From the Editor

Phil Gregory’s article last month generated some interesting comments,

one in this edition, “In Response”, and some online at villagevoicetideswell.org.uk.

Debate is always a good thing and none of us get it right all the time but if things are done for the good of the village community, then even if we get it wrong, or approach things in the wrong way, then having one’s ear torn off in a negative and unproductive way is a little disheartening.

I speak of a phone call received recently, where, maybe as chair of Taste Tideswell or as editor of this veritable organ, I was subjected to fifteen minutes of growing unpleasantness, about an event I personally have nothing to do with the organisation of.

As Phil so eloquently said, Tideswell folk are very welcoming to all who chose to join in and involve themselves in village life.

In response

Bravo Tideswellman - we all agree with what you’ve said.

“We” are a friendly group who meet for coffee - life long residents, long term incomers and new incomers, all laughing and chatting together.

One lifelong resident can remember your childhood ambition to be the first black Prime Minister. We wish you were........

The March to Wakes

Hi everyone! Just a reminder about the public meeting on Thursday 7th

March from 7.30pm at the George Hotel. As well as village residents, local businesses, associations and clubs are also very welcome, so please come along to share ideas and find out how to get involved....or just come along for a drink and hear about the latest plans for Wakes 2013.

If you cannot attend the meeting and want to express ideas or contribute in any way just stop one of us in the village or get in touch by emailing [email protected].

Liz Hill, Chair Wakes Committee

Easter Corners

Children, and the young at heart, are invited to come along to this short

informal time of worship. There will be plenty of movement and activity, not to mention Hot Cross Buns and juice, as we lead up to the celebration of Easter.

Details will be given out at our schools about the related craft competition.

All welcome.

Wakes 2013

Wakes will start on Saturday 22nd June and end on Sunday 30th this year

with Big Saturday on 29th. Get the dates in your diary and tell as many friends as possible, especially those who live out of the village.

Pre-planning Advice

The Peak District National Park Authority is introducing a new pre-

application advice service for people considering development of their property or land.

The service, which includes appointments with allocated planning officers, will improve on previous ‘drop-in’ sessions when only general information could be given. People who need advice should initially contact the Authority’s Customer Service Team on 01629 816200 or [email protected]

Customer service advisers can answer general planning queries, but for more detailed enquiries about specific ideas, a planning officer will give pre-application

advice and normally see the application right through the process.

Director of planning John Scott said: “We want to communicate more effectively with our customers so that they understand what to expect and what is expected of them. They will also be advised about any fundamental problems with the proposal and how they could be resolved to give the application a better chance of success.

The new advice service is also hoped to raise the quality of developments by giving time at an early stage to negotiate changes to proposals that would enhance the national park setting.

Allotments Plans 2013

The days are getting warmer and lighter, and some of us are desperate to get

out on to our allotments. The seeds are bought, potatoes are chitting, and we all hope that it can’t possibly rain as much or be as cold in 2013 as last year - that the dreaded blight will stay away - and that things will just grow bigger and better next time.

However - it is hope tinged with experience! Despite last year’s conditions being so difficult, we had a hugely successful Open Show in August 2012. We had over 240 entries in the Fountain Square Church Hall, many from new exhibitors as well as old friends. We also had lots of visitors to the Show, who enjoyed the wonderful displays of flowers, veg’, photos of local scenes, and home cooking - as well as the lovely art and poetry from children in the village. There are lots of photos on our web site.

But even though the event was so successful, it might be even more successful if we put back the usual date by a couple of weeks - just to extend the growing season a little. So in 2013, the planned date for the Open Show is 31st August - start planning your prize winning entries now!

We are always looking for new ideas for the Open Show, and in 2013 we are introducing a new category for just this year for knitting or crocheting a child’s cot blanket (30” square approximately). All entries will be donated to the charity Samaritan’s Purse - Operation Christmas Child, but there will be a cash prize for the winner of this category. So while you are waiting for your seeds to arrive - get knitting or crocheting

- there can be no blaming the weather on this occasion.

Further information about the Tideswell Allotments Association can be found on our web site - www.tideswellallotments.org.uk.

Tidza Ramblers

The village walking group is fairly small but definitely well established. Walks

are six miles or so, usually on the second Sunday of the month. Sometimes additional walks are arranged between those who like to go out more often or cover longer distances. A few park ranger led walks have been excellent too.

We would welcome new recruits. I go out occasionally with another group and can’t help but notice that the length of the lunch stop seems monitored. A couple had just poured coffee into flask cups when the instruction came to move on! Be assured that this won’t happen with our group.

LIVING HISTORY

Our thanks go to those whom we have interviewed during the past month.

Again we have recorded some wonderful memories which are being transcribed by our hard working team. You will shortly be able to listen to some at www.soundcloud.com/tideswelltales.

One of the main topics we discussed at our last month’s meeting was the ‘Telephone Kiosk’ which we adopted last year. Before we can install any equipment the kiosk needs a ‘Face Lift’ so we would like to ask all local handymen/painters to give us a quote for some maintenance and painting. Call Paul on 01298 872285 or Gill on 01298 871900 to discuss our needs.

The kiosk will become a ‘MEMORY BOX’ and we would like to incorporate a poem

on one of the side of the box. We therefore invite anybody from any age group to enter a competition to write one. The winner will be invited to the unveiling ceremony. Put your entries in an envelope and post through letter-box at 16 Church St. The poem should be associated to a memory and our village.

We would still like to see some more locals getting involved in our forthcoming performance, so come on all you budding actors and story tellers, get in touch and help us produce something really exciting for Wakes Week. And finally, March has arrived and we are officially one year old. We have achieved a lot over the last twelve months and it’s mainly thanks to you and your contributions. Let’s all keep up the good work and see this project grow.

PARISH COUNCIL MATTERS

At the February meeting no members of the public were present. The Council

meets at the Library on the second Monday of each month at 7.15pm, and members of the public are welcome to attend. A period of time is set aside at the beginning of each meeting for public questions. The next meeting will be held on Monday March 11th.

The bank balance at 25th January, stands at a healthy £22,457.05, largely thanks to the work of the Clerk Lesley, who has claimed back VAT from the past 4 years, along with reimbursable payments from Derbyshire Dales District Council over the same period. These had not been claimed by the previous Responsible Financial Officer. These one-off payments will enable the Council to carry out work throughout Tideswell as planned, without cutbacks at present, and will provide something of a buffer.

Sadly some of the money which has been spent by the Council is being lost to residents because of theft.

Items such as water butts have been replaced at the cemetery several times, when stolen. Now the latest material to disappear is the salt/grit which is placed in the grit bins. The Council spent just over one thousand pounds on grit, ready for the snowy icy weather.

Within two days the bins have been emptied. Obviously the grit is there to be used, and residents are free to use it on the road or pavement outside their own property. It is provided for the benefit of everyone in Tideswell, to make life easier

during the winter. However some people have used grit on their own personal paths.

More seriously, grit appears to have been removed. Please will witnesses report any such thefts to the Clerk on 01298 872000.

Most people in Tideswell will already have received notification from Derbyshire County Council about the reduction in street lighting. A plan is displayed in the Parish Council Notice Board (on the wall of the Co-op, in Gratton Gardens). Comments and queries should be addressed to the DCC at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/streetlights, or at County Hall, Matlock DE4 3AG by 19th March.

Shortly the Parish Council will undertake one of the most pleasant duties, in recognising achievements within Tideswell. The Community Awards for under 25’s and for over 25’s will be presented at the Annual Parish Meeting. Nominations for each category should be sent to the Clerk.

Sue Barber on behalf of Tideswell Parish Council.

Thank you for your patience – normal service will be resumed as soon as

At Peak Volumes on Commercial Road in Tideswell, we are moving into the final stages of preparation before throwing open the doors around Easter. Julian Wright, based in Eyam, is building shelves for us, and then our job will be to get the right book on the right shelf!

Do check out the window arranged by Fiona Rogers – forget the snow and look forward to the holidays and mountain climbing, trips to the beach, holiday reading and sightseeing. Look out for our next window later in March, and watch this space for the latest news!

Keep following us at the blog at www.peak-volumes.com, on Facebook and Twitter (@PeakVolumes), and in the window of the shop.

THE KITCHEN GARDEN 2013

One day the garden is covered in snow and looks like a winter wonderland

and a few days later the snow has gone, the sun is shining and it begins to look like spring.

We are managing to take advantage as and when the sun shines so now the soil has been given a good dig and a feed, the garlic that was planted in December is now beginning to pop up, the greenhouse has been cleaned out, all the pots given a wash ready for the next planting, the seeds have been ordered and we’re on target for the best growing season the Kitchen Garden has ever had! And we definitely intend to feature at the May Food Festival, more details in the April Issue.

Many thanks for all the donations we received for the garden last year. It means we now have 2 compost bins in good use, a thriving array of soft fruits as well as somewhere to sit and enjoy the garden.

And, please, if anyone has any garden furniture surplus to requirements, it would be gratefully received.

We’d also love to hear from you if you can spare some time to help us. It can range from a few minutes to a few hours. There is sometimes lots of do and sometimes less, and we always have a good natter whilst working.

Just get in touch with either Maureen on 871542 or Judy on 872408.

For the Sauce:3 spring onions finely sliced 2.5cm piece of ginger, peeled and cut into matchsticks2 garlic cloves, finely chopped1 red chilli1 celery stick finely slicedHandful of beansprouts1/2 red pepper finely sliced2-3 tsp caster sugar75ml rice vinegar & 75ml light soy sauce

Method1. For the beef, pour the vegetable oil into a deep fat fryer or medium saucepan and heat until it reaches 180C, or when a small cube of bread dropped in turns golden in 30 seconds.

2. Whisk the eggs and cornflour in a bowl to form a batter that has the consistency of single

cream (add a little water if required).

3. Coat the steak strips in the batter and fry in the oil for around 2 minutes, or until the batter turns golden brown. It may be better to fry the beef in small batches so that it doesn’t all stick together. Once ready, remove the beef from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain on a tea towel or kitchen paper.

4. Heat a frying pan or wok with a tablespoon of sunflower oil. Add the spring onions, garlic, chilli, ginger, celery and peppers and stir-fry for a couple of minutes until the vegetables start to go soft but still have some bite to them.

5. Add the rice wine vinegar, soy sauce and sugar and bring to the boil. Add the bean sprouts and the beef and mix together well until all of the beef is coated in the sauce. 6. Serve the crispy chilli beef with boiled rice, spring rolls and prawn crackers.

At t’Flicks

Tideswell Cinema transports us into the world of espionage, with the choice of

‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ as March’s film, to be shown on Wednesday 27th at 7.30pm, upstairs at The George.

This 2011 film is based on John le Carre’s novel, and is set in 1970s London, in the midst of the Cold War. It follows the hunt for a Soviet double-agent at the top of the British Secret Service. It seems the Soviets have turned the service inside out.

‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Actor for Gary Oldman’s performance as George Smiley. John Hurt and Colin Firth also star. Guest Members for the night are welcome, at a cost of £4.75.

The committee apologises that we were unable to show ‘The Whistle Blower’ in January, as the screen broke as we were putting it up. We have decided to show it on our April date, Tuesday 30th April, and the final film of the season, still to be selected, will be shown during May.

Food Festival 2013

Plans are moving forward for our third annual Food Festival which promises to

be bigger and better than the previous two.

If you would like a stall for the day, please see Phil Walker in the Post Office. Last year we had local businesses and organisations joining in the fun along with the visiting stall holders and with a packed village all reported brisk trade.

The Festival is also looking for volunteers to help on the day. Directing traffic and visitors, helping stall holders, smiling and looking cheerful and just being on hand when something needs doing.

If you’re part of a local group or band and would like to do something - dance, sing, exhibit - then do contact Phil.

The Festival is for everyone in the village and helps to highlight what the village has to offer and what a great place it is to come and shop. By doing that, it’ll help to keep our shops open whilst other villages are losing theirs.

Cressbrook Film ClubFriday 1st March 8pm SEVEN SAMURAI (PG)

A classic black and white Japanese movie made in 1954, which has been hailed as one of the greatest masterpieces of film-making. Hollywood translated it into the extremely popular 1960 western THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN – but not a patch on this original version. Starring Toshiro Mifune, Takashi Shimura and directed by Akira Kurosawa.

Cressbrook Film Club has a 4 metre screen, 5.1 surround sound, really comfy seats, the bar is open for refreshments before and after the film and there’s a warm welcome for everyone - old and new members and guests. Doors open at 7.30pm, film starts at 8pm and lasts 190mins.

Friday 15th March 8pmTHE WAY (cert 12)

Stars Martin Sheen, James Nesbitt and written and directed by Sheen’s son Emilio Estevez. Sheen plays an eye-surgeon with a comfortable Californian life who flies to France to collect the ashes of his wayward elder son, played by Estevez, killed in the Pyrenees during a storm while walking el Camino de Santiago, a famous Spanish pilgrims route. Great script, great direction, great scenery.

Doors open at 7.30pm, film starts at 8pm and lasts 123mins.

Membership of Cressbrook Film Club is £21 for the whole season with guest tickets available at £4.50 per film for adults and £3 for kids. Contact Carole on 01298 871

Stunning Music for Church

A top band is coming to Tideswell in March to play at the Parish Church.

On 21st March The Old Dance School stops off in Tideswell for an exciting Derbyshire date on its national tour this spring. Radio 2’s Mike Harding says of them “Stunning... full-on, full of life and verve.”

This cinematic septet will unleash their duelling fiddles, soaring brass crescendos, wind and vocal harmonies and earth shattering grooves in a genre busting live show in Tideswell that will leave the audience breathless. The seven members have a remarkable diversity and scale. From international jazz festivals to European opera tours, film score commissions to classical recitals to green festivals.

This is great music with a strong Derbyshire connection and following. Their shows are very popular so make sure of your tickets now. It will be a great evening, appealing to all tastes in music. If you’ve not seen them perform before make sure you see them now!

Brought to the village by Tideswell Arts Festival. Tickets £11 and £9 from Tideswell Post Office and Litton Shop, bookings on [email protected] and 01298 871063. Check out theolddanceschool.com for more information.

WHITE POISON

This was the very unflattering nickname given to milk production of 150 years

ago. Our speaker at the History Club meeting in February was Dr. Rodger Dalton and during his talk on the Railway, Milk Trade and Derbyshire Farming he explained that milk supply was so subject to contamination and adulteration that it became known as this “troublesome trade”.

Growing corn became uneconomic for farmers after the repeal of the Corn Laws, so many of them went into dairy. Around here however, they had great difficulty in getting liquid milk to consumers in the towns and so they concentrated on cheese making. Many of our farms used to have a cheese press in the dairy and they would raise pigs using the surplus whey. They also changed the breed of their cattle from the old Longhorn to the Shorthorn and because much of the upland areas were covered in heath, they burnt and limed and ploughed on the limestone moors (such as our Heathydales) until they could make good pastureland. Around here, we made Factor’s (dealer’s) cheese of about 20lbs weight, but it was described as only a middling sort of product. One of the customers for this cheese was the Navy and they actually jumped on it to test it! Eventually, we developed small factories for more efficient manufacture such as those at Hartington, Gratton, Grange Mill and Parwich.

Urban dairies sprang up in towns (Islington was reputed to have 20,000 cows tied up), with the fodder being carted in and the manure carted back to the countryside. This process was terribly subject to contamination and in 1865 the cattle plague Rinderpest, a disease imported from

Estonia, played havoc. Stray dogs were put down, agricultural shows cancelled and cattle were ‘treated’ with pepper, vinegar, nitre and saltpetre, with little success.Worldwide events affected also trade. During the Napoleonic Wars the price of cheese tripled, but by the 1870s we were importing 74,000 tons of American cheese, because it was 10 shillings a hundredweight cheaper than the home production of 80,000 tons. The explosion of railway transport in the mid 1800s altered the trade again and soon 80% of all milk was being carried by rail. Because of their dubious practices, many town cowkeepers lost their customers to the sweet uncontaminated milk coming in from the countryside. Because of the railways, Burton on Trent greatly expanded its beer production so brewers’ grains became readily available as fodder. Even the workhouses in Manchester benefited from the railways, because then they could have freshly delivered milk. However, this “troublesome trade” still took its toll – infant deaths in 1900 were 150 per thousand, the same figure as it had been in 1840! One of the biggest culprits was tuberculosis, so when Nestle opened up a milk processing factory in Ashbourne they did a great trade, because mothers trusted tinned milk more than the fresh. On a lighter note, our speaker told us that Dairy Crest still delivered to his doorstep. He rang them up to alter his order and noticed a foreign accent so asked where he was speaking from - Manilla! Another superbly informative talk for the club – come and join us on March 14th at 8pm in the Institute, when we shall be having a talk about the restoration of Heage windmill.

New vicar for Village

The Rev’d Simon White, who has been vicar of West Hallam and Mapperley

with Stanley and Stanley Common about eight miles from Derby, for nearly fourteen years will be joining us in Tideswell in June of this year.

He is married to Gillian, who is Associate Priest in Chester Green, Derby, and who works at a big acute teaching hospital in Nottingham.

In his own words Rev’d White says: “Key elements of my ministry so far, which I feel passionate about, have been pastoral care, working with schools, developing the life of village churches, and creative projects bridging church and community.”

We hope you will all join us in welcoming Simon and Gillian to the village.

Beat the bin price rise

Time is running out for Derbyshire residents to buy a discounted compost

bin before a price increase comes in at the start of April.

Currently the cheapest compost bin through the County Council’s discount scheme is £16 plus a £5.49 delivery charge.

Councillor John Allsop, our cabinet member for recycling and technology, said: “I’d encourage anyone thinking of getting into composting to buy a bin before the end of March to save that little bit extra.

“We want to help Derbyshire residents reduce the amount of waste they send to landfill. Composting at home is a great way of achieving this and also helps protect the environment.

Compost bins and accessories can be ordered via www.getcomposting.com or by calling 0844 571 4444.

Bowl’d Over Mar ‘13

Well here we raring to get on that green again; the antidote to cabin

fever induced by indoor short mat bowling. It’s an entirely different game; it’s a head game which needs tactical thinking but it’s not the same as being on the green having the sun & a cooling breeze in your face. Or, as in the case of last year, driving rain & gale force winds.

Enough of those fond memories and more about the delights in store for this year.

The first, non-bowling, event of the year is ‘Rack your Brains Quiz’ on Thurs. March 13th at 8pm in The Horse & Jockey hosted by the inimitable Wain & Wright; £5 including sandwiches & chips or £1.50 for the quiz only.

The green opens on 23/3/13, weather permitting. Please come & have ago on Fri. evenings after 6pm.

On Sun. 26th May (Spring Bank Holiday) we’re having our open day, some of you came last year to the Jubilee one. Sun, fun & bowls, we hope, with refreshments & Wain & Wright entertainment.

The event of the year, in Wakes Week, will be Rock ‘n’ Bowls 4 with a similar format as last year. Watch this space for more info – be there or be square.

Help at Hand for Farmers

In the mid 90’s mad cow disease or BSE knocked the British cattle industry for

six. Many a livestock farmer would say that this was the start of all the regulations and bureaucracy that has invaded their lives; it was further compounded by the 2001 Foot & Mouth Disease epidemic and the insidious spread of bovine TB, and more recently the Schmallenberg virus.

Walking side by side over this same period of time has been the springing up of local support groups, willing to give a helping hand to farmers and their families. I am privileged to be part of such a service available to Derbyshire farmers.

In fact I wear FOUR hats! Let me explain.

Farm Crisis Network (FCN) is a national Christian based organisation with over 300 volunteers within 32 county groups across the UK. The Derbyshire group comprises 10 trained volunteers, including several farmers, and myself as the county coordinator. In 2012, emotional and practical support was provided to 23 new referrals. A national telephone helpline operates every day of the year by volunteers – the number being 0845 367 9990. The website will give you more information: www.farmcrisisnetwork.org.uk

My work as agricultural chaplain was God’s timing for me and the industry I serve. Due to falling numbers I was made redundant from my position as lecturer in agriculture at Derby College (Broomfield). I moved in to the chaplaincy work ten years ago in response to a need for extra pastoral support for hill and upland farmers of the Derbyshire Dales and High Peak. Since

then the work has extended to include the Amber Valley area. This is an ecumenical position, working alongside the leadership of the rural churches, under the wing of Workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire, and managed by Rural Action Derbyshire. I have a presence at Bakewell Market on Mondays - being a member of the Rural Health Team, where an increasingly used farmer’s “Drop-in” clinic operates. I also attend Derby Market on Thursdays.

My chaplaincy work includes planned and unplanned farm visits, networking, hospital/prison visits etc.

Find more information on my personal website – www.GrahamHinds.com

Over the past two years I have been acting as Rural Officer for the Derby Diocese, providing information, help and support to the rural clergy, as well as representing the diocese both in and outside of the county.

I am a founder member of the Agricultural Christian Fellowship, which provides social interaction, support, fun and fellowship to local farming families. There is a variety of meetings over the year, including a farm walk and a barbecue. The next meeting will be held at Calver Village Hall on Saturday 11th May, starting at 7.45pm. Feel free to encourage local farmers to attend.

Graham Hinds (01332 602124/07833 638562/[email protected])
