In Memory of my Father In Memory of my Father

Hollywood, Modern Day - A self-proclaimed (so-mewhat justifiably) film legend bribes his son to document his death under the unquestioning assumption that it will be historically important. The Result … In Memory of My Father, a twisted celebration of a Hollywood family dealing with an inconvenient and frustrating day, regardless of the subtly distracting centerpiece which they can’t seem to completely ignore … Dad’s corpse. With the inappropriate wit of Curb Your Enthusi-asm, Christopher Jaymes steers us through Dad’s wake, alongside his two brothers and

Dad’s fickle twenty-something girlfriend. A fes-tival favorite and winner of multiple awards in-cluding Best Picture at CineVegas & Santa Bar-bara FF, it boasts a top-notch ensemble cast and a superb soundtrack by indie veterans Belle & Sebastian.

The Camera MurdererDer Kameramörder

Easter at Lake Neusiedl: Thomas has a desig-ner house hidden in the reeds on the Hungarian side of the lake. He and his new girlfriend Sonja invite another couple to visit: Heinrich, an old friend and notorious cynic and his wife Eva, who seems to have a more complicated past with Thomas than a simple long-lasting friendship. Small irritations even before the guests arrive suggest that the idyll is not to be trusted: The neighboring farmer visits briefly and informs them that his sisters’ three children went mis-sing without a trace. At the same time a snuff video surfaces and it seems it was recorded in immediate vicinity to the house. It shows three boys being tortured by an unidentified man. Pa-ranoia creeps in. Is the perpetrator in the house? A relationship battle unfolds where neither trust nor honest emotions seem safe, where eventu-ally only suspicions and a cruel game write the script.

At 19 years old, Niko is still a proper “mummy’s boy” and is desperate to experience his “first time”. When his parents go to a party out of town, he decides to make the most of being home alo-ne and invites the attractive Angelina to join him. But she doesn’t come on her own, and what’s more, Niko’s friend Luke plans to throw the party to end all parties at his house. He tries to avert the worst, but then someone else pulls “his” An-gelina. The initially unprepossessing Sophie, who turns out to have hidden depths, tries to dis-tract Niko, and suddenly he is caught between two women.

Just as the bash reaches its excessive highpoint and the kids from the entire neighbourhood are partying in the garden to music from an indie band, Niko’s parents burst in. The party is over, but next morning Niko has grown up. He wants to move out, and Sophie goes with him.

Molly & Mops – 100 Kilos of LoveMolly & Mops – 100 Kilo Liebe

Molly is somewhat rounder than the fashionistas, nutrition junkies and self-appointed judges of all that is beautiful, good and right will ever accept. Nevertheless, she has three main points in her favour – she knows who she wants to be, she knows what she wants to be and she has the energy to succeed. And on top of this, don’t for-get, she has Mops the dog, who speaks to her. When Molly faces a number of travails – such as being left by her boyfriend for another woman, moving from her small home town to the big city, and winding up stranded and alone in Salzburg after getting conned out of her money – her skill as a pastry chef, her willpower and, of course, Mops ultimately help save the day.

Molly & Mops – Café MopsMolly & Mops – Café Mops

Molly has opened a small café with a personal touch in Vienna, which, thanks to her imaginative creations, has soon gained an excellent reputati-on. Once again Mops the dog is her helpful assis-tant. Molly receives a visit from Valerie, the diet-mad manageress of the “Neon & Blau” café opposite, which attracts far fewer customers than “Café Mops”. Valerie is under huge pressure from her boss, Mrs. Rot, to do something to stop their flourishing competitor. A variety of different struggles develop between the “Neon & Blue” and “Café Mops”: mice hightail it through Molly’s kitchen, and a fire threatens the eatery. On top of this, Molly actually experiences her first great love, which leads to a surprising and unexpected end. Azra thinks that she is pregnant, whilst Mops actually is, and gives birth to three pups.

Johann Stanzerl feels hemmed in. Every other business unit in his Vienna neighbourhood is owned by a Turk. Only his beloved Café Prinz Eugen is still offering any resistance, with its re-gular, upstanding, Austrian clientele. To Johann’s surprise, his wife and him were not the only one’s extending their café. Mustafa, the Turkish business man was expanding his new restau-rant on the other side of the wall. Evidently the Count had sold the same premises twice. It could hardly be worse for Johann. The enemy is not just in his own building, he is now the landlord too. The Turkish neighbor must go, no matter what the cost.

When Otto plays – and he plays for money – he usually wins, and it doesn’t seem to do any harm to his fortunes in love. Women find him irresistible. Which is the root of a problem – or three problems, to be precise - that Otto cannot solve in his usual confident and laid back way.Otto is a loving father to his three children, Da-vid, Julia and Pius. Purely from a logistical point of view this is something of a challenge, since the three mothers are not supposed to know anything about one another.

Otto’s planning difficulties get worse when Ma-ria, the former jazz diva who helps him out loo-king after the kids, has to go into hospital for a knee operation. Just in time, Otto makes friends with Josef, a solitary fitter with a liking for astro-logy. Josef is the exact opposite of Otto. He loves order, and is punctual, conscientious and reliable; from Otto’s point of view the ideal stand-in for Maria. However, Josef has two pro-blems that concern Otto. First, he has no inte-rest in children, and second, where women are concerned, having been wounded once in love, he is afflicted by an almost pathological shy-

ness. Otto makes Josef an offer: if Josef will help Otto out with the kids, Otto will show him how life really should be lived.

However, this only works out for a short time. Whilst Josef makes the most of his new-found lust for life, Otto’s web of lies collapses: the children’s mothers get wise to him and take the kids away. Josef, who cannot stand idly by and watch his new friend’s downfall, goes on the of-fensive. Mobilising all of his new skills, he inter-venes with Otto’s women and helps his friend to make a new start as a father and friend in an honest and happy “patchwork family”. After all, family is what you make of it.

No Way OutKein Entkommen

A bus belonging to a cleaning company is attacked before the start of work. The driver, a student, is shot dead. Moritz Eisner and Bibi Fellner’s investi-gations point to it being “mistake” – the stand-in driver was killed instead of the usual man. He, however, is at home with flu, and is not left in peace for long. The killers appear at his house, but he is able to flee to the police and discloses that he is a Serbian refugee from the Kosovan war, has married in Austria and taken the name Müller, which is his wife’s name. The explosive detail is that he was a member of a paramilitary grouping that, as a hit squad, had massacred Bosnian Muslims. He, then Mirco Gradic, now Josef Müller, deserted, and has precise records of all the atrocities committed. He is able to identify members of the troop who are living incognito in Vienna, and above all the ringleaders.

One of these must have disappeared in Vienna and have discovered Müller‘s presence here, along with his true identity. The case develops into a piti-less battle with Serbian ultra-nationalists, which almost ends in an inferno. In this extreme situation, Moritz Eisner and Bibi Fellner have to prevail over not only uncompromisingly brutal opponents, but also the interests of Interpol, represented by two high-ranking officials, who, wherever necessary, are seeking to bring erstwhile war criminals before the tribunal in The Hague.

A naked man is found in a car park – lying in a shopping trolley with bullet holes in his knees and temple. It transpires that the victim is Bulga-rian, and was involved in a break-in at a jeweller’s shop. Is the murder part of a gang war? After con-tact is made with the Bulgarian authorities, a Bulgarian special investigator, Donka Galabova, travels to Vienna. Then a very similar burglary takes place in a car showroom. The crimes al-ways follow the same pattern. It seems as if the perpetrators come to Vienna for the night of the crime and then disappear again afterwards. Who is the Austrian middleman, who selects the tar-gets for break-in, and who disposes of the goods afterwards?

During their investigations, police inspector Eis-ner and his assistant, Bibi, repeatedly come up against a lawyer who represents the victims, and also against a probable fence who seems to be implicated in the case. As a second body, also found naked in a shopping trolley, is discovered, this time shot by a Bulgarian weapon, it becomes clear that a Bulgarian killer must be present in the city. Can the Austrian special investigation team and their Bulgarian colleague solve the case?

RetributionVergeltung

When Chief Inspector Moritz Eisner is called to a crime scene in the Vienna underground, he is horrified: once again the victim is a teenager who has been brutally executed. Everything points to the perpetrator being a serial killer. The victims themselves are all convicted violent criminals. However, none of them had been imprisoned as they were all too young when they committed their crimes. The only condition was that they seek professional help and attend therapy. Gruesomely, they have each now been killed in the same way as their own victims.

And if the case were not unsettling enough, to make matters worse Eisner has also been assigned a new assistant, who, however, is not unknown to him: Bibi Fellner, who is burnt out and teetering on the brink of alcoholism, yet somehow intensely human. All leads point to the “Youth Health” thera-py centre, which specialises in resocialising young violent criminals. To-gether with his assistant, who sees Eisner as her last chance, he sets out to search for the culprit …

Operation JobOperation Hiob

When the chief financial manager of the syndicate that controls the Austri-an heroin trade is found murdered, Moritz Eisner is sent on an undercover operation: “Operation Job”. With Eisner’s help, the undercover agent who has worked in the drug-syndicate for years is to be led to the head of the organization to bring him to justice. Initially, the plan seems to work. Eisner’s investigations expose a competing criminal organization that pu-shes heavily into drug trafficking and challenges the market-controlling syndicate. But while Eisner tries to prevent a war between the rival groups and protect the identity of the undercover agent, he gets himself ever deeper into a web of organized crime …

The CompetitionDer Wettbewerb

Life is good for Hubert Fischbach. His charming wife, Henni, is a wonderful mother to his children, Alina, 10, and Theo, 8. His career with an energy company is about to take off. The only thing that gives him any stress every now and again is his relatives. Whatever Hubert has achieved never has been and never will be good enough for his father, Hermann, a retired general who has al-ways preferred Hubert’s brother, Viktor. It all co-mes to a head during family visits; after all, the Fischbach brothers, Hubert and Viktor live side by side in two halves of the same semi-detached house. For the children’s sake, the Fischbachs take part in an eco-project. But the fun is soon over. The competition to have the smallest ecolo-gical footprint turns into a no-holds-barred battle between the neighbouring Fischbach brothers. A fast-paced family comedy with Harry Krassnitzer and Ann-Kathrin Kramer.

Fast ForwardSchnell ermittelt

Angelica Fast is in her mid-thirties, a divorced single mother – and a successful Investigator at Vienna’s criminal investigation department. The good-looking young woman handles the balan-cing act between her job and parental duties with humour. Even if her teenage twins keep her on her toes, she goes all out for the pursuit of criminals. That professional and private life isn’t always separable, is not least due to her ex-hus-band, the chief of forensics: Some teasing is part of the daily routine, and it may well happen, that childrearing is discussed on the crime scene. Sentimentality has no room in all this – Angelica Fast knows what she wants and always keeps the facts in sight.

Four Women and a FuneralVier Frauen und ein Todesfall

Julie, Maria, Sabine and Henriette – four remarkable women sharing an exceptional pastime – join forces in order to bring some excitement to the boring village life by suspecting murder in all those cases which initially seem to point to the opposite. Never failing to be present at any village funeral, they in-vestigate the deaths by unnatural cause in a highly unconventional way. In the second season of the series, Henriette helps out Julie with a friendly turn, indispensable to Julie’s life and as a consequence has to go to jail for quite some time. Mona, a young community doctor with investigative skills and medical expertise, joins the team. The peaceful life for the tenants of a Salzburg apartment complex is over when the landlord decides that he wants to get rid of them. To make the tenants’ time miserable, the owner puts a wicked janitor in charge of the building. That by itself would be a lot to deal with, but many of the resi-dents also have to fi ght their own personal problems: Take Sarah and Gustl for example, who are going through a divorce, just to end up living together after all. That is dictated not only by economic reasons but also by their love of their son James as well as their affection towards grandfather Willi. Or take a look at Anna, a single mother who has her hands full in co-ping with her pubescent daughter. Last but not least there is Turkish citizen Seyfi Ülbül, who lives in his car parked right outside the building falling in love with Sarah.

7 Wonders7 Wunder

“7 Wonders” presents wonders that are big and small, obviously spectacular, and hidden yet sensational. In this popular science magazine for children, Thomas Brezina and his assistant, „Nel-son”, go looking in their animated Wonder Ex-press, “Crazy Lola”, for things that appear to be wonders – be it the Dead Sea, in which Thomas reads a newspaper whilst swimming, the langua-ge of dolphins, with whom he also goes swim-ming, historical sensations that still astound us today and “do it yourself wonders” that show children how they too can create something ama-zing. There are things to wonder at everywhere, not only far away, but right around the corner. Some are tiny, others gigantic, but they all have one thing in common: they astonish us!

The international nature of this format is under-lined by the fact that the films were shot not only in Austria, but in England, Iceland and Jordan among other places, enabling wonders from all over the world to be presented close at hand.

Built in the Name of ArtBauten für die Künste

In no other province have as many cultural buildings been erected in the last two decades as in Lower Austria. The documentary Building for the Arts presents a few outstanding examples of this cultural development. Starting with St. Pölten’s cultural district and the “Art Mile” in Krems, we show how contemporary architecture has uniformly established itself – from the revi-talization of historic sites, including monasteries and castles, to the const-ruction of sensational new buildings. The viewer will be led through the broad spectrum of exceptional building culture in Lower Austria, a culture which provides art, theater and music with the plentiful and spectacular stages it deserves.

Eyewitness to History – Vienna’s St. Stephen’s CathedralDer steinerne Zeuge – St. Stephan: Ein Dom erzählt Geschichte

The Cathedral, the emblem of Vienna, tells a story. After 374 years of cons-truction, it has only officially been a cathedral for 43 years. This cinematic investigation passes from the legend of the Eberhardslinde via the remar-kable barter contract of Mautern and the dominant role of Passau in Vienna, to the well-financed citizens’ church and the ‘Wiener Bauhütte’ (Viennese Workshop), which was of European significance, and which actually for the most part did not build cathedrals in the sense of the seat of a Bishop. Secrets, legends and special features of Vienna‘s cathedral as well as hid-den number games in the structure are revealed in this documentary and show both its origins and its future.

Hans Makart – The King of ViennaHans Makart – Der König von Wien

The name Hans Makart is symbolic not only of gigantic canvases painted in dramatic colours, but also of an excessive cult of celebrity and the brilliance of an entire era, between 1869 and 1884, to which the painter gave his name. Above and beyond painting, as a universal designer, Hans Makart also had an influence on opera and theatre, home décor and fashions in clothing. In the 1870s he triggered a Makart fashion in Vienna, was an aes-thetic role model and was a source of ideas for many of the achievements of Vienna’s “Ringstrasse” period. With the help of psychoanalyst, Stephan Engelhardt, and the museum director, Wolfgang Kos, this documentary ex-amines the “Makart myth” and the impact that the artist, who died at a young age in 1884, has had right up to the present day.

Beirut Art SceneKunstszene Beirut

Beirut, which is often described as the “Paris of the Middle East”, has been marked by decades of civil war and other armed combat. From an architec-tural as well as from a social, economic and historical perspective, the city has become a battlefield of divergent interests that often end in conflict. Today 17 different religions still call the urban area home, which, depending on the political position, can be a blessing or a curse. Rivalries between clans and denominations, feudal thinking, hierarchies and allegiances to family clans determine the socio-economic and political stratification and social interactions in the country. This is also true for the players on the cultural scene, who, however, also find a source of inspiration in this com-plexity.

Ballet in White – The Spanish Riding SchoolDas weiße Ballett – Die spanische Hofreitschule

Styria: on a cold January night, a mousy-grey colt is welcomed into the world. It takes its fi rst steps, drinks around 20 litres of mare’s milk every day, gets to know people and other foals and spends wonderful summers in Alpine meadows with the herd, growing stronger and more sure-footed with time. The difference between it and other, “ordinary” horses is that at three and a half years old, it will become clear whether or not the young stallion is suitable for continuing a 430-year-old tradition. It is at this stage that it will become apparent whether or not it will move to Vienna, to be-come - after a further six years of training - a world-wide star, a Lipizzaner at the Spanish Riding School.

How Franz became LISZTWie aus Franz LISZT wurde

How did a village boy become the Franz Liszt? The childhood of Franz Liszt in Austria’s Burgenland region is the focal point of this episode of “Stories from Austria”. The fi lm examines the key locations of his childhood as they are now and discovers an amazing continuity of artisanry, agriculture and music. This makes it easy to obtain a sense through the fi lm of an attitude to life that cannot be so very far away from the impressions formed by the young Franz Liszt. It offers a glimpse of the beauties of his small world through a child’s eyes: the land is vast, the castle is home to a prince, the music is played by gypsies and their wives foretell the future. Every brush-maker is a wizard, every animal a friend, every sound an enticement. But above all this is a musical fi lm. At the heart of it is the eleven-year-old pro-digy, Oskar Weihs. Among other things, he plays excerpts from the piano works of Ferdinand Ries, Joseph Haydn, Johann Sebastian Bach and in a very special setting, Franz Liszt‘s fi rst composition. Added to this are gypsy music by Janoska and Ciganski Diabli and from Mosa Sisic, excerpts from Haydn’s ‘Stabat Mater’, performed in Esterhazy Palace, and time and again, Franz Liszt. A fi lm to listen to, watch and marvel at – HOW FRANZ BECAME LISZT!

Ötzi – An Archaeological Detective StoryÖtzi – Ein Archäologie-Krimi

It was a bright autumn day on 19th September 1991 when Mr & Mrs Simon discovered a body on the Similaun glacier. It wasn’t an isolated case that year. Storms had brought the finest Saharan sand to the Alps – and this, combined with the summer sun, caused the glaciers to begin to melt. In Tyrol alone the eternal ice gave up 6 bodies, including tourists and mountaineers. The sixth body turned out to be Ötzi, who had died 5300 years ago during the Neolithic period also known as New Stone Age. He is the oldest preserved mummy in the world – even older than the Egyp-tian kings. His discovery opened a new door into the past. A scientific sensation and the oldest known criminal case in history – a case that is yet to be solved.

Zweigelt – A Wine with a TwistDer Zweigelt – Ein vielseitiger Österreicher

An Austrian wine innovator whose roots can be traced deep into National Socialism. In 1922, in Klos-terneuburg near Vienna, Friedrich Zweigelt crossed the St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch varieties of gra-pe. The result was the “Zweigelt”, Austria’s “national red”, which has been described by the initiated as follows: “at first glance everything is normal and lovely, but then an abyss opens up.” The same could be said to apply to the variety’s creator. Zweigelt was a Nazi party member from the word go and, as director of the Institute of Viticulture during Hitler’s dictatorship, persecuted anyone who raised even the slightest suspicion of resistance, excluded Jews from his courses, and even after 1945 showed no remorse. This film by Gerald Teufel illuminates the unknown past of a highly decorated wine connoisseur and shows the real stories that may lie behind some of Austria’s national treasures.

“Striving for Success” tells the extraordinary stories of Austrian sporting greats who have enjoyed worldwide success, such as Niki Lauda, Thomas Muster, Hermann Maier, Heinz Kinigadner and Thomas Geierspichler, as well as the significant events that have taken place in the lives of Princess Dr. Therese von Schwarzenberg and the son of Heinz Kinigadner. In highly personal interviews, these sports-people describe their experience of serious accidents, the associated convalescence and seemingly indomitable will to once again fight their way to the top of the world. In this way Lauda, Muster and Maier have all become legends that are immortal in the public’s imagination.

Silent Valley – Nature Trails to Lake HubertusDas stille Tal – Naturpfade zum Hubertussee

Close to the border between Lower Austria and Styria is a region that is among the most peaceful and unspoilt landscapes there are: the nature reserve along the Walstern, which is home to extensive hunting and fishing grounds. Like an amethyst, Lake Hubertus sparkles out from a sea of trees between Annaberg, Ulreichsberg, St. Aegyd and Mariazell. Today, the per-petually clear mountain lake, where Kaiser Franz Josef once hunted, is a paradise for water birds and fish. Visually stunning pictures of animal life and unspoilt nature illustrate a journey through and examination of every season in this peaceful valley.

The Amber Road – From the Danube to the AdriaticDie Bernsteinstraße – Von der Donau zur Adria

It is red and burns, is called a stone, but is really a resin. Many secrets sur-round this fossilised pine tree resin, which has been coveted as a gem since time immemorial. Amber. In olden days its magical charm lay primarily in its sumptuous reddish colouring and its transparency. Samples that feature what are known as “inclusions” – insects that were trapped and preserved in the resin – also give rise to much fascination. Beetles, lice and grasshop-pers provide scientists with clues as to the nature of the flora and fauna of bygone ages. This film follows the road and river connections southwards. It lingers a while in those places that were important in times gone by and in individual areas which today, in a united Europe, are again returning to prominence through cross-border projects initiated by the EU.

The Ice Cream Makers’ WinterDer Winter der Eismacher

For generations, like swallows, they have migra-ted north in spring to their family businesses, which have names like Dolomiti, San Marco or Riva, and returned south again in winter, home to their Italian villages in the Val di Zoldo. The cere-mony with which the Italian ice cream makers reopen their parlours after the winter season might well be different in Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Hungary or Austria. As well as the recipes, ingredients and flavours of ice cream may differ from town to town, from country to country. But one thing unites the Itali-an ice cream makers who run their ice cream par-lours north of the Alps: the majority of them come from the Val di Zoldo, a narrow, pictu-resque valley in the Dolomites.

For centuries local Indios have been climbing up South America´s highest volcano, the Chimbora-zo in Ecuador, to pick ice from the glaciers and sell it to the markets in Riobamba and other villa-ges at the foot of this majestic mountain. Baltha-zar Ushka, 68, is the last iceman, the „ultimo hielero“, to walk up to the ice mine, 4800 meters above sea level, twice a week with his donkeys and carve out ice blocks. The people in the nu-merous towns, villages and settlements surroun-ding the volcanos – the Altar, the Pichincha or the Tungurahua – have learned to live with the threat and danger as they have profited from the advan-tages of the enormous frutility provided by volca-no activity. The film portraits Balthazar, who lives in a small village named Cuarto Esquinas with his wife, daughters and grandchildren.

It’s sheer pleasure to watch him preparing his meals – without a word. One can just lean back, relax, and watch a culinary work of art unfold – the transformation of healthy raw in-gredients into artistic meals, accompanied by background music instead of chat. Important details and information are inserted in subtitles so the vie-wers can concentrate on what’s essential: the cook ing. In each episode, Patrick Mueller prepares a three-course menu. All recipes spring from his creative mind and are usually only finalized while he is cooking before our eyes. Every ingredient and procedure is clearly labeled for the audience in easily readable subtitles that quietly focus on the essential, yet provide all information hobby chefs require.

The relationship between art and science has al-ways been multifarious and today, in the age of technoscience, has become decidedly ambi-guous. Between the mechanisation of living things in biological science and the “bringing to life” of machines within the exploration of artifi-cial life, the protagonists of transgenic art and artificial life art have dared to adopt the methods and procedures of life sciences, creating new art forms in the process. Life on a VolcanoLeben auf dem Vulkan

In the wake of the international financial crisis, Iceland was the first European country to teeter on the brink of national insolvency at the end of 2008. The country’s three largest banks col-lapsed, and the government was brought down by the people’s “cooking pot revolution”. In the meantime, the economy has started to grow again, and the International Monetary Fund at-tests to Iceland’s remarkable progress. The country owes its comeback not only to financial help from other countries, but also to a rigorous programme of savings. The political system has been renewed by unconventional means. Ordina-ry citizens are tasked with giving the country a new constitution and in the capital city, Reykja-vik, a humour-based party is in charge. The dis-pute over the repayment of billions-worth of Bri-tish and Dutch savings deposits may not yet be over, but the people are again looking to the fu-ture with confidence.

Living in a Selfish World?Vom Sinn des Gebens

For decades economists have portrayed man-kind as a species that seeks only its own advan-tage and profit in a coolly calculating manner.

“Struggling for Life” – many economists view the global markets and their mechanisms in ac-cordance with this image to the present day. People chase individual success with all their might – even at the expense of their neighbours.

Yet recently scientists from various different dis-ciplines have begun to question this view of things. The financial crisis gave a special urgency to their work, and in the meantime, neuroscien-tists, evolutionary researchers and economists have turned the old, pseudo-Darwinist picture of mankind on its head. They are coming to the con-clusion that through his tribal history, mankind is characterised by mutual support, readiness to help and teamwork.

Worlds Apart – Easter in GreeceOsterfeiern am Peloponnes

Monemvasia on the southern Peloponnes in Lako-nia is considered to be one of the most reflective places in which to celebrate Easter. The historic lustre of the medieval town takes on a new com-plexion. The car-free fortress town is synonymous with the mystically intense experience of the death and resurrection of Christ. On the other side of the Parnon mountain ridge, Easter is celebrated quite differently. In Leonidio, the capital of Arcadia, the resurrection is positively bombed into being. Since time immemorial the male population has bom-barded the small town, which lies between two rock faces, with home-made dynamite bombs. Even during the celebration of the resurrection on Easter Saturday, the detonations drown out the entire liturgy. This documentary shuttles between the two contrasting poles of Leonidio and Monem-vasia in order to capture the meaning of Easter in both the orthodox faith and everyday life. In times of crisis in particular, the festival of the resurrec-tion takes on an even greater symbolic importance.

The AdmirersDie Verehrer

For many believers, John Paul II was already a saint in his lifetime. Thanks to his charisma he was able to return many people to the fold of the Roman Catholic Church – and even encouraged numerous others to enter into the monastic life.

For the documentary, “The Admirers”, Peter Beringer visited believers in Austria for whom John Paul II is already undoubtedly a saint – believers who worship him unconditionally and who feel they have found an intercessor in the Polish Pope. The documentary also critically illuminates the impact of the former Pontifex Maximus, the ecclesiastical practice of beatification in general and the speed of this beatification process in particular.

Bodyguard und Brevier – Don Erwin KräutlerBodyguard und Brevier – Mit Bischof Kräutler am Amazonas

When Erwin Kräutler became Bishop of Altamira in the Amazon, his colleagues advised him that he would be expected to wear the insignia of Epi-scopal power, the mitre, ring and bishop‘s gown. But the bishop from the Austrian province of Vor-arlberg decided not to set himself apart from his fellow men and exchanged his “hat” for simple jeans and t-shirts. However, not everyone appre-ciates his approach. The fact that he advocates the rights of the indigenous people and cam-paigns against the destruction of the Amazon region is a thorn in some people‘s sides. Erwin Kräutler’s commitment has seen him arrested, tortured and threatened with death on several occasions. Nevertheless, his support for the indi-genous people was recognised on 6th December 2010 with an alternative Nobel prize. This docu-mentary accompanies the Bishop on a pastoral visit to the furthest-flung corner of Brazil.

Dining with Religion – Pork?Armes Schwein

In the run up to New Year everything revolves around the beloved pig. The different religions have differing approaches to the pig. For some it is an absolute taboo, whilst for others, pork is the main source of nutrition, and in some regions is even consecrated (meat blessing). What are the origins of the strict prohibitions concerning this animal, which, for us, is even a symbol of good luck? How strictly are the Islamic and Je-wish prohibitions still followed, are there excep-tions, and why, for example, does the pig even trigger religious confl icts in Egypt? Finally, what underlying ethical attitudes towards this animal are rooted in the religions?

The World in a BallDer Ball ist rund

This documentary shows the very contradictory consequences of globalization in a single, remo-te setting: in the secret world capital of soccer in northeast Pakistan, Sialkot. According to a Paki-stani legend, the ball is not only round, but also a „Golden Ball,“ a „Gola Zareen.“ In Sialkot, 50,000 workers sew about forty million handma-de balls per year. That‘s seventy percent of the hand-stitched soccer balls on the world market. It takes about three hours to fi nish a ball. The business, which began more than 100 years ago with the manufacture of balls, hockey sticks, and cricket bats for their British colonial masters, kept booming for decades and is economically important for all Pakistan. Now burgeoning com-petition is posing a threat: el cheapo balls from China are becoming better and better, and high-tech products from Thailand are becoming chea-per and cheaper.

Miracle Healer or Charlatan?Wunderheiler oder Scharlatan?

What if the greatest healer of all time were to re-turn? A possible answer to this question is provi-ded by the case of Bruno Groening. Germany 1949: “There is nothing that is incurable. God is the greatest physician!” This was the bold claim of the son of a simple bricklayer from Gdansk. He was neither a doctor nor a healer, and had under-taken no course of study, and yet every day thousands of people came to him. “It’s beyond belief! He heals the lame, the blind and the deaf!” read the headline in the Suedeutsche Sonntags-post newspaper. Elsewhere people spoke of the

“Bavarian Lourdes”. Even the newsreels reported on it. Practically overnight, Groening was hyped by the media as the “new Messiah”. Naturally this was a provocation for the church. Doctors and the authorities felt forced to react. And so Groening was forbidden from healing and forced to appear in court. So, was he a charlatan after all? A media witch hunt began.

Country No. 1Country No. 1

10 years after 9/11 „Country No.1“ takes on a travel back in time to the fall of 2001 when official his-tory was not yet written. Shortly after September 11th I traveled to a New York that was under world-wide surveillance. My impulse was to contrast the omnipresent TV-imagery and its attempt to incor-porate the event into an official narrative. I was looking for images of every-day-life, which continued in the shadow of the spectacular incident. I wanted to witness how „simple“ New Yorkers were impac-ted and how they tried to create their own narratives in order to deal with the event individually. By combining their stories with uncommented images of the work at ground zero and the beginning of a remembrance culture, I tried to relate different aspects of the „history-in-the-making“-process and raise the question of what could become. So in the review „Country No.1“ is a time travel to a point where it wasn‘t yet decided what had to happen and thus allows the reflection on whether or why history became what it is today.

Music at the SeaMusik und Meer

A magical Spot for the MusicEin magischer Platz für die Musik

In the year 2001 the acclaimed violin virtuoso Ju-lian Rachlin founded a festival of chamber music in Dubrovnik. He introduced a new and success-ful concept of gathering some of the most fa-mous world musicians and letting them play the music that they personally enjoy. In 2008 the Austrian filmmaker Georg Riha joined the festival to cinematically accompany the star violinist: Masterly, as usual, and in the highest aesthetics as well as in technical quality, he succeeded with this film composition to tape the magical atmos-phere of the city at the sea and the relaxed artis-tic work of Julian Rachlin and his friends. See the Rector’s Palace, rehearsals, the sea, conversa-tions, sun and wind, concerts and a lot of fun.

The evening was rounded off with a cabaret performance with the Austrian cabaret artist Josef Hader.

The friendly relationship between Austria and Ja-pan is not only based on cultural, political and economic relations, but is also significantly influ-enced by the exchange of either’s love for classi-cal music. Much of the classical music which ori-ginated in Western Europe, in particular in Austria, has travelled across the globe and been performed and taught in Japan. In exchange, Ja-panese music lovers and students often travel to Austria as tourists and some even decide to make Austria their new home.
