Writing this in April, I can only hope that that that we all had a wonderful Easter weekend and that the sun shone for the various street parties taking place locally at the end of the month (and our camping trip!). history Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert were anxious to see their eldest son Edward married. He had quite a reputation with the ladies, and in later life Victoria partly blamed Albert’s early death in 1861 on his worrying about Edward’s standing.

Edward first met Alexandra Of Denmark in Speyer in September 1861 through his elder sister Victoria of Prussia. The marriage took place at Windsor Castle in March 1863. Edward was 21, and Alexandra 18. In those days royal weddings were not public affairs, and it is unlikely that anybody from New Malden attended the ceremony. We were still regarded as being part of Kingston, and in fact were neglected by the town. There was no street lighting, no public sewerage or drainage, no public buildings, no

major local school, and only a small church in Poplar Grove. With a population of nearly 1000, we were regarded as the poor relation.

Celebrations in kingstonIt is not recorded whether any public celebration of the event was held in Malden, but some of the residents must have journeyed to Kingston town to take part in the festivities there. These started

with the town “gun” firing at 7am, followed by the ringing of the bells of All Saints Church. At 9am the 12th Surrey Volunteers performed a “Feu De Joie” in the Market Place. The men assembled in two ranks, and by taking turns a volley of shots rang out from one end of the rank to the other. They then presented arms in a royal salute, after firing another volley into the air.

There then followed a dinner in the Town Hall for the “Ragged Poor” involving 110 children tucking into roast beef and plum pudding. At the Drill Hall there was a dinner for 600 of the “aged poor”, and again roast beef and plum pudding provided the basis of the meal. An ox was being roasted on the Fairfield, the poor beast had been decorated with wedding favours, and had been paraded through the town accompanied by a band of musicians. Unfortunately an unruely crowd had assembled, and the ox was torn to pieces after it had been cooked, but before it could be distributed. Inmates of the Alms and Workhouses were also fed on beef and plum pudding, washed down by beer and tea. The inmates of the workhouse were also given leave to watch the firework spectacular in the evening. Shopkeepers and the gentry had their own dinner at the Griffin, where many toasts were drunk. These tradesmen then proceeded to take part in a torchlight procession from the Market Place to the Fairfield, where a large bonfire had been erected (40 ft high and 45 ft in diameter). After being lit, the fire lasted for many hours, and the assembled crowd then walked to the Queens Road to watch the fireworks being set off from Messengers Ait. The National Anthem was sung, followed by loud cheers, before the tradesmen returned to the Griffin for champagne served in a large loving cup.

A lot of the shops displayed illuminations, and as this was before the town had been supplied with electricity, these were lit by gas. Crowns and stars were very popular displayed by many coloured lamps.

The local girlBy 1893, Malden was able to hold its own celebrations.

July saw the marriage of George the second son of Edward VII and Princess Mary (May) of Teck. George’s elder brother Albert had previously been engaged to Mary, but he had died of pneumonia in January 1892, and a year after his death George proposed marriage and was accepted. Mary was regarded in Malden as a “local girl” (as much as class would allow), the Teck family lived at White Lodge in Richmond Park, and often worshipped at St Johns in Kingston Vale.

The couple were married at St James Palace in July 1893,

and a garden party was held at the Lodge in Richmond Park at the end of June. At this function Mary was presented with a gift from the whole of the county of Surrey (including New Malden). This was in the form of a tiara in what was called the “Empire Style” covered in over 300 diamonds which cost £1,150. This was presented with an album of congratulations, containing the names of nearly 5,000 people who had subscribed to the gift.

New Malden decided that their celebrations would very much revolve around the children of the village, who were asked to assemble at their schools and then march

to Grafton Road before taking part in a procession to the grounds of Coombe House for a fete accompanied by the village band. Younger children were taken to the meadows in brightly decorated carts and vans. Shops and houses were also decorated in a wide array of bunting and rosettes.

In total there were over 750 children in attendance, and the entertainment commenced with a Punch and Judy Show for the girls followed by a similar one for the boys. Tea was served at 4.30pm, and the children were joined by 80 old people also from the village. Games and sports took place, and a ventriloquist/conjurer entertained the crowd. The National School provided a fan drill performed by the girls, and a flag song from the boys. The rest of the village arrived at 5pm, to be entertained by the drum and fife band, and string band. At 8pm after various votes of thanks, the children marched from the meadow back to the village, accompanied by the band. A group of the boys followed carrying Chinese lanterns followed by the carts carrying the smaller children. The procession stopped outside Holy Trinity Church where “God save the Queen” was sung, before proceeding home.

Meanwhile in Old Malden, Mr Horatio Miller had lent out the barn and cart lodge of the Manor House so that a tea could be enjoyed. The building was beautifully decorated with flags flowers and greenery. The band of the Kingston Volunteers played a selection of music, and after the church bells were rung a short service was held. The evening saw sports and dancing.

TrainspottingIn September 1947 after the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip the platforms of New Malden Railway Station were crowded with people hoping to catch sight of the royal couple as they journeyed down to Winchester. Although dusk was falling the Pullman Cars (Rosemary and Rosamund) were lit up, and some of the 700 spectators who had bought platform tickets were sure they had spotted Philip in his naval uniform.

Royal connectionsAn interested spectator at the wedding of Princess Anne and Mark Philips in November 1973 was former Chief Inspector David Coleman of Bodley Road. He had been responsible for the personal safety of the Princess for five years, retiring the day before her wedding. He is best remembered for his flying rugby tackle on a monkey, who had stolen a handbag, during a Royal Trip to Africa.

Hot off the pressAn interesting aside of the wedding of Prince Charles to Diana Spencer in July 1981 was the production of the book “Invitation to a Royal Wedding” by Colour Library International of Coombe Road. The book was in the shops just 10 days after the marriage, a remarkable feat as it contained over 20,000 words, and 200 colour pictures, and the printing was undertaken in Barcelona. The first 64 pages were completed within 24 hours of the ceremony.

Other connections with Malden for this wedding were that the arrangement of flowers on the Chancel steps of St Pauls were by Mrs Gwen Beckwith of Cromford Way, while facing the couple on the High Altar was an arrangement by Mrs Anne Ballard formerly of Southwood Avenue, with foliage from the gardens of Warren House at Coombe.

There has been speculation that Catherine may wear the Surrey Tiara (presented to Queen Mary) for the wedding this month, but as it has not been seen for over 100 years, this seems unlikely and it has probably been broken up.

The Civil Defence and Auxilliary Fire Service which had given such sterling service during the Second World War were stood down in May 1945, A farewell parade was held in Hyde Park on 10th June reviewed and addressed by George V1. In 1948 the Soviet Union exploded its first atomic bomb and Civil Defence became a necessity once again, together with the Royal Observer Corps who, with binoculars and telephone plotted the course of enemy aircraft. When we came to live in New Malden in 1951 their post was on top of the telephone exchange in Coombe Road, which was at the end of our garden, but they were very vulnerable in the age of nuclear weapons, and were moved underground, by 1965 the ROC had 1518 of these monitoring posts,

each reporting to a group head quarters. I joined Civil Defence in October

1957 as a result of a recruiting drive, first in the signals branch of Headquarters Section, using field telephones and radio, both in static positions and Land Rovers and Wireless Vehicles, later transferring to Ambulance Section. On Wednesday 20th. July 1966 we had an exercise which involved us going down a long ladder into the local bunker beneath Malden Golf Course. This was a fairly large control room from which the Scientific Intelligence Office used his equipment to to report fall

of missiles, radiation and decay of fallout . We on this occasion were removing 6 casualties in Niel Roberts stretchers up the shaft. The last SIO for the borough of Malden and Coombe is still alive and will be 90 in May 2011

Training for all Sections was carried our for the County of Surrey at a Rescue Range at Kiln Lane, Epsom where there were streets of houses used to rescue and treat casualties, this is now the site of a large branch of Sainsburys. The army also trained there, providing the Mobile Defence Corps. When Civil Defence closed again in 1968 we formed Malden Emergency First Aid Society and in the 1970s we held an exercise in a bunker at North Cheam, the entrance was in Church Hill, and below ground were offices, beds, control rooms, all in good order that we were able to use. For reasons best not discussed here, I have seen far too many television adverts over the past couple of months. Most are banal wallpaper that make no impression, but I suspect I am not the typical target market for most advertisers on daytime television (which by the way has to be the best incentive to get back to work). There are some however, which have riled me to levels varying from annoyance to outright anger.At a time of economic austerity and consumer nervousness, adverts proffering instant cash are of course going to attract attention, and especially from those most financially vulnerable. From the annoying “cash for your mobile phones” through to “cash for your gold”, these seem no more than licences for untrustworthy types to set about stealing phones and anything else that glitters and effectively “fencing” them through these virtually unknown outfits. Perhaps it would be worthy of some of the channels to also promote the recycling of phones through more

worthy causes and charities and even to have their use extended in third

world nations. The same was often the case with old spectacle frames. One of the gold adverts especially irks as they promote that they will take “even broken gold jewellery”. I am not sure quite how you can break gold as even in little pieces it is still – gold? However from the annoying area, let me move on to outright anger.“Pay Day Loans” are being promoted by smiling people happily holding a small wad of notes,

having seemingly found a way of resolving their particular financial issue. These loans are designed as short term cash facilities to cover you until quite literally your next pay day, but that bland and seemingly comforting offer only covers a far more dangerous problem. The rates being charged for such loans are astonishing with levels of up to 4120% per annum being quoted. This by any measure is usury. Whilst they may be intended for very short periods of time, just how many people are going to find themselves further financially strapped by late and delayed repayment at eye watering interest rates.Usury was illegal in the UK until the 19th century and in many religions the act of paying interest is against the

In medieval England money lending was illegal under Christian doctrine, and was it thus such unsavoury acts were pushed to the Jewish community - who were of course were banned from any other of the usual trades and professions because of their faith. Bill:Bill: Did you take in all the different things they do to help people like you and me.Janet: Yes, and with my nephew moving away, I will find it less easy to get to my appointments at the doctors etc. Do you think they could help me?

Bill: It certainly looks like it. They seem to cover a wide range of needs, and are willing to help not just with transport.Janet I always find it difficult to ask people I don’t know. Have you used them?

Bill: Not personally, but I have another friend who says they have helped her on a numbe number of occasions, and have always been very kind and understanding.Janet: That’s good to know. Is there anything else I should know?

Bill: Just remember they are volunteers – not a paid service etc. We need to give a few days notice of our appointments or other needs, then it easier for them to try to arrange for the help. Although my friend has always been fortunate to have the transport she needed, they may occasionally not be able to help – but I know they will try their very best. On another point, we also need to we also need to realise that the cost of petrol is very high these days, and my friend usually gives them a donation towards the cost.Janet: Thank you for encouraging me to think again about that the article.

The danger of sitting out in the sun is well documented and, in any case, the UK isn’t blessed with a steady supply of the natural option. But self-tanning options have really improved in recent years and from just a few £s you can gain a completely natural tan.

If you just need colour on a small area such as your face, a home self-tan is an ideal option. If you haven’t tried any of the available lotions recently then you won’t know how light or dark the results will be, so you should do a 24 hour patch test.

What sort of paintings do you like? Maybe you prefer photographs? Or poetry? Or music?

All of these are going to be in the air at the Christ Church Arts Weekend in May. We will be celebrating the passing of time through these formats, looking at the Four Seasons (OK – so that’s the music sorted out!) and how the world around us changes all the time, but is always interesting and always impactful.

The painting and photograph exhibition will be open from 2pm to 5pm on Friday 6th May and then from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 7th May. There will be music recitals in the church on the Saturday which you can listen to as you look at the exhibition and enjoy coffee, tea and cakes.

The main event will be a recital on Sunday afternoon, May 8th, at 3 pm when local

poet David Loffman will read some of his own work along with that of Keats, Hardy and Dylan Thomas, among others. The poems will be interspersed with a varied selection of season-themed music from flautist Patrick Gardner and pianist Simon Hancock (Vivaldi will be included!). Paintings

by Doreen Seward, whose work has featured in many exhibitions, will be on display in the church lounge, together with an exhibition of framed photographs by Hugh Griffiths, Vice Chairman of the Malden Camera Club. The paintings and photographs will be on sale, with all profits going to Christian Aid Week which starts the following week.

Oh – and that‘s one of the reasons we’re doing this: to bring the needs of people around the world to your attention and to raise money to help them. Christian Aid works with

It’s the odourless, invisible drug that helps millions of us face the new day. It’s constantly with us in the house (even the ‘smallest room in the house’ in my case - guess where?), the car, at work, in fact, almost everywhere. Sometimes by choice, sometimes inflicted on us, even from miles away (the car with the 20” alloys and speakers the size of dustbin lids), but usually welcome at some point in our lives.

What am I talking about ?

The Humble Radio.

I’ve been a radio enthusiast for longer than I can remember and have spent the sort of money on Hi Fi tuners (posh name for expensive radio) than most people spend on entire systems. Radio was once the only medium by which many were informed, entertained and challenged. For many, radio still remains the only way to access the outside world, but is now under attack from the hordes of different digital media all vying for our attention- and money.

I sometimes feel I’ve crash landed from Mars (or is it Venus) when talking about how wonderful the sound of either a play, or studio discussion from Radio 4 used to be via a high quality tuner. How can the sound of a “Discussion” be wonderful you ask? Well, in the “good old days” (Yes, I’m back off to space on a nostalgic trip !) when FM radio was in it’s heyday, the sound of just voices could raise the hairs on the back of your neck. The topic of discussion could become almost (but never) irrelevant as you revelled in hearing the actual studio in front of you. Imagine then, the thrill of listening to either a live concert or a wonderful piece of music on radio.

Of course, radio is still with us, and can now be accessed in a bewildering number of ways.If you’re still awake at this point, you might now start to lose the will to live after I tell you what media are available for radio.

Here goes.... DAB Radio. Can be

accessed via portable units, Hi Fi tuners, Freeview and Freesat TV’s, Sky, Virgin Cable, Mobile Phones and now increasingly in cars (heaven forbid).

The range of programming is huge if you like listening to new stations for one week before they disappear (harsh, possibly); and as for the sound quality- a lost opportunity.

Internet Radio. Can be accessed from- Let me think..... Yes, the internet! Given you can now access the internet from an increasing number of TV’s there’s no escape. The

range of stations is almost limitless and Australian racing commentary alone almost makes it worthwhile. Again, as for sound quality- well what do you think ?

FM/ MW/LW/SW Radio- Still with me ? This is where it all started. Still millions of portable radios around (a lot covered in paint I’ve noticed recently) along with almost as many in cars, but

all still going strong.Sound quality- I’m afraid studio

discussions don’t do it for me any more.

I’ve tried not to go into the technical aspects of radio for two reasons:

1) Do you really want to know whether DAB transmissions are vertically or horizontally polarised ?2) I don’t want to sound like a vindictive, miserable, cantankerous, whingeing, grumpy old git, longing for the days of valve radios.

The point I’ve tried to make is that in a world of increasing choices, quality tends to suffer. This is true not only of radio but in many aspects of our daily lives. For the vast majority of us, the greater range of access to and range of radio programs should be applauded, but why this has to be at the expense of sound quality is a discussion left for another time (and after a few drinks possibly).

Alas, radio doesn’t thrill me in the way it once did, but I live in hope that once again, Radio will not just be the companion we take for granted, but something to genuinely excite us ! VVoice

Why the Alternative Vote referendum matters, whether you are for or against

On May 5th there is a referendum across the UK which will ask voters to say yes or no to the Alternative Vote (AV) system for electing MPs to Parliament. A ‘yes’ result would change the voting system to AV, and a ‘no’ result would keep the current system of First Past the Post.

Under First Past the Post, voters cast their vote for one candidate in their constituency and the candidate with the most votes wins. MPs are regularly elected under this system with less than 50% of the vote. In elections using AV, voters rank their candidates in order of preference. If a candidate receives over 50% of first preference votes, they are elected. Failing this, the party with the least first preference votes is eliminated. The second preference votes of constituents who ranked the least popular party first are then added to the first

preference votes of the other parties. This process is repeated until one party has over 50% of the vote. If the allocation of the second preference votes does not produce a winner, then the process is repeated with third preference votes and lower until a winner is decided.

One advantage of introducing AV would be that candidates in many constituencies would need to court the second preference votes of people who give their first preference votes to other parties to be elected. This could potentially strengthen the democratic link between constituency and representative, as MPs would

be forced to take into account a wider spectrum of opinion within their electorate. AV would also reduce the number of ‘safe seats’ in the UK, where MPs are elected on such large majorities that they effectively have jobs for life, as a smaller shift in public opinion in any given constituency would be needed to produce a different electoral result than under First Past the Post. Certainly worth noting is the fact that all three major political parties use AV to elect their leaders. For many Pro-AV campaigners, AV is not the ideal voting system, but they argue that if it is rejected that this sends the message to politicians that there is no appetite in the UK for electoral and constitutional reform of any kind.

Those against AV and in favour of First Past the Post argue that the current system is simple, with one person to one vote, and generally produces clear majority governments able to govern decisively.

The ‘No’ camp argue that AV could be expensive to implement (thought the ‘Yes’ camp dispute this) and this would be an inappropriate use of public money at a time of deep spending cuts. MPs elected under AV would potentially lack the legitimacy of those elected under the current system because they might have come second or third on first preference votes, relying on second preference votes for their majority. One potentially explosive argument is that AV would give too much power to those who vote for minority extremist parties, and that their second preference votes could in a very limited set of circumstances decide the result of certain constituency elections. The experience of other countries that have elections using AV is often not a positive one: in Australia the turnout for elections dropped so much after the introduction of AV that compulsory voting had to be introduced to ensure the democratic legitimacy of the result.

The result of this referendum matters, because MPs have so much responsibility, and so the way they are elected is important. Whichever way you decide to vote, I urge you to go to the polling stations on May 5th.

Asparagus Bruschettas

Serves 6Ready in 20 minutes

recipeEnjoy the wonderful flavour of fresh British asparagus with these deliciously simple topped toasts. To make them more substantial add some flaked smoked mackerel or ruffles of Parma ham.

12 fresh asparagus spears, trimmed6 thin slices crusty bread (such as sour dough)6 tbsp good quality olive oil1 large garlic clove, halved225g (8oz) goats’ cheeseHandful of rocket leavesSalt and freshly ground black pepper

1 Half fill a large frying pan with water and bring to the boil. Add the asparagus spears and simmer for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water.

2 Brush the slices of bread on both sides with some of the olive oil. Place the slices on a hot cast-iron griddle pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until just crisp and lightly charred in places. If you don’t have a griddle pan then simply grill the toasts.3 Rub the cut garlic cloves all over the hot toasts (this imparts a mild garlic flavour to the toasts). Spread the goats’ cheese over the toasts. 4 Arrange the asparagus spears on top of the cheese and add a few rocket leaves to each. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately. VVoice

Welcome to the monthly article from your local Safer Neighbourhood Police Team. This is my last article as Sergeant Nick Ellis will be back from his secondment with the Prince’s Trust at the end of April and I will be returning to response policing.During my short time on Beverley Ward I have enjoyed working closely with the residents and businesses. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support over the past 4 months and I’m sure you will continue to support Sgt Ellis on his return.Below are the current crime issues that face the residents and businesses of Beverley ward and some advice on how NOT to become victim of crime.Scams & Con tricks.Lotto frauds. Lotto frauds are becoming prevalent in the UK with promises of huge winnings arriving in the form of unsolicited e-mail or letters to UK residents. Invariably the communication will purport to come from an overseas lottery and claim that the recipient has been allocated winning numbers. The recipient will contact the organisers, whether directly through telephone, by post or e-mail and will be invited to send money in to assist in the administration for the release of the winnings. These winnings do not exist. This is merely a scam and attempt to illicit money from unsuspecting victims. As the winnings on offer are substantial, so too can be the advance fees required to release the funds. The cruel part of this scam is that suspects will build up a rapport with victims through telephone contact in order to continue the flow of money.In the case of e-mail anyone can be a victim, ‘spam’ e-mails are sent en-bloc. With letters the criminals can be a little more specific and in many cases the elderly are most at risk. Suspects pay good money for mailing lists and they do target those lists that deal with the elderly. Invariably highly organised gangs based overseas are behind these frauds. It is widely acknowledged that there area large number of Canadian syndicates involved, specifically targeting the USA and UK. If you receive a communication like those described, do not answer it. You can report these communications to the Enquiries Unit at the Office of Fair Trading. Enforcement teams within the Office of Fair Trading work with the Canadian Authorities to collect evidence. The Canadian Authorities can use this evidence to prosecute the fraudsters. The number is: 08457 224499.Identity theft. Identity theft is the unlawful taking of

another person’s details without their permission.

The information stolen can be used to obtain many financial services, goods and other forms of identification i.e. Passports and Driving Licences. The information stolen can range from a copy of birth certificate to copies of discarded bank or credit card statements and utility bills.• Be careful with your personal information. If you receive a telephone call from a credit card company, bank or other retail company asking to confirm certain details about yourself decline, and ask to call

them back preferably through a central switchboard. • When destroying personal correspondence such as bank and credit card statements consider a shredder or even burning them on the garden refuse. If you cannot do both then tear the papers up into very small pieces and place in the refuse bin with other waste products. • If you move address remember to inform all of the companies that send personal information to you in the post. Always consider re-directing your post with Royal Mail. If you fail to do this people moving in might have free access to your personal details and misappropriate them.

Harry: Did you read that article about Malden Care last month?Joyce: Yes, It was really interesting – full of accounts of people they have helped.

Harry: I called them the other day and asked how I might help. Joyce: But you live such a busy life – how could you fit anything else in?

Harry: Well – first of all if I was willing to be a Duty Officer – I would only need to be available for one day a month at the most.Joyce:Joyce: It sounds an important job – would you need training and where are their offices?

Harry: I asked just those questions; and they reminded me that I would be linked with an experienced Duty Officer and need no more than a morning’s ‘training’. Also there would always be someone I could contact if I was not sure what to do. Also the work is done from our own home, so there is no travelling to do.Joyce: That sounds very organised and much simpler than I thought.

Harry: As I drive, I offered to take people to hospital appointments etc.Joyce:Joyce: How often might you be asked to do that?

Harry: They couldn’t answer that, but said that I was always free to say ‘No’ if the day or time was not convenient.Joyce My car might not be suitable for all people, as it only has two doors.

Harry: All those details they would record when you offer your help. Joyce I know I would be a volunteer, but the price of petrol these days would make it impossible for me to do many journeys.

Watching the honey bees working the spring blossom on the plot recently set me wondering: just how many bees could our allotment site support? How much does it cost to keep bees and how much honey could they produce? Do bees go for anything that flowers or do they have preferences?

I am one of the many who know precious little about these wonderful creatures, other than that they die if they sting you, and that their numbers have been in serious decline because of a virus carried by the varroa mite. Beekeeping friends were happy to fill me in on some bee basics.

Mark, who has a hive on a plot near mine, lent me a bee suit so that I could experience

the day-to-day management of the hive up close. His hive, a National type with two deep drawer-like boxes, is set up against a boundary hedge, well back from the main path to minimize the risk of disturbance, and screened by a thicket of raspberry canes. “Bees often get blamed for wasp behaviour”, Mark explained, “but they will only bang into you if you stand in their flying line.”

Sure enough, at that moment a bee knocked against my visor. It is a disconcerting sensation to hear such a loud buzzing near your face without being able to see the insect. I backed hastily into the raspberries as Mark removed the top of the hive to inspect the bees. He lifted out each of the 22 frames to check on progress and look for signs of varroa infestation, such as deformed wings. Although

the mite is minuscule, an expert eye can actually spot it on a bee’s back. Things looked promising: no sign of disease and lots of purposeful activity as the bees went about the business of raising their brood. Then it was time for the bees to have their monthly dusting of icing sugar. Soon the air was filled with clouds of ghostly bees in a glucose-fuelled frenzy. This natural product encourages the bees to groom themselves and knock any varroa mites off their backs.

Mark was confident that this one hive could increase to about 50,000 bees by high summer. A site the size of ours could support ten hives. That’s 500,000 pollinating machines for our crops and a honey yield of 80 to 200 lbs per hive, depending on local conditions. Recent research suggests that honey from the locality can ease allergic conditions such as hay fever, and beekeepers like Mark report that they can never make enough to satisfy demand. But with start-up costs of around £500, it is not a cheap undertaking.

Our site is rich in plants beloved by honeybees: fruit trees, brambles, rosemary, thyme, lavender and of course, beans. But non-gardeners can take comfort from the fact that the amber pollen sacs you so often see may well come from dandelions, an absolute favourite with bees. VVoice

Teachers, pupils and parents at New Malden’s Christ Church Primary School are getting ready to dive in to a fun packed day next month (Saturday May 21st) at its “wet and wild” sea life themed summer fair!

Chosen and voted for by the children’s “School Council” the “Sea Life” summer fair will once more be the flagship event in the school’s fundraising calendar.

The gates* will open at 12 noon on Saturday 21 May for what promises to be a great day for all the family! Money raised will help fund a range of ‘extra’ facilities for the children such as gardening, sports & arts equipment, and visits and workshops from authors and artists.

Co-chair of the school’s PTA, Sarah Wills, says; “We’re really hoping this glorious start to the Spring will continue – but whatever the weather, we know everyone will have a fantastic time! We are so lucky to have such wonderful support from parents and friends as well as many members of the wider community and we really hope this year’s sea life theme will appeal to all ages!”

The Christ Church Primary School Summer Fair will offer a huge range of fun activities for people to watch and take part in. This year there will be some new activities including an inflatable slide, a large bouncy castle, an outside seated refreshment area, Gilbert Giggles’ Magic Shows, a bullseye target shooting game and a World of Golf game.

I’ve been obliged to write this month’s article in

rather a novel fashion using a technology with which I’m unfamiliar. In one sense, this technology is very easy to use: there is no doubt that it is light and portable, for example fitting easily into a coat pocket or a brief case. What’s more, it’s available instantly as there’s no need to charge it up, plug it, or wait for it to boot up. This makes it’s ideal if you need to create document s away from your base or if you are on the move and particularly if you travel internationally as you do not need to worry about having a power adaptor. So you can just pick it up and start straight away as it shows you where you left off. It also comes in a range of prices to fit every pocket - from the ludicrously cheap to the ludicrously expensive – and unlike lots of technology the consumables are inexpensive and readily available.

OuchOn the other hand, it is pretty hard work and labour intensive: given the intensity of pain from the cramp in my hand, I’m sure that I’m already suffering from some kind of repetitive strain injury although I’ve only been using it for a matter of minutes . The spell checker has to be bought separately and requires a certain level of understanding to be able to use it but thankfully it doesn’t use any horrible Americanisms – no “z” in words ending “ise” thankfully. Also, it does not come with a built in backup system so if you lose your work then it’s gone forever. It is however completely impervious to all computer virus, existing or future,

ages I’ve been meaning to sort and print out;

daughter’s homework; ideas for future Village Voice articles; the great

unfinished novel. Not only that but I couldn’t access emails or the internet and ,shock horror we were off to visit the internet, email, WIFI free zone that is my mother’s house. How would we find out what the traffic was going to be like? What the weather was doing? What were the opening times of that the exciting National Trust property the daughters were so desperate to avoid (it was sure to have an Easter Eggstravagansa –

because they need more chocolate at this time of year don’t they)? How was I going to get my article to Jenny?

So, what do the xxxxxxxx, sorry people, who write computer

viruses get out of it? The one that infected our PC wasn’t particularly vicious, most of our data is intact and, thanks to clever chap who advertises in the Village Voice (page 26), the PC is now back up and running. There was no apparent financial gain to its author just a lot of angst and aggravation for me. Does the hassle he, virus authors are mostly male, caused me give him some perverse sort of thrill? Presumably you have to be a bit clever and quite a bit IT literate to write this stuff and get it to invade

someone’s computer (but not that literate as it was an obvious spelling mistake that gave away the virus)? So why not use all that time and expertise to build

something worthwhile and profitable?

So, what was this wondrous technology that I was forced to turn to in the absence of a working PC was, in fact, an old one- pen and paper. And boy was it hard to use! My hand aches, I’ve realised that my spelling could be better and when, I eventually came to transcribe it into Word, couldn’t read my own hand writing, had to start again and nearly missed my deadline!
