It was Grade 4. I had talked one time too many out of turn and Miss Watson made me stay in after school. (Do teachers do this anymore?) I was sitting quietly sighing at

my desk. (You recall the ones with an ink well at the top right corner?) Miss White walked into the classroom with a cheery, “Hello, dear!” And I replied with a feeling-sorry-for-myself, “Hi Miss White.” No sooner had I spoken did I hear her icy response. “I wasn’t talking to you!”

It was the first moment in my young life that I was jarred to the realization… I am not the centre of the universe. It was a painful realization, and one it’s take the rest of my life to fully grasp.

The Bible is pretty clear about this notion. It says that Jesus Christ is Lord. It says that my job is to love him with all my heart soul, mind, and strength. That pretty much displaces me from centre stage. But what about second place? Can I keep that, at least?

Nope. There’s this little part about other people. Like loving them as I love myself. And if that weren’t enough, there’s a whole pile of verses to clarify what that means.

• Honor one another. Romans 12:10

• Stop passing judgment on one another. Romans 14:13

• Accept one another. Romans 15:7

• Bear with one another. Ephesians 4:2

• Forgive one another. Ephesians 4:32

This issue introduces the emphasis we’re following at Calvary over the month of February. It’s about oneanothering. John Ratz writes about it in an article of the same name. In “Spiritual Victory,” I share about PrayerWall, a way that we can pray for one another (James 5:16). And in the etcetera page you can take a look at 30 practical ways you can love one another.

Turns out, it’s not all about you… but that’s what makes life worth living!

Problem: how to get Christ-followers together from a multitude of churches across a wide spectrum in order to demonstrate the true unity of the body of Christ.

Solution: Worship! We may all have different ideas about how to do church, what exactly to believe, how to interpret the Bible. But we all share in common an earnest desire to worship Jesus Christ, King of Kings and Lord of Lords!

This takes place annually in our part of the world at the Waterloo Annual Regional Worship Night, taking place this year here at Calvary on Saturday, February 23, and at Waterloo Pentecostal Assembly on March 3. These two evenings of “Worship Across the Generations” will assemble worship pastors and youth worship leaders from around Waterloo Region to lead us in worship.

The event is put on by the Waterloo Region Worship Network. It’s a gathering of Worship

leaders from over 30 churches in the area. From the outset the vision has been, “Different churches, different denominations, different people worshipping together and praying together, for our region and each other.”

It all began with a group of four leaders who gathered in December of 2002 to share about worship in their churches, successes, frustrations, and how worship leaders specifically could support one another in prayer. Out of that meeting has come a series of dynamic evenings of worship that are breaking barriers and inviting the Spirit of God to do a deep work in the whole Waterloo Region.

So, the invitation has come to you as well. Come worship with us. A free will offering will be taken.

siesta, back to work ‘til the sun goes down and call it a day. Remember that they don’t have the short winter days of Canada in the Middle East; the days are pretty consistently twelve hours all year.

Bridging the ancient and the Present. How do we live out this community model in a world that pushes us toward isolation? Minivans come with cup holders so we can eat as a family as we travel from one activity to another. We can press a button in our car to open the garage door, perish the thought that we actually encounter our neighbours!

The only way we have a chance at living out the biblical imperative to living in community is to be intentional about it. We must choose to put things in our calendar before  our calendar

dictates to us what we are going to be doing. Hmmm, setting time aside for relationships... not as easy as we would think - even for the people-people. Relationships take time, lots of time.

the One another ChallengeIf we were to make it our priority to live out the one another’s of the New Testament here is some

of what that would include: love one another, serve one another, honour one another, forgive one another, encourage one another, confess to one another, accept one another, challenge one another, submit to one another... there are about 50 “one anothers” to live out!

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that living out the one anothers is an easy thing to do. It is actually quite difficult. At its core, living a one another lifestyle requires self-sacrifice.

Small groups are the vehicle, not the destination.

The destination is what has been called Biblical Community. A group of individuals who live out the biblical description of what a community of believers looks like. Specifically, the New Testament imperatives we refer to as the “one-anothers.”

One of the uniqueness’s of Christianity is that it is a relational movement. The challenge we

face is how to implement the model of the New Testament in the 21st century.

Small groups have proven that they are the best vehicle for us to live out the one anothers of the New Testament in our 21st century pace of life. The destination is living in a biblical community.

During a job interview awhile back, I was asked what I thought the next movement in church discipleship world would be. We had been talking in the

context of Small Group ministry. How would you answer that question? The pastor interviewing me believed in small groups as a vehicle, but understood that every vehicle has a lifespan. I’ve got some ideas of what could be around the corner, but I firmly believe that, whatever it is, it will exist in the context of relationships.

the emphasis on relationships. In our culture, we start the day with an alarm clock. Our feet hit the ground and we start running as long as the sun is up, and then some. Then we fall into bed until the alarm goes off and we get back on the tread mill called life.

The culture in which the New Testament was written placed a high priority on relationships.

In the first century, the day started with a meal, a community focused event. When the sun went down, friends and family would gather for a meal. They started the day with a relational event, then they slept, they worked last.

Even the rhythm of their day was drastically different. Get to work as the sun is coming up. Take a long lunch, maybe even an afternoon

Ministry

8 Network | February 2013 | calvarycambridge.com

The search is finally over. After months of looking for someone to lead Children’s Ministry, Calvary has hired Joanna Ratz as its new children’s pastor.

With a deep love and passion for children, Joanna says she is looking forward to her new ministry role.

“I have always had a desire to serve God in the lives of children and I love to see children grow in their love for God,” she says.

Joanna goes on to say that a solid children’s ministry in a church is important. “Children are the future church leaders. What we put in their hearts and minds now will impact the future generations for Christ!”

Born in England into a family of three older brothers, Joanna moved to Canada when she was six-years-old. Most of her childhood and teenage years were spent growing up on Vancouver Island.

In 1989, Joanna married John and began ministry in the Vancouver area and then moved onto Alberta.

Four years later the couple moved again, but this time to the United States; first to Detroit and then settling in Philadelphia. However, the winds of the north would come calling—calling the Ratzs home to Canada, with John accepting the executive pastor position with Calvary.

But this time their move wouldn’t include their entire family. “Our two daughters, Cherise and Charissa, who were born in Canada, still live in the U.S. where they are attending post-secondary school, and Craig, who is our only American-born child, moved with us to Cambridge as he is still in high school.”

After arriving in Cambridge, Joanna would

come to church on Sunday as a worshipper, not knowing what plans God had in store for her. However, what she did know was since high school she had served in children’s ministry in one capacity or another.

“When my children were young I was a stay-at-home mom, but I also stayed involved in ministry as a volunteer/leader. After being home for 10 years, I returned to work as a teacher and part-time children’s pastor for the church we were a part of in Michigan. After a short time, the children’s pastor role became full time.”

When the family moved to Philadelphia, Joanna says she joined the staff at their church as the part-time children’s pastor for the early childhood ministries. While doing this, she also worked full time as the school director at a private Christian school that was a part of the church they were serving at.

“I am looking forward to working with the Children’s Ministry teams. I enjoy working with people to move a ministry forward to realize the potential that God has for us.”

Joanna, in partnership with the children’s ministry teams at Calvary, will consistently be looking at what we are doing and our effectiveness to the children of Calvary and also of Cambridge.

When asked what her dreams are for Calvary’s children’s ministry, she says, “I want Calvary to be a church that has an amazing, thriving, healthy ministry to children! I want us to be known for striving for excellence in all that we do for kids. I want Calvary kids growing every time they step through our doors in their love for Christ. I want Calvary kids to feel loved and accepted in our church!”

Disciplines

Resources. When ya got ‘em, you hardly notice them. When they’re missing, you’re sunk. At the height of World War Two, Britain was hanging by a thread,

her resources completely spent. The Americans were resisting the pull into the war, but Winston Churchill’s anguished cry for arms came to President Roosevelt, “Give us the tools and we will finish the job.”

We, too, are in a pitched battle, the Bible says, waged in the heavenly realms. It’s far enough from us, that often we’re unaware of its consequences, but it has very real effects in our lives. And we, too, need resources.

We usually know what we ought to do, but doing it doesn’t come so easily. We all know that Bible reading and prayer are staple disciplines for the Christian life, but let’s face it, many of us live with a perpetual low-level guilt about this. Like our diets, we like fast-food and junk, and we’re not getting the nourishment our souls need for healthy growth.

That’s why at Calvary, we’re trying to resource God’s people with tools to get the job done! Two of them will become a feature of our congregational life this year. One is the You’ve Got the Time! Bible Reading Plan, the other is the PrayerWall. Both offer simple practical ways to freshen up your spiritual life and experience a new dimension of growth!

“Give us the tools and we will finish the job.” Winston Churchill

You’ve Got the time!Studies show that 65% of Christ-followers have never read the entire New Testament! In fact, 58% of the U.S. adult population will never read another book after high school (we, of course, are far more literate in Canada!). In a survey of more than 500 pastors, 47% cited “lack of time” as the main reason more Christians don’t read the Bible.

Teaming with the Canadian Bible Society, we are offering absolutely free, an incredible resource to optimize your time and help you to engage the Bible. It’s a 40-day listening program called “You’ve Got the Time!” On a CD are 40 mp3 recordings of the Bible complete with dramatization and music. It’s an effort to make God’s Word as accessible as possible.

Download them to your laptop. Put them on your iPod. Or listen to them on-line at calvarycambridge.com. In 28 minutes a day, you can listen to the entire New Testament in 40 days. If you commute anywhere outside of Cambridge, this is a highly achievable goal! But if you’re like me and prefer smaller doses, we have placed the entire set of readings on-line so that you can

Spiritual Victory:

resourcing God’s PeopleBy David Courey

listen at your own pace, or try the 80-, or 120-day (10 minutes a day!) excursion.

At the end of the first 40 days on March 3rd, we will take up an offering for the Canadian Bible Society. Calvary will have the opportunity to help provide this same dramatized format in the Inuktitut language for more than 30 thousand of our First peoples in Nunavut. Pretty exiting!

PrayerWallAnother typical problem in our spiritual battle is simply taking time to pray. After we’ve said “God bless mommy, and daddy and all the missionaries”… well, what else do we do?

A simple prayer pattern is the acostic ACTS: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication. Often we don’t know who needs prayer and what those needs might be. But PrayerWall offers an elegant, and simple solution.

Online at calvarycambridge.com we have a feature that will allow you to pray immediate realtime needs. People have posted prayer requests there, and you can pray fro them, and with a simple click, you can send them an e-mail telling them someone has prayed for their need! What an encouragement that could be for a person with a real need!

Of course this only works if you’re willing to share some of your needs, which you can do anonymously, or by giving your name, and being open to have someone click on your request!

This should offer real grist for your prayers, and the possibility of blessing someone else who needs the encouragement of knowing you cared!

“Give us the tools and we will do the job!” Well, here are a couple of resources to get us started. Let’s get in the trenches and win the war!

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
