Abstract: A study of the macromycetes species (Ascomycota and Basidio-mycota) in the Republic of Macedonia is underway. According to research hitherto, approximately 1,200 macromycetes species have been recorded in the Republic of Macedonia. In comparison with data from other European countries, this figure is minor and approximately 4,000 macromycetes species are expected to be found in future. This work is a small contribution to the list of fungi species identified in the Republic of Macedonia. The total number of species reported in this work is 44, assigned in 25 genera and 15 families. They mostly belong to various families and orders of the classes Basidiomycetes and Ascomycetes. Certain species must be regarded as very uncommon and interesting findings. Key words: Fungi, Macromycetes, Ascomycetes & Basidiomycetes, new species for the Republic of Macedonia

Introduction

The Republic of Macedonia is mycologically rather poorly investigated. There has been very little systematic fungi research, and it is only lately that a clear picture of mycoflora in certain regions of the country (Mt. Pelister, Mt. Jakupica, Mt. Galičica, Mt. Kožuv, the Šar Planina mountains, Južno Povardarie, etc.) has been produced. Based on research to date, 1,200 macromycetes species

have been recorded in the Republic of Macedonia. In comparison with data from other European countries, this figure is minor. In view of the ecological circumstances, approximately 4,000 macromycetes species are to be found in the Republic of Macedonia.

Some publications have been produced by foreign mycologists who have mostly visited the country only once, or studied material sent to them by others, such as Litschauer (1939), Petrak (1936), Pilàt (1936–42), Sydow (1921). Among Yugoslav mycologists, Ranojevic (1909, 1938) and Lindtner (1943) provided some data on fungi in Macedonia, mainly micromycetes. The vital papers by Lindtner on the macromycete flora of Macedonia are those written together with Pilát (1938, 1939). Nonetheless, the greatest contribution to the research of Macedonian mycoflora was made by Tortic (1967–1988), who published many papers, alone or with co-authors, as part of her research in this country. M. Tortich was the first to conduct a systematic investigation of the mycoflora of variuos areas (Pelister and Jakupica). The same author (1988) published the first contribution to the mycoflora of Macedonia, where her re-search was summarised and covered 585 species of higher fungi. Recently, mycological research in various areas in Macedonia has been conducted by the present author (1989, 1993, 1994, 1995 a,b, 1998 a,b, 1999, 2000 a,b,c,d, 2001 and 2002). The emphasis has been laid on lignicolous macromycetes, although – terricolous fungi have also been collected.

According to the research to date, approximately 1,200 macromycetes species have been recorded in the Republic of Macedonia. The majority of the species (1,050) belong to the class Basidiomycetes, and 130 species belong to the class Ascomycetes. Of the former, 450 species are Aphyllophorales and 550 are Agaricales.

Materials and methods

The sources of this list are published papers, exsiccates deposited in several herbaria, and chiefly the results of field research conducted by the pre-sent author. The major part of the material was collected during the period of 2000–2005, in different associations, on soil, dung or on fallen branches and stumps of different trees. The determination of the species was performed du-ring field research and at the Mycological Laboratory in the Institute of Biology, Faculty of Natural Science, Skopje, microscopically, by using reagents (Melzer’s reagent, KOH, sulfovanilin etc.). Some of the species were determined while still in a fresh condition (Agaricales, Boletales, Cortinariales, Russulales, etc), and others were to undergo further laboratory analyses. Some of the samples were preserved in the National Mycological Collection (FUNGI MACEDONICI),

while all indispensable data about the species were fed into the MACFUNGI database.

The following keys and monographs were used as resources for the determination of the fungi collected: Ahti et al. (2000), Allesio (1985), Basso (1999), Breitenbach & Kränzlin (1981, 1986, 1991, 1995, 2000), Boertmann et al. (1992), Corfixen et al. (1997), Däncke (2001), Krieglsteiner (2000), Moser (1983), Pegler, Spooner & Young (1993), etc. The names and synonyms are according to Index Fungorum 2005.

Research Results

The total number of species reported in this list is 44, assigned to 25 genera and 15 families. They mostly belong to various families and orders of Basidiomycetes; a small number of Ascomycetes with conspicuous carpophores was also noted. Species are arranged in taxonomic order; for each the date(s) of finding, types of forests, if lignicolous also substrate, their distribution in the region, altitude, data source, collection number, as well as some more relevant ecological information are supplemented. Discussion and Conclusions

The total number of species of fungi reported in this list is 44, assigned to 25 genera. These species belong to 8 families, mostly to Hygrophoraceae (9) Tricholomataceae (6) and Boletaceae (6). All species are reported for the first time in the Republic of Macedonia. Certain species must be regarded as very uncommon and interesting finds. Of the interesting species the following may be highlighted: Amanita vittadinii, Boletus satanas, Hygrophorus marzuolus, Poronia punctata, Tuber aestivum, Caloscypha fulgens, etc. Thus, the species Amanita vittadinii, Boletus satanas and Hygrophorus marzuolus are part of the Preliminary Red List for the Republic of Macedonia (Karadelev 2000). The species Amanita vittadinii belongs to the group of very rare or rare species of fungi in Macedonia, while Boletus satanas and Hygrophorus marzuolus belong

to the group of threatened species of fungi in Macedonia. Boletus satanas is also a species from the Red List of Europe and belongs to group A (Ing, 1993). The species Poronia punctata is significant because it is one of the 33 species proposed for protection by the Berne Convention. The species Tuber aestivum and Caloscypha fulgens are edible; it is necessary to put them under protection in the future, in particular the first, which grows underground and is valuable from an economic point of view. The listed species were predominantly found by the present author du-ring long years of research. A small number of specimens were brought from various places by several other collectors. Rarely noted species are generally considered as rare. The main difficulty in investigating the occurrence and dis-tribution of fungal species is that they cannot be recognised while in the vege-tative state; the mycelium may grow for years in soil or in wood, but the species can be identified only when it produces carpophores. These may be perennial or coriaceous and long-lasting, and therefore often to be met with, or short-lived and developing at a particular time of the year and can be recorded only if the right person comes to the right place at the right time. Some fungi fructify every season; others at intervals of several years. Many species are rather small or even inconspicuous and easily overlooked in the field. Since most of them cannot be recognised without a microscope, the result may be that one has collected a dozen or more specimens of one and same species, and very probably missed several others. Due to the above reasons, although the present author has endeavoured to research as many localities and collect (and identify) as many species of fungi as possible, not only in Macedonia but also in the wider area, he is aware that he has merely skimmed the surface. For mycological research, many persons are required, specialists in various groups.

Acknowledgements I wish to express my gratitude to Dr. Matthias Theiss from Biedenkopf, Ger-many, for his production of some of the photographs included during the field research in the Republic of Macedonia.

vida makromiceti, {to e mal broj vo sporedba so drugite evropski zemji.

Vidot Amanita vittadinii spa|a vo grupata posebno retki i retki vidovi gabi vo Republika Makedo-nija, dodeka Boletus satanas i Hygrophorus marzuolus spa|aat vo grupata zagro-zeni vidovi gabi vo Makedonija.
