DFO

First of all I wish to let you know that some procedures on entering a new painting into the Gallery have changed.

You are now allowed to hang your own paintings if you wish. Margo Vigorito has offered to act as Curator by fixing it up on the wall if she thinks it doesn’t look good. Margo (now wishing to be called Margarita) had her own gallery in America, so I trust that she will do a good job there. Kath was very good at hanging the paintings too.

Now, please follow these procedures:

Fill out a label (sticker) and stick it onto a corf lute square (in the bottom drawer of the bedside table there) then place it on the gallery wall with your painting. At the same time also write the details (as well) on the forms beside the stickers so that I can type them up whenever I am in the gallery (which is most days). That will serve as a list of those needing to be typed, and I will cross them off as I do them. Make sure you put the Exit date (3 months from the date hung) i.e. Hung on 14th July 17 – Exit Date ,3 months to the 14th October 17. Remember Hanging Fees are $10 per painting from 1st July, but you can enter four small paintings not exceeding 60cms x 60cms for the $10 cost of one larger painting. The same rule applies as when the fee was $5.

Another thing, way back three years ago it was approved that we have an “Artist of the Month” in the Gallery. Glenda Lake has put her hand up to start that off from next weekend. The Artist of the Month will be able to hang any number of paintings in the front corner along the wall where that one rail is, BUT it will cost $6 per painting to have that solo Exhibition there. It has to cost more than the ordinary cost of $3.33 per month that the rest of us pay because of the number of paintings displayed for Sale, and the potential of selling them. The usual Commission of 30% will be taken from any sales. If anyone has any qualms about this, please give some feedback. This was approved a long time ago but never happened, and that was the reason for just the one rail there.

We already have several people who have called into the gallery and are already interested, so if you wish to join the queue please let me know.

Pat

Show your stuff at The Making Place17 March 2017

Talented locals are invited to share their skills as part of this year’s Cairns Festival.

The Making Place will be a key feature of Cairns Festival 2017, hosting an eclectic mix of entertainment and activities.

“The Making Place was introduced last year and we’re looking forward to bringing it back in 2017,” said Cairns Regional Council’s Cultural Services Committee Chair Cr Linda Cooper.

“It’s a dedicated space on the Esplanade where visitors will find musicians, performers, multicultural activities, artists and a host of interactive workshops. “It will be a place to experience the best of what our community has to offer.

“We’d love to hear from anyone who would like to share their talent, skills or ideas as part of The Making Place.”

The theme for this year’s Cairns Festival Grand Parade is “Shine” and this will flow into the myriad events that will fill the 2017 program.

“The Making Place, in particular, will give our community the chance to glow, beam and radiate the warmth of our cultures – we look forward to sharing and celebrating what makes you sparkle,” Cr Cooper said.

The Making Place will operate from Monday 28 August until Friday 1 September on the Western Events Lawn, near the Esplanade lagoon, and will incorporate the Festival Main Stage.

Applications to be part of The Making Place are now open until Thursday 13 April. For more information or to submit an application, visit www.cairns.qld.gov.au/festival.
