter. Student Leadership Camp This week our School Captains and Vice Captains: Annemieke T, Joshua P, Grace M and Max C, are attending a Leadership Camp with other student leaders from our area. The activities at the camp will focus on leadership development as well as a project that our leaders will implement when they return to school. I am sure the camp will be very worthwhile for these students. Positive Behaviour for Learning Our school implements the Positive Behaviour for Learning program in both the playground and classroom settings. This week all classes will be discussing our school values of Be Responsible, Be Respectful and Strive for Success and how these relate to expectations at our school. Kind regards, Amber Gorrell Principal ________________________________________________________________________________________ Update advice for Parents – 2 February 2020 Current advice from the Australian Government Department of Health for parents in regards to the Novel Coronavirus is:

• Any student and staff arriving in Australia from 1 February 2020 who has been in mainland China or transited through mainland China (not just Hubei province) is excluded from school and child care services for a period of 14 days from the date they left mainland China as the Novel Coronavirus’ incubation period can be as long as two weeks.

• Any confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus will be excluded until they are medically cleared to return • Close contact of a confirmed case of Novel Coronavirus will be excluded for 14 days since last contact

with the confirmed case. • Any student and staff arriving before 1 February our previous advice remains that students and staff who

were in Hubei province are excluded from school or child care services for 14 days, and those who were in the rest of China are requested not to not attend school or child care services for a period of 14 days after leaving China.

• More information can be found at NSW Health.

Students who returned to Australia from mainland China more than 14 days ago and have shown no symptoms are able to return to school. The Ministry of Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia. Advice about not attending school would be provided to these close contacts by the Ministry of Health.

Be Responsible. Be Respectful. Strive for Success.

There has been a small number of confirmed cases of novel coronavirus in NSW. Consistent with current guidelines, staff and students who are unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with our current practice if any child becomes unwell we will implement our infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided by the Ministry of Health as appropriate. The Department of Education will continue to work with the Ministry of Health to monitor and respond to the unfolding international novel coronavirus situation. ________________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________________ Homework

At Normanhurst Public School there is a consistent approach to homework across the school. In Week 3, students will complete homework activities in class guided by their teacher. This will provide them with information and skills in order to complete and set out their homework more independently when they complete it at home. Homework will commence in Week 4 and at Parent information Evening, teachers will outline arrangements for homework.

Lost Property If your child has misplaced any belongings please check our lost property bin located just outside the front office. All lost property items that have not been claimed have been donated to the uniform shop clothing pool. Please label all your child’s belongings with their full name and current class so we can return it back to them. So many items of clothing are not labelled with student names and sadly many items are never returned. Please help us with keeping lost property to a minimum and label your child’s clothing! Below are items in our lost property drawer. Please come to the school office to claim these items. Items that are not claimed will be donated to charity at the end of Term 1.

Kind regards, Alice Bell School Administrative Manager ________________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________________ 2020 Senior Choir Auditions Normanhurst will again have a Senior Choir Group for students in Years 3-6 this year. Our students participate in numerous events both externally and internally. We are looking for committed and excited students who love to sing and represent our school with pride. All students who are interested in being a part of the Senior Choir are to meet on Wednesday 12 February in 4/5V. If the number of interested students in Years 4, 5 & 6 exceeds the proposed numbers to attend the Arts Alive Primary Choral Concert 2020, then we will be holding a short audition during this time. Please meet Ms Bell and Ms Mafi in 4/5V during the first half of lunch. Ms Emily Bell and Ms Vaianna Mafi Senior Choir Coordinators ________________________________________________________________________________________ 2020 Debating Expressions of Interest We are looking for students who are interested in becoming members of Normanhurst Public School’s Debating Team. If you enjoy public speaking, current affairs and being an active team member, then come along to 4/5V on Tuesday 11 February. Please keep in mind that there are limited numbers within the Debating Team. This allows students to be involved in an adequate amount of debates throughout the year. Students will be required to prepare and deliver a short impromptu speech that will assist us in effectively matching available positions. Please meet Ms Harrison and Ms Mafi in 4/5V during the first half of lunch. Ms Fiona Harrison and Ms Vaianna Mafi Debating Coordinators ________________________________________________________________________________________ Dance News 2020 Boys’ Dance Group Expression of Interest This year, Normanhurst will be offering a Boys’ Dance Group for male students in Years 3-6. Being involved in Dance at Normanhurst is a wonderful opportunity that gives students a chance to showcase their talents and be part of a wonderful team. Boys in Years 3-6 who would like to join the dance group are to meet with Ms Patel and Ms Stewart on Thursday 13 February outside of KS at first half of lunch. Looking forward to another sensational year of dance at Normanhurst. Ms Patel and Ms Stewart Dance Coordinators

On behalf of the P&C, welcome to all of the new families joining our NPS community. Our P&C has an active role in coordinating fundraising and social events for our school and we meet twice per term in Weeks 3 and 8 on a Monday evening at 7.30 p.m. in the school staffroom (near the library). Everyone is welcome to come and join our friendly conversation. Over the school holidays, it was great to see some of our funding be put to good use, with completion of the lower playground Astro-Turf and 5 classrooms having new smart boards installed. Ian, our grounds coordinator ran a successful working bee to start our year afresh. Thank you to the Air, Kerr, Monardo, Riordan, Veldon, Jackson, Watts, Jangra, Jorquera and Primmer families who spent the last day of their holidays tidying our grounds. Our calendar of events for 2020 will be published in next week’s newsletter. Information for the new families The School Canteen is open Wednesday to Friday each week and is managed by Lisa Pang. She does a wonderful job ensuring we have “healthy and fresh” food options available to our children each of those days. How to Order We use a platform called School24 www.school24.net.au. All the lunch ordering and special event days is done through this online system. Please “Register” and create a Parent account for yourself (then add your Child/ren) if you have never used this system before. Our School ID number is 2567963. The orders are printed and prepared by Lisa and her team of weekly volunteers. Over-the-counter service is provided for students at recess and lunchtime for snacks and drinks. Returning families Please remember to change your Child's class on your School24 account. As we cannot do this for you, and we want to ensure all the lunches get sent to the correct new classrooms. Class parents play an important role in the school. They facilitate communication between teachers and parents and assist in the coordination of helpers for school activities and events.

Key parts of the role:

• Organising a voluntary class contact list of parent names and details and communicating with parents through a few emails throughout the year

• Coordinating parent support to the class teacher (e.g. finding literacy group helpers) • Organising a couple of class social activities during the year • Supporting P & C fundraising activities • Reading the school newsletter and other school communication to assist with dissemination of information

and answering questions • Attending any Class Parent meetings (generally held no more than once per term)

Please note:

• When communicating with parents blind copy (BCC) or distribution lists should be used in all emails for class distribution. The class teacher should also be blind copied into the email where appropriate.

• Parent details, including email addresses and phone numbers, should NOT be distributed to others without the permission of the parent whose details you are providing

• All communications with or about the school, students, staff and other parents should be respectful • Contact details collected for the voluntary class contact list should only be used for communication that

relates directly to the Class Parent position and its key roles as detailed above

NORMANHURST PUBLIC SCHOOL ROLE OF A CLASS PARENT

Be Responsible. Be Respectful. Strive for Success.

NORMANHURST PUBLIC SCHOOL

COMMUNICATION PROCEDURES

At Normanhurst Public School we welcome and encourage parent contributions and involvement and recognise we are more likely to achieve successful learning outcomes for our students when this occurs. We expect all members of our school community to interact in a respectful manner, whether communication is face-to-face or via telephone, email or social media. This provides good modelling for children; assists in building positive partnerships between school and home; and promotes all members of our school community being treated with dignity and respect. SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

- Our school newsletter “Normanhurst News” is issued weekly on Wednesdays within each school term. The newsletter can be accessed via our school website and our school app. It is also emailed to parents (provided the school holds your current email address) and can be collected as a paper copy from the Administration Office if required.

- The newsletter contains important information and is our school’s main means of communication. Families are expected to read the newsletter each week to receive information from school.

PROCEDURES FOR VOLUNTEERS - When visiting the school (other than general drop-off / pick-up / school event circumstances),

parents / carers and other visitors need to sign in at the Administration Office and collect a visitor lanyard. On their departure, they need to sign out and return this lanyard.

- All volunteers who are working with our students (e.g. classroom helpers, canteen volunteers) need to complete a Working with Children Declaration and a 100-point identity check at the Administration Office prior to performing these roles.

ADMINISTRATION OFFICE - Our Administration Office and school telephone line is open from 8.30 a.m. until 3.30 p.m.

Enquiries via telephone or in person need to be made within these hours unless alternative arrangements have been made in advance.

EMAIL - Parents are able to contact staff members via the school email address or via a staff member’s

individual Department of Education email address if they have chosen to distribute it. - All staff are expected to check their emails at least once on each day they are at work. Please

note staff may not be able to access emails when they are on leave and part-time staff are not expected to check emails on days they do not work.

- Staff are expected to respond to emails within 48 hours of receiving them. Please note emails sent after 3.30 p.m. will likely not be received until the next working day.

- Email should not be used for urgent matters. In these cases please contact the Administration Office via telephone. Pick-up arrangements should be communicated to your child prior to school start time wherever possible to avoid needing to ask the office staff to pass on messages in relation to this.

- Class email distribution lists should only be used for communication that relates directly to the Class Parent position and its key roles detailed in the “Normanhurst Public School Role of a Class Parent” document (Appendix 1). Parents / carers responding to such emails should also be mindful that group emails are not an appropriate forum for discussion of personal issues or to air grievances about issues related to the school.

Be Responsible. Be Respectful. Strive for Success.

SOCIAL MEDIA

- Photographs of children other than your own or of staff members or parents / carers should not be posted on any social media platform without obtaining permission of the people contained in the photographs.

- Social media in any form should not be used to make statements about staff members or to air grievances about issues related to the school. Publishing material that identifies particular staff members through names, photographs, titles or descriptions and is damaging to their reputation may be subject to the law of defamation.

MEETINGS BETWEEN PARENTS / CARERS AND STAFF - Where a parent / carer wishes to meet with a staff member, they should make a mutually

convenient appointment time. - Requests for an appointment can be made via email, phoning the school or approaching the

relevant staff member. Parents and carers should not contact staff members on their personal phone numbers and staff members are discouraged from distributing these to parents / carers.

- Where an issue relates to your child’s learning or wellbeing it needs to be directed to the class teacher in the first instance. If your enquiry is broader or you feel it has not been addressed to your satisfaction, you are then able to direct it to the appropriate Assistant Principal. If you wish to discuss a matter of a sensitive nature you may also wish to make an appointment with the Principal. Please note if you raise an issue regarding your child’s learning or wellbeing with the Assistant Principal or Principal that you have not given the teacher an opportunity to address by meeting with them, you will be directed back to them to meet.

UNINTERRUPTED MORNING SESSION - During the morning teaching session (8.55 a.m. – 11.00 a.m.) our school promotes an

uninterrupted work time for all staff. This enables a focus on core areas of teaching and learning and ensures all staff and students can complete priority activities for the day.

- During this session, teachers should not send students to other classrooms or the Office on messages (other than in the event of illness / emergency).

- Parents / carers should not interrupt class time to speak with teaching staff. Class time commences at 8.55 a.m. and during teaching hours the priority of the staff is their duty of care to their students.

- Students who arrive late to school, and after a lesson has commenced, may be asked to complete independent activities in their classroom until such time as the next lesson commences. This is particularly the case where teachers are already engaged in assisting another student or group of students with a task.

- All members of our school community are encouraged to observe the uninterrupted work time and appreciate that staff members, both teaching and non-teaching, will likely not be available for unscheduled meetings during this period.

PRIVACY LAWS

- The way information is collected, used, disclosed and secured by our school is subject to NSW legislation. This legislation limits the circumstances in which your child’s information can be disclosed to other parents. It also limits the circumstances in which you can be provided with information about action the school has taken in relation to other people’s children.

- This means, for example, you may not be provided with complete details of the action the school has taken in relation to a student who has engaged in unacceptable behaviour that has impacted on your child.
