From the EditorWhat a busy month we have ahead of us. The Diary Dates are jam-packed so apologies if you have to get your magnifier out to see them.

We have an exciting day ahead when the second annual Food Festival hits the streets again. Bigger and better than last year, it’s a perfect reminder of why Tideswell is such a wonderful place to live and a perfect place to visit. Spread the word amongst family and friends and let’s make it a day to remember.

Elsewhere we have an appeal for action if you value our quiet, beautiful green lanes. They need your support to ensure they don’t become churned up by off-roaders.

We also get advance notice of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Tideswell and Litton and an appeal for our own Wakes royalty too.

Pete Hawkins

How does your Garden grow?

The nursery rhyme tells us that it is with “silver bells and cockle shells” - but

even those of us who are not gardeners know that isn’t so! The best results come through pruning, caring and encouraging our plants. Then the fruit and the flowers and the foliage will prosper and be beautiful.

So why choose “How does your garden grow?” as the title for a new service at the Parish Church? It is not going to be a version of Gardeners’ Question Time! But aren’t we all a bit like plants? We flourish with love and care and encouragement - and sometimes with a bit of ‘pruning’. Jesus says in the Bible “I am the vine, you are the branches. Remain in me.”

This will be the focus for the first All-Age Worship - shorter, less formal, and with greater variety than the usual weekly service. It will be a service for all ages - not just a children’s service, not just an adult service - hopefully with something for all.

So do come along on the 6th of May; bring your children, bring your grannies and grandads! This service launches the All-Age Worship, which will then be on every first Sunday of the month, at 10.30am in the Parish Church.

Singing for the Peak District

A Peak District choir is giving a concert in the heart of the Peak District – in

order to raise funds to protect the Peak District!

The early music chamber choir, Renaissance Voices, is performing an evening of choral music in Taddington Church on Saturday 19 May. Money raised from ticket sales will go directly to Friends of the Peak District, the local charity that protects the landscapes of the National Park.

There are around 24 singers in Renaissance Voices, which was established in 1989. It brings together musicians from a wide area of the Midlands and Northern Counties to promote performances of Renaissance and Baroque music from its base in the Peak District. The choir’s repertoire includes English and Italian Madrigals, French Chansons, Tudor Anthems, Latin motets, masses and psalm settings, mostly performed a cappella.

It’s going to be a glorious programme including English and European works. St Michael’s and All Angels is a fourteenth century church with lovely views across the countryside from the churchyard, so it really is a beautiful setting for a choral concert. All proceeds will go towards Friends of the Peak District’s vital work protecting the Peak District’s precious landscapes, so people will have a wonderful evening whilst also helping to raise funds for a really worthwhile local cause.

Tickets are £10 and available from Friends of the Peak District. Ring 0114 266 5822 or see www.friendsofthepeak.org.uk.

Tidza Ramblers

A walk led by a park ranger at the start of April was most enjoyable.

It was good to find unknown paths near Litton Mill. The ranger’s request to spray our hands in order to participate in an ecological survey had puzzled us initially, in fact all were fooled!

If the evening is fine there will be a walk on the 2nd and 23rd.May. The route will be chosen by those present.

The Sunday walk will include Rowsley and Chatsworth. Could there be bluebells? Bring a packed lunch as usual. See ‘Diary Dates’ for details of walk times.

Helen Royle. 872550.

MS Get Togethers

A recent highlight in the MS calendar has been the MS Life Conference in

Manchester. An amazing array of talks was on offer on many areas in which Multiple Sclerosis can hit. We attended talks on the impact of fatigue, managing health at work, new areas of research, how exercise can help MS, positive thinking and the impact of MS on attention, memory and I can’t remember what else…... !

Anyway our next Get Together is on Saturday 19th May at Vanilla Kitchen in the ice cream parlour from 10:30 to 12:00

Also everyone, please come along to our Cake Bake, which is kindly hosted by Tideswell Surgery on Parke Road on Friday 11th May from 11:30am.

All welcome

Truly Village Ventures

Bank Square Garden and Fountain Square Garden which are Parish

Council owned, have now been filled with flowers kindly donated, planted and tended by volunteers from the village. Seating is there for everyone to take time out to enjoy the gardens.

This is in addition to the Kitchen Garden behind St. John’s Institute that is in the process of being developed into a thriving fruit, vegetable and herb garden; another venture that is looked after by volunteers. By summer this will be another area in the village for you to sit in and enjoy. Watch this space! The vision of yet another village space is no longer a dream – just a lot of hard work in progress. Again, plants and vegetable seedlings have been donated.

So if you have the time, inclination or plants for either venture, please contact Mary (01298 871817), Judy (01298 872408 email [email protected]) or Maureen (01298 871542 email [email protected]) who would love to hear from you.

Help 4 Heroes

We would like to say thank you to all who made the H4H fundraiser such

a successful evening.

Our heartfelt thanks go to all businesses, large and small, and individuals who donated raffle prizes or cash. Also to Howard Thurlby, Jo Bothamly and Maxine O’Connell. To Holdsworths Frozen Foods, for providing the food, and Phil Gibbs who carved the meat. To ‘Wainy & Wrighty’ for a superb evening’s entertainment and to Nic Phillips and her staff at the Horse & Jockey for all their hard work.

Our final thank you goes out to the people of Tideswell, (and further afield), who ensured a great turnout, and showed (once again) that even in these hard times that they can ‘Come up trumps !’

Thanks to you a cheque for £1,670.09p has been forwarded to Help 4 Heroes.

Tina Greenan & Steph Walker.

P.S. One question, to Derbyshire Police, who ‘called in’ early in proceedings, (and declined to make a donation !),…..Why ?

Red Envelope Week

Imagine spending ten hours grating cassava into flour, so you could feed your family.

For villagers in Gbap, Sierra Leone, this has been a reality, but because of support from Christian Aid, channelled through Sierra Leone’s Methodist Church, a new community Agricultural Centre will mean it can be done by a simple machine. And that means time and energy saved, and a better income because ground cassava can be sold at a higher price than whole cassava. A small development, a big result for Gbap.

Changing lives for poor communities - that’s what Christian Aid is about, and with Christian Aid Week upon us this month,

Village Voice13

we can all be part of that. May 13th to 19th is the week in which most homes in the village will have that little red envelope popping through the letter box. To quote their Director, “Every single person counts in the fight against poverty”. Please respond, and be one of those who joins with millions of others nationwide to help make a difference.

If you feel you could help by collecting from your own or a neighbouring street, please contact Margaret Filer on 871681.

Running Club Race Reports

Helen Grainger ran the Bungay marathon on Sunday 15th April in a

time of 3:15:36. In her own words, ‘I was 4th female and very chuffed’.

We meet every Wednesday at 7pm, outside The Star in Tideswell. Our goal is to get people running, regardless of their experience or speed. Whether you are a seasoned runner or racer, or a complete beginner, therefore, we aim to cater for your ambitions and needs.

Each Wednesday we lead two running groups: one group that runs approximately 6 miles in a hour - or more, if you are a faster runner and complete more turn-backs; and a second group that aims to help people get into running, either via a walk-run session or a shorter and slower paced continuous run, depending on the individuals present.

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in TideswellFamily Fun Day Sunday 3rd June 2012

Tideswell, like many other places in the country, would like to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a celebration.

The group who met to discuss what we could do decided on a “Family Fun Day” with something for all ages to enjoy.

It will begin with a united service at 10.30am in the Parish Church at which we hope to have the Brownies, Scouts and the other uniformed groups present.

This will be followed by a “Bring your own picnic” either outside in the church grounds or in church if it rains. We hope to have Maypole dancing, face painting and children’s games.

In the afternoon we plan to have a “Memories Tea” at 3pm in the Institute, during which those who are old enough can tell the rest of us what they remember about when the Queen came to the throne and the subsequent Coronation. If you have any souvenirs or photos to bring and share with others that would be wonderful. While this is happening tea and cake will be served.

JUBILEE PICTURE COMPETITION

In the time leading up to the day we shall run a competition for children to produce pictures with a Jubilee theme. It will be open to children between the ages of five and sixteen and prizes will be awarded for the best pictures from each of the following age groups: under 5’s, 5 to 8 years, 8 to 12 years and 12 to 16 years.

Pictures should be no bigger than A4 with your name, age and address on the back.

All entries should be delivered to:

Mrs Sandra HowardNovember CottageBank SquareTideswell

by 5pm Friday 25th May and winners will be announced, and their pictures displayed on the Fun Day.

If any older residents require a lift to either church or the memories tea please contact one of those listed below. If you would like to help in any way, big or small please also contact one of those below. Thank you.

Tideswell Theatre

Friendship and Honey is an absorbing tale of an unlikely friendship comes to

Tideswell on Thursday 10th May when New Perspectives Theatre Company visit with their latest production, The Honey Man.

The play is a fascinating and beautifully-detailed account of the friendship that develops one summer between Misty, a 15 year-old girl who lives in the local manor house, and Honey Man, an ’ancient’ Afro-Caribbean man who occupies a derelict cottage on the edge of the village.

As their friendship grows through the summer, we discover how their lives and families are strangely entwined.

This is a tale of growing up and growing old, of individual responsibility and shared history, of dying bees, healing herbs and just a little magic.

The show has received excellent reviews including a four-star rating in The Guardian. New Perspectives have visited the village many times over the years since Thank God For Cod came to the village 10 years ago. Most recently they visited with When Steeple Sinderby Wanderers Won the FA Cup, and before that Lark Rise to Candleford, Those Magnificent Men, The Farm, The Allotment and others. Their productions are very high quality; if you’ve seen them before you’ll want to see them again. If you haven’t - come to this one!

7.30pm Thursday 10th May at the School Hall, Bishop Pursglove School. Doors open at 7.00pm. Tickets £9.50 and £7.50 (concessions) from Tideswell Post Office and Litton Shop, bookings on theatre@

tideswell.net and 01298 871063 - get more news about Tideswell Theatre on Facebook and Twitter. Further information about the play at newperspectives.co.uk.

Brought to the village through Live and Local, the Arts Council and local authority supported scheme to bring top theatre to communities, the play is suitable for adults, children over 12 years and bee-keepers of all ages!

Parish Council Matters

I apologise that there is no article for this edition of Village Voice. I was representing

the Parish Council at the Standards meeting, so was unable to attend and to report on the most recent Parich Council meeting.

I will publish a report in the next edition of Village Voice. Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible.

Sue Barber on behalf of Tideswell Parish Council.

Tony is going to Dilston

After two years of fighting for funding and a disappointing response last year, this

year Tony will be funded to attend Dilston College in Northumberland for two years.

Tony and all his family would very much like to thank everybody who has supported us and signed the petition, especially the staff at Peaches and the Male Voice Choir.

We believe this will be an amazing opportunity for Tony to learn the skills he needs to live as independently as is possible and be a participating member of society and live a life he chooses . He is very keen his bags have been packed for months!

Thank you againHelena (Tony's Mum)

The Derwent Dams

Tideswell Local History Club were treated to a remarkable talk about the

Howden and Derwent Dams at their April Meeting. Keith Blood, who is a Blue Badge Guide from Mickleover, showed us some very clear photographs which were taken during the construction, and explained that he was basing his talk on previous in-depth work by Vic Hallam and Prof. Brian Robinson.

By the late 1800’s, the nearby cities of Sheffield, Nottingham, Derby and Leicester were becoming concerned over their supplies of fresh, uncontaminated water, and so got the relevent Acts of Parliament passed for work to commence by 1901. The siting of the reservoirs could not have been better from a collection point of view. Upstream, the high moorland around Bleaklow attracts rainfall of nearly 60 inches per year (by comparison, Chesterfield, only 25 miles away, has only 30 inches per year).

Under their highly accomplished engineer Edward Sandeman, the contractors dug very deep and wide trenches across the valley with narrower wing trenches biting into the hills on either side. These were filled with large blocks of sandstone which were grouted into place with concrete, which was made with aggregate crushed on site. (One wonders where they obtained their cement, because Hope Cement Works was not opened until 25 years later). The facings of the walls were of the wonderfully cut and shaped sandstone blocks that we see today. The nearest top quality stone was to be found at Bolehill Quarry above Grindleford Station. There they cut and shaped the masonry before sending it up to Derwent by rail. By great good fortune, the Hope

Valley Line had just been opened, but after Bamford, they had to create their own railway up to the workings.

Most of the work was by pick and shovel, but they did have steam-powered navvies and cranes to assist them, and stretching across the entire trench was a huge, high level, aerial ropeway known as a “Blondin” (named after the famous tight-rope walker). Most remarkable was the fact that during the construction of the dam walls, they had to move the river bed of the River Derwent across the valley floor and then back again later.

To connect to the Sheffield supply, they had to drive a tunnel under the moors between Rivelin Dam and Derwent. A retired water engineer in the audience told us how he had walked the full length of this tunnel and that it was cut in good sandstone rock. “It was driven from either end and had no airshafts” - so when they were digging, ventilation must have been quite a problem.

To house all these workers, a special camp was set up, consisting of several rows of excellent huts made of wood-lined corrugated iron. It was officially named Birchinlee, but soon rejoiced in the familiar name of Tin Town. However, this encampment had far more facilities than any of the existing local villages. It even had a missionary!

Keith had so many more stories to tell and many more pictures to show that we decided to present these on another night later in the year. This was the last talk of the present season, many thanks are due to the members of our committee and especially to our tireless speaker-finder, Julia Walker.

More Community Use for HVCCome and join us for an ‘Open college’ evening - Thursday May 3rd

Hope Valley College is keen for the local community to make more use of their facilities. So here’s a chance to look round the College and see if you, or a local group you’re involved

with, might like to hold an event, organise an activity, use the library or join a course. We’d also like to get your ideas and suggestions for the kinds of activities and courses which could take place at the College in the future.

If you’d like a guided tour (with refreshments!), then come along between 6.30 and 7.30pm on 3rd May. At 7.30 pm there will be a meeting where we can discuss ideas and plans for the coming year, especially for evening activities. All are welcome.

If you have suggestions or questions, you can ring the Community Education Office at the College on 01433 620662 or email [email protected].

Village Football Reunion

On 5th May at the Horse and Jockey there will be a grand reunion for all

those who have been involved with football in the village over the last 40 years or so.

Football has been popular in Tideswell for many, many years - the first club ‘White Star’ being formed as far back as 1897/98. Then came ‘Tideswell Primitives’ in the mid 1920s; ‘Tideswell Albion’ ( Lantern Scratchers) - don’t ask - in the early 1930s; Tideswell ‘Red Star’ and ‘Blue Star’ continued up to and after the war with Blue Star and Tideswell FC merging to form the present Tideswell United FC in 1978/79. At times the club has been very successful - for example winning the Derbyshire Divisional Cup in 1989.

So if you want to meet up again with players, managers, supporters and old friends, please come along to the Jockey anytime after 6.30pm - it should be a really good night.

MINI HISTORY – TRACKS AROUND TIDESWELL

Around Tideswell, there are over 70 roads, byways, old turnpike roads and

minor roads. This area is a good example of the Peak District as a whole.

Before 1813, “all was heath and barren moor” except for main saltways, mining tracks and a few turnpike roads. Stone walls were virtually unknown. Strip allotments were divided by moveable hurdles.

However, the Enclosure Acts changed all this, allowing wealthy landowners to divide up the common land. In Tideswell, 1481 acres were enclosed in 1807 and 1822 saw 2713 acres enclosed. Between this time and 1860 was when most of the tracks and walls were built. The limestone used was hacked out using crowbars and picks from escarpments and fields. The beautiful “green” tracks, as we know them, were made up of cinders, dust and angular limestone pieces, which were probably the wrong shape for walling. The result is what we see today. The special lanes and walls are between 150 and 190 years old. The limestone track material probably sat on a natural or man-made footing. They were built for farming folk to access the fields with horse and cart, move sheep and cattle about and for lead miners.

The track material and walls even today can withstand walkers, horse riders, animals, bicycles and even slowly driven light cars. Tractors with their large tyres do not impact greatly on the fragile lanes. Besides, farmers are making a living and it is usually their walls which they have to maintain. They also repair and respect the

lanes. They were not built for 4x4 vehicles or trail bikes as entertainment tracks.

Peak Park as custodians Unless the Peak Park who are our custodians of these fragile pathways and walls do not take action urgently, we believe that in 10 years time we will have seen the disappearance of many of these tracks as we know them today. The PDNP alone have the power to put in Traffic Regulation Orders (T.R.O.) to stop the use of 4x4 off roaders and trail bikes.

The SportIt seems to be the challenge of driving “off road” which attracts certain people to these fragile lanes. They cannot be unaware of the irrepairable damage they cause to walls and tracks, let alone the social impact on others trying to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the Peak District. The more uneven the surface the more attractive it is to drive through it, deepening the problem.

Walls – what causes the impact? The 4x4s and bikers drive in social groups of between 3 and 7 vehicles, often one after the other. The rumbling weight of these vehicles vibrates the ground and damages the dry stone walls. The walls are fragile and it does not help when off roaders get stuck and put walling stone in the ruts.

Cost of rewallingThere are about 40,000 people living in the Peak District. We pay our rates and some of that money presumably goes towards the rewalling and retracking bills to keep pace with the destruction. The farmers and private owners also have to rewall. The rebuild costs of walling at £50 per metre

Village Voice27

on each side will be £160,000 per mile. The future looks extremely expensive.

The law on tracksPractically all our small lanes are ‘Byways open to all traffic’. BOATS for short. This enables all vehicles to use tracks and roads, apparently, because if a horse and cart can use a track, then so can a 4x4 vehicle. This strange piece of outdated legislation seems to be the platform for all argument from authorities. Unfortunately, the disappearance of some of our beautiful little lanes, as we know them, will have taken place before the law is changed. They will be replaced with new walls and dust/aggregate road surfaces which will be constantly subject to renewal every 7 to 10 years, as more and more off roaders enjoy the ‘Peak Park Safari’. Doubtless, there will be booklets giving routes in grades of difficulty.

Twenty million people live within 65 miles of the Peak District. If one in 4,000 come with 4x4 or with trail bikes that’s 5,000 every week-end. The destruction will be unstoppable.

You can join the Peak District Green Lane Alliance at PO Box 7976, Gt. Longstone, Bakewell DE45 9AY. Have a look at these websites: www.pdgla.org.uk and www.gleam-uk.org

The Peak Park have recently appointed their own Access Officer called Sue Smith, whose responsibility it is to look at the whole question of our tracks within the Peak District.

I urge people to write in and put forward their views so here are two important names and addresses. We have to stop the rut!

Anybody wishing to contact me, please write to Bernard at the Peak District Green Lane Alliance address.

Jack Thwaites

BOATS in Tideswell

This is a serious matter with a comical title. Several lanes in the Tideswell

area have been “put up for BOAT” which means that unless residents contest this, our lovely lanes will be damaged or lost for ever due to off roaders.

Sadly I was unable to attend the last Parish Council meeting as it took place at the same time as the Derbyshire Dales District Council Standards and Audit meeting, which I was required to attend. The Parish Council received notification of BOAT in our area.

Please will any residents who feel that this should be discussed, contact the Derbyshire County Council and/or Peak District National Park.

I understand that the full details have been forwarded to Village Voice by others. I urge residents to ensure that they have their say. This is my own personal opinion and has not been sanctioned by the Parish Council. I feel that waiting for another meeting would be counter-productive.

New Cricket Season

Tideswell Cricket Club’s 2012 season has begun – with a cancellation. The first

match, away at Youlgreave, was called off after a lengthy spell of wet weather in April.

But there are 34 more fixtures lined up, 21 of them at home – including a further 3 v Youlgreave, and the other usual local opponents. In May, Tideswell will be paying a first visit to Dove Holes CC to play a youth team. A touring team from Norfolk is coming in July.

This year, several of the older players are either retiring or less available. We have a few younger players joining the team – but we need more to ensure that we can honour all the fixtures.

We need younger players, and we need older ones too. We are aware we need a coaching set-up, but for this we need experienced players with coaching qualifications and the necessary clearance.

Meanwhile we’re offering the chance to play proper cricket in a friendly environment, against teams with players of all ages. We only charge a match fee (which is considerably reduced for younger players).

If you fancy a go, please contact me.

Bob Walkden, 871804

Bowl’d OverIt’s been a long winter waiting for the green

to open again in this gloriously balmy weather. Some of us had fun indoor short mat bowling at school – thanks school.

At the recent AGM John Hallows was

elected (no coup d’état) as the new El Presidente because Alan Thornton had decided to retire ‘gracefully’.

Some bowling news: the club has been relegated to Div. 2 in the Mon league which might not be too bad because the team has won their first two matches. The Mixed Up pairs on Tues, didn’t fare so well. The weather was truly atrocious; so bad that the next day some team members had to go to the vet to have their webbed feet sorted out. The Veterans, newly promoted to Div.1, got Christmas Turkeyed on their first game but won their 2nd.

Something Missing In Your Life? You don’t need expensive therapy, drugs or counselling because it’s crown green bowling at Tidza bowling green that’ll raise you to levels of euphoric bliss that you didn’t know existed. Come to our open day on Sat. June 6th from 11am to have a taster – no charge – nothing too serious or fraught. Refreshments available; a Bar B Q between 12 ‘til 2 with Wain & Wrighty doing a bit of a ‘Brunch Show’. Bowls provided but please bring flat soled shoes or bowl in bare feet if the mood so takes you.

Are you ready for the return of the Toilet Duck in Rock ‘n’ Bowls 3 during Wakes week on Wed. 27th June? Similar format to the last few years BUT with a prize for ‘best’ headgear this year. Watch this space for more info.

Finally, there’s a club night every Fri. from 6pm if you’d like to come along to have atry. We have excellent facilities for which there’s no charge – well it’s only 40p for tea & biscuits.

Griff
