Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay, District 9450 1 New Horizons Summer Blood Challenge Update WA Police have been ‘Warne’d The Summer Blood Challenge’s new star Rotary WA brought the WA Police down to earth with a stunning donation effort in the third innings. In a spectacular display of increased donations, Rotary WA knocked another 11 donations onto the score board en route to the second- fastest half-century in the Summer Blood Challenge ending the innings on 36. Rotary WA’s chase was silenced once WA Police claimed a massive 22 donations in the first half of the innings, leaving them out in front on 71 just before tea. Rotary WA’s knock is likely to keep the pressure on the WA Police, as it gives its members a fighting chance to take the lead going into the fourth. Fine and mild conditions have been forecast for the start of the fourth innings, but the weather is due to heat up on Thursday, allowing both teams the chance to cool off whilst donating in one of our air-conditioned donor centres. There is still time for Rotary WA to put some more donations on the board and take the lead. If the WA Police drop their game, this could be a very close ending in February. Book your group in today and remember to bring your attendance form. For bookings contact Ina at Perth Donor Centre on 9421 2891 or call 13 14 95 or your nearest donor centre today. Announcement from the Rotary International President and the Chairman of The Rotary Foundation Dear Fellow Rotarians,This is another historic day for Rotary. Our organization was honored today to host philanthropist Bill Gates, Jr. at Rotary’s International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA. Speaking to 2009-2010 district governors-elect, Bill Gates, Jr. congratulated Rotarians on the success of the partnership between Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to raise funds for polio. To date, Rotarians have already committed more than US$60 million toward the original US$100 million Gates challenge grant awarded in November 2007.In recognizing Rotary’s impressive fundraising success and steadfast commitment to polio eradication, Gates announced today that his foundation has decided to increase its challenge grant by US$255 million – for a total of US$355 million. By accepting the increase, Rotary also accepts the challenge to raise an additional US$100 million in matching funds by 30 June 2012 and drives the combined Rotary and Gates Foundation partnership’s commitment to a total of US$555 million. All of the resulting US$555 million will be spent in support of immunization activities carried out by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in polio-affected countries. The initiative is spearheaded by Rotary, the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF. In another welcomed development today, the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) pledged £100 million (US$150 million) and the German government is giving an additional €100 million (US$130 million), both to the GPEI. Contributions from the U.K. and Germany are separate and will not count toward Rotary’s match of the Gates Foundation challenge grant. The infusion of funds is crucial if the world is to finally be rid of polio, a crippling, sometimes fatal disease that poses the highest risk to children. Although the initiative has reduced the number of polio cases by 99 percent over the past two decades, the wild poliovirus still persists in four countries -- Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan -- and imported cases from these endemic countries threaten other developing nations.Your continued participation in this effort is crucial to making it a success.  The Rotary International Board of Directors and the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation have unanimously agreed to accept this challenge grant to ensure the success of the PolioPlus program. Rotary and the Gates Foundation intend for their funding partnership to set an example for the rest of the world. We feel confident that this extraordinary partnership will serve as a catalyst for further donations from others to help us realize the dream of a polio-free world. When Rotary entered the fight against polio in 1985, we promised every child a world free from the threat of polio. We are almost there.   This funding agreement between Rotary and the Gates Foundation is a huge step forward, bringing us even closer to our goal.  Success is our only option.  Together we can End Polio Now.  For more information, please visit www.rotary.org.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 30: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about the PolioPlus Program.

Rotary launched its PolioPlus program in 1985 and contributions to the PolioPlus Fund continue to support the most essential components of polio eradication activities in our partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and UNICEF. With Rotary’s community-based network worldwide, Rotary is the volunteer arm of the global partnership dedicated to eradicating polio. By volunteering and supporting the PolioPlus program, Rotarians do the work of the world with every Polio vaccine administered!

M E S S A G E F R O M T H E C L U B P R E S I D E N T Dear Rotarians,

We are off to a flying start with both the first Board meeting and Committee meetings being held this past week, plus the initial steps have been taken for the Incorporation of the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay.

My personal thanks go to the outstanding ‘first’ Bulletin put together by our Secretary and Bulletin Editor Daniel Forsdyke, for a full turn out of the entire Board for our Board Meeting on 21st, the first project for the Club, with donations in kind from Roger Marston to Manna Industries, the small flags which Marija Jelavic arranged for us at no cost, a ‘Giving Thanks and Acknowledgement to Country’ from Mara Basanovic and of course we are deeply grateful each week to Roh Siriwardena for our venue and platter. One person to whom a great deal of work is falling right now is our Treasurer Rajah Senatharajah. Rajah, for the responsibility you have taken on addressing the various steps to set the Club on a firm foundation ‘financially’ with the Australian Tax Office requirements, arranging an Auditor etc., we appreciate how fortunate we are to have your services.

To each and every member, for your participation and contributions, I thank you, as you are contributing to make the world a better place.

Under the Directorship of Bryant Stokes, the Projects Committee enthusiastically discussed a number of potential projects and under the Directorship of Claire Forsdyke, I believe the Rotary Foundation / International Committee was also very productive. Rotary Clubs are extremely efficient at carrying out a number of different projects simultaneously – it is one of our strengths. A reason for this is to provide a

smorgasbord of projects through the various Avenues of Service (Club, Vocational, Community, International and Youth) to enable members to find projects with which they feel they’d really like to work.

Some projects are simple, perhaps just finding participants for various Rotary projects or programs eg. the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp, the Group Study Exchange Program or the Rotary Foundation Scholarships Program. Other projects take more time and effort to bring to fruition. It’s all about creating choice to involve and maintain the interest of our members.

This coming week two of our members, Toni James and Judith Dowson are going to lead us in a discussion on ‘Fundraising”, so please bring along your ideas to the meeting as we are keen to start drawing in funds so that the Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay can Make Dreams Read.

Yours in Rotary Service.Di Collins

Club ProjectsThe Rotary Foundation - International Committee has approved the following projects for Matching Grant Applications; Humidi-cribs for a hospital in Lagos, Nigeria; the Bizweni Centre for Disabled Children in South Africa and   Mana Industries 'Kids in the Kitchen' in Perth.

For the Humid-crib project we will be assisted by the the Rotary Clubs of Karrinyup and Morley, with the project being coordinated by Ken Collins.

The Rotary Club of Sacramento in the United States are keen to join with us in a Matching Grant for the Manna Industries project, for which we have received a "wish list" from Manna Industries.

Proposed ‘Giving Thanks and Acknowledgement to Country’“For food in a world where many walk in hunger,                                 For peace and safety in a world where many walk in fear,

For family, friends and fellowship in a world where many walk alone,

For dreams and opportunity in a world where many walk without hope,

We give thanks.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of this land we share and pay respects to the elders past, present and future for they hold the traditions, culture and wisdom of the Noongar people.”

Please forward you feedback on this proposal to President Di, before the Induction Night Dinner.

National Immunisation Day in NigeriaMy fellow Rotarians, I am in the process of planning a National Immunisation Day (NID) in Nigeria and invite Rotarians whom wish to encounter a hands on experience of a life time, immunising the children of Nigeria against Polio. This is our promise to the children of the world, a world with out Polio.I’m in touch with a PDG from District 9110 and the Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Vitoria Island East, whom will assist our team in planning and implementing the NID.I have been assured that at all times there will be no safety issues, as our team will not be exposed to any volatile areas. Remembering that the Nigerians know of Rotary and of the great work we do eradicating Polio, and they all want the same as we do, to see their children are protected against the scourge of Polio.Nigeria accounts for 79% of the global wild Poliovirus type 1 and 10% of the wild Poliovirus type 3 cases. Nigeria accounts for 90% of all Polio cases in Africa.Polio is a PAIN to the children of the world and it is in Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Nigeria. The dates for the NID are 21st to the 24th of March 2009, the total time we will be away will be decided by the team. I would expect it to be 10 days in Nigeria. Home stay could be possible but if not, they will negotiate good rates for us in suitable hotels. Internal transport will be provided by the Rotarians.I have received cost’s on flights with Emirates, from Perth / Dubai to Lagos and return at $4,100 each person. Glenys and I have led several teams away, and have found that 20 Rotarians is a better number to travel with, therefore we are after 9 couples to travel with us.

My Rotary friends if you wish to be involved in this very satisfying and fulfilling experience of a lifetime, and would like more information please contact PDG Ron Geary on 0429 001 692 or e-mail [email protected]
