Letter from the editor

Back to the grind of another school year! Back to more traffic, busy schedules — sooner than you think — darkness at 5 p.m. I hope everyone had a wonderful summer. I know we did. We went on two more camping trips and had our first snake encounter! Believe it or not, with all the camping and hiking we have done we had never seen a snake! Luckily it wasn’t poisonous (we think), but we steered clear and left him to slither about. YUCK!

Jackson had a great time in gymnastics camp, and he is actually really good. Brad has always dreamed of him playing Georgia football, but who knows, maybe we have a future Gym Dawg on our hands! He finally started Pre-K, and I cannot wait to see how much he learns and grows into a little man. He is already so smart and excited to learn; I think he is really going to have a fun year!

Isabelle is so tan from being in the pool at the YMCA everyday, I think she’ll be brown all winter! One thing she did learn in camp brought me right back to childhood and maybe it will you, too: “Miss Mary, Black, Black Black, all dressed in black, black, black, with silver buttons, buttons, buttons….”

She just couldn’t figure out how I knew the words to this already! She had such a great time at camp and came out of her shell a little more. I know she is anxious to start the first grade. She set a goal at the beginning of the summer to read 55 books, and she did it! The best part about that was her reading the stories to Jackson, so he could be included as well.

Sales at all of our properties continue at a steady pace with 8 new homeowners moving in between June and July. Introducing them to their new friends and neighbors is one of my favorite things to do.

I am going to try to get some more human interest stories in the newsletter, so if you have any ideas please share them with me!

On the Road Again! Last month, I introduced you to The Orchards homeowners Margie and Lou. Together with their friend Mary and Annabelle the York-shire terrier, the crew of women covered 19 states and 5,685 miles in 21 days.

Here are a few more of the e-mails written by Mary that were sent home to friends and family.

May 8, 2009 Two beautiful days in a row! After yesterday’s incredible drive through Zion Nat’l Park we added today’s drive through Bryce Canyon Nat’l Park and Red Canyon Nat’l Park. Excellent for photography on both days.

We ran into something today I had never seen. There were two several-mile stretches of 80 mph speed limits. Of course, being proper little old ladies, we didn’t go nearly that fast. …

Margie is now calling me “I can’t find it.” Apparently, it’s what I say more than anything else.

May 10, 2009 Busy day today as we went to Temple Square in downtown Salt Lake City. We took a guided tour... and also visited a museum with a genealogical library for Lou and Margie to try and find out some of their family information.

May 11, 2009 We’re in an RV park in Jackson Hole, Wy. Yesterday we had a beautiful drive through the foot hills (foot mountains) of the Grand Tetons. … Heading to Yellowstone tomorrow.

....After the Tetons came Yellowstone, snow everywhere. After seeing the tail end of Old Faithful erupt in horizontal snow, we headed north to Mammoth Hot Springs finding a few animal shots on the way, elk and buffalo. .... Leaving here tomorrow and heading east, the plan is to hit Rapid City, SD near Mt. Rushmore.

May 15, 2009 Spent today seeing Mt. Rushmore and the unfinished Crazy Horse Monument. Both impressive.... Now headed to Nebraska City, Neb.

May 16, 2009 Tonight we’re in a pretty little RV park with lots of trees. Tomorrow heading across Missouri to St. Louis and will be almost home. To the gardeners of the world: dandelions grow everywhere! Even with snow on the ground!

We’ve been looking for a Wal-Mart or grocery store for two days and have come to the conclusion that no one near the interstate highways in South Dakota or Iowa need food!

September’s The Orchards Group newsletter will be the conclusion of Margie, Lou, Mary and Annabelle’s road trip across the United States.

The Orchards of Crabapple homeowners got together with the Alpharetta American Legion Post #201 and collected dona-tions for our troops deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. They set up a drop off point in their neighborhood Grand Club-house. A list of items was sent to all homeowners and collections took place through June 30. The Legion sent the items to our ser-vice men and women.

The Orchards of Habersham Grove homeowners have been getting together this summer to go to the Gwinnett Braves base-ball games. For each game, about 30 to 40 homeowners carpool to the game, where everyone has “a ball.”
