Christmas Remembered Christmas Remembered is a holiday celebration in

music and story. It all takes place at Nelson United Church (corner of Josephine and Silica) on Friday, December 14 at 7 pm. Music is provided by the Jubi-late Deo Handbell Choir and Nelson United Church Chancel Choir directed by John Pengelly as well as the Bon Accord String Ensemble directed by Stephanie Judy. Stories and memoirs will be read by Sean Arthur Joyce, Marg Stacey, Greg Stacey, and Eileen Delehanty Pearkes. Th e audience is invited to join in carol singing along with the choir, musicians, and readers and the whole event will be followed by tea and coff ee in the church hall.

Works by Handel, Bach and Corelli on Saturday December 8, 7:30 pm and Sunday December 9, 2:30 pm at Nelson’s Capitol Th eatre.

Imagine: four professional soloists backed by a 60-voice choir and a chamber orchestra, performing a program of divine classical choral music. Every few years, Kathleen Neudorf, musical director of the Nelson Choral Society, pulls out all the stops. Th is year the choir is joining forces with the Selkirk Chamber Orchestra, led by Wendy Herbison, for a December concert featuring Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Coronation Mass with works by Handel, Bach and Corelli.

Th e soloists for the Mozart piece are among the area’s fi nest vocalists. Soprano soloist, Hungarian-born Noemi Kiss, performed in Handel’s Messiah with the Nelson Choral Society three years ago. Alto Audrey Bisset won kudos for her role in the opera Khaos last year. Tenor David Herbison also performed in Handel’s Messiah and baritone Kevin Armstrong recently directed and acted in Jesus Christ Superstar.

Mozart’s Coronation Mass is joyful, uplift ing and celebratory. Mozart wrote the piece in 1779, and it has the form, balance and elegance characteristic of the music of this time period.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and students.

Selkirk Wilderness Commences 2012/13 Operations

On December 1st, 2012 Selkirk Wilderness Skiing of Meadow Creek, BC, will commence its thirty-eighth year of operation on Meadow Mountain. The upcoming season will mark the twenty-eighth anniversary of The Signage Plan, a community and government sponsored agreement which provides closure of the snowcat trails and skiing terrain tenured to Selkirk Wilderness Skiing by the Province of British Columbia. The Signage Plan is supported by HeliCat Canada, the BC Snowmobile Federation, the Canada West Ski Areas Association, the Nelson Snogoers, the provincial government, and the residents of Kaslo and the Lardeau Valley. It includes the posting of signs which identify snowmobile access routes in and out of the “Back Meadows”, the area designated for public winter use on Meadow Mountain during the closure, and signs which identify the snowcat trails closed to the public from December 1st until mid April. Selkirk Wilderness Skiing is committed to continued winter access to the area of traditional public use in the “Back Meadows”. Snowmobilers, skiers and snowboarders from our region have cooperated well with The Signage Plan over the years, and we truly appreciate the assistance from local users in educating visitors from beyond the Kootenays about the plan. Compliance

with the signage is critical to our continued and safe operation: the snowcat trails are steep, winding, and narrow, and many are “one way” only. Indiscriminate use of the snowcat trails and the skiing terrain could result in a serious collision between a snowmobile and a skier, or a snowmobile and a snowcat, or other mishaps. Selkirk Wilderness Skiing was the first snowcat skiing operation of its kind in the world. We employ many local people and generate many economic benefits for the community. The support of our community has contributed significantly to these local benefits, and to the safety and enjoyment of our guests and other winter users of Meadow Mountain. The signage will be removed in early to mid April and a notice regarding the exact date will be posted in the Nelson Star and the Pennywise in mid March. A reading of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a fundraiser for the Nelson Food Cupboard Society on Sunday December 16 at the Nelson United Church at 7:30 (doors open at 7 pm.

Experience the spirit of Christmas and the transforma-tion of Dickens’ Ebenezer Scrooge in the annual dramatic reading of Th e Christmas Carol. With its beginnings in 1843, Charles Dickens’ tale has become a tradition, evok-ing the true meaning of Christmas to audiences world-wide. Readers David Boyd, Lucas Myers, Glenn Hicks, Jane Sinclair, and Anne DeGrace are joined by Host May-or John Dooley and Th e Heritage Harmony Barbershop Chorus at 7:30 pm on Sunday, December 16 (doors open at 7 pm). Admission is by donation (donations over $20 will receive a tax receipt). All proceeds benefi t the Nelson Food Cupboard, in true Dickens fashion. Th ere will also be a food donation box at the door. Aft er the event, guests will be invited to meet the readers at a reception hosted by the Nelson United Church’s Women’s Group.

• International Day Against Violence Against Women – November 25;

• International Women Human Rights Defender Day – November 29;

• International AIDS Day – December 1; • International Day of Persons with Disabilities –

December 3;• International Volunteer Day - December 5;• National Day of Remembrance (of Montreal Mas-

sacre) Action on Violence Against Women – Decem-ber 6; and

• International Human Rights Day - December 10. Th ese dates were chosen in order to symbolically link

the awareness initiatives around violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights on a global scale.

Th e campaign raises awareness about gender-based vio-lence as a violation of human rights; strengthens local work around preventing violence against women; provides a forum inspiring new prevention strategies; demonstrates the solidarity of women around the world organizing to prevent gender-based violence; and creates tools that groups can use to enlighten governments about violence against women which in turn inspires those governments to implement policy to eliminate violence against women.

Over 4100 organizations in about 172 countries have participated in the 16 Days of Activism Campaign since its inception in 1991.

It’s Panto Time At Th e CapitolTh e Capitol Th eatre proudly presents the 25th Annual

Christmas Pantomime this year featuring Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of Buskerville from Th ursday, November 29 to Sunday, December 2. Th e story is very loosely based on the original Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Basker-ville, one of the most famous and admired detective stories ever written. Published in 1901 and 1902, it appeared in nine monthly installments in Th e Strand magazine.

Th e Capitol Th eatre Christmas Pantomime is a Nelson tradition that features a cast comprised of local commun-ity players ranging in age from 6 to 60. Th is year’s chorus features experienced Panto actors like Kendall McPher-son, Liz and Soleil Babcock and Mary Anderson, plus fi rst-timers like Kaj, Dylan and Oliver Gyr. “One of the things that makes this project so much fun is the com-bination of actors from all ages and levels of experience,” says director, Laurie Jarvis. “We’ve had entire families in the cast together.”

Once again gracing the Panto stage are Bruce Ormond, who brings his own keen intellect to the role of the amaz-ing Sherlock Holmes, Dustin Cantwell as the bumbling but warm-hearted Dr. Watson, and Craig Korth playing Mrs. Hudson, the very hairy housekeeper. Panto audiences are always invited to participate in the show and this year is no exception. Children and adults alike will delight in singing along, talking back and letting Professor Mariarty, played by Lisel Forst, know exactly what they think of her evil antics.

“I wrote this year’s script with Nelson in mind,” says Jar-vis. “We poke fun at a few local issues for sure.” Panto-mimes are designed for a multi-age audience, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy, from physical comedy and one-liners, to all the singing and dancing that are traditionally seen in this type of show.

Th is is the Capitol Th eatre’s 25th Christmas Pantomime. Jarvis explains: “It’s a Nelson tradition. Th ere’s no better way to kick start the holiday season than to come out to the Panto with your family and boo, cheer and laugh along with your fellow Nelsonites onstage. I love it.”
