Property Description

New Directions Adolescent Services is located in a rural area of Sonoma County on several acres of land. The main building has been a school site since approximately 1877. Currently, there are two classrooms, referred to as "Venture" and "Compass", serving 23 boys and girls receiving special education and related services. At least an acre of land is available as certified organic farming land and was previously a garden. There are several outdoor patios and open areas for sports activities including instruction in Tai Chi.

Commendations

New Directions Adolescent Services (NDAS) is commended for:

Providing counseling and guidance support to students upon request.

Exemplary activities that show dedication to providing access and tracking student success in achieving high school

credits.

The middle and high school transcripts are comprehensive and developed according to thorough procedures.

Three students graduated from their home high school last year.

Comprehensive, thoughtful policies and procedures regarding criteria for every certification area, such as prohibition of

sexual harassment, care of student records and procedures for record keeping and documentation of high school credit.

Exemplary instruction found in classrooms that are orderly and organized.

NDAS teachers quietly and astutely announce the successful students or issue alerts of systemic consequences for

non-positive student behavior such as not completing work. All students are continuously encouraged to complete their

work.

Student learning is well supported. To request individual instructional assistance, students take their wooden plaque

that has their name carved and place it into a basket on the teachers’ desk. Their needs are addressed within a few

minutes.

The comprehensive positive behavioral support program that is well known to every student and all staff is thoroughly

integrated. The rules for implementing the “Intensity and Consequences Continuum” are well known and demonstrated

throughout the day by students, teachers, counselors and administrators.

Daily Report Cards noting a grade for each subject and on-task behavior are sent home every day.

NDAS collaborates with the Healdsburg school district transition coordinator who offers lessons in transition and work

experience programs and credits through a special grant to every nonpublic school student enrolled at NDAS.

Unique field trips coordinated by a group that specializes in providing environmental experiences to students with

special needs are offered at least annually. Photos depicting student experiences such as rafting and sea kayaking are

displayed in the cafeteria.
