COORDINATING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

THE GIFT OF FAMILY The Australian Catholic Bishops have recently released a social justice statement for 2012-13 which emphasises the pivotal role of families in our society. They urge all Australians to consider the pressures and challenges facing families today. The Bishops remind us that the family is:

• The basis of our faith community; • The very foundation of society; and • A beacon for a more compassionate and just society.

Our modern families are under pressure. Most rely on two incomes to meet their financial commitments. A significant number of parents do not have full time work or need to live apart to find work. In the last decade housing affordability has worsened, with the average household spending 30% of their weekly income on rent or mortgage payments. The Bishops proposed three challenges for the benefit of all families, especially those who are struggling:

1) They urge us to rediscover the importance of the Sabbath – the time of rest, peace and prayer that resists the forces that pull families apart and deny them time together;

2) They call on us to show special concern for the poor, looking out for families in crisis; and 3) They call on us to share the love of God, participating in and sharing the gift of Eucharist.

For further information about the Social Justice statement refer to the website www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au HSC EXAMINATIONS A total of 343 Year 12 students from St Agnes’ Parish Secondary Schools will be commencing their HSC examinations on Monday, 15th October with the first of two English papers starting at 1.50pm. The breakdown in numbers of students commencing the HSC from our parish schools is as follows: MacKillop Senior College 133 Newman Senior Technical College 125 St Joseph’s Regional College 85 The exams extend over four weeks finishing on Thursday, 8th November for students doing Design and Technology and Visual Arts. Students, family members and staff will come together at Panthers Auditorium for graduation dinners on Saturday, 10th November for Newman Senior Technical College, Friday, 16th November for MacKillop Senior College and Saturday, 17th November for St Joseph’s Regional College. I am confident that our students will again perform well in 2012 having worked hard over the past two years with the support of a very dedicated team of teachers.

HSC results will be available to students and to principals on Wednesday, 19th December, 2012. Students will be able to access their Australian Tertiary Entrance Rank (ATAR) the following day. Our best wishes to all our HSC students. Mr Jim O’Brien Coordinating Principal

STUDENT LEADERSHIP AT ST JOSEPH'S REGIONAL COLLEGE At the Year 12 Major Award Prize-giving we announced our College student leaders to the assembly. I would like to congratulate our College leaders for 2012 – 2013

Andrew Newbound Ashleigh Hales I am extremely confident that these two young adults will be outstanding leaders of St Joseph's Regional College and I wish them all the very best in their role. I would like parents to take time to read our student leadership policy and I am more than happy for any feedback from students or parents. At present we are in the process of elections and I am sure that parents would be interested in this information. STUDENT LEADERSHIP POLICY COLLEGE CAPTAINS, HOUSE PREFECTS AND STUDENT REPRES ENTATIVE COUNCIL

RATIONALE: Our College is a partnership between staff, parents, students, parish and the community. Student input into formal decision-making is integral to our mutual success. A formal and structured Student Leadership Council will provide a forum for students to express their views and to have them heard. AIM To provide a formal and recognised process to effectively and fairly gather and express students’ opinions, suggestions and recommendations regarding relevant school issues and in doing so:

• Enhance cooperation within the school and encourage school spirit.

• Have student representation actively working with their peers so that the thoughts and

ideas they bring to council reflect the student body rather than their personal views only.

• Follow up ideas with actions.

• Create a more enjoyable atmosphere at school.

• Provide responsible leadership of the student body.

• Be available to attend all functions both within and outside of school hours eg. Anzac March, Parish morning tea.

• When occasion arises Captains and/or House Prefects will report/liaise/discuss issues that need to be addressed with Principal/College Leadership Team/Staff.

CODE OF CONDUCT The Code of Conduct has been constructed to ensure that the integrity of the council is upheld. The following rules have been formulated by the Student Council. • Councillors will always abide by the school rules. • Councillors will cooperate with teachers and other students. • Councillors will show respect to students and staff and respect to school and others’

property. • Councillors will not use their position of responsibility to bully or intimidate other students.

In cases where this occurs the normal process of student monitoring and discipline will take place.

• Councillors who consistently break rules will be asked to appear before a board consisting of College captains and staff members to explain why they should not resign from their current position.

• On decisions made by the council, majority rules across all year groups. • Council members respect and abide by any decisions made by the council.

IMPLEMENTATION OF COLLEGE CAPTAINS

• Nominations for College Captains take place in middle of Term 3 (week 5). • Successful nominees are posted at a morning briefing for staff comment. • Successful nominees are informed, compile a resume and present for an interview with

the Principal. • After speech has been shown to Year Coordinator and Pastoral Care teacher then

nominees present speech to whole school assembly. • After speeches whole school votes. • College Captains announced after consultation with College Leadership Team. • These are announced first so unsuccessful applicants can nominate for House Prefect. • New College Captains announced at Year 12 Major Award Assembly.

IMPLEMENTATION OF HOUSE PREFECTS

• Nominations for House Prefects take place in House Assemblies.(week 1 term 4) • Successful nominees discussed with House teachers for comment. • Successful nominees informed and prepare speech to present to House after presenting

speech to House Coordinator and Pastoral Care teacher. • Nominees present speech to the House and House votes straight after speeches. • House Prefects announced at Year 11 Academic Award Assembly.

IMPLEMENTATION OF SRC

• Nominees for SRC taken for Years 7, 8, 9,10 in Year Group meeting in term 4 • Successful nominees discussed with Leadership Team and House Coordinators. • Successful nominees informed and prepare speech to present to SRC Coordinator, House

Coordinator and Pastoral Care teacher aligned with that Year Group. • Successful nominees present speech to Year Group and voting takes place straight after

speeches. • SRC Representatives for Yr 8, 9, 10 & 11 announced at term 4 award assemblies.

AFTER ELECTION • Elected members will be recognised in the newsletter and will receive directions as to their

role and basic procedures and protocols. • Elected members will receive badges at the Inaugural Mass in the following year.

• All SRC representatives will take part in a leadership training day, where the group will identify goals for the ensuing year.

• SRC meetings will be held during a lunchtime at school.

EVALUATION The SRC coordinator is responsible for the day to day coordination of the SRC, ensuring meetings are professionally conducted and acted upon. Any amendments to this policy will be reviewed in consultation with all members of the SRC, the SRC Coordinator, Pastoral Coordinators and the Principal. Mr Daniel O’Mullane is the SRC coordinator who works with our current student leaders and I take this opportunity to thank him for all his work in this area. DANCE EISTEDDFOD

On the last Thursday night of Term 3 two dance groups competed at the Port Macquarie dance Eisteddfod. The ‘A’ group received 3rd place, and the ‘B’ group 4th place. This was a fantastic achievement, congratulations to the girls listed below. A special mention must be made to Ashley Sands (Year 12 Newman Senior Technical College) for her tireless effort travelling over once a week at lunch, and Sharon Waldow for the creative costumes which she voluntarily made. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS DANCE FESTIVAL

The catholic schools of Port Macquarie are putting on a dance festival at St Paul’s High School on Thursday 25th October. Doors will open at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start. Entrance fee will be a gold coin donation. Come along and enjoy a night of dance!

YEAR 8 2013 SKILLS ELECTIVES

Next year, Year 8 will have the opportunity to develop their skills in TWO of the following elective areas. Courses offered are semester courses where students study one elective for six months each. The purpose of the elective program is to give students a taste before choosing Year 9 electives which they study for two years. These Electives DO NOT replace Year 8 Technology classes. Students and parents are advised to carefully read the outline of course content below before making decisions. Choices should be made according to interests and abilities. Do not make decisions based on future careers.

Enterprise - Develop your knowledge and skills of the commercial world - money, business, banking and government. Drama - Develop your skills and confidence in performing, speaking and listening. Learn characterisation techniques and become anyone you want to be. French - Do you enjoy travel, exotic destinations, meeting interesting people? This course is a must for future world travellers. Deepen your understanding of French culture. Food Technology - Develop your skills in the selection, preparation, presentation and marketing of food products. Textiles & Design - Develop your skills in the design and manufacturing of fashion articles. Technical Skills - Develop your skills in the area of technical drawing, wood and metal technics.

UNIFORM DONATIONS

With Year 12 students leaving after their HSC exams we would like to ask families of Senior students to donate any unwanted uniform items. All donations are greatly appreciated.

YEAR 9 AND 10 COMMERCE

As part of their study on running a business students are organising their own retail businesses to compete against each other next Thursday 18th October during lunchtime. Commerce students are involved in a large range of business issues including finance, costing, advertising, marketing and sales. Students are also being taxed and the money raised will subsidise a future commerce excursion. Look out for advertisements regarding their food and drink products, costs and points of sale.

IMMUNISATION DAY

Our final School Immunisation Clinic is scheduled for Thursday 18th October 2012. No paperwork is required for these vaccinations. This clinic will be doing the following vaccinations: Year 7 – Female Students only - 3rd Dose Gardasil (HPV Pink) – also any catch ups of students who missed dose 1 & 2 Year 7 - All Students - 2nd Dose Hepatitis B (Green) - no dose 1 will be given in term 4 Year 7 - Varicella (Chicken Pox – Yellow) – any catch ups from Term 2 Year 7 & 10 – Boostrix (Blue) – any catch ups from Term 1 & 2 Students who are absent next Thursday will need to phone Community Health (Ph: 6588 2882) to arrange an alternative time to have their vaccinations.

PC FOOTY TIPPING RESULTS

Congratulations to PC O5 who finished first (same number of points as F1 but a better margin total) - they receive their name on the trophy, an out of uniform day and a pizza lunch. This tops off a great year for O5 who also took out the PC Touch Footy Comp. Final ladder on the website.

NSWCCC ATHLETICS REPORT

The Lismore Diocese recently took around one hundred students to Homebush to compete in the NSWCCC Athletics Carnival. Fifteen students from Regional attended and all of them performed admirably. There were four school records broken on the day and one new record set. A full list of results is below.
