Advanced Directives What is a Power of Attorney used for?
A Power of Attorney is a document in which you appoint someone else to act on your behalf on matters that you specify.
A Power of Attorney can be made to start immediately, or upon mental incapacity.
Virginia Living Will A Living Will is a document that allows an
individual to give decide ahead of time, what should be done for their health, in the event they no longer can make decisions because of illness or incapacity. For example a living will can give instructions about treatments that should be or should not be pursued by health care providers or caregivers
A Durable DNR Order Form (Do Not Resuscitate) does not expire and remains in effect until the patient or someone designated to act on the patient’s behalf revokes the order. Virginia EMS providers CANNOT honor a Living Will or a DNR from another state.
