DEIMOS 2008 RecapDEIMOS 2008 Recap

Motor control software modified to deal with longstanding grating clamp-up problem Modified clamp-up sequence on slider 4 Faults are much reduced but not eliminated

Released real-time data reduction tool QuickSlit; “mini version” of DEIMOS pipeline

Developed script for “slit-scanning” mode in RA

Commissioned MAGIQ software on DEIMOS Implemented guider flexure correction in MAGIQ

Page 19: NIRSPEC Jim Lyke. 2 NIRSPEC Since last year: NIRSPEC web pages updated & released MAGIQ IQM “on-demand” mode in testing Noise investigation (no

19

DEIMOS Current StatusDEIMOS Current Status

DEIMOS continues to perform well overall with no major problems

Concerns: Recent clamp-up problem on grating slider 3 traced to bad air cylinder on 2 clamps; repaired

Slitmask system continues to generate metal “dust” in focal plane requiring regular cleanup; no easy fix

Low-level bias variations and occasional “dropouts” on CCD mosaic; impact low

Grating tilt stages show occasional unrepeatability; possible mechanical problem with encoder mount

Page 20: NIRSPEC Jim Lyke. 2 NIRSPEC Since last year: NIRSPEC web pages updated & released MAGIQ IQM “on-demand” mode in testing Noise investigation (no

DEIMOS Future Priorities

Upgrade instrument control host New hardware Rebuild software for greater maintainability

Replace rotator control host Concern about obsolescence of Linux box

Monitor CCD bias problem Not a significant source of time loss Surgery on DEIMOS CCD electronics is risky

Investigate grating tilt positioning errors Problem is minor and intermittent Will perform close inspection of encoders

Revamp DEIMOS web pages Next following NIRSPEC web redocumentation
