When related to our community papers, buying local means supporting purchasing of advertisements and subscriptions. According to the Mile High Business Alliance, “by nurturing our local economy, we not only support the prosperity of local business, but build the kind of community we want to live in.” Couldn’t agree more. Local businesses support our economy by employing residents, paying taxes, improving infrastructure and protecting the environment. When local residents make purchases without regard to product or supplier provenance, that collective mindset undermines our community’s vibrancy. This isn’t some kind of paranoid, protectionist stance. Rather, it’s a statement about how the simplest of daily actions can make a positive difference for our entrepreneurial sector. As a consumer, I was faced with this issue head on. After the recent hail storm we were inundated with out-of-state companies aggressively selling roofing services door-to-door. Of course while many such companies are reputable, fraud is rampant. How can you help? All it takes is a shift in thinking. Next time you are shopping for a service provider, take time to clarify the company’s origin and ask for local references. It’s about local everything! Not just shopping and dining but services as well. Vehicles, Mechanics, HVAC, Contractors, Hair and Nail Salons, Electrical, Furniture, all fill a need in our community right here where we live. ANNUAL CHAMBER GOLF

OUTING

On behalf of the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Committee, we sincerely thank you for the support and sponsorships provided to the 2017 Chamber Annual Golf Outing held on Friday, May 19th. Despite the weather it was an overall success with over 108 participants that enjoyed fun contests, great prizes, and networking! None of this could be successfully accomplished without our remarkable committee, sponsors and participants who continue to join us each year. You have made it possible for the chamber to provide assistance to our businesses and quality of life events for the community.

Save the date for Friday, May 18th 2018 for next year’s outing!

As we work toward finding a retail replacement for JCPenney it is important for us to stay abreast of the latest trends. Recently, I reviewed a webinar from “Retail Strategies” on apparel and would like to share some of the information from that webinar.

Currently the buzz is all about two things: Millenials and E-Commerce. Millenials are changing the way they shop and retailers not only have to adapt to this, but if they want to ensure millennials stay with them it is an absolute must! Millenials are into value and into luxury. When retailers are dealing with e-commerce they should make it attractive to get their customers into the bricks and mortar store to do exchanges.

Most department store closures are happening when they have average prices and an average product. There is definitely a shift in real estate. Some of the retailers that are currently growing may take on retailers that are closing their larger real estate. For example, Stage Stores may be a retailer that would take on Gordman’s. Larger department stores like Macy’s are closing, but they are opening up several of their small stores called Blue Mercury. Nordstrom is closing stores, but they are opening their Nordstrom Racks.

Consumer confidence is high and we have to recognize that we are just spending in different ways. Retailers have to pay attention to this and then adapt. It is important to understand trends. Top industries that are growing are restaurants, other (which includes categories such as, medical concepts, dental, tramp parks, dollar stores etc.) and then apparel.

There were four important points summarized at the end. #1 – Research isn’t the end. Research is critical, bit real estate always wins. #2 – Retail Recruitment is a challenge. Retail recruitment is economic development, but it is a commercial real estate function. Enlist the professionals in your community. Which we do!! #3 – Retail Recruitment is a marathon. Retail Recruitment is not an event. Manage expectations. This process takes time. #4 – Retailers are expanding. Seventy percent of retailers will expand this year. Get in the game.

And that is exactly what we are doing. We are in the game. We are sending out recruitment packets and following up with both e-mail and phone communication. We are paying attention to trends and reaching out to those retailers we know are growing. As stated in number 2 and 3 we understand this takes time, patience and perseverance and we are certainly in it for the long haul! And remember if you have any suggestions please feel free to share.

JB Hawks was founded on a long tradition of excellence. In 1930, Claude Ware, grandfather of JB Hawks founder Tom Ware, founded Wareco Gas Stations. Growing up in the Wareco family business instilled a number of values within Tom. In 2008 he brought those values to his own dream when he opened his first tobacco store in Jacksonville Illinois. The Canton store is the 17th to date and the first to open in 2017. It will be followed by a new store in Vandalia and Pontiac, IL as well as West

Quincy, MO later this spring and summer. JB Hawks carries many cigarette brands, chewing tobacco, pipe tobacco products, the largest selection of “Roll Your Own” tobacco in the state, cigars, drinks, snacks and vape products ranging from vaping devices to e-liquids. They also carry an array of merchandise to accommodate these products. JB Hawks is located at 730 S. 5th Avenue in Canton. They are open Monday-Saturday 9:00am-8:00pm and Sunday 10:00am-6:00pm. Bergie’s Café opened on March 21, 2017. I used to work in Blessings and when the café closed I realized I missed our regular customers. A lot of them would come in for lunch and then shop in the store. My family has owned their businesses my entire life. We knew the hard work it would take to get it up and running but I knew we could do it. As far as cooking experience I learned from my mom and granny and taught our daughters the same way. We have a few crash courses in cooking at church camps & mission trips. Dave works in Peoria but our daughters work with us. Hannah bakes & cooks. She also runs the kitchen allowing me to be out front making sure customers are happy. Sophie waits tables whenever we need her. We have 3 other people working for us, Andrea, Cassidy & Joe. They pitch in and work hard to get everything running smoothly. We are located in the back of Blessings Primitives at 74 North Main, on the square. We are open Tuesday-Saturday serving lunch from 11-2 and desserts from 2-4. We use as much unprocessed food as possible, everything from scratch we can. We cook real cuts of meat for our sandwiches. Organic produce when possible. Along with our regular menu we offer a good selection of hot teas, fountain sodas like Cheerwine & Jones Soda flavors, catering, full size desserts for take out, or you can reserve the café for showers, parties & meetings. Our goal is to provide great home cooked food and customer service that makes people want to come back often.

My name is Caylin Noonan. I am the daughter of Mike and Melissa Noonan. My brother is Travis Noonan, and my foster siblings are Jaymin, Jaylah, and Jersey. I am the Secretary of the CHS student council. I have also been a part of the following organizations throughout high school: Youth Leadership Academy, Key Club, National Honors Society, Dance Team, Class officers, Giant Pride, Club Unify, and Table Top Club. I also work at Big Creek Pool.

I am at the top of my class, and I plan to attend a four year university after high school. I decided to do the pageant because I wanted to gain more confidence in myself, and I wanted to step outside of comfort zone. I hope to gain many friends and memories throughout this experience. There is a lot of talent in this year’s show, so I encourage everyone to come watch!

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS Canton Area Chamber of Commerce is preparing our students for the workforce and providing them with a mentor program opportunity! We have collaborated with the Spoon River College Outreach to facilitate our workshops that will cover real world business practices such as leadership development, team building, communication, and business etiquette. Youth Leadership Academy covers all of the job skill basics such as career exploration; resume writing, safe online job searches, interview skills, and mock interviews. The Canton Area Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals wouldn’t be able to provide this valuable resource to our students without the support of our business community. We would like to thank them for another successful year of preparing our students for the workforce and providing them with local opportunities! We currently have 33 CHS students enrolled with a new group of 15 sophomores participating next school year. Our senior students will focus on job shadowing at various businesses in town and developing a business plan next year.

What is most disturbing about the crisis is that the most vulnerable people in our society are being used as pawns and being placed in peril. For example, domestic crisis agencies, services for the elderly, convalescent homes, and services for the poor are in peril. In response, all agencies at the meeting agreed that a community education forum would be most beneficial for our community. We all felt that a public forum discussing the problem would be most beneficial for the community as a whole. On June 12, 2017 a community forum will be conducted to educate community members of the gravity of the state budget disaster. Specifically, agencies will describe how a lack of revenue has impacted state services and how the absence of a state budget will continue to place local agencies in jeopardy – possibly fatally. If you are interested in attending the forum it will be conducted at the Canton High School auditorium on June 12, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. Please make every effort to attend this important forum to learn the depth of this crisis and how it will affect the residents of Fulton County.

By Rolf SivertsenSuperintendentCanton Schools

As I write this article our state legislative leaders continue to argue and squabble about petty issues while the entire State of Illinois is on the verge of collapse. Currently, the State of Illinois owes the Canton School District $1.6 million dollars with no projection on when the district will receive remittance. To put this figure in perspective $1.6 million dollars would pay the salaries of 32 Canton teachers. Most importantly, the total amount of revenue owed to school districts state-wide is $1 Billion. Interestingly, Chicago Public Schools is owed nearly $500 million dollars. Recently, I attended a meeting at the 1st Church of the Brethren in Canton to discuss this crisis and what our community can do about it. Attendees included representatives from Fulton County agencies negatively impacted by this crisis. Some conferees were so disturbed by the stories told of people impacted by this budget disaster that they were moved to tears. In the end, meeting conferees felt this crisis is a non-partisan moral issue that must be immediately addressed.
