A new Table View spot serves decadent milkshakes, gourmet sandwiches and juicy home-made burgers

WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

The FUE has been making waves with its mind-blowing monster

milkshakes. Word of mouth brings people from all over the city to

this unlikely spot in Table View. Tucked

down an alley o Marine Circle and sharing a

courtyard with Nick Carstens’s sur oard-shaping

workshop, the cafe’s full name is The Festive Underground

Eatery – festive because it cheers up a dull area, and underground

because only those in the know can fi nd it (look out for the gates next

to Pam Golding Properties).

Owners Lynette and Wayne Dodd, and Nick Carstens are long-

time friends who shared a dream of owning a cafe. The partnership came

together when the space adjoining Nick’s sur oard business became available. Open Monday to Fridays only, the vibe is chilled and friendly, with freelancers using the free Wi-Fi over co ee and croissants, and surfers refuelling on burgers and the famous monster milkshakes.

“We like locally sourced ingredients, and a lovely baker makes our breads and

croissants.” says Lynette. “We steer clear of commercial eggs and bacon and use hormone-free meat from our local family butcher. Everything on the menu is our favourite stu .”

There are nachos, gourmet sandwiches, home-made burgers, fresh salads with micro-greens, cakes and doughnuts freshly baked in-house every morning, and of course, the exceptional monster milkshakes: over a litre of thick, creamy milkshake in fi ve di erent fl avours with crazy stacks of toppings. The chocolate-mint shake cames with a wide cone balanced on top, fi lled with ice cream, a slice of rich chocolate cake, doughnut twists and pretzels. It took three of us to fi nish it and it was decadently delicious. Banting advocates have plenty of options too, from the portobello burger, to the Banting nachos with baked sweet potato crisps, and the macadamia nut brownies.

Everything here has a story: the eclectic assortment of tables and chairs were collected over the years by Nick, and Wayne’s vintage MG parked outside has been in the restoration process for decades. The cafe’s rustic tin plates were collected a few at a time on a cycling trip around Lake Malawi. “We came back with our rucksacks full of 100 plates on the back of our bicycles,” says Lynette. Plans for the winter include a Bedouin tent in the courtyard and a fi replace inside the cafe.

A few weekends ago I visited Boschendal for

the fi rst time. I wonder why it’s taken me so long to visit. Stepping onto the estate is instantly amazing. As we walk through the grand oak trees squirrels chase each other all over the garden and my son joyfully starts chasing them. Then just a little further down the pathway the garden suddenly opens up to reveal one of the most enormous (over 2ha) and lush vegetable gardens that I have ever seen.

There are perfect rows of the most wholesome-looking veggies, from gigantic artichokes to the greenest of green peppers. “Is this where Peter Rabbit lives?” asks my three-year-old. I smile thinking how I’m sure Peter would love to live here. There is so much to see that I enjoy identifying the di erent vegetables and herbs, and sampling the rose garden’s perfumery. I see some of the kitchen sta walk past with freshly picked produce as they head to the restaurant and we follow them there. The Werf restaurant serves fi ne farm-style cuisine. Its concept is “farm to table”, which is very much a trend at the moment given the clean-eating awareness many are adopting. The idea of growing what you use in dishes seems obvious to me. But experiencing it is something else, especially having walked through the garden shortly beforehand, it makes the food come to life more when it then appears on my

plate. Chef Christiaan Campbell is big on using local and seasonal ingredients and he creates wholesome yet elegant meals like the delectable aubergine stu ed with macadamia nut cheese.

The Werf also encourages sharing and has a selection of meals for two. A glass of premium Boschendal wine and a side of the seasonal vegetables is mandatory. They’re as pretty as they are delicious – baby beetroot, fragrant leeks and wild carrots in di erent shades. If you’re not a vegetarian then fear not as there’s more than enough in the way of ethically sourced meat, like the Angus beef from the farm. Eating here is really all about relishing the great tradition of Sunday lunch.

When it comes to spirits, tequila has something of a bad reputation.

The shooter of choice for hard-partying students, it’s a spirit that – locally, at least – is associated with quantity rather than quality.

That’s beginning to change, though. South Africa is currently the fourth-largest tequila market worldwide – trailing only Mexico, the US and Russia – and a crop of new cocktail bars and Mexican eateries are fast embracing the abundance of top-quality tequila on o er.

El Burro on trendy Somerset Road is credited with showing Capetonians what authentic Mexican food is all about, and its ground fl oor tequila bar, Cabrito, is doing the same for the spirit made from the blue agave plant. Over 50 di erent pours are available, from mass-market Olmeca to more complex premium tequilas, like Centinela, Patrón and Don Julio. With a few exceptions, these are sipping tequilas, served straight-up or on ice to sip, swirl and savour as you would a whisky or brandy.

On the Camps Bay seafront Del Mar dishes up superb modern Mexican cuisine and delicious margaritas, alongside an admirable selection of tequila and mezcal. The di erence? While tequila is made solely from blue agave, mezcal can be distilled from a few dozen members of the agave plant family. Tequila and mezcal are also traditionally produced in di erent regions of Mexico.

The De Grendel restaurant has been on my To Eat list for many months. Friends of mine

spend every celebratory event there (real or imaginary celebrations) and anyone I know who has eaten at this vineyard restaurant in Panorama has waxed lyrical about the experience.

It didn’t take long to fi nd out why. We were busy admiring the beautiful views stretching as far as the ocean when we were presented with a menu fi lled with delicious-sounding ingredients and no idea of how they were presented. This element of surprise is an integral part of the De Grendel experience, as are the locally sourced ingredients and prevalence of farm produce. It’s a fresh, inventive take on a lunch (or dinner) menu, and one I would happily get used to.

We began our meal with two superb starters – a Spanish-inspired squid and prawn dish with tomato panna cotta and chorizo (beautifully spiced), and a Thai-infused scallop and soft shell crab dish with tom yum, lemongrass and celeriac. Both were multilayered and fragrant, each mouthful a gift.

Mains were a di cult choice – beef fi llet with oyster mushrooms, aubergine and steamed bun, grilled lamb rump with Emmental, pepper hummus and gremolata, or pork belly and pork fi llet with bacon, potato and orange? As carnivores we were only slightly

On the Del Mar menu it’s the La Muerte Mezcal Reposado that’s most worth a taste, with the reposado (rested for two months in oak barrels) and añejo (aged for around 12 months in barrel) on o er.

Popular tequila brand Jose Cuervo also recently launched a reposado tequila in the South African market. Jose Cuervo Tradicional Reposado is made from double-distilled spirits rested in white oak barrels. The recipe is said to date back more than 200 years, delivering a hint of smoke, citrus, spice and caramel on the palate. At least, that’s what you’ll taste if you sip it, instead of knocking it back.

“In Mexico it is customary to sip Tradicional with sangrita or a cold beer,” says Blue Masoka, brand manager for local Jose Cuervo distributors Edward Snell & Co. “South Africans are unfamiliar with the notion of sipping tequila. Tradicional is unlike any other tequila and due to the fermentation and distillery methods is produced specifi cally for sipping.”

tempted by the wild mushroom and tru e arborio and the linefi sh with smoked butternut risotto (although how gorgonzola, fennel, pine nut, yoghurt and beetroot combined, would have been a discovery all on its own). We chose the pork dish – highly recommended by our wonderful waitress – and the lamb, and both were exceptional. Generous portions with a perfect combination of fl avours that packed a punch but didn’t overwhelm the palate.

Somehow we found space for dessert (don’t we all?) and chose the light and lovely strawberry-cream panna cotta with balsamic, berries and lemon curd alongside the strong co ee bavarois with cake crumble, nougat and meringue. The gingerbread ice cream and pecan nuts were the perfect complement to the intense co ee fl avour.

Of course, De Grendel is as famous for its wine as its food, and the superb Rubaiyat red blend was the ideal accompaniment to our meal full of surprises. If you’re looking for somewhere special to celebrate, De Grendel may just be your new favourite spot. Well worth adding to your list!

The design world has su ered from the tyranny of straight lines and sharp corners for too

long and we’re on the verge of seeing a more curved approach take over – at least according to Li Edelkoort, the pre-eminent trend forecaster.

In a recent trend report, she identifi ed the circle as a key metaphor for interior and product design in the coming seasons. And while we don’t expect this to be the end of corners as we know them, it signifi es an interesting shift in approaches to design.

The circle is a simple shape with many associations. Circular shapes can help people to feel included in a space – no lines mean no-one’s stuck in a corner. It’s also a shape with associations of wholeness and balance. Circular objects feel inherently held together and they lend themselves to being gathered in clusters and constellations. This circular focus is starting to fi lter into retail already.

In recent international trade shows like Ambiente and Maison et Objet, circular rugs and other pieces of decor were given a lot of attention by buyers seeking something new for clients. Locally, we’re seeing retailers like Lim draw on this trend with items like the Walnut Veneer and Copper table (pictured).

There are some perceptions around these items that need to change before the circle really does become the shape of the moment. For many they can be just a little too old school in their design, smacking of the retro-futurism of the 60s. It will be interesting to see how this evolves in the coming seasons, however, and whether people embrace living in the round.

Neighbourhood6 PROPERTY NEWS 1 MAY 2016

Interior designer and 20th century design expert, Emma de Crespigny, brings a new collection of vintage

investment furniture to the Bo-Kaap.

She’s expanded her repertoire to include reproductions of selected modernist classics and a new line of contemporary lighting and accessories with a retro feel.

Q: How did your business start?A: When I returned to Cape Town after

30 years in New York, I decided it was time to start my own business. I started my business in a part of my house in Woodstock to keep costs low. I eventually outgrew the space.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?

A: I wanted town presence and wanted to be close to the buzz on Bree Street. The location is important in my business and the proximity to other art institutions is also helpful.

Q: How did you find your premises?A: I worked with an agent and when

I fi rst saw the large semi-industrial, warehouse-like space, I knew it was perfect for my style.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?

A: The large open space helps make the most of the furniture here. Since I moved in, I have put up a couple of walls to create vignettes that separate the designs into room settings. This helps potential clients visualise my style in their homes.

Q: Who are your neighbours?A: I am fortunate to be situated at

142 Buitengracht Street in the creative cluster known as the Urban

Hub at the foot of the Bo-Kaap. My neighbours include art and design galleries, namely Studio Dylan Thomaz, Eclectica Design & Art, Gallery Momo and renowned textile store, Mungo Studio.

Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area?

A: I think for the amount of space I occupy the price is reasonable. It is far more a ordable for a new business than Bree Street, which is also in close proximity.

Q: What is your shop footprint?A: I get a lot of tourists who are

visiting Bo-Kaap as well as locals living or working in the immediate area. Otherwise, I am more of a destination venue for interior designers and architects as well as mid-century design enthusiasts.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans?

A: I have already expanded by joining the space next door to mine. I have partnered with an art dealer from Joburg to create an art gallery featuring emerging African artists to complement the furniture.

Q: Do you operate online as well?A: My website allows buyers to

purchase online and expands my client base. I also have a steady web presence on various social media platforms.

Q: What’s your most popular item?A: The bestsellers to date have

been the mid-century sofas that I make locally. I also make other designs including lighting and furniture inspired by mid-century antecedents.

In the modern world, fi nancial stress has become a signifi cant problem for a large part of

the population. Studies show that money worries are one of the leading causes of absenteeism from work, and a leading reason for divorce.

For many people, the core problem is that they simply don’t feel that they have a handle on their fi nances. They don’t think that they are managing on the salaries that they earn.

Overcoming this stress is not easy, particularly if they have taken on a lot of debt. It is possible, however. To put your fi nancial self in order, you need to get down to the basics of your fi nancial situation.

1 The most important place to start is with the same thing that

sits on top of every company’s income statement – know how much money is coming into your accounts. It may sound incredible, but many people don’t take conscious stock of their fi nancial position. Unless you know exactly how much you are earning, you can’t know how much you are able to spend.

2 The second part of your personal income statement is knowing how

you are currently spending this money. It may take a few months to do, but

keep track of all your transactions so that you can see in black and white exactly where your money has gone. Only if you know exactly where you have spent your income can you evaluate your situation. It is also very empowering to have this information, as you can decide what needs to change.

3 An important part of knowing your spending habits will be to

see how much debt is costing you. Dealing with this debt as quickly as possible will be the surest way to ease your fi nancial burden. Closing store accounts and cutting up unnecessary credit cards will also give you a real sense of taking back control.

4 A critical next step is to create a spending plan for yourself.

Plan how you want to direct your money. This includes having savings goals so that you have something to work towards and the satisfaction of achievement when you get there.

5 Finally make sure that you have a discretionary fund that

will cover any unforeseen expenses, and create long-term investments where your money will be making a real return. That is when you have really taken control of your money – when you are no longer working for it, but it is working for you.

Millionaires and billionairesN ew York City has more

billionaires than any other city on the planet.

Last month, Forbes reported that 79 billionaires call NYC home, more than Hong Kong, which has 68 billionaires, followed by Moscow with 60, Beijing with 51 and London with 48.

New York’s billionaires are worth a combined $364,6bn (R5,3 trillion),

according to the magazine. According to the South Africa 2016 Wealth Report published by New World Wealth, by the end of last year there were 2,030 multimillionaires – individuals with net assets of $10m or more – in South Africa.

Of these 620 were ultra-high net worth individuals (UHNWIs) owning net assets of at least

$30m. This fi gure includes seven billionaires, 91 centimillionaires (net assets worth $100m to $1bn) and 522 a uent millionaires (net assets worth $30m to $100m).

Joburg is home to the largest portion (44%) of South Africa’s HNWIs, and Mauritius is the fastest-growing destination where South African dollar millionaires choose to live.

The Mall of Africa in Waterfall, Midrand, which opened on Thursday, is the largest

single-phase shopping centre development in Southern Africa.

Top international brands opening their fi rst stores in South Africa at Mall of Africa include Armani Exchange, Helly Hansen, Asics, Zara Home, The Kooples, Under Armour, Women’secret and Soap Stories. These new retailers will join a full pack of fl agship stores from favourite brands like H&M, Forever 21, Forever

New, River Island, Mango, Cotton On, Starbucks, Versace and Zara.

Commenting on the development, Louis van der Watt, Atterbury Property Developments, says, “Developing a super-regional mall in the heart of the fastest growing urban node on the continent presented the opportunity to create an exciting modern landmark. Its exceptional scale, design, location, retail mix and access creates an exciting asset and places it at the forefront of retail developments.”

The stats are impressive:

• 300+ stores and restaurants• 26 entrances• 130,000m2 of retail space• R5bn to develop and build• 80% owned by Attacq Limited• 20% owned by Atterbury

Why property investment is a good shout

Property is far less volatile than the equity or share markets. Property prices tend to increase consistently over time, which

makes it a lot easier to gauge the estimated return on investment. Property owners will not have to sleep with one eye glued to the stock market and have to sell the minute the market is at a high.ADRIAN GOSLETT, REGIONAL DIRECTOR AND CEO, RE/MAX OF SOUTHERN AFRICA

Window opening for serious property investorsThe tight conditions in the

property market at the moment represent some good

opportunities for investors with a medium- to long-term outlook.

That’s according to Jan Davel, managing director, RealNet estate agency group, who says all indications are that there will be a resumption of stronger value growth in the market within the next two to three years.

“In the meantime, buyers and investors who are intent on increasing their property portfolios will have a defi nite advantage if they make the most of the current lull.”

He says higher interest rates are already making it more di cult for many prospective buyers to secure a bond. This added to slower economic growth spells a drop in sales that favours investors.

There will also be more owners who fi nd it di cult to keep up their mortgage payments and wish to sell quickly to relieve the fi nancial pressure on their households, or in order to avoid foreclosure.

But those who are investing now should not be looking for short-term gains, Davel says. “Current investors should have the patience

and resources to wait at least until the next upturn and, more importantly, to carry most of their bond and property operating costs themselves if necessary.

“The reason is that although rental properties are currently in high demand, actual rentals are unlikely to rise much over the next two to three years,” Davel says.

“Landlords who have found quality tenants will not want to risk losing them by raising rents too much when they know they are also struggling with higher food, transport and utility costs,” he says.

Q: Who is buying property in the area and what types of properties are available?

A: Many foreigners are looking to buy property in Cape Town, the majority coming from Germany, France, the US and the UK. Tamboerskloof has a large German community, with the German School located in its heart. Usually Tamboerskloof buyers are not first-time buyers and some own several properties in the area. Most buyers are over the age of 36, most have families and are looking to upgrade to a bigger property closer to the city, or are investors looking for property which can offer a good rental return. Tamboerskloof offers a variety – from apartment blocks, to beautiful Victorian cottages, as well as ultra-modern homes.

Q: What do you love most about this area?

A: Tamboerskloof is the real thing. Olde Cape at its best, yet trendy and vibey where you feel totally at home. It is one of the oldest residential suburbs of Cape Town with beautiful Victorian homes and an eclectic mix of architectural styles adding character. I love hanging out with my friends at The Blue Cafe or having breakfast at Cafe Puka from where you can watch the locals go by with their dogs and catch up on the news of the day. It’s so cosmopolitan and whether you are Afrikaans, English, German, French or from other parts of Africa, you will always feel you belong and never want to leave.

Q: What can buyers expect to pay for property?

A: Tamboerskloof is an eclectic mix of Edwardian and Victorian homes interspersed with ultra-modern architectural masterpieces on the slopes of Signal Hill. It is such a pleasant place to live that nobody wants to leave. As a result of this, stock in the area seldom becomes available and this has driven up prices. An entry-level studio apartment would cost over R1,5m, while larger apartments can achieve up to R16m. Houses range from R5m to R25m. Numerous upmarket guesthouses and B&Bs are situated in the suburb, and there is a wonderful community spirit with an active and effective neighbourhood watch.

“It’s very central. You can hop over the Nek to the beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay, or freewheel down the hill into town,” says resident Jesse Ternent. The top of Kloof Street with all its trendy bars and restaurants is within walking distance – you’re only a five-minute drive from all the cultural, foodie and sporting happenings of the City Bowl, and there are plenty of laid-back neighbourhood cafes.

In recent years, the suburb has become popular with families of all nationalities. There’s the German International

School right there, the top City Bowl schools close by, and a selection of good preschools. “There is such a community spirit in Tamboerskloof,” says resident Jo Hoets, “people actually walk around, the kids play in the park, and you generally know your neighbours. Tamboerskloof is full of characters – famous artists, writers, models, stylists, entrepreneurs, CEOs, investment bankers – but everyone is pretty low-key.”

The Tamboerskloof Erf 81 urban farm with its pigs, geese and rabbits and a regular Sunday market, is a favourite family outing, and there are hiking trails taking you further into nature. “A really top thing is the unequalled mountain therapy available right on our doorstep, being able to walk up Lion’s Head for my morning exercise,” says Penny Dobbie, who has lived here for 40 years. And while the summer south-easter can be hectic, Tamboerskloof has a mild winter climate protected by Signal Hill from the worst of the winter storms.
