Analysis of magazine front coversCover 1.NME Sept 2009

Dizzee Rascal Edition

Rule of thirds/left thirds

The rule states that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections

The Masthead

The masthead is bold and in capital letters this clearly stand s out at the top of the page in the left hand corner and is a dramatic font style as it has the normal writing then it has an outline/border this makes the masthead look more dramatic.

Background

The background is of Dizzie crouching on a black and white floor in front of a graphiti covered wall. Being Dizzee is a rapper it connotes his youth and modern approach to music and life, the graphitti makes it seem as if he doesn’t mind breaking the rules and standing out from the crowd.

Use of a flasher (offering something extra to T.A)

Gives the reader a peek into what is going to be in the article and also if people are walking past the magazine in a shop and they see that they are going to wonder what it entails and buy the magazine to read more.

FRONT COVER ANALYSIS

The Header

Due to it saying ’16 page..’ you automatically think you are getting more for your money. This makes the magazine more attractive.

The sell line/cover lines

There are not many sell lines as Dizzie Rascal dominates the frame. Due to there not being many sell lines we assume that the magazine sells itself and doesn’t need many sell lines for people to buy it.

The Main Image

This image shows Dizzie Rascal taking up the majority of the page because he is the main feature of this issue of NME. He looks really happy in this image and is crouching down looking straight at the audience.

The Main Cover Line

“I’m spreading joy around the world, man!” This makes Dizzie out to be a happy and bubbly person this harmonizes with the main images. ‘Dizzie Rascal’ Is written in big block capitals this emphasises that he is the main feature of the magazine and attracts more people that like him.

Barcode-date/issue/price

The barcode, price and issue number is very important in order to sell the magazine.

The Footer

…Lists bands all of the same genre rhat fit in with the style of the magazine showing the audience what is included.

TARGET AUDIENCE OF THIS MAGAZINE

METHODS USED TO ATTRACT THIS TARGET AUDIENCE ARE:

Uses a male on the front cover that most men could relate too as he is made out to be a normal ‘lad’ with the graphiti behind him which suggests that he has worked his way up from being normal to a celebrity (which is suggested by the gold chain around his neck).

Also Dizzie is also a male around the age of 25 which is the same age and gender as the main audience that read NME.
