The ongoing political controversy at the Mogalakwena Municipality has taken its toll on service delivery as a number of court in-terdicts to prevent interference in municipal matters have failed to resolve the dispute among ANC councillors.

The complete breakdown in municipal service dellivery is entering its second week now with refuse piling up on the sidewalks and streets of Mokopane. Ratepayers are say-ing they have had enough and some say they find it difficult to believe that any authority can undermine a court order.

But municipal manager (MM), William Kekana and his team say they are not giv-ing up and have again approached the high court after suspended councillor, Thlalefi An-dries Mashamaite and his fellow councillors ignored last Wednesday’s court ruling that

Services grind to a haltordered them off the premises.

On Tuesday the court ruled that Mashem-aite and his followers be removed from the council chambers and municipal building and this time added that the National Police com-missioner has to bring in the Task Force to as-sist, should the local police fail to remove the illegal ‘councillors’.

A municipal employee told Northern News that workers are not striking and are therefore not to be blamed for the lack of service deliv-ery. “Workers were instructed by the MM not to return to their work stations until further notice,” the employee said.

The Mokopane Business Chamber on Tuesday expressed its concern over the ‘filthy’ state the town is in and decided to intervene by means of a cleanup operation which was set to start on Wednesday. Businesses and households are urged to coöperate as refuse will be collected daily from 5:00 to 8:00 am and from 16:00 to 19:00 pm.

The clean-up will start in Mokopane’s CBD and will continue until the municipal workers return to work.

The cham-ber further urges all busi-nesses and households to either take their refuse to the municipal dumping site or to keep it inside their premises.

Three suspected rhino poachers were ar-rested before they were able to shoot and dehorn rhino on a farm in Marken last Sun-day afternoon.

The men: Raymond Sithole (31), Ncena Mashele (27) and Hector Maluleke (26) ap-peared in the Modimolle Magistrates’ Court on charges of the conspiracy to commit rhino poaching as well as the possession of an unlawful firearm and ammunition. They were denied bail.

The suspects were arrested after police followed up information about a possible attack on the animals on the farm. Police, members of a security company as well as the owner of the farm, conducted surveil-lance of the area for several hours and

The Lephalale Municipality has embarked on a project to formalise street trading at Albert and JL Botha Streets. The project started when a steering committee was formed in September to investigate a pos-sible action plan to eradicate crime and unlicensed trading in the area.

With the municipal bylaws as a guide-line, the LED (Local Economic Development) division set out to meet with stakeholders and role-players to find an amicable solution for business owners as well as informal trad-ers.

An audit was completed of all the hawk-ers in the vicinity which also allowed the department of home affairs to check for the necessary documentation of vendors. Those who qualified as “legal” were given an oppor-tunity to apply for a permit.

Vendors and traders were informed that all permanent structures had to be removed by Tuesday for the municipality to reha-bilitate and clean the area. Following the cleanup operation, operational space was to be allocated to all the hawkers who qualified for permits.

The condition of the permit is that no per-manent structure can be erected in the area.

Lephalale hawkers get a clean slate

A trader who was allocated a space can set up a table and gazebo-like structure which should be removed at the close of business, each day.

The by-laws also prohibits the use of

open fires, which means that food outlets should be operated from mobile kitchens. Permits have to be renewed each year allow-ing the municipality to regulate informal trad-ing in the CBD area.

“Our sewage is clean” - technical manager Martie Pretorius ([email protected])

The Mogalakwena Municipality’s techni-cal manager, David Malepa, responded to Northern News’ article of 21 November, “Sewage overflow raises concern,” where a visit to a sewage plant South-West of town and its overflow into the Nyl river was questioned.

Malepa admitted that the the current sewage dams are no longer up to stan-dard.

He said they need replacing as they are leaking. Malepa furthermore denied that raw sewage is flowing from the plant. He assured Northern News that it is treated water and added that a water sample will confirm his statement.

Malepa concluded that temporary sewage dams are in place and a long term solution is pending.

The days of catching a lift with a friend or wait-ing for a taxi are over for graduated mechanical engineering student, Daniel Molokomme who is the proud new owner of a Chevrolet Spark Campus thanks to The Fish & Chip Co.

Molokomme, a 22-year-old Mokopane resi-dent, thought nothing would come from his en-try into The Fish & Chip Co’s ‘Win a Car’ com-petition. “After buying a small fish and chips combo, I entered the competition, just to try my luck,” he says. “I would never have thought that this meal would actually end up being my ticket to mobility. It still feels like I need to be woken from a dream.”

Molokomme received the keys to his brand new Chevrolet Spark Campus at the Mokopane store where the community was present to share in his joy. “I cannot begin to express how grateful I am to The Fish & Chip Co. I have al-ways loved their food and have supported them for many years. Now, I am sure we will be life-time partners,” Molokomme said.

ADT and Vetus Schola have amalgamated their services in Lephalale.

ADT, the largest armed response compa-ny in SA and one of the largest private security companies in the world, will be taking over the Monitoring and Armed Response services of Vetus Schola in Decem-ber.

Vetus Schola Busi-ness Development exec-utive, Bylies Byleveldt, pointed out that though clients should expect a few changes during the transition - such as the company’s sign-boards, vehicles and staff uniforms chang-ing to reflect the ADT logo, their contracts and premiums would stay the same.

“We will not, as far as possible, change the staff, the conditions of your contract or your monthly premiums,” says Byleveldt. “This amalgamation only relates to our armed response business and our Strike, Guarding and K9 operations are remaining in place as before.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and to wish you

a long and rewarding road ahead as part of the ADT family,” he added.

KwaZulu-NatalAlbert Falls Dam, Pietermaritzburg.

Kontak: (031) 766 9946. [email protected]

VrystaatBloemhoek Dam, Kroonstad. Hierdie

dam voorsien Kroonstad van water. Vis spe-sies sluit in karp, geelvis, baber, en swart-baars. Kontak: Thula Game Lodge. 072 853 2313. www.thula-game-lodge.co.za

Sterkfontein Dam, Harrismith.

Kontak: Yacht Club: (028) 840 1334. Kaapse Natuurbewaring: (028) 841 4826.

MpumalangaDriekoppies Dam, Malelane. Hierdie

Daar is heelwat oornag ak-komodasie beskikbaar in Malelane.

LimpopoMokolo Dam, Lephalale.

Kontak: Fish Eagle Resort 083 276 1070.
