On Stage This week the Theatre andDance Department kicks off the2014-2015 season with SeamusHeaneysTHE BURIAL AT THEBES thethesis project of MFA DirectorSarah Wansley Heaney wrotethis adaptation ofSophocles ANTIGONEin 2004 in response to a post-911 surge in rhetoricsurrounding the security of thestate in the US and UK Indeedsome of Creons speeches in thistext are directly lifted from thewords of former PresidentGeorge W Bush In UCSDsproduction Wansley has takenthese thematic resonances onestep further re-imaging Creonas a contemporary Head ofState struggling to pull hiscountry together in the wake ofa domestic terror attack

This quarter MFA actor NJameh Camara will be workshoppinga solo performance MARGUERITE TO MAYA ANGELOU AMOMENT IN PROSE is a play set in a 1957 jazz club about ayoung Maya Angelou who is on the road to becoming a singerWith her first record out what should be a celebratory momentin her life turns into a moment of crisis as she questions herselfand recollects her past
Written and performed by second year actor NJameh Camarathe piece will be directed by third year Michael Moran andstage managed by third year Rachael Albert The productionalso features scenic design by alum Natalie Khuen (MFA 14)costume design by third year Janet ONeill lighting design bysecond year Anthony Jannuzzi and sound design by secondyear Andrew Vargas The show also features fourth yearundergrad Francisco Arcila on guitar and Andrew Vargas onthe djembe with Josie Santiago an actress and dancer from theBay Area dancing in the piece
The piece was first developed as part of the 2014 UbuntuTheater Projects Breaking Chains festival The UCSDworkshop performance is scheduled for Sunday Dec 14th at2pm in the Arthur Wagner Theater Poster design by MFAdesigner Danae McQueen

New Transportation Website Launched
Over the next few years a series of regional transportationprojects will occur at and around UC San Diego transforminghow students faculty staff patients and visitors will accesscampus The projects will accomplish everything from bringingthe trolley into the heart of campus to constructing a newtransit center and expanding the Genesee Avenue Bridge andInterstate 5 interchange In an effort to keep the campus community up-to-date on theseprojects and the related impacts an On The Go website hasbeen launched The site offers important details on eachtransportation project and will be regularly updated with helpfulinformation and resources These projects are going to change how we get to from andaround UC San Diego said Gary C Matthews Vice Chancellorfor Resource Management and Planning Construction will besignificant in some cases but were making every effort tominimize the impact to our community
