    Home-made ice cream

    Ice cream isnt just a summer treat, and it shouldnt be packed with preservatives or artificial ingredients. Thats the philosophy of Paul Ballen, owner of Pauls Homemade Ice Cream thats dedicated to producing artisanal ice cream made with love. The company has just opened its first retail store in Rosebank, and we chatted to Paul to find out more.

    Q: When did your Rosebank store open?

    A: The launch of our Rosebank store was our first attempt at moving into the retail space. Our store opened up for a trial period in December last year, but we realised after three months that there are more dos and donts in the retail space than we ever thought possible. We never intended to do things half-heartedly, so we decided to close up shop for a week and come back even bigger and better in February. Were constantly striving to perfect our offering and will be continuously tweaking our store.

    Q: How are you changing the way South Africans eat, think and feel about ice cream?

    A: Ice cream culture in South Africa

    is non-existent and all our efforts go into bringing it up to the same standards that are prevalent in the US and Europe. This includes educating consumers about the differences between good and bad ice cream, making them aware that ice cream isnt just a seasonal treat, and introducing it to the market as a social food. We do this by creating events around the product and making sure Pauls Homemade Ice Cream appears at cool and trendy gatherings. We also emphasise that we are ice cream artisans unlike most ice cream producers, all of our ice cream is handcrafted and handmade with love.

    Q: What are some of your most popular flavours?

    A: Birthday Cake is super popular (the ingredients are a trade secret). Some other recent popular favourites include Dark Chocolate Choc Chip, Vietnamese Coffee Oreo, Milk Tart, and Lemon Zest and Blueberry Swirl.

    Q: What does the future hold for Pauls?

    A: More growth, better education for consumers, and hopefully a significant change in South African ice cream culture.

    A few weekends ago I visited Boschendal for the fi rst time. I wonder why its taken me so long to visit. Stepping onto the estate is instantly amazing. As we walk through the grand oak trees squirrels chase each other all over the garden and my son joyfully starts chasing them. Then just a little further down the pathway the garden suddenly opens up to reveal one of the most enormous (over 2ha) and lush vegetable gardens that I have ever seen.

    There are perfect rows of the most wholesome-looking veggies, from gigantic artichokes to the greenest of green peppers. Is this where Peter Rabbit lives? asks my three-year-old. I smile thinking how Im sure Peter would love to live here. There is so much to see that I enjoy identifying the di erent vegetables and herbs, and sampling the rose gardens perfumery. I see some of the kitchen sta walk past with freshly picked produce as they head to the restaurant and we follow them there. The Werf restaurant serves fi ne farm-style cuisine. Its concept is farm to table, which is very much a trend at the moment given the clean-eating awareness many are adopting. The idea of growing what you use in dishes seems obvious to me. But experiencing it is something else, especially having walked through the garden shortly beforehand, it makes the food come to life more when it then appears on my

    plate. Chef Christiaan Campbell is big on using local and seasonal ingredients and he creates wholesome yet elegant meals like the delectable aubergine stu ed with macadamia nut cheese.

    The Werf also encourages sharing and has a selection of meals for two. A glass of premium Boschendal wine and a side of the seasonal vegetables is mandatory. Theyre as pretty as they are delicious baby beetroot, fragrant leeks and wild carrots in di erent shades. If youre not a vegetarian then fear not as theres more than enough in the way of ethically sourced meat, like the Angus beef from the farm. Eating here is really all about relishing the great tradition of Sunday lunch.

    A refreshing alternative to your cup of joe

    The latest trend to pique the interest of caffeine connoisseurs and coffee cravers comes in a new temperature. Rather than being served piping hot as java tradition dictates, the process of creating cold brew coffee means that time replaces heat, drawing more flavour from the beans and introducing the drinker to a new coffee experience.

    Though cold brew coffee is served cold, its more than just your average iced-coffee drink. This method of creating your morning pick-me-up can be traced back to as early as 16th century Japan, though its popularity has grown immensely in Western culture over the past few years. In the US and the UK, coffee giant Starbucks has introduced cold brew to its menus, and South Africa has quickly embraced the trend too, with the bold and subtly sweet flavours of cold brews becoming increasingly popular

    among South African baristas. Cape Town, in particular, has become a hot spot (or rather, a cold spot) for sampling and falling in love with this delicious drink, but Joburg has quickly caught up, with some of the citys best coffee bars creating their own variations.

    While iced-coffee is traditionally hot coffee that is poured over ice, cold brew coffee never comes into contact with heat. Instead, coffee beans are steeped in cold or room temperate water for an extended period of time, usually around a day, and then this coffee base is diluted with water and served cold.

    Rather than just being a colder version of your favourite drink, the process of extracting the flavour results in a new coffee taste. Cold

    European Film Festival 2016

    Embrace the love of film for the third consecutive year, as the 2016 European Film Festival arrives in Joburg this month. Giving viewers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the best that European film has to offer, the festival will screen 11 feature-length films at Ster-Kinekors Cinema Nouveau theatres across South Africa.

    This year, three of the 11 featured films will be documentaries, a format that the festival hasnt seen before. Explaining this, festival director Katarina Hedrn says, We wish to contribute to the ongoing story of Europe. This story is one of a diverse continent in an interconnected world, which seems to be spinning faster and not always in the right direction.

    In keeping with this sentiment, the 2016 European Film Festivals top-performing film comes in the form of Amy, the 2016 Academy Award and British Academy of Film and Television Arts award-winning film that follows the life of jazz-soul singer Amy Winehouse. When British director Asif Kapadia took on the task of tracking Winehouses life and eventual death, the importance he placed on making the film an intensely personal one, makes it an unmissable documentary, and the perfect piece to make up part of the festival in Joburg.

    Not to be outdone by their UK contemporary, the 10 other features

    making up the festival are an impressive representation of the growth of film across Europe. Coordinated by the Goethe-Institut South Africa, the festival has been described as a selection of feature films and documentaries that allows us to discover unconventional, surprising and moving portraits of life in the multifaceted place that Europe is.

    With dramas on the schedule including Macondo (Austria), Body (Poland), Montanha (Portugal), Flowers (Spain), Something Must Break (Sweden) and Labyrinth of Lies (Germany), serious films take centre stage this year. Also gracing the silver screen during the festival is the musical comedy Belgian Rhapsody (Belgium), biopic Chocolat (France) and documentaries Fire at Sea (Italy) and A Family Affair (the Netherlands).

    As stellar films that would otherwise not be available to local audiences, this years European Film Festival gives movie lovers the chance to experience true international gems. The festival runs in Joburg at Cinema Nouveau, Rosebank Mall from 6 to 15 May.

    The circle is a simple shape with many associations. Circular shapes can help people to feel included in a space no lines mean no-ones stuck in a corner. Its also a shape with associations of wholeness and balance. Circular objects feel inherently held together and they lend themselves to being gathered in clusters and constellations.This circular focus is starting to fi lter into retail already.

    In recent international trade shows like Ambiente and Maison et Objet, circular rugs and other pieces of decor were given a lot of attention by buyers seeking something new for clients. Locally, were seeing retailers like Lim draw on this trend with items like the Walnut Veneer and Copper table (pictured).

    There are some perceptions around these items that need to change before the circle really does become the shape of the moment. For many they can be just a little too old school in their design, smacking of the retro-futurism of the 60s. It will be interesting to see how this evolves in the coming seasons, however, and whether people embrace living in the round.

    Q: How did your business start?A: I believe somewhat unlike public

    A: Everything is tailored to our needs. We run many of our companies from one location and have quite high demands in terms of bandwidth and office space itself, and place emphasis on softer elements like a great coffee shop.

    companies in the logistics, media, property, telecommunications as well as marketing spaces, to name a few.

    A: Were not a retail store. We typi cally have business-to-business relationships. Our customers visit us for meetings at various times of the day.

  • Millionaires and billionairesN ew York City has more billionaires than any other city on the planet.Last month, Forbes reported that 79billionaires call NYC home, more than Hong Kong, which has 68 billionaires, followed by Moscow with 60, Beijing with 51 and London with 48.

    New Yorks billionaires are worth a combined $364,6bn (R5,3 trillion),

    according to the magazine. According to the South Africa 2016 Wealth Report published by New World Wealth, by the end of last year there were 2,030 multimillionaires individuals with net assets of $10m or more in South Africa.

    Of these 620 were ultra-high net worth individuals (UHNWIs) owning net assets of at least

    $30m. This fi gure includes seven billionaires, 91 centimillionaires (net assets worth $100m to $1bn) and 522 a uent millionaires (net assets worth $30m to $100m).

    Joburg is home to the largest portion (44%) of South Africas HNWIs, and Mauritius is the fastest-growing destination where South African dollar millionaires choose to live.

    The Mall of Africa in Waterfall, Midrand, which opened on Thursday, is the largest single-phase shopping centre development in Southern Africa.

    He says higher interest rates are already making it more di cult for many prospective buyers to secure a bond. This added to slower economic growth spells a drop in sales that favours investors.

    There will also be more owners who fi nd it di cult to keep up their mortgage payments and wish to sell quickly to relieve the fi nancial pressure on their households, or in order to avoid foreclosure.

    But those who are investing now should not be looking for short-term gains, Davel says. Current investors should have the patience

    and resources to wait at least until the next upturn and, more importantly, to carry most of their bond and property operating costs themselves if necessary.

    The reason is that although rental properties are currently in high demand, actual rentals are unlikely to rise much over the next two to three years, Davel says.

    Landlords who have found quality tenants will not want to risk losing them by raising rents too much when they know they are also struggling with higher food, transport and utility costs, he says.

    keep track of all your transactions so that you can see in black and white exactly where your money has gone. Only if you know exactly where you have spent your income can you evaluate your situation. It is also very empowering to have this information, as you can decide what needs to change.

    3 An important part of knowing your spending habits will be to see how much debt is costing you. Dealing with this debt as quickly as possible will be the surest way to ease your fi nancial burden. Closing store accounts and cutting up unnecessary credit cards will also give you a real sense of taking back control.

    4 A critical next step is to create a spending plan for yourself. Plan how you want to direct your money. This includes having savings goals so that you have something to work towards and the satisfaction of achievement when you get there.

    5 Finally make sure that you have a discretionary fund that will cover any unforeseen expenses, and create long-term investments where your money will be making a real return. That is when you have really taken control of your money when you are no longer working for it, but it is working for you.

The homes sector moves in cycles, in much the same way as a changing tide. Demand flows freely in buoyant conditions and

    ebbs when the economic tide turns. Estate agents who do not, or cannot, adapt to transient market cycles inevitably struggle when buyer interest begins to dry up.

    Optimum priceIn a buoyant market, buyers respond well to property advertising to the extent that estate agents tend to simply sit back and field the enquiries - in shot gun philosophy. In a receding market, however, buyers are less driven by advertising and more prone to procrastination. As a result, homes take longer to sell.

    Successful agents are aware of this. They change their strategy. They go after the buyers - in rifle shot fashion, thus placing more emphasis on one-on-one appointments and less on advertising.

    This requires a high level of agent skill and experience to deliver optimum price for sellers in a declining market. And it is best achieved by sole-mandated agents who are able to seek out buyers and create, and sustain, a platform of competition between them. For sellers, this is the most effective route to a successful sale at the best of times. In a market decline, it is the only route.
