Newsletter 4 – 12 th April Term 1, 2019 Principal's Message Dear Parents Thank you all for the support you have given the school in Term 1. We have had a very busy and successful term of learning and data collected is showing positive improvement, especially in Literacy and Numeracy across all year levels. Congratulations to the P&C for the outstanding work of the Committee to have the canteen up and running; for the development of the Concept Plan for the new Nature Playground; and the fun and focus to raise funds with the Easter Parade and Raffle this week. The $3500 raised was a wonderful result! Our Student Councillors have made a terrific contribution to our school community in their leadership positions. They are very positive, have a strong moral purpose and are genuinely working to make a difference. Mia Walter and Isaac Francis have been selected as Head Girl and Head Boy for 2019 and we offer our congratulations to Mia and Isaac and look forward to supporting them in their very responsible leadership positions. Our ANZAC Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday 1 May (Week 1, Term 2) at 11am. Term 1, 2019

Principal's Message

Dear Parents

Thank you all for the support you have given the school in Term

1. We have had a very busy and successful term of learning and

data collected is showing positive improvement, especially in

Literacy and Numeracy across all year levels.

Congratulations to the P&C for the outstanding work of the

Committee to have the canteen up and running; for the

development of the Concept Plan for the new Nature

Playground; and the fun and focus to raise funds with the

Easter Parade and Raffle this week. The $3500 raised was a

wonderful result!

Our Student Councillors have made a terrific contribution to our school community in their leadership

positions. They are very positive, have a strong moral purpose and are genuinely working to make a

difference. Mia Walter and Isaac Francis have been selected as Head Girl and Head Boy for 2019 and we

offer our congratulations to Mia and Isaac and look forward to supporting them in their very responsible

leadership positions.

Our ANZAC Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday 1 May (Week 1, Term 2) at 11am. The Esperance

Lighthorse Troop will be our guests and we are delighted that the Troop will put on a display of

horsemanship in honour of the men and horses that fought for Australia in past conflicts. Everyone is most

welcome to attend.

Please enjoy a well-earned holiday with your families and we look forward to seeing everybody back at

school, safe and sound, on Tuesday 30 April 2019.

Deputy's Desk - Curriculum

NAPLAN Online Practice Tests: This week we have been participating in NAPLAN Online Practice Tests with our Year 3 and Year 5 students. A generic test was administered to each year level which allows students to practise logging on with their own unique code, answer a variety of different style questions and practise navigating around the assessment website. It also allowed our teachers to learn how to use the dashboard that they will use during the real assessments next term. We were able to learn what to do if students need a toilet break, have a technical issue or become ill. The NAPLAN Online Tests will occur in Weeks 3 and 4 of next term.

Resilience Survey: Our Year 3-6 students participated in the anonymous Resilient Youth Resilience Survey this week. As our students completed this survey last year as well, it will be able to provide us with valuable data that we can then use to determine the success of Health and Wellbeing Programs currently being used and determine if changes to these programs needs to occur. It will also help us identify any priority areas of need for our students as a whole school or year level cohort.

Easy Mark Maths Assessment: This week, teachers began analysing the results of the Easy Mark Maths Assessment, identifying and grouping students according to need. They were able to determine areas of strength and challenges in the maths curriculum for their classroom based upon the results. From this information they have started identifying differentiated teaching foci for each group in their classroom for next term. This information will now be aggregated and whole school and Phase of Learning Team targets determined for the remainder of 2019.

Promoting Literacy Development: Last week, all students from Year 1-6 participated in the End of Term 1 Review Assessment from PLD. Kindergarten and Pre-Primary Students have had their own PLD assessments as well. Our school target is to see 25% growth from students each term. It has been rewarding to see that the majority of our students have been able to demonstrate this growth and in some cases, even more. This information was shared with the School Board at their meeting last Wednesday. Teachers are using this data to inform their planning for improvement in Term 2.

Formal School Reports: This year we will be sending our school reports out via email. It is extremely important that if you have changed your email address that you notify the school with your new email address as soon as possible as most of our communication with parents is via email. Parents who do not have an email address will be provided with a paper copy.

Whole School Assembly - 12th April

Room 21 led a well-polished, clearly articulated assembly today with students speaking in rhyme to introduce the different elements of the assembly.

The chorale speaking of the students was outstanding and their sharing of poetry written by various students in the class regarding natural disasters demonstrated a clear understanding of what they have learnt in their HASS lessons and being able to express this understanding in an appropriate, empathetic manner. Well done Room 21.

Interschool Athletics Carnival

After a huge first term of carnivals and athletics training, we came back from the Interschool carnival with the Meritorious Shield and a handful of ribbons and medals. Every student who attended the carnival at Nulsen Primary showed tremendous sportsmanship, determination and a great sense of teamwork and school spirit.

A big shout out to Ben Gibson for getting champion boy and Isla Powell, Lylah Heather and Ben Kloeden for their runner up medals. A mighty achievement and something that that you will be proud of for years to come.

Have a great school holidays and good luck to all the students who are starting their Netball and Football seasons.

One of our school parents, Kelsey Browning has written a story about her daughter Lotte, called Our Little Sister Lotte and her Special Ears and this was the prize for our winners. The winners of the Colouring-In Competition were Emersyn Unwin (Kindy), Amelia Hooper (Year 2), Remy Schmidt (Year 3) and Allira Bratten (Year 5).

Lloyd Henderson and Ben Gibson

Colour Your World: Our names are Lylah and Emily and we are excited to be given the responsibility to plan and organise the Colour Your World Day early next Term – 8th May. Our efforts are about raising funds to meet our $2000 RIBIT resources target. Everyone in our School Community is being encouraged to wear whatever you like that has lots of loud and bright colour. We want you to use your imagination, be “out there” and get creative! It is a gold coin donation event and an excuse to Colour Your World. For more information - click here. See you there!
