Principal’s Message
Welcome to 2019
Welcome back to our continuing
students and families and a warm
welcome to all our new students and
families. I hope you all had a fabulous holiday break
from school routines and are looking forward to another
wonderful year at Newcastle Middle School.
Jenny Moody, Director Educational Leadership, has
asked me to relieve again this term as Principal. Belinda
is currently relieving as PEO Learning and Wellbeing.
She is enjoying this new position and has a great skillset
and experience to underpin this vital role.
We have had a really smooth start to the year so far and
students are settling in well to new classes, teachers,
school etc. We welcome Jess Stoddard to our school
and congratulate her on achieving a permanent position
here on merit selection. Jess is working with Clare and
Shane on Room 6 and we are excited to have her as
part of our school family.
New programs we have organised for fitness and
wellbeing have proved highly engaging. Dance sessions
on Fridays with Lisa, which we commenced Term 3
2018, continue to be very positively received. We have
started an adapted Karate / Rock and Water Program
with Sam and Bec on Mondays. Staff and students alike
are really enjoying the sessions and improvements are
already evident.
School Leaders Induction Assembly
We announced our elected School Leaders from Year 8
at a special induction assembly. Proud family members
came to share this wonderful experience and pin the
badges on. Voting was very close and we are very
pleased to announce that Katinka Pettett, Noah Hanson
and Jack Burkill are our 2019 School Leaders. They will
do a great job as role models for their peers and as
ambassadors for our school.
Katinka Noah Jack
Congratulations to you all.

Individual Learning Plan Meetings
If you haven’t already been contacted, families will be
contacted shortly to organise semester 1 Individual
Learning Plan meetings (ILP’s). Your participation in
these meetings ensures the goals set for your child
reflect home and school focus areas including, where
appropriate, delivery of agreed aspects of your child’s
individual NDIS package therapy during school hours. If
you are unable to attend in person, a meeting can be
organised to be completed by phone. Thanks for your
support and please do not hesitate to contact your
child’s class teacher if you have any questions.
Newcastle Middle School emails our school newsletter
to our families and community. The newsletters are also
available on the Newcastle Middle School website.
School Community Charter The Department of Education’s School Community
Charter outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers,
educators and school staff in NSW public schools to
ensure our learning environments are collaborative,
supportive and cohesive. Important points in the charter
to ensure respectful learning environments are: that
we treat each other with respect; we prioritise the
wellbeing of all students and staff; unsafe behaviour is
not acceptable in our schools; we work together with
the school. A flyer is attached for you to read.
Driveway / Drop Off by all drivers
Drop off and pick up times are always very busy and I
seek your ongoing co-operation to ensure our driveway
operates as safely and efficiently as possible.
Assisted School Transport Program drivers and travel
support officers have completed our induction morning
tea and discussions.
For parents who bring their child, please hold onto your
child as you enter / exit the driveway and remain with
your child until active supervision commences. Morning
bell is 8.45am, classes start at 9am. End of school day is
2.40pm when the bell rings in readiness for bus duty
staff to call students as their parent, carer or ASTP or
respite vehicle arrives for pick up.Please let us know if
there are any issues. The driveway duty officer wears a
yellow hi-vis vest.
Reminder request to our families who have carers
dropping off or picking up their child from school:
We would appreciate your ongoing support if you
have a carer dropping off or picking up your child from
school to remind them to line up in the transport
queue. This is in preference to parking on the
roadside, even if it is on the school side kerb of
Christo Road. We have had a few safety concerns
about carers who may be new to the school or your
young person and are learning our school processes
and routines. We are avoiding any safety issues of
the busy road with many cars passing or parked close
by and thank you for your co-operation in this safety
matter.
Thank you for helping us keep our kids safe!
Kind regards,
Judy Mouthaan

Volunteers are needed please We are always in need of community volunteers to
assist with the provision of programs at school and in the
community. If you are able to spare some time to help
with activities such as weekly swimming especially as
we need to ensure the correct number of spotters and
ratios for students with particular health needs, helping
in the classrooms and with fitness, etc. we would be very
grateful. Please contact the school and we will organise
necessary paperwork and induction orientation when
convenient for you and our volunteer co-ordinator,
Lenore Hanney.
Anaphylaxis health reminder to all Newcastle Middle School is concerned about the safety
and wellbeing of all our students. Many of you will know
someone who is affected by anaphylaxis, a life
threatening allergic reaction. Our school does its best to
be an allergy aware school.
Staff have completed their mandatory annual training in
severe allergy / anaphylaxis management and we
implement lots of strategies to help keep students at risk
of anaphylaxis as safe as we can. We have current
students who live with the risk of anaphylaxis to foods
and insect stings.
As a reminder, we request that you do not send foods
containing nuts, eggs or seafood with your child to
school. With increased awareness and understanding
of anaphylaxis, you will be able to help protect those
around you.

Canteen Program Our student operated Canteen program will commence
Friday week 3. This valuable program develops
Numeracy, Literacy, teamwork, co-operation and
essential independent living skills in our students. We
have a specially chosen Canteen Team cohort who
engages in distributing and tallying orders, shopping for
ingredients, food preparation, deliveries and follow-up
cleaning tasks.
Order forms have been sent home and are due back
each Tuesday, if your child wishes to place an order.
School Banking Day Reminder Don’t forget that Wednesday is School
Banking day and students should bring
in their weekly deposit.
For every deposit made at school, no
matter how big or small, students will
receive a silver Dollarmites token. Once
students have individually collected 10
tokens they can redeem them for an exclusive School
Banking reward item in recognition of their regular
savings habits.
Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at
Newcastle Middle School.
Assembly Awards This section is a new addition to our fortnightly
newsletter. Each fortnight students who receive an
Assembly award for the period will be also recognised in
our newsletter.
I was delighted to present a large number of awards at
our first assembly. Staff nominates students for their
achievements and improvements in a variety of
curriculum areas, citizenship, being a star student, etc.
Award points accrue to lead towards Bronze, Silver and
