Mogalakwena Residents Association (MRA) chairman, Madimetja Piet Pale, was killed near his home in Mahwelereng in what many claim to be a political assassination on Saturday night.

Pale was instrumental in bringing a re-cent high court application to prevent the provincial Cooperative Government, Housing and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) MEC from placing the Mogalakwena municipality under administration. He was shot several times while driving his car less than 500m from his home.

According to a press release by the MRA, Pale left his house after receiving a phone call only minutes before the incident. He apparently tried to flee, but having suffered several gunshot wounds to his body and also his head, he seems to have lost control of his car, which overturned only 400m from where he was shot. He died on the scene.

“His death comes at the time when we are busy rooting out corruption within the Mogalakwena Municipality and we are trying to ensure that the Municipality has the ca-pacity to deliver services to the people,” the MRA said on Monday.

are being planned in the Mogalakwena mu-nicipality.

The DA claims to have a copy of a “hit list” containing Pale’s name and that of other individuals who helped him uncover corruption in the municipality. “We have submitted the list, and all other information relating to this case, to the police for further investigation,” Smalle said.

Among others, the name of Mogalakwena Councillor, Marcelle Maritz, appears on the list.

“We want Premier Mathabatha to take action and establish a task team that will probe what is going on in this municipality. We believe that there is strong evidence that this murder is politically motivated and could be followed by other murders,” Smalle con-cluded.

A delegation from the Mogalakwena municipality led by mayor William Mabuela, was said to have visited the provincial police commissioner’s office on Tuesday and also the office of the premier to implore them to view Pale’s murder in a serious light. They were asked to investigate the possibility of it being politically motivated by those parties within the municipality that stand accused of corruption and misappropriation of mu-nicipal funds.

Provincial police spokesperson, Col. Ronel Otto, on Wednesday confirmed that a special investigative unit headed by a senior provincial official is looking into the murder of Piet Pale and also the alleged hit list.

She asked that anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of Pale’s murderers should contact their nearest police station or report it anonymously to the toll-free crime number 08600 10111.

Three years for house breakingMari Elias, a Zimbabwean national was sentenced in the Lephalale regional court on Friday for house breaking with intent to steal. The crime was commit-ted in July 2011. A sentence of three years imprisonment was imposed and the suspect was declared unfit to pos-sess a firearm.

Serial rapist gets 18 yearsA 21-year-old man was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment after he was found guilty on several charges of rape and one count of house breaking in the Mahwelereng regional court last week.

Simon Buti Khoza of Tsamahansi will serve an one-year sen-tence for house breaking, 10 years for the one rape charge and 18 years for the other two charges of rape concurrently.

The court heard how he would burglarise his victims’ houses with his head covered in a balaclava and then rape the women. In one of the cases he overpowered a couple walking home at night and chased off the young man before dragging the woman into the bushes where he raped her.

The Mahwelereng police hoped that this conviction would send a clear message to criminals that rapists and men who fail to respect women will not be tolerated.

15 years for raping pregnant girlJapie Boshomane (29) from Mahwelereng was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment after he was found guilty on charges of rape and robbery in the Mahwelereng regional court last Wednesday.

Boshomane, who is well known to his victim, robbed her of cash and clothing after raping her. The court heard how he dragged the woman, who was five months pregnant, into some densely bushed area near her house where he raped her.

Upon hearing of his conviction the Mahwelereng community expressed their gratitude to the police for bringing this criminal to book.

Only 7 000 Medupi workers clocked in for work on Tuesday with some 600 leaving the premises soon after to join National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) members outside Gate 2 as part of the na-tionwide strike in the metal industry.

Numsa sector coordinator, Stephen Nhlapo, told Northern News on Tuesday that the strike will affect the Medupi project as its members in structural engineering com-panies like Murray & Roberts will partake in protest action. Construction work is expected to be brought to a halt.

The union has rejected employers’ offer of between 7 and 8 %.

Ed Jardim, group communications execu-tive for Murray & Roberts, confirmed that about 1 000 scheduled employees did not report to work on Tuesday. “We have about 900 employees on site today. All sites are peaceful at this point in time.”

Numsa, which represents close to 10 000 of Eskom’s workers, warned that it was considering risking an unprotected

NUMSA strike begins at Medupistrike. According to Section 66 of the Labour Relations Act and Essential Services Commit-tee, Eskom is classified as a provider of an essential service, meaning its workers cannot strike.

Numsa was demanding a 12% wage increase across the board, but later adjusted their demands to 10%. Eskom is offering 5.6%.

Eskom's acting HR group executive, Mon-gezi Ntsokolo, says: “The offer is informed by the challenges facing Eskom, including the need for financial sustainability and meet-ing the organisation’s mandate of ensuring a stable and reliable power supply system.”

Natasha Michael MP, DA Shadow Minis-ter of public Enterprises called on the depart-ment of public enterprises to “take all steps within the ambit of the law to prevent the pending strike at Eskom.

"We accordingly urge Public Enterprise Minister, Lynne Brown, to obtain a court in-terdict, to halt Numsa strike action at Eskom in particular.”

Members of the South African municipal workers union (Samwu) downed tools on Monday demanding a clear separation be-tween the political and administrative struc-tures within the Lephalale municipality.

According to the regional secretary of SAMWU, Patric Aphane, there is too much political interference within the structures of the Lephalale municipality. “We have ob-served that political meetings are confused with management meetings. Employees who do not support the mayor’s political views are often victimised. We are concerned that the acting municipal manager (MM), MB Makgatho, was appointed with no experience within a municipality.”

SAMWU handed a memorandum to the speaker of the municipal council, MR Boloka, demanding among other things a report on the R9,5-million that disappeared from the municipality. “We are disturbed about the negligence and disregard of the supply chain processes by the office of the mayor and we demand a report regarding the suspension of officials,” the state-ment reads.

SAMWU calls for the immedi-ate resignation of the mayor, Jack Maeko, and the acting MM. “If the mayor does not re-sign we will have to

Municipal workers down toolspush him out of office by force,” they warned.

Spokesperson for the municipality, Victor Monyepao, could not be reached for com-ment, but he issued a statement on Tuesday saying: “Early on Monday morning the strike management team met to discuss allegations that there were intimidation at the municipal workshop, which was the assembly point of the marchers. It was reported that marchers were intimidating those who were reporting for work.”

Boikarabelo mine delayed Protech Kuthele (Pty) Limited, one of the contractors at Boikarabelo mine outside Lephalale, has applied to court to terminate its business rescue proceedings and be placed in liquidation, Resource Generation (ResGen) announced.

Protech Kuthele was undertaking the earth-works for the rail link, the site infrastructure and the roads. It has removed all staff from the mine site and terminated all activities.

ResGen announced that the unforeseen de-velopment is expected to delay the completion of the project by three to six months, with first coal production now estimated for the first half of 2016.

“Based on the previous competitive tender process, ResGen does not expect any difficulty in appointing an alternative earthworks con-tractor.,” the statement added.

A man is being questioned by Lephalale police concerning a cannabis plant that was found at a church property.

The suspect initially fled the scene when he was confronted by police, but later contacted po-lice officers to say that the plant does not belong to him. Police found the plant covered with shade cloth and removed it from the premises.

The case is being investigated.

Exxaro, in partnership with the Tsebo Network (TEN) and the department of education, hosted a teacher development programme at Mabalane Seleka Technical School in Onverwacht for teachers in the Lephalale, Palala North and Palala South regions last Friday.

TEN is a national educational service provider specialising in the turn-around of underperformance at high school level and the development of specific skills pools. This is done by way of supplementary learner develop-ment programmes and teacher development programmes, with a focus on the key subjects of mathematics, physical science, accounting, english andm-mathematical literacy.

Exxaro Grootegeluk Mine manager, Mervin Govender, told teachers that Exxaro is proud to be associated with the programme and that the mining company’s future in Lephalale - the future energy hub of South Africa - relies on the education of learners in the area.

“These learners will one day be the engineers and skilled workers, work-ing for Exxaro and making sure when Medupi and Coal 3 is built that together with Exxaro coal, 32% of the South Africa’s power supply is generated. As one of the biggest employers in Lephalale we want to give back to the com-munity and education is high on our agenda,” he added.

“Ek wil jou iets wys,” sê hy.

“Ek moet hierdie goed weer polish,” sê hy.

Dis by plate maatskappye,” sê Oom Fanie.

ment-arsenaal lê by sy 5-ry duet konsertina.

Ek raak gou verveeld. As ‘n ding eentonig word verloor ek belangstelling,” gesels hy.

Een ding is verseker: Oom Fanie du Ples-sis is nié eentonig nie. Hy is ‘n hand vol - veral as dit by boeremusiek kom.

Hy speel vir my die Vier Transvalers.

Winter is a notoriously difficult time to fish for bass. The water is cold, in most cases very clear, and bass are sus-pended most of the time. The following are classic winter bass hotspots:

ROCKY BLUFFS – Rocky bluffs are always good areas to

fish for winter bass. Concentrate on the beginning and the end of the bluff, look for areas with a change in composition along the bluff such as rockslides, short bluffs within bays, and areas where the channel swings into and away from the bluff wall.Pay attention to your electronics. Some bluffs may be as deep as 100-foot, but fish may only be suspended at 20-foot. Concentrate your fishing efforts at or slightly above the depth where fish are suspended.

45-DEGREE ROCKY BANKS - Riprap, chunk rock, or gravel banks which slope into deep water will hold bass in the winter. Do not waste time fishing the entire length of the bank. Look for changes along the structure and transi-tion areas. (as above). Most 45-degree banks drop down into deeper water in a series of ledges. Fish the ledges. Chances are, when you catch your first bass the rest will all be relating to the same depth zone.

OFFSHORE HUMPS – During the winter bass will relate to the sides of humps that drop off into the deepest water.

INFLOWING WATER – Sometimes water flowing into a reservoir can be warmer than the overall temperature of the body of water, especially if that water is off colour. Bait may be more active where the water is warmer, resulting in ac-tive bass.

Eight places to search for bass in the winterTRANSITION AREAS – A transition is where one type of

structural element changes to another e.g. a change in bot-tom composition, size or type of material. When you encoun-ter a transition; slow down and fish the area thoroughly.

DEEP POINTS – As with the sides of humps; points with sides that drop down swiftly into deeper water are much more productive during the winter than long sloping points that run a long way into the water. Bass do not always sit at the tip of the point.

They are more likely to relate to the drop-off along the sides of the point. Concentrate your efforts on the steepest sides of the point.

DEPTH CONTOURS – Most of the time bass will relate to the same depth zone along a drop-off. Pay attention to the details of each catch! If you can determine the depth zone where bass are holding you will catch fish.

If you miss it, even by a foot or two, you will catch noth-ing. In winter I start fishing in the 20-foot range and move deeper or shallower until I have figured out the most produc-tive depth. Keep your eye on the depthfinder and concentrate your efforts along that contour line.

DEPRESSIONS – Baitfish tend to congregate in deeper ‘holes’ during the winter.

Depressions are often found as you work your way up a creek channel towards the back of bays. If you can find a ball of baitfish concentrated in a hollow during the winter, chances are you will find feeding bass too.

Present a lure vertically through and around the school of baitfish to pick up any bass feeding in the area.
