JBF on Thursday & FridayThe JBF kicked off to a great start on Thursday and Friday with a number of activities: the JBF Schools Programme, the Screening of the Film Action Kommandant by Nadine Cloete on Thursday evening, Sewing Wonderbags Project with the Children’s Resource Centre from Cape Town and the Writing Workshop with the Society for Chidren’s Book Writers and Illustrators, run by British author, Alan Durant.Successful Schools Programme The Fair kicked off to a great start on Thursday and Friday with the successful Schools Programme. More than 600 school youth participated over the two days from more than 30 schools. The JBF works with schools, teachers and book clubs throughout the year. The school programme was intense, starting with participation in a choice of fifteen (15) workshops on photography, writing stories, poetry and music. Then students discussed with the authors whose books they had read – Zakes Mda, Ronnie Govender, James Matthews, Keorapetse Kgositsile and Mohale Mashigo, the Guest of the Fair. This was followed by an interesting discussion hosted by Mashigo on the Meaning of Soweto before watching the lively play, the Orphans of Qumbu with JBF inner city youth. The play is accompanied by music performed by the Moses Taiwa Molelekwa Band.

Don’t miss Action KommandantThe joint film JBF-Wits SRC screening of Action Kommandant (director, Nadine Cloete) about the killing of MK fighter, Ashley Kriel, was very well attended and well received on Thursday, 1st Sept. Together with the book launch, Wankie 67 by Nicky van Driel, the discussion was interesting and moving. Leon Scott, a fellow MK fighter in the same cell as Ashley Kriel, who is also featured in the documentary was visibly moved. He expressed his gratitude to Cloete for the engaging and consultative approach in the making of the film. However, Scott noted that for many people in South Africa, including Bonteheuwel where he and Kriel were both born, nothing has changed and many people still go to bed hungry. Action Kommandant will be screened again on Saturday and Sunday at 2.00pm.
