OscarsThe glitz and glamour of Hollywood and the Oscars was the theme for the Foundation Shine Inc. annual major fundraiser dinner. Held at the magnificent and historic Norwood Concert Hall, the setting was very grand and fitting for our theme and our amazing guests, you could say the royalty of showbiz referring to Adelaide’s very own Ann Wills and the extremely talented and versatile Rhonda Burchmore, who jetted in from her Sydney home.

Our evening commenced on the red carpeted foyer and chandelier room with pre dinner drinks, where the ‘papparazzi’ captured guests arriving looking their absolute best and posing with life like statues of famous Hollywood stars, including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Marilyn, Elvis, George Clooney to name a few.

A special guest of Robyn’s niece Tyler, Rachel Leahcar attended. Tyler and Rachel have developed a very special friendship.

Inside beautifully set tables awaited our guests with Oscar inspired centrepieces to suit the theme.

Once the announcement was made by Eve Goodings to take their seats, the proceedings began with a warm welcome from Channel 7’s weekend newsreader Graeme Goodings.

There was a lot for guests to absorb and enjoy, giveaways, wine games, lucky dips, silent auction bidding and just catching up with friends over fine wines kindly donated by Ed Schild Estate Winery.

Like any Oscars night, there were individuals who were to be showcased and rewarded for their efforts – Robyn and Sharon took to the stage where they shared with all the amazing work being done by Natasha Miliotis of Mental Illness Fellowship of South Australia Inc and Madge McGuire, Director of Catherine House. Both of these incredible women took to the stage to receive their awards and share some insight into their organisations.

Graeme Goodings and Ann Wills were extremely entertaining with Ann sharing some of her showbiz secrets and looking very much the glamorous star she is adorned in her famous bling Ann is well known for.

Following this was a tribute to familiar faces who had lost their battles with mental illness, with Sharon performing a very moving rendition of When you Walk Through a Storm, to a slide show put together by Liam and Robyn.

With meals done, it wasn’t long before the fabulous Rhonda Burchmore and her gorgeous dancers, Laura May and Ebony Wright appeared on stage – Rhonda and the girls took us through an amazing musical journey full of song and dance with Rhonda sharing her story of personal loss of very close friend Dianna Bliss who died suffering mental illness.

Rhonda wowed guests in the aisle thrilling one in particular Rory O’Neill with an up close a personal moment under the spotlight !!

Andrew Maros was our Auctioneer extraordinaire and did a great job coercing guests to dig deep.

Graeme and Eve Goodings finished the formalities of the night by drawing raffles and lucky door prizes, then it was a case of Lucky 7 in full swing, with their amazing big band – the dance fest had begun.

It was a wonderful night which raised some serious funding - $25,000 which resulted in Catherine House and Mental Illness Fellowship of South Australia Inc. both being presented with cheque donations of $12,000.00 each.

On the night further discussions took place with a very generous anonymous supporter, who has committed to a further $10,000.00 donation.

Clearly, the work we are continuing to do would not be possible if it was not for the support we receive by people attending our functions – Our small, but incredibly enthusiastic and hard working committee appreciate your help immensely and in particular our event sponsors Ed Schild Estate, Cleveland Freightlines and Whiteline.

Carer’s Pamper Day

In celebration of their extraordinary work and contribution, MIFSA would like to invite Carers of people with mental illness to our Carers Pamper Day.

Hosted by the MIFSA Respite Team, the event will be held in Carers Week on Wednesday 17th October 2012

Please find attached our Carers Pamper Day invitation and help us share this celebration with as many carers as possible.

Shine is an organization which strives to make a difference to the day to day lives of those suffering from mental illness, extending to include their carers by creating public awareness and acceptance. Foundation Shine Incorporated has very kindly donated 30 pamper gift packs for us to distribute to Carers attending on the day.

Something to Ponder About 10% of Australians will be affected by anxiety disorders at some point in their life.

About 20% of people will be affected by depression.

Postnatal depression affects 10 – 20% of new mothers to some degree.

Three percent of Australians are affected by psychotic illness such as schizophrenia & bipolar mood disorder.

Approximately 2% of the population will experience some type of eating disorder.

Around 2000 Australians die by suicide every year, affecting families, friends, workplaces and communities.

8 August 2012 Robyn May and Sharon Middleton Foundation Shine Via email: [email protected] and [email protected] Dear Sharon and Robyn Today we received, with such great pleasure, an envelope from Foundation Shine with a $12,000 donation to MIFSA! Thank you so very much for this precious and much needed support. Of course your involvement also stretches much further than today's amazing gift. Recently I was interrupted by some delectable aromas wafting through the building, so I followed my nose and found myself in the Activity Program kitchen. I then had a "guess which ingredients you can smell" conversation with some MIFSA participants who were involved in a cooking group. I also took the time to look around our lovely kitchen and silently thanked Foundation Shine for your support which made our kitchen a reality three whole years ago! Since then Foundation Shine has made considerable differences to school children, who have been a part of MIFSA mental health workshops, via your support of our Education Program. More people have been able to access counselling at MIFSA for a period of time, due to the support and fundraising of Foundation Shine. Today I took your precious donation to the Finance Team, and after much celebration and thanks to you both, I came back to my office past the Respite Team. On the filing cabinet I could see the Carer Pamper Packs which Robyn creates and again so kindly donates. The beautifully created packs are presented to Carers who spend some time in our Respite House, as they take some well earned rest from their caring roles. Having made the often courageous choice to give themselves some time away from their loved one, these Carers are without exception totally surprised to receive a gift as well! Many of the Carers have shared with us how special the Carer Pamper Packs make them feel. Thank you Robyn. In a very similar way, at MIFSA we all feel very special and honoured to have an ongoing relationship with you: Sharon, Robyn and Foundation Shine. Please pass on our very heartfelt thank you's to everyone at Foundation Shine for "sharing our journey" and making such a difference in the lives of people living with mental illness, their families and friends. Yours sincerely

AWARDS

Foundation Shine – Service to Mental Health Awards

At our gala dinner, two awards were presented. They were magnificent statues, kindly donated by Maria Kenda, Kenda Craft Jewellery, standing tall on two engraved bases.

To give you all a little more insight, please find information concerning our extremely worthy recipients for their service to Mental Health.

Natasha Miliotis, CEO, Mental Illness Fellowship S.A. Inc.

Natasha was one of Foundation Shine’s first contacts when we began our journey and she has continually been an inspiration to us. We are proud that we have such a close association with her and this wonderful organization.

Jane Doyle, Channel 7 Newsreader and Patron of MIFSA wrote the following words about Natasha which Robyn had pleasure in passing on to our guests :

Natasha Miliotis is a shining light in the Mental Health sector. She is skilled, energetic and dedicated to her role as CEO of the Mental Illness Fellowship of South Australia Inc.

She is a wonderful and effective advocate for people whose mental health challenges leave them and their families feeling neglected and alone. Natasha’s “passion for” and “focus on” improving services for everyone affected by mental illness is enhanced by her humanity and warmth. She is an inspirational leader in her field.

Catherine House, accepted by Madge McGuire, Director

Madge McGuire is another very inspirational lady and Director of this wonderful organization.

Women come to Catherine House from across the whole spectrum of society including those who have gone to private schools, university or had a career. They seek to offer women to transform their lives through the various support programs that are provided. Robyn brought the Catherine House logo to everyone’s attention which as you can see in our newsletter is a woman ‘standing tall’. Her legs are elongated to give the impression of inner strength and resilience. She is holding her arms up in celebration of taking control and giving herself shelter in a difficult time. She is not standing still, her legs are different lengths to emphasize movement – she is moving forward, she is progressing forward, she is progressing positively with her life. Gold suited this image as it it precious and has enduring qualities. It is resilient and albeit it looks rough in its raw state with a bit of effort it SHINES.
