The Board of Directors of the Akron Section and I welcome you to our 2016-2017 professional activities. First, let me thank Keith Pelfrey for the excellent job he did last year in putting together a super program. If you haven’t been to a section meeting lately, you are missing a lot. Attendance is up and the programs have been very interesting. With the support of Rik Keeley and Jon Sovis from the Cleveland chapter, we have another interesting and educational program of technical and social meetings for you to enjoy this year.

All meetings will be held jointly with the Cleveland Section except for our separate Award Nights in May. You will find program details in the newsletter, web site, Facebook home page or pocket calendar sent under separate cover. Note that meetings will be held in the Akron Fairlawn Hilton on West Market Street on the second Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. unless otherwise indicated.

We start the year on September 12 with a tour of The Technology House in Streetsboro. They will show us the latest in CLIP, Continuous Liquid Interface Production. CLIP is a photochemical process using both light and oxygen to build parts. This is truly cutting edge technology and well worth the visit. The Technology House will also have dinner for us at their facility.

The Akron Section will again host the TPE Division TopCon entitled “Stretching Performance with TPEs” on September 21 and 22. This year they will also present a separate primer targeted toward newcomers to the field. This will be given the afternoon before the TopCon, on September 20. More information is available from our website or Facebook page.

If you would like to participate in the leadership and decision making, please join us at the board meetings. This year, board meetings are generally scheduled the first Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the conference room of the UA Polymer Engineering Academic Center. Please contact me for details.

I’m looking forward to meeting you at an upcoming Akron SPE event.

Robert Weiler,President 2016-2017 Akron Section of SPE330-283-9024 [email protected]

Incoming President2016/2017 Year,

Robert Weiler

Carbon CLIPIn October, The Technology House (TTH) was selected as a Beta-site for the new Carbon M1 printer. Currently, TTH is one of only a handful of service bureaus in the world with the ability to 3D print prototype and production parts from the Carbon M1 3D Printer. As of July 2016, TTH has three (3) Carbon M1 machines up and running. Here is a list of Carbon’s advantages over other 3D printing technologies are:

CLIP AdvantagesWide Array of Engineering Grade Polyurethane Materials.Faster Build SpeedsProduction Quality Surface FinishesConsistent Mechanical PropertiesConnected to Learn, Update and Improve Builds and Processes

The Carbon M1 CLIP MachineBuild platform size: 144mm x 81mm x 330mm

CLIP Engineering Grade MaterialsThe materials available for additive manufacturing on the CLIP machine were designed to rival current thermoplastic materials. Parts will be tough, resilient, isotropic and machinable. Each material was engineered to provide similar properties to production injection molding materials like ABS, Glass Filled Nylon, Polypropylene and Soft Durometer Santoprene. CLIP materials have consistent mechanical properties because the parts are isotropic. The resulting part will have characteristics similar to an injection molded thermoplastic.TTH currently builds in the following materials:• PR Prototyping• RPU Rigid Polyurethane• FPU Flexible Polyurethane• EPU Elastomeric Polyurethane• CE Cyanate Ester for high heat applications

TPE TOPCON 2016 – “Stretching Performance with TPEs”

The Akron Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers, along with the TPE Special Interest Group of the SPE, will be hosting a conference this fall that highlights a unique blend of polymers, Thermoplastic Elastomers. This conference will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Fairlawn on September 20-22, 2016. This conference, “Stretching Performance with TPEs”, includes a Pre-Conference in the form of a TPE Primer.

This conference is highly oriented to the title ”stretching” as it will feature presentations that involve use of Bio-Renewable Materials, 3D Printing, Wearable Technology and, of course, Materials, Modifications and Development. These various sessions will highlight the latest and newly developed technology, and the attributes that thermoplastic elastomers, coupled with recent nanotechnology, have to offer the market. This leap in technology development has helped to bring new materials to the forefront.

This conference will push the envelope of development as we feature two keynote addresses. Deborah Douglas (The Douglas Group), M&A of Thermoplastic Elastomers, will share information about what makes companies desirable in today’s marketplace and what the selling process is likely to bring. This is geared for both business owners and executives who create the health and prosperity of the companies where they work. In addition, Matthew Fielder (3D Inc.) is breaking through the current limitations of 3D printing to unlock new applications and growth markets worldwide. Gigabot, the company’s flagship technology, is the world’s largest low-cost, industrial strength 3D printer utilizing an esteemed group of specialty manufacturers, engineers, designers, universities in over 40 countries around the globe. 3D Inc., a recent Kickstarter recipient, will be discussing their new 3D manufacturing process. including their ecosystem of hardware innovations, software solutions and material science.

It was recently noted in the press that the worldwide demand for thermoplastic elastomers is projected to grow 5.2% per year through 2019. This growth in North America and Western Europe will be driven by ongoing product innovations, a continued push to replace traditional elastomers where applicable and some change from the current thermoplastic elastomers. The growth is slated for the TPV - Thermoplastic Vulcanizates in the motor vehicle, consumer and medical arenas. This growth is projected to be outpaced in the U.S. while it jump started overseas in India, southeast Asia, Japan and Africa. The demand continues to be steady in North America and Europe.

We have experienced locally a major shift in the business level as ExxonMobil has just constructed a worldwide technical and research center in Houston, Texas as their 20 year property lease recently expired in Akron. In addition, PolyOne is expanding their global footprint and expertise in thermoplastic elastomer innovation and design as they have recently announced they had acquired certain technologies and assets from Kraton Performance Polymers, Inc. The two companies also entered into a supply agreement, whereby Kraton will provide PolyOne certain raw materials used in production for the acquired business.

The end markets utilizing the acquired technologies span new and fast-growing applications in medical devices and personal care products. They have further informed that, "Since our highly successful TPE acquisition of GLS in 2008, we've continually invested and grown inglobalized TPE innovation and its broad value-add applications”.

A. Schulman has continued their portfolio modification into the automotive arena for both interior and exterior applications. They are known as a global solution provider for a variety of polymer compounds, including their TPE line of INVISION® products. In addition, Dow’s Multibase facility in Copley, Ohio continues to provide the very soft touch line of TPSiV, their silicone-based TPE products for automotive applications. Materials firm, Americhem Group, has acquired Vi-Chem Corp., a compounder based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Its the third acquisition in four years for this Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio-based company. Vi-Chem brings them extensive knowledge in various TPEs. This broadens the types of compounds and material solutions we can provide to the market.

We are excited to provide an opportunity to those who would like to learn more about the basics and latest developments in the TPE Industry. Come join us this fall as the Akron Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers, along with the TPE’s Special Interest Group, highlights these unique polymers and special applications. This conference will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Fairlawn on September 20-22, 2016.

Akron Section Society of Plastics Engineers Educational Foundation

1-16

The Akron Society of Plastics Engineers Educational Foundation operates exclusively for the benefit of and to carry out the purposes of the Akron Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers, which is to promote scientific and engineering knowledge relating to plastics by making educational scholarship grants to deserving students in the field of plastics engineering and related subjects. The Organization is supported primarily by contributions from the Akron Society of Plastics Engineers, the Society's individual members and corporations like yours affiliated with the polymer industry.

Since the inception in 1988, the Akron Society of Plastics Engineers Educational Foundation has grown to its current position through the hard work of many volunteers and the generosity of the local business community. Over the twenty-seven years that the foundation has been in existence, it has provided scholarships to over 250 young men and women totaling in excess of $320,000 to assist them in furthering their careers in the polymer industry.

Our goal is to continue to grow the assets of the Foundation in order to increase the number of scholarships awarded, as well as the size of the awards, and to do so in perpetuity. In doing this, we hope to be able to contribute to the supply of well-trained individuals to support the growth of the polymer industry in the Northeast Ohio area today and well into the future.

When the Foundation began its fund raising activities in 1988, we offered those companies who contributed $30,000 a scholarship in their name. To date we have five named scholarships, Newell/Rubbermaid, Goodyear, Ken Sharp Memorial and Jim Steiner Memorial scholarships. We are asking your company to help with the growth of well-trained individuals in the local polymer industry. Please print this page, fill out the information and mail it to Bob Wegelin, 13206 Kaufman Ave. NW Hartville, OH 44632.
