Parent/ Student/ Teacher Interviews The Parent/Student/Teacher interviews are being held this Monday and Tuesday for senior students and Wednes-day for junior students. Your participation sends an important message to your children that you value their educa-tion and care about their progress. If you are unable to attend this term and would like to discuss your child’s pro-gress at school, please contact the College to arrange a mutually suitable time to meet with the teachers.

Normal Service is Restored At long last I am extremely happy to announce the maintenance work on the school assembly hall and canteen is complete! The canteen is now operating from the newly refurbished canteen area in the assembly hall. Many thanks to Par-ents Club President Kate McKenzie for the many hours she donated in sorting through and organising the crockery, cut-lery and other catering equipment. Also thanks to the canteen volunteers for their patience and flexibility in providing canteen lunches for the students and staff in the multipurpose room.

Our Fete is Sealed! Just a reminder that our annual school fete is on this Friday the 24th of March from 4.00pm to 7.00pm. The Parents Club are doing a terrific job in organising the event and involving as many community groups as they can. This is our major fundraiser for the year so please do your bit to ensure it is an enjoyable and successful event.

2016 Annual Report to the School Community School Council will present the 2016 Annual Report to the School Community at 7.30pm on Wednesday the 14th of June. The Annual Report is prepared to inform parents and the wider school community of the school’s successes, activities and achievements throughout the year. Please contact the College for a copy of our 2016 Annual Report, view it on the Skoolbag app or you are welcome to attend the presentation evening in June.

Wednesday VET programs from Mr Robinson

As the VET (Vocational Education & training) Co-ordinator it is always pleasing to hear how well our students are

going at their VET studies. Last Wednesday I visited a few of the students at Plumbing (Thomas Ismay),

Electrotechnology (Jamieson Huff & Cody Tumeth), Hospitality (Lauren McDonald) and Building & Construction

(Maddi Martion) Some photos are included of the students in the newsletter. Unfortunatley Maddi was on a lunch

break so I was unable to get a photo of her.

The reports from all of the RTO’s (registered training organisation) which included Skillinvest, Horsham College &

Federation University is that out students are putting in a great effort, are polite and courteous and prepared to

learn. (I would expect nothing less)

Thomas was busy digging and learning how to shore up plumbing trenches, Lauren had just finished cooking a

chicken meal complete with a caeser salad. Maddi was working on OH&S modules in the building industry and

Jamieson and Cody were learning how to not electrocute themselves and wiring up power plugs.

It was great to see students enjoying their studies relating to other students and learning in an adult environment.

VET course are expensive for the school to run and seeing the commitment from the students was very pleasing to

note.

Over the next few weeks I will get out to see the other students at Longernong College and I know that Josh

McDonald, Jeremy James, Jaydn Kruger and Jack Lowe are busy working not just at their VET providers but also on

work placement every second week.

Thanks to the Hindmarsh Shire, Graincorp, Schillings, Dan Gebert and M & L Robinson for providing practical

“hands on” opportunities for the students,

VET is not an easy option as there are lots of work modules to complete and practical tasks to undertake. However,

it provides students with a real taste of work and the opportunity to try out trades before committing to an

Apprenticeship.

Just a side note– Lauren McDonald is featured on the cover of the workplace document which is sent statewide.

It shows her in full chefs uniform preparing food (photo was taken last year) and is now widely distributed.

Well done Lauren!

Sailing School Report

Day 1 After leaving school at nine a.m. the day was spent driving to Geelong, with the inevitable stop at McDonalds for a snack. We spent the week at the Barwon river Holiday Park, which has a pool and a jumping pillow. We had barbeque for tea. Day 2 by Joad On the second day we headed down to the sailing school and spent the morning learning about the parts of sailing boats and how to use them. In the afternoon we took the boats out and sailed around a course using tack and jibe turns. When we got back from sailing it was the boy’s turn to cook tea. We cooked pasta. I had an excellent day. Day 3 by Murphy and Bailey Today we had a high wind warning so we had to go in these bigger boats called dolphins. We were split into two groups. One group sailed to another dock, while the other group walked. Once we finished sailing we did a bit of shopping and saw a Geelong football player. Later that night we went out for tea. Day 3 by Maddi S and Macy On Wednesday there was a strong wind warning. We took the bigger boats called the `dolphin.’ They are a lot heavier than the `envies’ ( the smaller boats) and are less likely to tip. After sailing we headed to Westfield for some shop-ping. Whilst there we ate some fro-yo and saw a famous footballer Joel Selwood, signing up for Foxtel in the middle of the shopping centre. We approached him, hoping for a photo or autograph, but were aggressively turned away by his GF telling us he was `busy.’ After hiding from the GF in a nearby store and regaining our confidence and pride, we snuck some photos and slipped out of the shopping centre to have dinner at the Wharf Shed. Day 4 by Alannah and Kirsten On Thursday we had our final day of sailing. We were joined by another school, although we didn’t see much of them. We used the smaller boats and rigged them. There was also a group of three that went on the dolphin. Despite the two days of practice some boats had some issues including one whose boat filled with water and had to avoid a capsize. Dinner was prepared by the girl’s dorm and they made a stir fry. We finished the night with a movie `Legally Blonde,’ which was enjoyed by all. Day 5 By Aidan and Ian Today was the day that we headed back home, so we had to pack up all our bags and load them in the bus for the long five hour journey back to Rainbow. We headed off at about a quarter to nine, about an hour down the road we stopped to get some lunch, stretch our legs and go to the toilet. We were all trying to entertain ourselves on the bus, playing games or listening to music, just trying to be doing something we get home. When we got home we were all relieved that we were home and we thanked Mr Smith and Chelsea very much for taking us on this trip. It was an amazing experience.

Students of the week in the Junior school are Giaan, Caleb, Will, Addi & Lucy
