Department News On Stage This week, the Theatre and Dance Department kicks off the 2014-2015 season with Seamus Heaney's THE BURIAL AT THEBES , the thesis project of MFA Director Sarah Wansley. Heaney wrote this adaptation of Sophocles' ANTIGONE in 2004 in response to a post- 9/11 surge in rhetoric surrounding the "security of the state" in the US and UK. Indeed, some of Creon's speeches in this text are directly lifted from the words of former President George W. Bush. In UCSD's production, Wansley has taken these thematic resonances one step further, re-imaging Creon as a contemporary Head of State, struggling to pull his country together in the wake of a domestic terror attack.
