Why do Neighborhood Hangouts?Jesus was approached by an expert in the law and was asked this question, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” He answered with two simple commands. Jesus told us, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your Heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind;’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’”

Who is our neighbor? When Jesus tells us to love our neighbors we often think about being a good samaritan from Luke 10. Jesus was talking about our metaphorical neighbor and those who are in need, but Jesus was talking about our actual neighbors as well.

What does it mean to love your neighbor? The word tells us God is love. It tells us from faith, hope, and love; the greatest of these being love. Love is something that theologians define, poets write about, and singers sing about. Ultimately, love is intentionally and emotionally caring for your neighbor, and it begins with knowing their names. It is knowing where they work, knowing their children’s names, and being there through their struggles and showing them how Jesus loves us.

What is a Neighborhood Hangout?A Neighborhood Hangout is an opportunity to build relationships with your neighbors by hosting them in your neighborhood or in your home so that they would hear the gospel. A Neighborhood Hangout is an opportunity to love your neighbors and cultivate genuine gospel relationships. They are designed with this purpose in mind, to be the church. Pastor Robby said,

“We want to BE the church in our neighborhoods and in our communities.”

The prayer is to have “Neighborhood Hangouts” AND Life Groups in every neighborhood where a Long Hollow member lives so that every person in Sumner County would hear the gospel and enter the Discipleship Pathway.

Step 1: Registering your Neighborhood HangoutPick a date and begin designing your Neighborhood Hangout by registering at longhollow.com/hangouts

o Your Neighborhood Hangout will connect you with other Long Hollow Families and neighbors in your community, and the hope is there will be other families that you will be able to work with to plan and organize your Neighborhood Hangout.

o The missions team will assist you in getting your Neighborhood Hangout started.

Step 2: Designing your Neighborhood HangoutWhat kind of Neighborhood Hangout would be best in your neighborhood?Grill out, Movie night, Game night, Sporting event (NFL, NBA), Holiday themed, etc.

How big is it going to be? o Our goal is to be relational with our neighbors, so keep your

Neighborhood Hangout small enough to achieve that goal.

o It is best to use natural boundaries when inviting people to your Neighborhood Hangout (i.e. end of the block) if you do this, you need to invite everyone from that area.

o It is easy to grow, but it’s hard to shrink.

Page 6: NHangoutseighborhood...o Your Neighborhood Hangout will connect you with other Long Hollow Families and neighbors in your community, and the hope is there will be other families that

Location o Inside your house, front yard or backyard, *HOA building, *cul-de-sac

* If you’re going to use other resources, check if you need to make reservations or get permits.

What resources will you need? o Food plan, games for kids (multiple), activities for adults, tables and

chairs, name-tags, garbage cans, etc.

If there are other LH families, share the load. The missions team has resources that are available; email the missions team at missions@longhollow com to find out what we have!

o Invite them personally with invitation cards.

We have a PDF version if you need that resource and we have included a hard copy of the invite cards.

before you remember it.

Have intentional conversations o Ask them about their families, hobbies, and career

Start a gospel conversation o Share the Gospel > Invite them to Know God > Invite them to Find

Community

Step 5: Invest in Your NeighborsFollow up with your neighbors the week after your Neighborhood Hangout and continue a genuine gospel relationship with them.

o See how they liked the hangout, invite them to your next one, set some gospel appointments with them, invite them into the Discipleship Pathway

o Follow up and report your Neighborhood Hangout at: longhollow.com/missions

o Plan for the next Neighborhood Hangout in your neighborhood to continue those relationships!
