DYING TO SAVE MONEY?Many people fail to sweep their chimney or serviceappliances at regular intervals, either due to thefact that they are unaware of the maintenancerequirements, the potential consequences, or forfinancial reasons. The use of an unregistered chimney sweep canbe dangerous; it is only through established tradeorganisations such as the Guild of Master ChimneySweeps that a customer can have confidence thatthe job they are paying for is done correctly, andthat safety checks will have been made. Uponcompletion, a registered chimney sweep will issuean approved certificate.

CHIMNEY FIRESUK fire statistics indicate that there are over31,000 domestic chimney fires a year. These arelargely due to infrequent sweeping which resultsin a build-up of flammable tar within the applianceor flue. Insurance companies may refuse claimsdue to chimney fires unless the chimney has beenswept by a registered chimney sweep where acertificate has been issued.

On 20th October, 1871, the NottinghamGuardian announced the death of MrIchabod C. Wright at the home of hisson in Sussex. Ichabod was born at thefamily home, Mapperley Hall, on the 11thApril 1795 the eldest of 13 children. Hisgrandfather, also called Ichabod, camefrom Suffolk and started a business inNottingham as an iron monger but soonmoved into banking, creating a family-runbank on Long Row, Nottingham in 1761.

Ichabod Charles was educated at Eton andChrist Church College, Oxford graduatingwith a BA in 1817 and an MA in 1820then continuing as a Fellow at the collegeuntil 1825. On leaving the college, in thesame year, he became joint manager ofthe family bank. He married Theodosia, daughter of Lord Chief Justice Denman,on the 21st December 1825.

Wright devoted most of his early businesslife to the bank and made a study of thetheory of banking, writing several books onthe subject.

His interest in Italian literature during the1830’s produced a translation of DivinaCommedia by Dante, popularising thisauthors work. It was issued in three partsdedicated to Lord Brougham, ArchbishopHowley and Lord Denman, all Dante

admirers. The three books were publishedtogether in 1845.

In 1859 Wright published an English blankverse edition of The Iliad of Homer. As wellas these scholarly works, he publishedThoughts on the Currency in 1841, TheEvils of Currency in 1847 and a studyon Sir Robert Peel’s Bank Charter Act of1844. Wright also wrote and published avolume of poems.

These books are still available to buy fromAmazon today!

The Wright’s were great supporters of thechurch and were involved in many localactivities. He was a director of the MidlandCounties Railway in which he took greatinterest. In 1839 hewrote a 12 page bookletto the railway companies about Sundaytravelling on the trains. As Sunday was theonly day off for most people at that time, great crowds arrived at the stations to betransported to Nottingham and other townsmaking it necessary to add extra trainsto deal with the traffic. Wright objectedto this, arguing that Sunday should be aday of rest and he was prepared to acceptfinancial loss and unpopularity rather than“violate the precept of the observance ofthe lords day”

Wright was interested in the educationof the poor and gave land at the junctionof Hucknall Road for the building of theNational School.

While at his sons home of Heathfield Hallin Burwash, he died suddenly, on the14th October, 1871, aged 76. He wasbought home to Nottingham and buried inCarrington Churchyard. As a memorial, anumber of his poems were published afterhis death in 1873.

After his death, Wright’s wife Theodosiathrew herself into her work for thechurch and died, after some 20 years ofwidowhood, in May 1895.

Decking can really add another dimension to a garden. A few years ago we replaced our tired and depressing mixed level concrete patio with a lovely new deck. It was hard work but well worth it. Having it all on one level makes the garden seem so much bigger.

After a couple of harsh winters it now looks very dirty and scruffy and is in desperate need of some TLC. This is a good time of year to get on top of this job - so that it looks gorgeous for all those hot summer days and bbq parties (fingers crossed!)

One of the key things to bear in mind before you start is to check for a few days of dry weather. You need this to enable the products to dry properly.

There are three main steps to deck maintenance; cleaning, restoring and protecting.

Cleaning - There are loads of cleaning preparations specifically designed for decking. We use Swarfega Decking Cleaner, £9.98 for 5ltrs from B & Q. Most garden centres and DIY stores sell a good selection of branded and own label products.

First you need to get the deck clear of debris. We brush and then hoover the deck to get all the old leaves and dirt off. Then you can apply the cleaner following the manufacturers instructions.

Restoring and Protecting - Once the decking is clean and dry we use Ronseal Decking Oil in Clear, £39.98 for 5 ltrs from B & Q. Decking oil is a special treatment/preserver that penetrates the timber so as well as looking good it also protects the wood from the elements.

We apply the oil using a large paint brush - which takes a while - after leaving to dry you need to apply a second coat. A 5ltr

can covers 50 sq mtres of decking with two coats.

So there you go - with a couple of days graft, the decking will look like new and you can sit back and enjoy a cold beer and admire your hard work.

Now would also be a good time to tart up any tired looking garden furniture. Luckily our small table and chairs are metal and glass so require little more than a good scrub with some soapy water.

Elsewhere in the garden - the runner beans are coming along nicely on the window sill and my mum has kindly donated various other vegetable seeds which will be going into the garden over the next couple of months.

I received a lovely email from a reader recently. Gaynor runs a stall on Sherwood market called Sherwood Specialilty Herbs and Edible Plants. The market is held on the first Saturday of the month through til August from 10am til 2pm. Gaynor will be selling different plants every month. I can’t wait to get along and stock up.

If you are thinking of having decking and can’t face the thought of doing it yourself there are a number of businesses listed in the magazine who would be delighted to come and quote you. Many of these businesses will also restore old decking for you.

Penny’sBoutiquePenny

Ladies, welcome to Penny’s Boutique....First of all let me introduce myself. Myname is Penny and I am very excitedto have been asked by the team at NGMagazines to write a regular fashion page.I have been buying, selling and dressingladies in Fashion for quite a while now andI LOVE IT!

I had the great pleasure of being theFashionAdvisoratJohnLewis,Nottinghamand last October opened my own shop-Boutique 11 on Plains Road in Mapperley, selling “real clothes for real ladies”.

I not only want to talk about the comingseason’s colours, styles and prints butalso about how to put that fashion togetherto suit YOUR particular age, shape anduniqueness.

First of all, I’d like all you ladies out thereto start truly believing that age and sizeare really nothing but numbers. It’s notthe clothes that you wear but how youwear them and that’s all down to carefullypicking things from current trends that suityour individual shape.

Believe me ...every single one of us ladieshas something about our bodies which wehate and complain about. The thing weneed to do is enhance our favourite bitsand disguise our bad bits!

So here goes................This coming summer it’s allabout colour....lots and lotsof colour, from acid greensand pinks to soft blues andyellows.

Bright, bright colouredjeans and skinny trousersare everywhere andwhen teamed with alovely simple white topor blouse, can really suiteveryone. The trick is to

get the right shape and length of the top towear with them. Team that with a fabulousbrightly coloured loafer and you are goodto go.

Dresses are also very, verypopular this summer. Lovelyfeminine “Julia Roberts”style dresses. Just pick thecorrect shape and length foryour own body shape. Againin all sorts of pretty coloursand patterns from tiny littledaisy prints to huge boldasymmetrical designs.

I love this very feminine look, especially its versatility. It can be made tolook a little funky with leggings and a flatballerina pump or any height wedge. It canbe dressed up to be sophisticated with asimple patent court shoe..... Voila a dressthat can take you absolutely anywhere.

All I ask ladies is please don’t dismiss anyfashion look until you have experimenteda little. I have lost count of the numberof times I’ve suggested ladies try onsomething a little different from what theywould normally choose. To their surprisethey’ve absolutely loved it and say “I feellike a new woman in this” or “I would havenever thought I could wear this and I loveit”

Just remember, enjoyyourselves, try to makebuying yourself a new outfitfun and if I can help in anyway you know where tofind me.

Until next time....HappyShopping

Notts Guided WalksAre Back Again!!

The Notts Guided Walks Partnership ispleased to announce that sufficient fundingthis year has enabled the publication of their2012 Guided Walks booklet and web-sitewww.nottsguidedwalks.co.uk. Thanks toour volunteer leaders and groups, this is thelargest compilation of walks the Partnershiphas produced so far.

Copies of the 52-page free booklet willbe available at libraries, country parks, information and leisure centres containing129 guided walks in Nottinghamshire rightthrough to the end of the year. Most ofthe walks are free and led by experiencedwalkers from the Ramblers and other localwalking or wild-life groups. The web-site willbe on-line by the middle of April.

A new feature this year is a “WalkingFestival” for the week Sunday 3rd to 10thJune. During this week, 17 walks havebeen specially planned to encourage evenmore individuals and families to take to thecountryside during possibly the best monthof the year. The Festival will be supported byRadio Nottingham - indeed, one of the walkswill be led by John Holmes. Another will beled by Paddy Tipping, ex-MP and Notts AreaRamblers’ President. It’s your chance toenjoy some healthy activity at little cost - andmake new friends too. Six of these walks canbe reached by public transport.

For those not yet ready for several miles ofeffort, there are many pages of Health Walksincluded in both booklet and web-site, led byexperienced leaders who are trained for thejob. If you’re trying to regain fitness after aperiod of illness, have a look at what’s thereto help you in your area. It may introduce youto a new group of friends. Happy walking!

Welcome to the latest edition of the Carlton Forum Swimming Club page.

2012 Notts County Age Group and Relays Championships:February/March: Focus was on the County Championships where the best of Notts were together for an intensive few weeks of competition. This year the older children competed back in December but arrived for the Relays day. This left the 14/U boys and 13/U girls to fight it out for the individual honours.

9yr age group: In the girls section Charlotte Render qualified for her events very late but smashed all PB’s and achieved an excellent 10th place overall. Sprint twins Ella and Jessie Green performed well in some of the 50m events. Asher Huffen, Jak Winfield and Thomas Crawford competed in the boys section with Asher excelling in 2nd place overall following a series of big swims especially in the 200m events. Jak had a little bad luck but gained a very creditable 11th place, and Thomas, who made a last minute decision to enter achieved PBs in his 3 events.

10yr age group: In what is probably the toughest group (60 swimmers!) Nadia Bouchlaghem, Hannah Gayne and Abbie Quarton were very competitive gaining 16th, 17th and 21st place respectively. Luke Mitchell has showed fantastic progress since his debut last year and stormed to 2nd place in the boys section with very strong swims in the 200m backstroke and 200m Individual Medley where he achieved Midland Regional Qualifying Times.

11yr age group: Meghan Henshaw and Megan Booth competed in the girls section and both achieved big PBs with Meghan gaining 23rd overall in another very strong group. In the boys section Ben Flanagan achieved a hat-trick of top-10 placings with 7th overall and Marcel Green continued to place well, as he has done every year, with 20th this time.

12yr age group: Will Gayne once again hit top spot becoming 12yr Champion. It was certainly no easy thing and went down to the last event following some extreme pressure from another top Nova swimmer and sprint specialist. Will’s distance work kept him in the picture and some late big sprint PBs did the job. Incredibly, this is the 4th year in a row that Will has been champion. Josh Mitchell has also showed excellent progress and made his Counties debut.

14 yr age group: Another debutant this year was Nathan Sutton who came from nowhere to qualify for 2 events. This followed his recent promotion to our main squad.

Committees Corner and SquadNews:

Congratulations to CharlotteRender and Asher Huffen whohave been selected to swim onthe Nova Development Squad. This is a great achievementbased on their recent CountyChamps placings. It is a message we have todeliver rather more often thanwe would like, but we willcontinue to make it clear solong as it remains an issue.

We’re talking home and vehicle security, and it has been somethingof an issue in Mapperley recently.

Unfortunately, too many of us are making it easy for opportunistthieves to sneak in through unlocked doors and windows and tosteal our prized possessions.

I know many people will read this and think it does not apply tothem. We all like to think we take good care of the things wehave bought with our hard-earned money. It so easy, however, inthe course of our busy lives, to overlook some rudimentary stepswhich can protect those items.

Please remember to lock doors and windows at night, and whenyou leave the house. You should also keep doors locked andwindows secure even if you are in the house during the day.

If you can afford it, a burglar alarm is always a good investment, asare timer switches for lights and lamps.

This message is not intended to scare anyone. Crime is yet againreducing. In fact, there have been 6,000 fewer victims of crimeacross Nottinghamshire over the past 12 months than there wereduring the previous year. We can all help to drive that numberdown still further by eliminating the opportunities that burglars arelooking to exploit.

When it comes to our cars, too many of us are content to leaveitems on the seats. Sat-navs are almost seen as integral to thevehicle, rather than easily detachable optional extras.

Remove any items of value from a car, and that includes itemsyou might think would not interest anyone. Even clothing andsmall change can be enough to entice the most prolific thief. Andremember to lock the car. We still come across incidents of theftfrom cars which were not locked by their owners. The cost ofnot taking these simple precautions is not just in the loss of anitem, but in the time and expense of replacing that item, makinginsurance claims and then having topay out higher premiums. For comprehensive crime preventionadvice, please visit theNottinghamshirePolice website www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and go to theCrimeReductionsection.

As technologyimproves and itbecomes easier toaccess the internet, many people arechanging the waythey access legalservices, takingadvantage ofreduced costs andthe element ofconvenience.

In line with this, Rothera Dowson haslaunched their online divorce and dissolutionservice which can be accessed through thefirm’s website at www.rotheradowson.co.uk.The service supports those applying for adivorce or dissolution of a civil partnership,by assisting with the application to the courtand completion of the court documentation.

Clients can choose the amount they wishto spend and the level of support they wishto receive. This can range from simplycompleting the forms themselves online anddealing with the Court directly, to instructingus to deal with the completion of the forms

and the submission of the necessarydocumentation to the Court at each stage.

The service may not be appropriate forall people; for example if arrangementsfor children are not agreed or the formerpartner is not likely to cooperate. In thosecircumstances it may still be possible to dealwith the matters online or in the traditionalway but additional work may be required.Additionally, where appropriate, advicecan be obtained concerning financial andchildren matters.

As Legal Aid will be withdrawn from themajority of family cases from April 2013, thisdivorce and dissolution service will allowthose who may not be eligible for Legal Aidfrom that date, to obtain access to justice ata reasonable price and in a straightforwardand convenient way.

Should you require any further advice orinformation about the service, please do nothesitate to contact Mr Paul Cobb, head ofthe family law team at Rothera Dowson, on0115 9165200 or [email protected].

Many regular walkers over the formerGedling Colliery site will have noticed somemajor changes in its appearance recently.During the middle week of March, the lasttrack remnants of the old Derby FriargateLine between Netherfield and the collierywere spectacularly ripped up by a team fromQTS Rail.

Cut first into 20 ft lengths by oxy-acetylenetorches, the single track that has lainundisturbed since the line was built in 1878was pulled piece-meal out of the ground by apowerful JCB with a panel grab, then piled onto a rail-based loading shovel. Each load was

then taken to the colliery end of the line andstacked for delivery as valuable scrap metaland timber.

Luckily Brian Cluff of the Notts FootpathsPreservation Society was on hand to recordthe whole process from the track-side. Youcan see a short video of this on Youtube athttp://youtu.be/Uo3klaM_Aog under ‘Traveland Events’ titled ‘Gedling Rail TrackRemoval’. It is featured in the DVD he hasjust made about the colliery site, its tunnel, the extensive wild-life on the ground andin the air, Alkane’s innovative methane gasconversion project and what’s happeningto the Council’s development plan for theCountry Park.

Those many readers of NG3 who joinedBrian and the Notts Footpaths last Octoberfor an informative walk through the site maylike to contact him for a copy of the DVD thatalso includes the walk. He can be reached on(0115) 9205110 or by e-mail [email protected]
