The Nottingham e-Learning Centres offer an exciting and comprehensive range of courses. This course directory offers a selection, but do get in touch with us to discuss your specific requirements. All courses are open to teaching practitioners, teachers and teaching assistants and, unless otherwise stated, are open to all Key Stages. Please note that some events are listed in more than one section if relevant to other subjects. Any of the courses in the Skills Section can be adapted to meet your subject and departmental needs.

Learn how Apple’s intuitive iLife suite can be used as a tool for enriching the curriculum with applications dedicated to photo-editing, video production, music recording and composition, Podcasting, web-design, e-portfolios and DVD authoring. • Assessing pupils’ performance (APP) and voting sets

in the classroom

• FREE software!

• Making the most of your interactive whiteboard

Make the most of your IWB to enhance teaching and better engage learners. The courses will be offered at different levels to suit your level of confidence (see booking sheet for details). We’ll be looking at the art of presenting using the board; exploring the pre-installed content as well as creating resources of your own. We support both Smart and Promethean platforms. • Stop-frame animation / “clay-mation"

Techniques and practical strategies for incorporating animation into the curriculum or after school activities. Learn all the essential skills you’ll need to create “Wallace & Gromit”- style animations and discover how to enhance story-tell ing through animation, voice over, music and sound effects. • An introduction to open source mind-mapping and presentation tools

Presentation tools like ‘Prezi’ make a refreshing change from the standard classroom methods. • Microsoft Office 2007

Do you wish to further your knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote or Publisher? This range of courses will explore the ins and outs of the various features which you will find invaluable in creating resources. • Making the switch to Microsoft Office 2010?

We’ll look at the new interface common to all the Office applications, including the Ribbon, Backstage View, Paste Preview, Photo editing tools and other enhancements. COURSE CODE: SK12 [ALL KEY STAGES]

• Podcast training

Quick, easy and inexpensive routes into harnessing podcasting technologies. We’ll show you how to produce podcasts with accessible software and hardware and how to upload to the internet as an RSS Feed. Your new skills will help you support and enhance literacy, oracy and even enable you to produce audio tutorials for your pupils. COURSE CODE: SK13 [ALL KEY STAGES]

• Setting up your own school website / blog

This training will take you painlessly through the steps to creating your own school website or blog, without the need to be a web designer. The course is ideal for school administrators, Primary ICT co-ordinators and those interested in setting up departmental blogs in secondary schools. COURSE CODE: SK14 [ALL KEY STAGES]

• Blogging in the classroom

Whether for communication, encouraging pupil writing or for news and information, blogs are an ideal and easy to use teaching tool. This session gives practical advice on their creation, their place in the curriculum and appropriate regard for e-safety. COURSE CODE: SK15 [ALL KEY STAGES]

• A beginner’s guide to using video in the classroom

Learn how to become more effec tive in using video resources, in any subject, as well as producing your own content. We’ll cover all the essential technical aspects, including, DV, AVI, MPEG4, WMV and MOV formats, as well as making the most of YouTube and using video resources with PowerPoint and whiteboards. • Adobe School Collection

The School Collection is not only affordable but also provides powerful tools for multimedia tasks such as image manipulation and video/audio editing, as well as web and print publishing. This is an introductory course to show you the potential of School Collection and allows you to move up the skills ladder from basic Moviemaker etc. Teachers in any subject area and key stage will find this course most useful. • Advanced video skills

Advance your video production skills using industry standard software such as Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro or Avid. We’ll also give you hands-on practical experience in our professional production studio using HD cameras, professional sound and lighting equipment and greenscreen technologies. • Radio production

This workshop covers all you’ll need to know to create vibrant and informative content for broadcast via the Internet or as part of an exciting curriculum project. It includes use of recording techniques, editing software, use of microphones, constructing narrative content, use of jingles and creating Foley sound effects. COURSE CODE: SK19 [ALL KEY STAGES]

• Apple - iMovie

iMovie offers a very simple, yet powerful, interface for editing video footage on the Mac. This course will cover all the essential processes, including: importing video footage from camera, adding titles and transitions, recording voiceovers and demonstrating a range of more advanced tools to add a touch of real professionalism, such as picture-in-picture and green screen. • Apple - iWeb

iWeb provides Mac users with probably the easiest to learn and quickest to use web-designing tools available. This session will cover the essential processes, including applying themes, importing pictures, videos and audio, creating online blogs and hosting podcasts. • Apple - Garageband

Garageband is Apple’s exceptionally intuitive music production and podcasting software. This workshop will introduce you to the application and develop your skills in creating and arranging your own music productions, writing soundtracks to movies, recording radio shows and even making podcasts in minutes! • Computer-controlled lighting design

This workshop is designed for teachers and practitioners of creative and dramatic arts who need to develop their knowledge in using MIDI and DMX-controlled stage lighting, lasers and pyrotechnics. Learn to create dramatic art exhibitions or enhance school productions using simple to use software. COURSE CODE: SK23 [KS2 to KS4]

• Apple – iWork and Keynote

iWork is Apple’s answer to Microsoft’s Office but with a difference. Its professional presentation features and extensive support for multi-media enables it to be used as a virtual video editing program, with very impressive graphics handling. • Making the most of the innovative iPad

Apple’s iPad mobile device has been proven to significantly improve many pupils’ engagement in a wide range of learning activities. Its interface is intuitive and interactive and there are thousands of apps to choose from! • Bring your characters to life!

This hands-on workshop will introduce you to the latest version of Crazy Talk, a wonderful software that will bring your illustrations to life through l ip-synching and animation. COURSE CODE: AD/CT01 [KS3 and KS4]

• High speed photography

Hand-on experience in using dedicated high speed cameras to capture a moment in time which the human eye would not be able to see (bird in flight, flowing water, popping a balloon), combining technical precision and artistic freedom. • Digital poster design Taking you from concept to production in a practical way. We’ll get you taking your own digital images which can then be manipulated in Photoshop. • Digital art using graphics tablets Strategies for using graphics tablets with a variety of software in art. There will be advice and guidance on purchasing the best device for your purposes and examples of how they can be applied in the curriculum to enhance student achievement. • CGI in the art classroom

An introduction to using 3D CGI software to extend pupils’ knowledge of digital artwork and its use in film, advertising, the Internet and games design. • VJ’ing

Use your art work (drawings, illustrations, paintings, photos etc) to create an interactive presentation gallery which can then be used with video projection software for interactive live performances using abstract sound, music and lighting, as well as showcasing students’ work. • Adobe training for design and technology courses

Photoshop for D&T and art / Illustrator for D&T and art / InDesign (desktop publishing) for all . This range of courses looks in detail at how these individual Adobe products can justify your investment and enhance your teaching. Individual event details are included on the attached price list. • Computer aided design (CAD) training

Practical training in using a variety of CAD software such as Pro/DESKTOP, Pro/ENGINEER, SolidWorks and SketchUp. At least one course will be the official accredited training in Pro/ENGINEER. A hands-on workshop to review the latest free-to-use applications and tools to support Computer Aided Design in D&T. • Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) training

Practical training in using a variety of CAM equipment in design and technology such as the laser cutter, 3D printer and vinyl cutter. • 3D CGI Graphics and Digital Animation

An introduction to using industry-standard 3D animation software to significantly enhance students’ 3D model presentations, from Pro-Desktop to creating an animated TV style advert. • Digital media for textiles teachers

All the high tech bits made easy! This is the multimedia equivalent for textiles teachers. A practical workshop exploring on-line tools, podcasting, video and presentation techniques which will equip you to engage your students and enhance the quality of their coursework. • Using a laser cutter for textiles

• Montserrat e-Mission

A course to show you how to implement your geography skills in this exciting simulation exercise for the evacuation of Montserrat due to a volcanic eruption and incoming hurricane! This course is in preparation for getting your students to participate via video-conferencing live with the National Space Centre, in their own e-Mission. COURSE CODE: GE/MO01 [KS3]

• Use your interactive whiteboard more effectively

Our qualified geographer will show you how to maximise the potential of multimedia resources and the internet for use on the SMART interactive whiteboard. COURSE CODE: GE/IWB02 [KS3 and KS4]

• Explore Google Earth for your fieldwork needs

• Data logging

• Lego robots

• Control technology for KS1 and KS2

• e-Safety Schools rated as excellent with regard to e-safety have well developed schemes of work that complement the school’s e-safety policies and procedures. • Primary assessment

Our primary e-learning consultant will work with staff to develop your ICT monitoring and assessment policies and practice. • Shhh! Codes and ciphers

Our maths and cryptography expert will take you on a historical cryptographic journey. You will explore different ciphers and acquire strategies for solving them. You will go away with ideas to incorporate this topic in the maths curriculum and how to develop problem-solving strategies. Advice will be given on running a crypto club in your school and how to enter the National Challenge successfully!
