Children and school youth in townships are reading and writing in preparation for the annual Fair at Wits University in September. This month we Launch YOUTH RISING in JAZZ, to appreciate JAZZ and provide a platform for young artists. Registration is Open for organisations and individuals to EXHIBIT and HOST events at the Fair! You can HOST an Event on the Fair’s theme or a topic of your choice, in any art form, as long as it is linked to ‘the word’. Applications on website. Deadline for Applications to EXHIBIT & HOST events: 4 July 2016 The Fair is FREE for the public, an festival for civil society organisations and people of all ages and social backgrounds, to exercise your voice, your solidarity and debate ideas. This year the theme, YOUTH RISING aims to mobilise all youth - in schools, tertiary institutions, working and unemployed – to read the word and the world. Related to this theme is the #Feesmustfall movement and the 40th anniversary of Soweto Youth Uprising. You are welcome to HOST an event in any of the Programmes below: Schools Programme a Children’s Programme, Two day skills Workshops a Literary programme a Film Festival and Theatre and Live Jazz. YOUTH RISING IN JAZZThe JBF’s Youth Rising in Jazz is a monthly forum to develop an appreciation of jazz, especially among youth. This is forum is a partnership between the JBF and the South African Jazz Appreciators Association (SAJAA). The partnership will mobilise young people from Literature to Jazz, to know their history, the influences on artistsin South Africa, the region and internationally. This is an opportunity to see young artists perform their work and enable intergenerational performances, debate and appreciation to ‘pass on the baton’. This is part of the JBF encourages the appreciation of all art forms ‘to read the word and the world’. Youth Rising in Jazz will hold seven (7) monthly forums and include live band performances and discussions led by local artists, SAJAA members, academics and the public.

Join SAJAAThe SAJAA was formed in 2013 aims to grow jazz through forming local groups in townships, to listen to music and enjoy live band performance. The SAJAA works from club to national levels in 9 provinces. For more information contact Boyce Tagane on 084 2166025 or Email: [email protected]
