Pull-out-and-keep village clubs listing inside!
Memories of the Soap Box Grand Prix
Class of ’77, where are they now?!

Memories of the Silverstone Soap
Box Grand Prix
I came across these recently. They
were taken in the summer of 1994,
when the village held a rather unusual
event; a Soapbox Grand Prix.
This event had previously been run in
Blakesley for a number of years. For
whatever reason, they gave it up and
Silverstone decided to take it on. As
you can see, the ‘cars’ started on a
ramp in the Linnells timberyard and
ran in pairs down the High Street,
fi nishing opposite the Surgery in
Whittlebury Road.
The village entered into the spirit
of the thing, with various other
attractions. I didn’t get to photograph
much of the action, as I was involved
with the Jordan F1 car in the Infant
School playground. The school
off ered a chance to have your photo
taken in the car, for a fee which would
go to school funds; I took the photos
and we did well over 100 during
the day.

Police News
As summer approaches and we get closer to the Formula 1 and MotoGP events
at Silverstone this year, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself as
the Superintendent leading on this year’s policing operations.
This year, the 2018 Formula 1 British Grand Prix takes place between 5-8 July
and the 2018 MotoGP British Grand Prix takes place between 23-26 August.
My offi cers will be out and about throughout both weekends and will be on
hand to off er support and advice to local people as well those attending
the events.
Our policing operations get underway on Thursday, July 5, for Formula 1, and
on Thursday, August 23, for MotoGP. A large amount of spectators are expected
to arrive at the circuit and neighbouring campsites on these days.
The Highways Agency will soon be publishing their traffi c plans for both events
which will detail the road closures for both weekends as well as the diversion
routes. We will have a section on our website dedicated to both of these events
in the run-up where you will be able to see details of these road closures and
more about the policing operations.
You can also keep up-to-date with what we are doing during both weekends
by following us on Twitter @NorthantsPolice and liking us on Facebook at
Northamptonshire Police.
I want to reassure you as part of the local community living in and around
Silverstone that we are working closely with Silverstone Circuit and other
partners including the Highways Agency to ensure the smooth running of
both events.
If you have any concerns during the two race weekends, please do not hesitate
to call us on 101 or 999 in an emergency.
Superintendent Chris Hillery
Head of Local Policing

Class of 1977 - Where are they now?
Education in Silverstone has dramatically changed over the last 12 months
moving into a 21st century school building designed to give our community
facilities to deliver education for many years to come. Is it also time to refl ect
of the pupils and tails from years ago.
Below is a photograph taken back in July 1977 at Silverstone Junior School.
The teacher is Mrs Denney and a few names of the pupils are obvious but some
names are harder to remember. So, I challenge one of the pupils, perhaps Ginny
Hart or Ian Baughan to “mark the register” and, where possible, tell us what has
happened to the “Class of 77”?

Tiggers Appeal
Would you be interested in running the ‘Tiggers’ playgroup?
‘Tiggers’ is the local playgroup for 0-5 year olds that takes place on the
1st and 3rd Thursday afternoon of each month at the Methodist Chapel
in Silverstone. From September 2018 I will no longer be able to run the
group so I am looking to fi nd somebody to take my place! If you are
interested and would like to fi nd out more, please get in touch.

Bloodwise Blenheim Triathlon
Thank you to everyone who sent their kind thoughts
following the loss of our granddaughter Emily Brown.
On the 26th of February, 7 year old Emily lost her
two year battle with Acute lymphoblastic Lymphoma,
with a relapse to Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. After her
bone marrow transplant, she also suff ered for
5 months with Adino Virus (cold virus) and possibly
HLH (Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis). She
eventually died of multiple organ failure after
contracting Pneumonia.
Emily was a bubbly vibrant, dancing, singing, butterfl y
and rainbow loving little girl who bravely and stoically faced her gruelling
treatment, we are all so, so proud of her and absolutely devastated by this loss.
From the outset we were appalled by the armoury of drugs used on Emily, and
their short and long term side eff ects. Research into cancers is at a threshold
with moves towards less evasive and more specifi c treatments for children:
both pharmaceutical and biotechnologically.
Emily was a generous soul and raised money herself for various cancer
charities (primarily through baking). She was always willing to off er a smiling
photo to help others fundraising and touch people’s hearts all over the world.
Our daughter, Katy Patient (Emily’s aunt) is again taking part in the Bloodwise
Blenheim Palace Triathlon on 2nd of June. And, this year will be joined by
our son, Anthony Brown (Emily’s father). Donations can be made through
JustGiving; their team is called CapableBrowns4Emily. Emily’s case will further
the understanding of blood cancers, so will your donation. Please give
generously and share on social media widely.

Brickle Pocket Park
A pair of Mallard have been spotted on the pond.
The display of cowslips & primroses were brilliant this year, other wild fl owers
to follow include Pink Campion, Oxeyed daisies, Cornfl owers, yellow
rattle, Irispsendacorus, some native Clematis vitalba (old man’s beard) have
been planted.
Brickle Pocket Park belongs to the Village, so PLEASE use and enjoy it. It is run
by volunteers and more help is needed, this gives a chance to be in touch with
nature. Working parties take place for a couple of hours the fi rst Saturday
mornings of the month.
If anyone is interested in lending a hand, please contact Eb Brown.

Every year we help over 450,000 young people in the UK enjoy new adventures; to experience the outdoors, interact with others, gain confi dence and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. And it’s not just young people who can get in on the action. Working alongside our youth members are thousands of adult volunteers, with a huge variety of roles and opportunities available.
Why not strengthen your CV while making a real impact on the lives of young people?

Can you see the elephant in the room?
More importantly, has anyone seen an elephant on the village sign?
Yes, there is an elephant on our village
sign at the top of the High Street. We
may pass the sign many times and not
know the signifi cance to some features
on the sign. The signifi cance of the
elephant is simple; from just after WWII
to the late fi fties, Silverstone was the
winter stopover for Harry Cody’s
Circus, ironically on Winter Hills.
Stories at the time abound of hearing
the lion’s roar echoing on a still winter
evenings along with seeing the
elephants with the mahout on their
daily trek to drink from the spring on
the White Horse wall, opposite Silson
Surgery. Elephant dung was highly
sought after to enrich the fl ower beds!
Cody’s Circus travelled the length and breadth of the country from northern
Scotland, Cornwall and Essex but after their exhaustive season they were
welcomed back into the Silverstone community. Harry Cody’s circus off ered
the full range of a contemporary circus including lions, horses, ponies, dogs,
clowns, tumblers and trapeze artists.
Hold the Front Page
There are many tales, some true and
some false, about the behaviour of
Cody’s Circus employees and animals.
I will give more details in the next issue
of News & Views.
Did the Towcester Magistrates in 1948 let
off lightly Marco, from Silverstone’s Cody’s Circus, as reported in Northampton
Chronicle & Echo? More stories will follow.

Village meeting report
The annual village meeting was
held in April and there was a good
turnout again.
Cllr Ian Morris braved the wrath of
local residents concerned about the
state of the roads. Questions were
asked as to why temporary repairs
were done so poorly. Ian explained
is that when a repair becomes an
emergency, this has to be done before
the scheduled full repair and so holes
are fi lled rapidly whist awaiting the
given time to do a full repair. He also
confi rmed that major repairs would
happen over the next few months as
the Women’s cycling race and Grand
Prix approach. Even he had to agree
Whittlebury Road was poor! He an-
swered many diffi cult questions from
the audience and, despite the absence
of a fl ak jacket and hard hat, handled
himself with his usual aplomb.
We welcomed Silverstone Circuit’s
“Grand Fromage”, Stuart Pringle, who
explained about hotel developments,
the new Silverstone Experience
(a destination for visitors, open all
year round), the negotiations over
the Grand Prix and the resurfacing of
the whole circuit (shame there were
no leftovers for the village roads!).
Stuart seemed very keen to work more
closely with the residents and to keep
us up to date with developments. I
hope we see more of him at these
meetings. I, for one, was impressed
that with everything kicking off up
there, he had the time to attend our
humble meeting.
Nick Ashby did a sterling job changing
hats to explain the news from the
SRA, Community Speedwatch,
Neighbourhood Plan and
Neighbourhood Watch. Having
listened to his explanation of pitch
management, many in the audience
understood what a fi ne balance the
needs of football versus cricket can
be! We are very lucky to have some-
one like Nick who takes on so many
roles supporting village initiatives. It
would be great if more would step
forward to take the strain off the few.
Sad to see no one was available from
the new school to talk to us about
how they are getting on with all their
various projects. I have been in
conversation with them recently and
they plan to ensure they send regular
articles to News & Views so we can
share them with you.
Other presentations and reports
covered reports from the pocket
parks, Northants Police, pathways,
the fi nance committee, gardening club
and the Poors Allotment charity.
The meeting was long, many
questions were asked but much was
covered. Next meeting is in the
diary for 10th April 2019 and I would
encourage everyone to come along to
fi nd out what is happening fi rst hand
and ask questions of the speakers.
Minutes can be found on the village
website www.silverstonevillage.org.

‘Woodstock’ with nettles. Richard Palmer
A village of villages....
The neighbourhood plan is a way of
putting into law the community’s
agreement on how things should
develop. This is a national thing and
perhaps many of us had thought this a
very new concept. It is not.
The wonderful map inside the last
‘News and Views’ reminded me of my
move into Silverstone some 30 years
ago. I live on one of those ‘blue blob’
woodyards (Hazelwood). And my
solicitor, in her diligence, made sure
that there were no issues in the
change of use of the land from
industrial to residential. The planning,
which involved both parish and district
councils, was fully committed to
ensuring the woodyard heritage of
Silverstone. There was Westminster
involvement in creating a permanent
right to a alternate woodyard at the
top of West End, where it used to meet
the A43. A specifi c issue, not a
compete view, but still a National
commitment to ensuring our
village heritage.
And when I fi rst moved in my friends
from around the country wanted a few
words on what Silverstone was like.
I told them it was a village of villages -
wonderful community islands
separated by public rights of way
across farmland. Perhaps we should
be giving our new developments
their own community ‘titles’. I’d like to
see as far as possible the concept of
our named sub-villages having a
logical boundary which ideally is farm
or community space.
