Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu greetings to friends andfamily of Nelson Central School.

Speech competitionsOur school was very well represented by Kezia H (R2) andLachlan M (R7), ably supported by their teachers andclassmates, at the Nelson City Cluster Schools annualspeech competitions hosted by Clifton Terrace School lastThursday. Kezia made an excellent case for taking actionto protect chimpanzees while Lachlan stimulated ourinterest in basketball by telling us many things we hadnt

previously thought seriously about. Well done to both ofyou we are really proud of you and appreciate the effortyou put in to win the school competition and to then go onand represent our school.

week as part oftheir sciencecurriculum workon heating andcooling. Lucy Dwrote

On Wednesday the 8th of September we had a hangi. Wewere having the Hangi as part of our inquiry mahi. All thewahine that came to help prepared the kai and the tanewere digging the hole. On Thursday all of the Te Pouahitamariki were very excited. Me and my dad came early in

the morning to help. At half past 5 we started to burn thefire. We used the fire as our energy source to heat theirons. Then a while after we started to line the baskets withcabbage leaves. When that was done we put the hot ashes

for the fire back in on top of the hot irons. After that wewrapped the kai in tin foil and muslin cloth. Then we put itdown in to the hangi pit. When the food was in we used wet

cloths and sacks to cover it. To cover the whole pit we puttarpaulin down, and then covered it with dirt. The Hangiwas yum and it filled me up!
