As my first visit to Haiti in the role of International Manager comes to a close, I find myself deeply inspired by the dedication of the staff and Chalice partners in both Haiti North and Haiti South Sponsor Sites. Our programming in Haiti is moving forward through the es- tablishment of parent committees, the Houses for Haiti Project in Haiti South and a new Sub-Site in the town of Jeremie. The passion and determination of community leaders and parents is clearly evident as they help define current needs and how Chalice can help. While the core sponsorship pro- grammme will continue to focus on education, nutrition, and medical support, our desire is to expand the education component with the goal of empowering parents through their own skills development such as reading and writing, organizational planning, agriculture, and micro- finance. The next phase of the Houses for Haiti project will start in the coming months with the construction of another 20 homes in Haiti South. As I visited the homes built in the latest phase, the pride of the recipient families and the immense gratitude for the support of Chalice was contagious. These families can now live in solidly constructed homes. The establishment of a new Sub-Site in Jeremie will also begin in the coming months, with some of the sponsored children attending Centre de Formation Saint Jean Bosco. In addition to offering traditional classes, this Centre will also provide trades training in areas such as ma- sonry, sewing, weaving, and con- struction; all skills that are in great need in Haiti. As my first visit to Haiti in the role of International Manager comes to a close, I find myself deeply inspired by the dedication of the staff and Chalice partners in both Haiti North and Haiti South Sponsor Sites. Our programming in Haiti is moving forward through the es-tablishment of parent committees, the Houses for Haiti Project in Haiti South and a new Sub-Site in the town of Jeremie. The passion and determination of community leaders and parents is clearly evident as they help define current needs and how Chalice can help. While the core sponsorship pro-grammme will continue to focus on education, nutrition, and medical support, our desire is to expand the education component with the goal of empowering parents through their own skills development such as reading and writing, organizational planning, agriculture, and micro-finance.

In addition to offering traditional classes, this Centre will also provide trades training in areas such as ma-sonry, sewing, weaving, and con-struction; all skills that are in great need in Haiti.

Chalice is making a difference in Haiti and a direct difference in the lives of sponsored children. There is much work to do and still a long road to travel, but the love of Christ shines through the eyes and smiles of those we help.

Legacy GiftsIn the spirit of gratitude Chalice has established a legacy recognition programme called Chalice Faithful Sowers as a way of saying “Thank You” to our charitable donors who have included and confirmed a legacy gift to Chalice in their Will. This programme provides a way for us to show our love and appre-ciation to donors who have provided a lasting legacy. These gifts will produce a harvest which generations will reap tomorrow, thanks to the seeds sown today. If Jesus cut open an apple, would He just see the seeds within or would He see the potential of the seedlings that will sprout? Jesus not only sees what is in front of him, but sees the potential of how it will change the world. After all, anyone can count the seeds in an apple, but only God can count the apples in a seed. There is nothing more world-changing than the potential of a child. As we work together to remove the seemingly insurmountable obsta-cles imposed by extreme poverty, we are changing the world one child, one family, and one community at a time, preparing the way for God’s bountiful harvest. If you are an unknown Chalice Faithful Sower who has already listed Chalice with a bequest or other future gift, please let us know. We would appreciate the opportunity to say thank you and to extend an invitation for you to join our Chalice Faithful Sowers Society. Together, we can be partners in sowing the seeds of tomorrow by the legacy we leave today.

Hope for the Children of Tondo

The stench of garbage hangs in the hot, humid air. Adults, children and animals rummage through the waste, absently batting at the buzzing flies. It’s hard to take a deep breath and even harder to compre-hend that people live here amongst the piles of trash. This is the reality that children in Tondo live every day. They have no concept of a world without garbage, without having to scavenge through the discarded piles for a few scraps they can sell or for something to eat. They live in a ramshackle shack and if they’re lucky they haven’t been pulled into a gang life for survival.

It is in this landscape that Tondo, Chalice’s newest Sponsor Sub Site, was opened in the fall of 2013. We can only imagine the reactions when the first children heard they had been sponsored! The first sparks of hope igniting amid the sparkle of new possibilities and dreams for the future. “It is the sponsors that give ev-eryone hope,” explains Fr. Patrick Cosgrove, President of Chalice. “Each day has its own difficulties but if you’re there to listen, support and encourage while providing some of the basic needs then you have a hope, you have a chance…because if you’re not there, there is no hope.” Realistically we know that poverty will always exist in the world, but in responding to Jesus’ call to serve the poor we are making a difference and spreading hope where there was no hope before. If through edu-cation, attention and support we can lift just a few of these children out of the cycle of poverty then we have success. To sponsor a child from Tondo please visit us at chalice.ca or call 1-800-776-6855.

A New ChapterI have always felt blessed and privi-leged to be able to spend time in the communities where we work with the children and families that benefit from Chalice sponsorship. Over the past 8 years I’ve shared some of my travels and experiences with you in my role as International Manager for Latin America. In that time, Chalice has increased its total number of sponsorships by almost 75% and in Latin America specifically, we opened 10 new Sponsor Sites and increased sponsorship in the region by 135%. Naturally as an organization over this period we have also matured, both internally and with our partners inter-nationally. As I transition into my new role within Chalice as Senior International Manager I’d like to take this opportu-nity to share a few “memories of the heart” that I will take forward with me from my unforgettable and formative years working with our Latin Ameri-can sites. • Iavoiddescribingour beneficiaries as “poor” – while they may not have as much as we do materially, they are wealthy in ways that we cannot imagine. I’ve met many people who have little materially that are full of joy, generosity and gratitude. • Formanychildren, knowingthere’s someone outside their community far away in Canada who cares for them, is equally important a benefit as the material assistance they receive through Chalice. • TimeandtimeagainIhavevisited children that live in very humble homes and if they have received a photo/card/stickers/letter etc. from their sponsor, without exception those items will be kept in a safe “place of honour” in that home. • Thekindandgeneroussupporters I’ve had the pleasure of meeting affirm my pride as a Canadian Catholic. • God’sloveandspiritis bountiful throughout the “Chalice Family” around the world. • WhatIknowforsureisthat Chalice sponsorship changes lives … I’ve followed children who have grown up to become professionals and leaders in their communities; empowered parents who, with “a hand up” from Chalice, become able to sustain their own family; and communities with increased and enhanced infrastructure that are effectively addressing their issues and problems. It has been a gift to work closely with Regional Director, Patricia Bozo de Duran; the team in the Regional Office in La Paz, Bolivia; and all Sponsor Site Directors and their teams in Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Peru and Guatemala. Their commitment, faith and abilities never cease to amaze me. Under the capable leadership of Douglas Es-tanga, incoming International Man-ager for Latin America I am optimistic that great things will continue in the region. Settling into my new position, I look forward to visiting our Regional Offices and Sponsor Sites in other parts of the world to meet the team members, children and families who are also treasured members of our “Chalice Family”.

Help Us Keep Costs LowAs you may have heard the price of postage is going to dramatically in-crease as of March 31, 2013. In an announcement made on December 11, Canada Post revealed the cost of bulk purchased stamps (books or coils) will increase to $0.85 per stamp and individual stamp purchases will cost $1. Chalice is committed to keeping our overhead costs as low as possible, so that we can continue to send the majority of funds collected to help those in need. As a result of the new postage charges, we will be looking at new ways to save. Here is how you can help:

1) Update your address: Have you recently moved? Chaliceisworkingtoensurewehaveyourcorrectaddressonfile. 2) Automatic Withdrawal: Do you send cheques in the mail? Youcansetupanautomaticbankwithdrawalforyourpayment. This will cut down on both our cost to mail your invoice and your costtomailusyourpayment. 3) This newsletter: Did you know you can sign up to receive this newsletter electronically through your email? By working together we can continue to keep costs as low as possible. Thank you so much for your support through the years. God Bless!

Beyond Our Borders

Images of the devastation that Ty-phoon Haiyan brought to the Philip-pines were broadcasted around the world. Though hurricanes are not unusual for Filipinos, the destruction Haiyan brought was record setting. In response, churches across Canada took up special collections, while Chalice received over $750,000 from our generous supporters. Mr. Ambrose Pereira, International Manager for the Chalice Sites in Asia, flew to meet with our partners, assess the damage and determine how and where Chalice would help. As numer-ous government agencies, charities and NGO’s strove to bring assistance where chaos reigned, it became evident that urgent immediate as-sistance would need to be followed by more long term remedies. Espe-cially challenging is when there is no

legal ownership of the land on which rebuilding is needed. Over the next several months our newsletter will report on our progress. In the interim, please remember all the families in their recovery efforts. I would like to ask a special favour from our sponsors and donors. As you will read, or already know, postage is taking another large price increase. To reduce expenses, we would like to communicate as much as possible via email. If you have an Internet connection would you consider receiving news-letter and other communications by email? Please send us your current e-mail address. And while I am addressing costs, I will take this opportunity to inform you that the cheapest method of do-nation is by preauthorized withdrawal

from your financial institution. Credit cards and monthly cheques have the highest processing costs by far. You can convert your method of payment by simply sending in a voided cheque or pre authorized debit form from your bank. I hope you enjoy the stories in this edition of our newsletter. Though they often make us aware of the sorrow of poverty, they also proclaim a spirit of courage, solidarity and thanksgiving that fills our hearts with admiration and joy. Finally, I would like to thank all our donors that bought a gift through our Christmas catalogue. The gifts bring great joy to the many families you sup-ported in this way.

Father Pat Cosgrove, President

I can still recall where I was sitting in the school gymnasium when Sister Rosemary Ryan showed us slides of her mission to Peru. My grade 5 self was riveted by the images displayed from the old slide and projector reel. At that moment I started to make plans for my own mission, which took place 34 years later. On February 8, 2013, our Canadian team left for a two week mission to Kumba-konam, India. Visiting village after village, sponsor chil-dren and their families wel-comed us by placing oil on our foreheads, flower garlands around our necks and shawls around our shoulders. They were so poor econom-ically but rich in spirit, faith and feel-ings of gratitude. They sang, danced and played the drums as they escorted us to our village meeting places. I was happy to present sessions on effective group meetings to the village leaders and on counselling and leadership to the staff. They were all open and eager to learn. It is very difficult to describe the love reciprocated during our time together. Powerful, humbling, spiri-

tual, and elemental are some of the words that come to mind. Chalice delivers their programme using the principles of empowerment and I was blessed to see the beauty of this model in action. Sponsorship al-lows children to stay in school and re-

ceive a good education, empowers families, and im-proves their health and wellness. It provides the people with a hand up. India was an experi-ence of the heart, mind, body and soul and the realization of a lifelong

dream… What is your dream?

Please meet Mrs. Jolly Mabunga. Jolly is 40 years old, and is married with 3 boys. The young-est child is 6 years old and has Cerebral Palsy. Mrs. Mabunga started a business which is a

In 2011 Chaplain Rob Shaan of Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School in Regina called Chalice with an idea that four high schools in the area would get together and sponsor 20 children from Haiti. The premise of the initiative is that the students and staff of the Regina schools would sponsor 20 eight year old children from our Haiti North Sponsor Site and follow their progress for 10 years. This has proven to garner loving relationships between the chil-dren in Haiti and their brothers and sisters in Regina. It has also been financially successful, as the school has contributed over $105,000 thus far to aid the chil-dren and families in Haiti. Recently we received another call from Chaplain Rob. The peo-ple of Regina have again answered the call to serve all in need, by of-fering to sponsor 20 children from the Philippines. The generosity of the staff, students, and admin-istration of the Regina schools is beyond measure as they have fun-damentally changed the lives of the children and families in Haiti, and now will transform lives in the Philippines. The 20 children will come from an area of the Philip-pines called Tondo. Tondo is Ma-nila’s most densely populated lo-cality. There are more than 70,000 residents per square kilometre. The people in Regina along with Chalice will help provide the basic needs of nutrition, schooling, and health care for God’s children living in abject poverty. I encour-age anyone reading this to please go to www.chalice.ca to find out more about our new Sponsor Site in Tondo. We would like to thank everyone involved in the fundraising efforts in the Regina schools. We invite anyone who wishes to start an initiative such as this in your school or parish, to please call 1-800-776-6855. Ext. 201.

Harumi Flores Montalvo and Ciera DeSilva are interning at Chalice after a 6-month internship at Centro Esperanza in Chiclayo, Peru. They are completing 9-month CIDA-funded In-ternational Youth Internships as coor-dinated through the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation (ACIC).

Here they share their experiences about the newly established youth programming in Chiclayo.

Centro Esperanza launched Project Chiclayo (PC) when it became a Chalice Sponsor Site in 2003. The methodology used is based on the ‘Learning Through Play’ program from the Toronto-based Hincks-Dell-crest Centre, which focuses on young children’s growth and development. Because programming for youth, who had started in the Project was lacking,

youth sessions were incorporated in August 2013 as a space where age-ap-propriate themes could be explored. As interns, we began accompanying these sessions and were able to take part in the very first encounter where all 73 youth in PC met. The hope was to find out their interests, what they wanted to see come out of the Project and how we could accomplish this. A number of topics came flooding, from more in-depth, age-appropriate

knowledge about sexual health to out-ings around the city; all of which have been carried out thus far. Furthermore, this meeting allowed them to get to know and accompany each other and truly see that there are others, within or outside their com-munities, with similar challenges, in-terests, strengths, and opportunities. They brainstormed to share what they have experienced as part of PC. What success have they seen? What op-portunities have resulted? Have these expanded beyond the walls of PC? Potential is infinite. One shy little boy began participating in the PC music program, became involved in his school music program, and is now a music teacher. Imagine the growth within this one boy; finding yourself in front of 73 individuals full of prom-ise, bringing that out. You can imagine how we felt going home that day.

Potential is Infinite
