Head Teacher’s Message

Dear Parents/Carers Well, this year seems to have flown past but when I think back on all the events, activities, fun and learning that has taken place I wonder how we fit it all in! The year started with excitement for the opening of our new Springfield Nursery. This meant we had two cohorts of brand new children starting, some in yellow and some in white! The Nursery has been a huge success, with the EYFS and admin team doing a grand job of making the whole process run smoothly and ensuring that the children were made very welcome. Alongside this the same team also ensured that our new Reception children had a brilliant start to school life and that they settled into new routines, new friendships and new learning.

In the Autumn term we introduced yoga for infants and joined up with Brighton and Hove Albion to be able to deliver quality multi-skills and specific teaching. We also successfully implemented the first NHS flu vaccinations in school for all Year 2 children

We updated all our IT equipment with plasma interactive boards throughout the school and recently purchased class iPads.

Parents and children sponsored many charities including Children in Need, Chestnut Tree House and our own charity school in Gambia, from where we welcomed their Headteacher during the year to Springfield.

There was a big emphasis on safeguarding this year and all staff refreshed their knowledge on E-safety, child protection and had training on counter terrorism.

There are so many highlights over the year for me to mention but I particularly loved the whale fest, ice skating, moon rocks, tweeting Tim Peake in space, French Day, the Queen’s tea party, Worthing Children's parade, sports day and especially all the children's performances throughout the year.

Finally, as we draw to a close this year we have to say goodbye to some staff members, but I would like to personally say a big thank you to my Deputy for the last four years, Nicole Reeves. Mrs Reeves has been both a supportive, exceptional colleague and a friend and I will miss her greatly. However I wish her great success in her new headship.

I would like to wish all our Year 2 children the very best of luck in their new schools and let them know all the staff and myself are very proud of them.

I do hope you all have a happy and safe holiday and look forward to seeing you in September.

Attendance

Sports day The weather was good, the grass dry and the sporting events were brilliant! It was a pleasure to see every child, including our Ducklings, competing in a variety of events. The winning team was Green and they received the Lynne Austin cup.

Year 2 visit The Amex Stadium What a very special day the Year 2’s had at Falmer last week. Not only did we manage to get there on the train safely but we were treated like royalty. We had a behind the scenes tour of the stadium and were presented with certificates by Guy Butters, an ex-Brighton goalkeeper.

Year 2 Performance With the wonderful singing entrance, imaginative costumes through to the exuberant, dancing finale we were all well and truly entertained by the Year 2 performance of ’Meerkat Manners’. Well done to all the Year 2 team, especially Miss Cumming and Mrs Angelo. Leavers Assembly

On Thursday 21st July at 2pm all year 2 parents are invited to our leavers assembly in the school hall followed by tea and scones!

Jump Start Jonny Tonight we are welcoming Jump Start Jonny to our Year 2 Leavers party. (4.15-5.15pm) We are very lucky that our brilliant PTA have managed to secure him for this occasion as he is a very popular man now!! Lots of fun and excitement planned! It is always sad for the school to say good-bye to the Year 2 children at this time of year, but hopefully this will be just one of a variety of opportunities for the children to enjoy as we come to the end of term. Reception and Year 1 will also get a chance to dance with JSJ but at the earlier time of 3.15–4.00pm. Children will be taken to the hall direct from the classrooms by their teachers, so there is no need for parents to pick up until 4.00pm from their classrooms as usual.

PTA

On behalf of the staff I would like to thank the PTA for their dedicated hard work this year towards fund raising on behalf of the school. Without them we would be without many resources, playground equipment, fayres and events. Thank you all for your continued commitment to Springfield

Out of School Achievements

Mia Woods received a certificate from Rainbow Award Scheme for swimming 15m. Adam Woodcraft was awarded a yellow belt in Karate. Rose Mundey has achieved her Aqua School 25 metres Swimming Award.

Attendance

As you will be aware, we have been involved in a number of initiatives, both internally and externally, with the aim to support and improve the children’s attendance at school, and these will continue next year. We are delighted to announce that we have a number of attendance achievements to acknowledge and celebrate. Dolphins have been awarded the school certificate for the class with the highest percentage attendance for the academic year 2015-16 ! Congratulations on a great team effort. We would also like to congratulate

Sara Basma Michael McEntee Mia Woods Harrison Goatcher Jacob Hedges Louis Thomson Callum Peace for 100% attendance throughout the whole of this school year so far. We are sure everyone agrees that this is a fantastic achievement, which will have enhanced their learning and enjoyment at Springfield. However, the Career Best Percentage Attendance Award for the whole of

their time at Springfield, from September 2013 to date, has been achieved by Sidney Lingard, with 99.82%. This is an outstanding achievement and is one we deservedly acknowledge.

Junior Governors

As the term of office comes to a close for our Junior Governors (all of whom could have made the cabinet reshuffle!) I would like to thank them all for their hard work and brilliant ideas this year. They have made a great contribution to the school — well done.

After School Clubs

The After School Clubs will finish this week and we are delighted to confirm that the majority will be continuing in September. Reception children are able to sign up to a Club as from the Spring Term, January 2017. Years 1 and 2 children can register interest for starting in September by contacting club providers direct and details are available on the school website. Guitar Lessons

We currently have a guitar teacher coming in to school during the day to provide lessons to our Year 2 children. If your child is in Year 2 as from September and would like to have guitar lessons there will be flyers available as from the start of next term with enrolment details.

Piano Lessons

Mrs Wareham is our resident piano teacher who is happy to take on new children from September. Please enquire at the school office for contact details.

Ducklings Graduation and Picnic Next Tuesday our little Ducklings will be graduating from Springfield in their own special ceremony. I would like to thank the staff, parents and children for making the whole Nursery year such fun and rewarding.

If you would like more information on our fabulous Nursery please pick up an application form from the school office.

Just a reminder that from September we will be having all our hot school meals cooked at St Andrews and brought over to us ready for the children's lunch. The meals are cooked daily and make use of fresh produce and most importantly are designed especially for our Springfield children to enjoy. Information about special requirements will be sent out next week along with the new menus.

Chesswood Teachers at Springfield

Teachers from Chesswood will be on the Springfield playground on Monday,18th July, to support our smooth transition policy. Please come up and say hello to your new teachers so they will get to know you a little better.

Springfield Week The whole school participated in Rio Carnival this week with much enthusiasm. The sun was shining and many Olympic events were held outside. As I have been through the classes I have seen fantastic art work, mask making, Brazilian cooking, Rio dancing, map work and lots and lots of sport! We were supported during the week by a number of Davison's girls who supported in classes. Well done to the curriculum team who organised the week.
