Burning Questions (YESTERDA Y¶S PARKING LOT)

Will our work with coaches start on June 4? Who is my coach? *****

Will we be paid during Foundations? How will I pay my bills while away for a

month?

What are next steps for placement? What factors are involved in choosing Residency placement?

Can we get a list of explanations for the interview feedback?

How has NLNS refined their practices throughout the years and how can we use these

lessons for our personal growth?

School House Rock: UEF Building Blocks

The Residency Year  is about lear ning to use the UEF to drive student gains in your  ³house´! So, you will wor k in small gr oups (3 gr oups of thr ee, 1 gr oup of two) to

of adults who implement best pr actices to yield academic success for all students.

Gr oup Task: Label each sentence strip you wer e given with one of the UEF

categories. Use the sentence strips, masking tape, and EXPO (only) mar ker s todemonstr ate how the pieces come together  to for m a pentagon shaped school house.

Individual Task: Use your written r eflection f r om ³Courage to Lead ́ to flesh out what

you have a ³str ong handle on´ that will hold up at least two (2) differ ent sides of your

gr oup¶s pentagon. Take two (2) of the gr een hands. Write your name on the white

side. Use a SHARPIE (only) to captur e that which you ³have a handle on´ on the gr een

Method: We use the Ur ban Excellence Fr amewor k to focus the Foundational Year on thosefew things that most dr amatically drive student achievement.

± The Leader ship Tr ajector y is the r oadmap that drives our  lear ning as a local and nationalcommunity of leader s and your gr owth as a New Leader .

Readiness: The Foundational Year (including

Save the Last Word for Me!

Group Discussion Protocol

Teaching Smart People How to Learn by Chris Argyris

-Choose a highlighted passage that resonated with you from last night¶s

reading which you found interesting, important or provocative. (2 mins)

-Use an index card to reflect on why you chose this passage and/or why

this passage resonated with you. (3 mins)

-Kennietha will start the round asking one person to share their selected

passage/sentence.

-At least 2 people must comment on the selected passage BEFORE the

initial resident is allowed to share their thinking. Once two folks have

commented, the initial resident must then share why they chose thispassage. (Thus, save the last word for me«)

-The initiating resident must call on another cohort member to read their

selected passage/sentence to kick off the next round.

*30 mins. (Goal: 4 rounds)

Orientations and Mindsets

HARDWORK

A lear ning orientation is r equir ed for a successful Foundational Year . We show up each day 100% r eady to dive deep, do the har d wor k, andpush our selves to the fullest.

³The har dest thing to manage in this wor k may be your self.´-Residents must acquir e new ways to manage themselves (e.g. str ess, long days, emotional r esponses, lear ning styles, communicationstyles) in or der  to develop the r esilience r equir ed for  the Foundational Year and school leader ship.

The school leader  is always ³under a micr oscope´ or  ³in the f ishbowl´ and subject to the scr utiny of other s. At times Foundations and locallear ning sessions will feel like this. Residents will have to lear n how to toler ate that kind of space while taking the necessar y risks to lear n andgr ow.

ENERGY

³This is a mar athon, not a sprint.´ - Jon Schnur

ACTION & AGENCY The Foundational Year  (including Summer Foundations) is not a ³sit and get´.

Residents will be expected to r egular ly apply new lear ning in or der  to ensur e the success of students and teacher s during the Foundational Year  to demonstr ate their  r eadiness to do this as school leader s.

Decisions and actions are data-driven and always focused on driving student achievement.

Agency -Demonstrate agency and leadership by taking responsibility for your own goals, learning, and behavior. Avoid blamingothers.

REFLECTION & RESULTS-Orientation

The Foundational Year  r equir es constant r eflection.

A New Leader Resident must be willing to embr ace discomfor t and lear n how to manage him/her self thr ough it (e.g. confusion, f r ustr ation,

giving/r eceiving diff icult feedback)

³You ar e not an empty vessel´. So bring what you know AND be w illing to r e-think and expand your  thinking based on new infor mation in or der  tohave a positive impact on student achievement during the Residency and beyond.

TAKING Responsibility Together

³Bloom wher e you¶r e planted.´ Ther e is no per fect wor k context. This is your oppor tunity to pr actice your skills. Char ge your self with making itbetter and getting what you can out of it. Residents take r esponsibility for their  lear ning.

A New Leader Resident is surr ounded by r esour ces (e.g Coaches, faculty other New leader s) and he/she should lever age these r esour ces duringthe Foundational year by r egular ly: 1)seeking feedback f r om other s 2) pr acticing new ways of being and doing based on feedback; 3) asking for  help when needed and offering help when possible.

Residents ar e a par t of a national community committed to getting dr amatic gains for our students.
