A bonus being that the fundraiser for Polio falls in Rotary Foundation month. Unfortunately, the theatre was not terribly generous, charging Rotary $12 a ticket and to obtain the $8 for PolioPlus the cost of the ticket had to be set at $20. Rotarians can see the movie at a lesser cost from the following day, however, it is appreciated that you have all purchased tickets in the spirit of the event being a fundraiser for Rotary’s number one project. Thank you for your support and we look forward to enjoying an interesting film whilst raising some dollars.

Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

First meeting for November saw us with a guest, Sandra Neal and we hope to see Sandra again in the future.

Daniel Forsdyke, the other member of our Waist Disposal Team, gave us the second of the presentations on the Challenge, the n u t r i t i o n a l a s p e c t . Completing the initial questionnaire alerted many of us to just how little we really did know about facts and figures, however by the end of Daniel’s presentation we ended up much more k n o w l e d g e a b l e a n d hopefully it will aid all who take up the Waist Disposal Challenge to obtain results. I neglected to have Simone officially thank Daniel, so our ‘official thanks’ for a most informative address and my apologies for closing the meeting before thanking you Daniel.

November is Rotary Foundation month and at the Dr. Ken Collins Address on 16th November, the Paul Harris Society will be launched. Daniel wrote up the PHS a couple of Bulletins ago and I refer members to

an article by PDG Ross Forgione on page 20 in the current Rotary Down Under Magazine on the PHS in D. 9630 in Queensland.

Blasie Johnson has accepted membership of the RC of Freshwater Bay and we look forward to welcoming Blaise back into Rotary in the coming weeks.

Our Christmas cum birthday dinner on 17th December is on track to be a special occasion. Please make sure you have it in your diary and invite friends and family to celebrate our first year of service with us. WA Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley is an outstanding speaker and we are fortunate to have Lyn to address the club on the night and as a bonus, we have Richard Symons who will perform four numbers plus a Christmas carol. It’s been a busy year, which is racing by at a frantic pace. At the Board meeting last Wednesday evening, it was satisfying to see so many fine projects coming to fruition. Manna Industries funds should soon be in the special bank account set up for the purpose, the Wiluna Single Focus Group Study Exchange is progressing and the magnifying microscopes are really gaining momentum. A fundraising concert at

Christ Church Grammar with Richard Symons, his group and students from Christ Church Grammar is in the very early stages of p l a n n i n g f o r around February and forms will be out any time for nominations for Board positions for next year. You can all be very proud of your efforts as the new Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay has c o n t r i b u t e d significantly to the l o c a l a n d i n t e r n a t i o n a l community during its first year.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Amelia, fundraiser for PolioPlusThis Wednesday, 11th is the pre release of the movie Amelia at the Greater Union theatre in Innaloo, with $8 from the sale of each ticket going to Polio Plus.  A bonus being that the fundraiser for

Condolences to Graeme and Elizabeth BainAll members of the RC of Freshwater Bay extend sympathy to Graeme and Elizabeth on the passing of Graeme’s father last week.  Our thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time.

Rohallah HaidariDisappointingly, Rohallah Haidari was not successful in being selected for a Peace Fellowship.   Bill Hassell has spoken with Rohallah and he will now look for a job and a way to bring his wife and half brother out to Australia.  All members wish Rohallah every success in all his endeavours as he is a fine young man.

Club DuesThere are still a few members who have not yet paid their club dues.  The Rotary Down Under subscriptions for the next six months have come in and prior to paying for this and the other dues from Rotary International, can we ask members who have not yet paid their subs for this year to please do so as a matter of priority.   This can be done either by cheque or directly into the clubs operating account which is BSB 036035 Account no. 304015.

Magnifying MicroscopesAn exciting project which is the concept of WA Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley.   Lyn has a vision to see Magnifying Microscopes in the hands of all young primary school children to encourage them to investigate and discover

what there is surrounding them.   Dir. Rob Rohrlach is working with Lyn, John Clarke, CEO of the Science Teachers Assoc. of WA and Roy Hallam from the Water Corporation   to produce a manual for teachers to make the optimum use of the magnifying microscopes.  The Water Corporation is sponsoring the manuals as this project fits very nicely in with their ‘Water Wise Schools’ and they will also sponsor 30 microscopes for Lesmurdie Primary School where John Clarke’s wife is a teacher. The RC of Freshwater Bay is going to start off providing 30 magnifying microscopes for each of the Mt Claremont, Claremont Primary and Christ Church Grammar schools. It is envisaged that this will be sufficient for a class of students and they can be passed through the school a class at a time.  It is also hoped that this project will radiate out via other Rotary clubs to all schools in the State and even go nationwide.   Once the manuals are available, an official ‘launch’ will be organised with WA Chief Scientist Lyn Beazley, other VIPs, our Rotary Club and the schools.   It is also planned to obtain media coverage to really launch the project.

Wiluna Indigenous GSEPositive progress is happening with organising for a group of two Aboriginal elders and three health care workers to travel on a single focus Group Study Exchange team to Fiji to teach the Aboriginals how to help organise themselves into village life.  Alan Stewart has met with DG  Leanne Jaggs of D. 9920 in Auckland (Fiji is a part of this District) and now both D. 9920 and 9450 have completed the official paperwork and forwarded it to the Rotary Foundation for

this Exchange to proceed.  This is being funded from funds contributed to the Rotary Foundation.

There is also a mountain of knitted blankets, jumpers, scarves and beanies in the Collins’ garage awaiting transportation to Wiluna, which Alan will arrange on his return from New Zealand.

We Miss You EnidWe look forward to your return to the club in the very near future Enid, when you are fully recovered from your recent illness.

Rotary Foundation Address Monday, 16th NovemberOur meeting on 12th November has been cancelled and the Dr. Ken Collins Address will be the club’s official meeting for the week.   Members who have not yet registered but are planning to attend are asked to register immediately as numbers go into the caterers on Wednesday.  Please come along and learn more about our amazing foundation for peace, the Rotary Foundation from the current VC of the Rotary Foundation and Chairman of the Gates PolioPlus Challenge, Trustee John Germ.   Bill Hassell will be the MC at the function and the Burundi Peace Choir will perform during our main course.

Over 55s take to Facebook in NumbersSimone Carot Collins Rotary Club of Freshwater BayRotary Downunder

November 2009

You may have heard of “social networking” web sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, but dismissed them as something for kids to mess around on. But Rotary International has an official presence on each of these three sites, and the fastest growing demographic for Facebook – the biggest social networking site – is the over 55s?

Social networking sites and tools have been available online for a decade now, and in that time many have come and gone. Web sites such as Facebook have grown in popularity in recent years as mature offerings that have got it right and are here to stay.

There are tens of thousands of Rotarians, and many more Rotaractors, Interactors and alumni, who use Facebook regularly, to communicate with each other and with family and friends. Most Rotarians join Facebook at the invitation of a child, as an easy way to share photos and keep in touch, and soon see the power of the various applications on Facebook to promote Rotary fellowship and service.

A new fellowship – the Rotarians on Social Networks Fellowship (ROSNF), which is waiting for approval as an official fellowship – has been created to assist Rotarians and Rotaractors learn to use networks such as Facebook safely and effectively. More experienced users can provide assistance in how to share what you do in Rotary with a wider audience at no cost, simply by posting news, photos, web links, and videos in Facebook, and creating events, “fan” pages and groups that others, including those not on Facebook, can view.

It also gives you a chance to get to know your fellow Rotarians better on a more personal level – both those within your own club and

overseas . PDG Guz Goh from District 3400, Indonesia, explains, “Facebook is an amazing tool for Rotarians and Rotary. Its informality in communication is nice – through sharing photographs and videos, we too share their joy on birthdays, anniversaries, graduation of the children, etc. After a while you feel as though you’re friends that meet often.”

For help in getting started with social networking, visit www.rosnf.org.

Did you know? • Facebook has more than 250

million active users • more than 120 million log on

daily • 45 per cent are 26 years or

older • is available in 50 languages • sees more than 1 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photos) shared each week.

Rotarian up for CNN Hero of the YearBy Ryan Hyland  Rotary International News5 November 2009

Rotarian Budi Soehardi's devotion to bettering the lives of disadvantaged children in Indonesia earned him a spot as one of 10 finalists for the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year award .

Soehardi grew up in Central Java, Indonesia, where food and education were often scarce. At 53, it's his goal to help children avoid the hardships he had to endure.

With his wife, Peggy, Soehardi opened an orphanage in West Timor, Indonesia, in 2002 after learning about the horrible conditions faced by refugee children fleeing the violence on the eastern portion of   the island. The Roslin Orphanage has provided food, shelter, and education to more than 45 children, from newborns to teenagers.

"These children were suffering much the way I did, but worse," says Soehardi, a pilot and member of the Rotary E-Club of 3310, Singapore. "I feel very blessed in my life and wanted to give something back to those who needed it the most. My goal is to make the kids smile and happy. That's all."

Soehardi and his wife have three children, but he also treats those in the orphanage as his own. "We care for each child equally and consider them part of our family," he says. "I want to give them everything they need, no strings attached, just like my own children."

Soehardi's first brush with Rotary came as he coordinated relief efforts for victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Through donations f r o m f r i e n d s a n d leaders in the airline industry, he s e c u r e d

more than 130 tons of medical supplies, food, and clothes, which were delivered to affected villages by several Rotary clubs.

Impressed by the Rotarians' dedication to helping others, Soehardi decided to join Rotary.

"It's such a privilege being a Rotarian," he says. "Their spirit of togetherness and helpfulness is what inspired me to join. So many doors, all over the world, have been opened to me. My life is more beautiful with Rotary in it."

Soehardi's club helped furnish the orphanage with books, computers, and a projector. In 2006, a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant helped provide a vehicle for a mobile library program.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 19: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about becoming a Paul Harris Fellow or what a $1000 dollar contribution can do.

A US contribution of $1000 helps provide seven toilets in Sri Lanka. More than 2.6

billion people still lack access to proper sanitation. Most people in the developed world do not think about their sanitation system unless it is not working properly, but in Sri Lanka many people lack access to proper sanitation facilities.

The Rotary club of Ja-Ela Kandana, Sri Lanka partnering with the Rotary Club of Madras Northwest,

India took the matter into their own hands and obtained a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant to provide sanitation to a small community comprising 15 families.

They built 14 toilets providing the families with proper sanitation. This will insure a reduction in illness and increase the health and wellness of this community.

Rotarians meet the needs of the world by working through the Rotary Foundation.
