IPM Essen Starting in January 2015 Bosman Van Zaal will introduce a new corporate logo and house style. Orange is the new company colour because we are proud of our Dutch company and our sector expertise. The new logo will also provide sufficient opportunities for ties with other companies in the Green Innovators group, including Montera Engineering in Pijnacker, for example. Montera will use their traditional green colour in the new logo. All companies that are members of Green Innovators will contribute in various ways – and complement each other – in developing global horticulture. Henk and Gerard Peek, along with Marco Braam, are the Executive Directors. Their expressed goal is to see Bosman Van Zaal and Montera continue to develop into solid profitable enterprises. ‘Flying Dutchmen’ with in-depth expertise for their (international) customers. We will keep you posted on the latest developments via this newletter and through our media channels, Linkedln, YouTube and Twitter. Bosman Van Zaal recently signed a contract with the South Korean firm, Octo & Jain, for the design, engineering, supply and installation of a 3.4 ha greenhouse project for growing tomatoes. The greenhouse consists of two blocks with a service building in the middle. The project, with the application of Bosman Van Zaal’s new ClimaPora system, will be the first semi-closed greenhouse in Korea. This extremely sustainable and efficient system will use geothermal heating and cooling by means of heat pumps. The ClimaPora provides climate control through various functions: humidification, de- humidification, a mixture of indoor and outdoor air, ventilation and adiabatic cooling when outdoor climate conditions are dry. There will be diffuse glass on the roof. In addition, the design of the greenhouse is based on water conservation with optimum water efficiency from collecting rainwater for irrigation. Condensed water will also be collected and pumped back to the service station for reuse in the greenhouse. The project will also use the Cyclone irrigation unit, a patented Bosman Van Zaal system. A characteristic feature of the Cyclone is the extraction of CO 2 with a stable pH value, which results in better fertiliser absorption and therefore more stable quality of production per square metre. The Octo & Jain team, which has begun preparations for the project on site, will arrange the necessary local approvals. The Bosman Van Zaal team has started the engineering process. Both companies aim to complete the project around September 2015. | [email protected] Octo & Jain In past years Bosman Van Zaal has developed various projects in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The Lepage nursery near Angers, France, cultivates more than 2,300 varieties of border plants. In combi-nation with other supplies, Bosman Van Zaal is installing a new trans-port system. The soil goes from the ground bunker with a Javo Toploader to a Urbinati Trayfiller. Bosman Van Zaal places a cutting line in the workplace. The cuttings in pots – in stainless-steel trays – arrive at Crea-Tech’s Fanuc robot,

where the cuttings in pots (nine in a row) are placed in plastic crates. Once they are in the crates, using a specially designed crate buffer, 16 crates at a time can be removed from the workplace and transported to the land using two fork-lift trucks. The installation will be a huge saving for Lepage in time and labour. | [email protected]

With a view towards socially-respon-sible enterprise, Montera has helped improve the Van Winden tomato-growing nursery at Zevenhuizen, Netherlands. The lighting there plays a major role in sustainable operational management. Given the current, waterproof, conventional T fittings, which no longer met their requirements because of the low level of light, the time was right for Van Winden to switch to energy-efficient, sustainable LED lighting. They opted for the Prolumia LED,

the High Bay series of Philips LEDs, which are fed by Meanwell drivers. The advanced cooling of these fit-tings (‘heat pipe’ principle) ensures faster removal of the heat and longer product life. Use of a 120° aluminium reflector produces a nice, even distribution of light, provid-ing a good, safe workplace. Overall, the Montera installation will double the level of light in the Van Winden warehouse.| [email protected]

PROJECT

Van Winden

Early in 2015, Bosman Van Zaal and Hoogendoorn plan to set up a green-house pilot project for Rwanda Best as part of the SMART Horticulture pro-gramme. The aim of this project is to enable farmers in Rwanda to reinforce sustainable and profitable food pro-duction with attention given to food safety. By combining Dutch technol-ogy and expertise with the local ex-perience of farmers and knowledge from institutions, everyone concerned is looking at a clear win-win situation. The project is under the management of a consortium of Dutch compa-nies, Greenport Holland International. Bosman Van Zaal and Hoogendoorn

will build the pilot greenhouse. Rijk Zwaan, Koppert and DLV Plant will supply input and expertise in co-operation with the knowledge in-stitutions, Wageningen University, TNO (Applied Natural Science Research) and the BoP (agri-innova-tion centres in Ethiopia and Kenya). The development of protected crops will encourage vegetable farmers to raise both the quality and quantity of their production, thereby generating extra income. In turn, the extra in-come will make new investments pos-sible to increase productivity. Besides the pilot greenhouse, the consortium also comprises suppliers of vegeta-

ble seeds, fertilisers and pest control. Analysis of current post-harvest prac-tice and possible improvements in the chain already started in November 2014. SMART utilises technologi-cal solutions such the Bosman Van Zaal Cyclone and the Hoogendoorn process computer, iSii. A unique apect of this project is its focus on small-scale, local farmers in Rwanda. | [email protected]
