Taste of CantonBy Amanda Atchley, Executive Director
The First Annual Taste of Canton event would not have been possible without all of our food establishments participating from all around the area. There were 17 businesses and 8 individuals that set up for the food tastings and wing cook-off. I would like to personally thank the Taste of Canton Committee, volunteers, and sponsors for coming together and making this event a success for years to come! Stay tuned next month for pictures of the 2015 Taste of Canton event and awards given.

UnityPoint Clinic – Family Medicine - Canton Canton newcomer Rachel Blodgett wants you to know - “There is tremendous value in being proactive with your health. If there’s any one thing I would share with everyone that would be it. And become more educated and responsible about your health.” That’s healthy advice. And it should be. Rachel Blodgett is the Canton-area’s new nurse practitioner with UnityPoint Clinic – Family Medicine – Canton. The Brimfield resident is married to husband Anthony. The couple has three children, Camden, 9; Mason, 6; and Alexis, 5. Rachel was a CNA at UnityPoint Health – Proctor before becoming an RN. She’s been a registered nurse since 2007. Clinicals for becoming a nurse practitioner brought her to Farmington and a friendship with UnityPoint Clinic – Family Medicine – Farmington’s Candy Johnson, NP, who also became a mentor. “I wanted to be a nurse to help individuals enjoy and improve their quality of life. In nursing, this is where I feel I make a difference. I learn something new every day. And maybe that something new is something I can share with someone else along the way.” UnityPoint Clinic – Family Medicine – Canton is located at 20 76 N. Main. Call for an appointment at (309) 647-6090.
Jeff Howd, RN, LNHAHeartland Health Care Center - Canton is pleased to introduce you to our Administrator, Jeff Howd.

Salveo Health & Wellness, the new medical marijuana dispensary located at the Basement Dewatering Plaza, held a Business After Hours Thursday, September 17th. There was a great crowd with over 100 people in attendance. It’s been a long time in the making, but those involved in the creation of Canton’s Salveo Health and Wellness are rounding the home stretch, and getting ready to open their doors after being the first dispensary in central Illinois to receive state approval and the third out of 60 facilities in the entire state to receive this approval. Salveo is expected to open as soon as cannabis is ready to sell.
Salveo Health & Wellness has completed its state registration and is on schedule to open as soon as medicine is available in Illinois.
September 23, 2015, Canton, IL – Salveo Health & Wellness is a medical cannabis dispensary in Illinois District 14, and is the first dispensary in central Illinois to be registered by the state. The build out of the facility is complete, state inspectors performed a final walkthrough recently, and the dispensary will be ready to provide medicine as soon as cannabis is ready to sell. The store’s staff has been in contact with cultivators across the state and will be ready to go once cannabis is available.
Once open, the storefront will focus not only on offering medical cannabis, but also on supporting holistic health, and promoting community involvement and service. It will offer herbal teas, essential oils and other wellness products, and it will host educational seminars in its community meeting space.
The dispensary recently launched its new website, www.salveohealthandwellness.com, which includes a large focus on patient education regarding both the Illinois Pilot Program, and medical cannabis itself. The long federal prohibition has resulted in many misconceptions, and the company believes that information is the best cure for misunderstanding. Salveo Health & Wellness hopes to serve as a premiere informational resource not only for patients, but also for anyone interesting in learning about the medicinal benefits of cannabis.
To foster a sense of openness and transparency in the community the dispensary recently held an open house that was attended by over 150 people including the mayor of Canton and several aldermen.

Canton Union School District #66The high school is about one month into our 1:1 Program. Every student at the high school has been given a laptop for use at home and at school. We also have wireless internet throughout the building. The device has firewalls in place to block certain sites and look out for student welfare. This is a great way for teachers and students to collaborate and communicate. It will also increase efficiency and open up new ways to teach our students. This does not eliminate face to face communication or classroom instruction. Instead it enhances the classroom and breaks down barriers to other worlds. Students can now communicate and learn from not only Canton teachers, but really from teachers and institutes from anywhere in the world. If you would like to visit the school and see how it is working, give me a call or the high school principal, Jennifer Watts.
Communication with our parents, our community and centers of influence in the community are very important to the district. We will continue to try to communicate with our website, newsletters like this, and other means of media and correspondence. We have decided to no longer mail home the quarterly newsletter. The newsletter will be on the website, and we will continue to publish it quarterly. We will save quite a bit of money with this reduction.
We use several media to try to communicate. We are represented on several committees and organizations throughout the city. We take pride in these affiliations, but they are also a key avenue for information flow. We have a very good website, Facebook Page, Twitter account. And we have a monthly podcast we deliver on our website (www.cantonusd.org). We do press releases on key topics that are generally covered in the Ledger, Democrat, and on WBYS. I think we make ourselves very accessible at the school and district level. We want to invite people in to our schools.
This is your school district. We want your input, guidance, and opinions. If you ever have a concern please reach out to me or your building principal.
Respectfully,
Roy WebbTEAM CANTON, STUDENT READY20 West Walnut StreetCanton, IL 61520(309) [email protected]
