Food nomads

Street food has acquired wheels and is going placesWORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED

If your last experience of food served from a van was a greasy hot dog or a soft serve ice cream, it’s time to

look about you at the new breed of food trucks that are transforming the street food scene in Cape Town. Colourful vans with chalkboard menus are serving fresh food worthy of a trendy restaurant at markets and festivals. The best of them catered for chic foodies at last year’s Design Indaba, had their own street food festival and are increasingly a hip catering choice for private parties.

While food tends to be pared down in presentation, the essence of street food is that it’s easy to eat and casual, it’s bursting with fl avour and has taste infl uences as individual as the truck owners.

Mon Ami describes itself as a “French Afrik Bistro” and owners Florian and Lucille have combined their love of travel and food to serve food that is fresh and full of infl uences from their years of travelling the world – their chicken wrap with a secret coconut and lime sauce is satisfyingly stu ed with avocado and veggies for a healthy balanced meal. there are Moroccan lamb burgers and Prego steak rolls. Everything is freshly made on the spot. They’re at the farmers’ market in the Company’s Garden every Saturday and at other markets and events throughout the month.

Richter and Sam of Wahine are another well-travelled pair cooking up a storm. Sam grew up in Fiji, and Richter grew up in Pretoria. They met in South Korea and serve Polynesian food, infl uenced by Sam’s South Pacifi c heritage, to an enthusiastic Cape Town crowd. Think island curries, silky noodle dishes, smoked pork with home-made barbeque sauce, teriyaki chicken wraps and more. Find them at Black River Business Park on Fridays and at markets and events on the weekends.

Nomadic by nature, you’re unlikely to fi nd one of these trucks parked permanently on a street corner near you, but it’s worth tracking down the best of them. The secret is to follow your favourites on Twitter and Facebook to fi nd out where and when you can fi nd them.

EXPERIENCE IT FOR YOURSELF:

Revving Up Rosé festival

Rosé-style wines have had something of a renaissance recently, and South African

winemakers are turning out wonderful wines that are, happily, a far cry from the sickly sweet “pink-stickies” of the past.

The 2016 Revving Up Rosé festival sets up shop at Rickety Bridge Estate outside Franschhoek on 13 February, and is a fi ne place to discover some of the best pink wines in the Cape.

While it’s a perfect excuse to escape to the winelands for the Valentine’s weekend, visitors will discover a wonderful selection of Rosé-style wines from a wide range of local producers. The focus is fi rmly on cellars from the valley, with an interesting mix of boutique producers and large estates ranging from Solms-Delta to Anthonij Rupert and Haute Cabrière.

Le Lude is the new kid on the Franschhoek block, but its Rosé Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) is well worth seeking out: a blend of

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, it is the fi rst local MCC matured under cork, rather than crown cap, leading to a balanced palate of bright red fruits and brioche richness. The Jess Dry Rosé from Vrede & Lust is an interesting blend of Pinotage and Shiraz, while the wonderfully dry Mourvèdre Rosé from Babylonstoren winemaker Charl Coetzee is a perfect example of Rosé done right.

The day begins with a range of trail runs and mountain bike races – ranging from 5km to 60km – capped o by a stylish farm breakfast before tasting begins at 10am. There will be live music throughout the day and Paulina’s restaurant will o er a Rosé-friendly à la carte. Alternatively, pre-book a delicious farm-style picnic to enjoy on the lawns overlooking the vineyards.

The tasting tables will close in the late afternoon, but wine sales will remain open for visitors to enjoy a sundowner, live music and a tapas selection from the restaurant.

DID YOU KNOW?

There are a number of peacocks who

call TOKARA home, so keep an eye

out for these magnifi cent creatures.

The placeTOKARA restaurant is a smart yet unpretentious space. The restaurant’s interior was recently upgraded through a collaboration between TOKARA Estate owner Anne-Marie Ferreira and interior designer Samantha Fuchs. Changes include elegant cream leather chairs and bold copper light fi xtures that drop from the high wooden rafters. On the walls hang a rare collection of fi ve William Kentridge tapestries (no other place in the world has this many on display, which makes me treasure them more). But it was the natural surroundings that inspired the interior upgrade. Seated at a half-moon table on the balcony makes it easy to understand why.

The foodGazing at the contouring TOKARA vineyards from the height of the balcony is quite relaxing and an ideal way to spend a lunchtime. Chef Richard Carstens has created dishes there for over fi ve years. By the taste of his latest summer menu he’s not about to let up on the innovation. The intriguing combination of a Franco-Japanese style is another reason to enjoy Carstens’s dishes. The combination is not easy to pull o , but he makes it seem so cohesive that it’s almost normal. In particular I liked the cured rainbow trout and the buckwheat risotto, as well as the chocolate mousse for dessert. It’s no wonder Carstens is an award-winning chef and the restaurant has recently been included in SA’s Fine Dining Top 10 list (Tripadvisor.com Travellers’ Choice). If you haven’t yet been then TOKARA deserves a visit.

The setting

One of the most naturally exquisite areas in the Stellenbosch surrounds is the area along the Helshoogte Pass. Dotted with some of the country’s fi nest wine estates along the way, this area exhibits nature at its best. From the rolling vineyards wrapped seamlessly around the land, to the profound beauty of the mountainous Simonsberg backdrop, it requires a lengthy pause to take in the natural grandeur. But that’s just the start of it. Besides creating some of the fi nest wines in the country, this area also has some of the fi nest cuisine.

Metallics are interesting colours to track when it comes to home trends. Unlike paint

colours and other surface trends, metallics usually straddle the line between aesthetic and construction. They don’t just speak to how something looks, but how it’s made too.

That’s why when it comes to the current trends towards golds, bronzes and coppers, we can see how they say something deeper about our collective mind-set and not just passing fashion. In a world where so much of what we interact with is clean and minimal, from our technology to our cars and our clothing, metallics are emphatically of the earth. They signify preciousness and permanence – especially the new breed of burnished and heirloom-inspired fi nishes. Current metallics speak to craft and

heritage. They give our world depth where so much is about the superfi cial.So it’s no surprise then that we’re seeing metallics pop up in all kinds of interesting areas. From the expected places like lighting and plumbing through to fi nishes on products like ceramics and other decor, precious metallics help to give depth to our homes. The approach is even being seen in statement appliances like KitchenAid’s newly launched champagne gold colour option, giving the iconic mixer a glimmering update.

This new focus on precious metallics has a much broader appeal than previous incarnations of the trend. These are not the bling and opulent (and often divisive) tones of the early 2000s. They are more about creating modern heirlooms than showing o wealth, and that desire for a sense of permanence is something that everyone can relate to.

Rate hike means a bumpy ride for property

The recent repo rate hike of 50 basis points comes as no surprise, says Samuel Seeff,

chairman, Seeff group. “Consumers should be aware that this is the first of more hikes to follow.” According to him, affordability will be the key theme for the property market. “Buyers will be looking closely at prices and driving a hard bargain,” Seeff adds.

Looking at the rate hike pragmatically, Andrew Golding, CEO, Pam Golding Property Group, says that although house price growth has slowed, nominal prices are currently at record highs of about R1,386m, while the real price, which takes inflation into account, is just 10% off its record highs before the 2007 crisis. “We have a rapidly growing, young

population for whom there is insufficient housing, so there is little reason to expect house prices to fall outright.”

Herschel Jawitz, CEO, Jawitz Properties, says, “The 50 basis points mean an increase in repayments of R165 per month per R500,000 of bond. This may not seem significant at first glance, but when added to the previous rate hike it begins to add up.”

Adrian Goslett, CEO, RE/MAX Southern Africa, says consumers who are over-indebted, should seek financial advice and consolidate and pay off short-term debt. Selling a home should be the last option, as property is the one long-term asset that should yield a return over time.

Construction of the R3,5bn Clairwood Logistics Park will commence soon, creating

employment and business opportunities within the South Durban Basin.

KwaZulu-Natal’s MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Michael Mabuyakhulu gave the project the go-ahead after his department found that the amended Environmental Impact Report (EIR) received from the Capital Property Fund in September 2014, complied with stringent regulations and adequately addressed concerns raised during an appeal.

Last year the Monkeybiz and studio moved home, but only just around the corner, staying close to its roots

in the Bo-Kaap. Kate Carlyle, general manager of Monkeybiz tells us more.

Q: How did your business start?A: Monkeybiz started in 2000 with

Barbara Jackson, who was an iconic South African potter. Barbara wanted to pay it forward and help women to help themselves. The beading project soon grew to provide work for around 450 women.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?

A: Monkeybiz was born in the Bo-Kaap and has had a very close relationship with the Bo-Kaap community. We are close to our largest benefactor and supporter, Carrol Boyes.

Q: How did you fi nd your premises? A: Our new premises are next to the

very old, established family business, Rocksole. When we had to move, as the Carrol Boyes head o ce was vacating to new premises, Monkeybiz went to Mr GK from Rocksole, who happened to have something available.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?

A: Monkeybiz has a target market mainly made up of international tourists. Our retail store relies on passing tourist feet and the retail space on Wale Street, opposite the Hilton Hotel and where the tour buses stop, was ideal. Our studio space works in conjunction with the shop and we need easy access as well as close contact between the two spaces. We have a large studio space directly above the shop and it is accessible

to customers visiting the retail arm, as well as accessible parking.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: One of the oldest and best-

known family-owned businesses in Cape Town, Rocksole.

Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area?

A: I do not know what the prices are in the area, but we have had the support of Mr GK and Mr B of a very reasonable rental, as we are a non-profi t organisation.

Q: What is your shop footprint?A: Compared to last year we can say

that the number of walk-ins has dramatically risen way over double. We were previously in Rose Street just two blocks o course, so only the people who knew us would come through and very few walk-ins. Now we are well on the beaten track and have a high visibility.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: No, this was our expansion plan.

Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, we have an online shop

at monkeybiz.co.za.

Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Beaded artworks.

Insure yourself

Analyse itPATRICK CAIRNS

Life insurance is a di cult subject. Not only does it require you to consider

your own mortality, but it also means having to put some sort of a value on what you are worth.

It can be di cult to think about your family carrying on without you, but that is exactly what has to be done when thinking about whether you need life insurance and how much you might need.

If you have anyone who depends on you fi nancially, whether that is children, a spouse, parents or siblings, then life insurance is critical.

Life insurance guarantees that your death won’t leave your dependants in fi nancial trouble. It’s not about paying for your funeral or having some money to buy something nice to cheer them up, but about ensuring that they can meet all their fi nancial obligations without your income.

Particularly if you are paying o signifi cant debts, such as a home loan or a car, it is worth making sure that those are covered by an insurance policy that can remove that burden. You might also need life insurance to cover the expenses of your estate.

When working out how much life insurance you need, consider:

1 How much would I need to pay o all my debt?

2 What are my monthly expenses, and how much would I need to create that income for my family at a drawdown rate of 5% a year?

3 Will I need to provide funding for my children’s future education?

4 Do I need to provide for the expenses in my estate?

However, life insurance is not something that you necessarily need to hang on to

forever. Just as you don’t need to insure a car that you no longer own, you can outlive your need for life insurance. This would be the case if you satisfy three criteria:

1 You and your spouse are independently wealthy enough and each has enough income to meet your debt obligations and sustain your standard of living. If either of you passed away, the other would therefore still be in a stable fi nancial position.

2 You have no other dependants. If your children are self-su cient adults, and you are not responsible for any other family members, then your death would not leave anyone fi nancially vulnerable.

3 Your estate is either too small to attract estate duties, or has enough liquid assets to meet the taxes and executor’s fees. In South Africa the fi rst R3,5m of your estate is currently exempt from tax.

Q: What do you love about this area?A: I see Clifton and Camps Bay as

two distinct areas. They both have access to beautiful beaches but I’m a fi rm favourite of Clifton because it escapes the strong winds that often sweep through Camps Bay. Properties in both areas enjoy spectacular views of the Twelve Apostles and are conveniently close to the shops in town. Last year I sold the most expensive property in the country on Nettleton Road in Clifton for R111m. These are both very small suburbs with unbelievable demand, especially from Joburg buyers.

Q: How has the area changed over the past fi ve years?

A: There is no doubt that these sought-after seaside communities have over the last fi ve years come to represent Africa’s very own Saint-Tropez. These suburbs are renowned for their world-class trophy properties. The last fi ve years have brought unprecedented demand which has resulted in the lowest levels of properties for sale and a doubling of the selling prices. It is not unusual for Clifton properties to achieve well in excess of R100,000/m2 and there are hardly any family homes for sale in Camps Bay for less than R10m.

Q: Who is buying properties in this area?

A: A high percentage of property sales in Cape Town are from South African buyers who are relocating from Johannesburg and Durban. Cape Town is the Monte Carlo of Africa and attracts wealthy buyers from all over the continent - around around 20% of the high-net-worth buyers are from other African countries. Clifton and Camps Bay, the V&A Waterfront and the whole Atlantic Seaboard are experiencing a shortage of properties for sale, as demand in these areas is particularly high.

About the area

Sweeping views of the ocean and the mountain range behind you, pristine white sand beaches, fi ve-

star restaurants on your doorstep – it doesn’t get much better than Clifton and Camps Bay. A fi rm favourite of the international jet setters, properties in these two suburbs are still mostly owned by South Africans, with foreign buyers making up only 10% of the market according to Lance Cohen from See . Still, it’s not uncommon to overhear a mix of European languages as you stroll down Victoria Road in high season, and it’s no wonder when you take in the natural beauty that surrounds you.
