Return of Title IV FundsPolicyA portion of Title IV Aid may have to be returned to the appropriateagency when a student withdraws or is terminated.

The amount of Title IV Aid to be returned will depend upon thedate of the students last day of attendance.

Of cial noti cation of withdrawal must be either in writing ororally to the Director.

    Example:

Student withdraws with a last day of recorded attendanceon the 32nd day of the billing period. There are 78 days in thebilling period:

Satisfactory Academic Progress PolicyAll students must maintain the following standards of satisfactory academic progress. Students failingto meet these standards will result in the suspension of Title IV nancial aid.

The satisfactory academic progress will be monitored differently depending on the program of study. For programs that are two or more academic years in length, progress will be monitored the rst timeat the end of their third quarter and subsequently every quarter after until graduation. For programsless than two academic years in length, progress will be monitored at the end of each quarter untilgraduation. Students should contact the Of ce of Financial Aid for questions regarding the intent andinterpretation of this policy.

GRADE POINT AVERAGE REQUIREMENT(Qualitative Component)All students, when evaluated, must have a cumulative 2.0 or better on a 4.0 scale. Students who fallbelow a cumulative 2.0 at their evaluations will be placed on academic probation for the upcomingquarter. Failure to achieve the cumulative grade point average requirement after this probation quarter

will result in a suspension of nancial aid eligibility. The suspension of nancial aid eligibility will continueuntil the cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better is met. Students who are on probation will be reviewed at theend of each quarter.

If a student does not have a grade point average of at least 2.0 at the end of the probationary quarter, the student shall be suspended from school for one quarter, unless mitigating circumstances exist.

Mitigating Factors:Students who do not meet the GPA standard will be placed on probation unless the school determinesmitigating factors exist. Mitigating factors include but are not limited to severe illness, severe injury ofthe student, death of a family member, employment responsibilities, or an unforeseen or unavoidable

    personal circumstance.

Noti cation of Academic Probation:Students placed on academic probation will receive a letter explaining their probation. This letter willexplain the consequences of not correcting their academic de ciencies. Once a student has metthe GPA requirement, a meeting will be held with the student and the Director to inform he/she is nolonger on probation.

Credits Earned:When a student repeats a course for any reason, the higher of the two grades earned in the coursewill be used in computing the students cumulative grade point average. Grades earned by transfer

students at a previous institution or by pre-testing, withdrawal, incomplete, pass/fail classes, auditedclasses, and non-credit remedial courses are not used in the cumulative grade point average but areconsidered credits attempted.

Any student failing to achieve a GPA of 2.0 at the end of all required program credits will not be allowedto graduate with a degree or diploma. At no time can a student exceed 1.5 times the standard timeframeand receive the original academic credential for which they enrolled. Appeal ProcedureAny student certi ed as not demonstrating satisfactory progress has the opportunity to appeal theaction.

Appeals must be in writing to the Director. The appeal must explain any mitigating circumstances that

prevented the student from successfully completing his/her coursework and must be accompaniedby supporting documentation.

Each appeal evaluation is an individual judgment based on the students record and personalcircumstances. Successful student appeals will result in an appropriate individual adjustment to thesatisfactory progress policy. If the appeal is approved, the student will continue to receive nancial aidfor an additional quarter. If all academic de ciencies are not corrected after that quarter, the studentwill not be eligible for any additional nancial aid until the de ciencies are corrected.

Examples of mitigating circumstances for which an appeal may be made may include, but are not limitedto severe illness, severe injury of the student, death of a family member, employment responsibilities,or an unforeseen or unavoidable personal circumstance. The appeal must also explain why the

circumstances no longer exist and what the student will do to ensure that they will meet SatisfactoryAcademic Progress standards in the future.

Appeals can take up to two weeks to review. It is the responsibility of the student to submit an appealin a timely manner if he/she wishes to have suspensions reconsidered and aid reinstated for subsequentquarters.

In the event the students are not satis ed with an appeal decision, they may appeal to the Presidentof Newport Business Institute. All decisions made by the President are nal.

Change of Program/Additional Degree. When students seek an additional degree or change programs, only the credits attempted and gradesearned for those courses applicable to the new program will be used to determine satisfactory progress. All previously attempted credits will count toward the maximum allowed for the new program of study.

Transfer Credits.Transfer credits that apply to the program count toward the actual timeframe (quantitative standard)of a students program, but not toward the students GPA (qualitative standard).

    Transferability of Credits (High Schools)

Articulation agreements are in place with several local high schools. The Dean of Students will revieweach class taken by the potential student and compare the grade earned with the guidelines(minimum B or better) set by Newport Business Institute. Students attending high schools participatingin the articulation agreement program will be given academic transfer of credit upon the satisfactorycompletion of subjects accepted by Newport Business Institute. Students who receive transfer of creditswill be noti ed by their Academic Advisor of their revised schedule.

    Transferability of Credits (Postsecondary Schools)

de ned as average or higher) for any course submitted. Transcripts are required for transfer credit to be considered.
