5. Description of SETTING:

The school is in an area of rolling hills with trees and farm fields all directions. There is a farm site to the north.

1. Feature Description, Integrity, Eligibility:

The feature is a one room prairie school on a foundation of poured concrete. The gable roof of the school is covered with metal sheeting. There is a red brick chimney located at the north end of the peak of the roof. The soffits are closed. The school measures 24 feet north to south and 18 feet east to west with the entry measuring 14 feet east to west and 10 feet north to south.

The siding begins with a wide trim board under the peak end of the roof. The remainder of the siding is 6 inch wood lap with 4 inch corner trim. The paint appears to be very recent. Two concrete steps lead to a concrete platform that gives entry to the school. There is a 5 panel wood door with a covered opening at the top that was likely a transom window. There is one small fixed pane window on the east wall of the entry. The entry walls are finished with wood lap inside. Another wood door with decorative windows across the top gives entry to the school The walls inside the school room are finished with wallboard. The east wall has 5 double hung, one over one, windows with much of the glass remaining and all are covered with translucent plastic on the outside. The window trim is wide boards with a decorative finishing piece at the top of each window. The ceiling of the school room is beadboard covered with ceiling tiles. The ceiling is slanted to the walls on both the east and west sides. The floor is tongue and groove hardwood. There are blackboards on part of the west wall and also the south wall to the entry door. Electricity is present with wires and fixtures apparent.

Early 1940's the school was also called the Momb School.

1. Feature Description, Integrity, Eligibility:Feature 1 is a school house (ca. 1917) near the northeast corner of Section 7 of Township 155N Range 94W. The original rectangular building has a mudroom addition on the south face. The foundation is poured concrete that is crumbling in a few places. The building has a balloon frame with an exterior cladding of simple drop horizontal board siding. The building’s east facade has five single hung windows with lights above them. Two of the windows have been broken. A smaller window opening is in the east wall of the mudroom. A wooden door Is in the south wall of the mudroom with a transom window above.The west and north facades are devoid of openings. The front gabled roof is covered with wooden shingles on the mudroom and new sheet metal roofing on the main portion of the building. A brick chimney is on the building’s north facade. A small wooden flagpole is mounted on the roof of the mudroom.

The entrance door could not be opened. The main room is separated from the mudroom by a wooden door. The floor appears to be tongue and groove softwood boards. The ceiling is covered with deteriorating fiberboard tiles; the original board ceiling is visible where the tiles have fallen. There are two chalkboards on the interior west facade and one on the south. The boards are covered with chalk graffiti from numerous oil workers who have entered the building. Two fluorescent light fixtures hang from the ceiling. Five student desks remain inside. Two appear to be 1950s vintage. The others appear older. Three propane heaters, a propane stove, and a wood stove are in the northern portion of the building.

The building is recommended eligible for the NRHP under Criterion C. The building is in relatively good condition and is one of the few remaining schoolhouses in the township; it is an excellent surviving example of the style of schoolhouses once common in rural areas of North Dakota. The property does not qualify for NRHP consideration under any other criteria; it is not associated with important events or individual in local, state, or national history (Criteria A and B). The school is unlikely to contain material remains that would provide new and significant information about education in North Dakota (Criterion D).

1. Feature Description, Integrity, Eligibility:The feature is a small rectangular utilitarian style two-hole outhouse. It is constructed with a wooden balloon frame of 2 x 4 inch boards covered with a simple drop cladding of horizontal 1 x 6 inch boards. The feature has a shed roof covered with staggered wood shake shingles. The interior is unclad with the frame exposed. The seat is split in half and has fallen into the box.

The feature is intact, but the bottom of the rear wall has started to collapse and several of the external framing boards have splintered causing the west, south, and east walls to lean. The feature is approximately five feet square with a maximum roof height of six feet.

The outhouse is a plain utilitarian building that is not associated with significant events (Criterion A) or persons (Criterion B), and is not architecturally distinctive (Criterion C). The feature is recommended eligible for the NRHP under Criterion D because there is potential for subsurface cultural deposits that might provide new information about education in North Dakota.

1. Feature Description, Integrity, Eligibility: The feature is a small rectangular utilitarian style two-hole outhouse. It is constructed with a wooden balloon frame of 2 x 4 inch boards covered with a simple drop cladding of horizontal 1 x 6 inch boards. The feature has a shed roof covered with staggered wood shake shingles. The interior is unclad with the frame exposed. The seat is split in half and has fallen into the box.

From Stanley, ND travel west on U S. Highway 2 for 29.2 miles then turn left onto 101st Avenue NW. Follow 101st for 7.8 miles. The site is located on the east side of the road.

The site is located In gently rolling terrain that descends toward the White Earth River to the east. An improved county road forms the west edge of the site. To the west are fallow fields with intermixed pasture areas. Areas to the east are pasture land. Vegetation is tall grasses. The site retains the rural setting it would have had during its period of use.

6. Summary of ALL Site Features & Evaluation of Significance:Site 32MN1041 is a newly recorded architectural site with archaeological components. It consists of an intact school, a standing two-hole outhouse, and a privy depression on the east side of County Route 9. The site is at a curve in the county road currently used for the storage of large rolls of hay. The surrounding area consists of cultivated fields and pasture. The county road forms the west edge of the site; the other boundaries were determined by feature and artifact concentrations.

The patent for the south half of the northeast quarter and the north half of the southeast quarter of Township 155N, Range 94W, Section 7 was granted to Malenius Saby on September 14, 1916 (BLM 1916). Malenius and his wife Irene were Norwegian immigrants (U.S. Census Bureau 1940). According to land ownership atlases of Mountrail County, the Sabys did not own the patented parcel of land in 1917 (Geo. A. Ogle and Co.). The land was owned by an L. L. Euje. No information was found on this person. The 1954 land ownership atlas map shows the Malenius Saby family as owners (L. Roe Directory Service), and in 1980, Irene is shown as the sole owner (American Atlas Co.). The school is shown on the 1917 and 1954 maps; however, the 1954 map shows the school in the very northeast quarter of the section. There is no evidence that the school was ever moved and the 1954 location is a mistake. The 1979 USGS topographic map shows a standing structure in the location of the school.

The main structure is a school house shown on a 1917 Mountrail County atlas. The school consists of an original one room school house that had a mud room added to the south side at a later date. The building is in fair condition and retains all original components other than a sheet metal roof that has been recently installed. The second structure is a wooden two-hole outhouse of unknown age. It has shifted slightly due to a partial collapse of its north wall. The final feature is a privy depression that is five feet to the northeast of the outhouse. This feature is described on the attached Historical Archeological form.

The site is recommended eligible for the NRHP under Criteria C and D. The school house is in fair condition; the surrounding area has changed little from its period of historic use and is one of the few standing school houses remaining in the area. It is an excellent surviving example of the style of school houses once common in rural areas of North Dakota. The presence of the outhouse contributes to the eligibility of the resource as these structures are usually absent from surviving school sites. The outhouse and the depression may contain subsurface cultural deposits.

6. Summary of ALL Site Features & Evaluation of Significance:

Site 32MN1041 is a newly recorded architectural site with archaeological components . It consists of an

intact school, a standing two-hole outhouse, and a privy depression on the east side of County Route 9.

The site is at a curve in the county road currently used for the storage of large rolls of hay. The

surrounding area consists of cultivated fields and pasture . The county road forms the west edge of the site;

the other boundaries were determined by feature and artifact concentrations.

The patent for the south half of the northeast quarter and the north half of the southeast quarter of

Township 155N, Range 94W, Section 7 was granted to Malenius Saby on September 14, 1916 (BLM

1916). Malenius and his wife Irene were Norwegian immigrants (U.S. Census Bureau 1940). According to

land ownership atlases of Mountrail County, the Sabys did not own the patented parcel of land in 1917

(Geo. A. Ogle and Co.). The land was owned by an L. L. Euje. No information was found on this person .

The 1954 land ownership atlas map shows the Malenius Saby family as owners (L. Roe Directory Service),

and in 1980, Irene is shown as the sole owner (American Atlas Co.). The school is shown on the 1917 and

1954 maps; however, the 1954 map shows the school in the very northeast quarter of the section . There is

no evidence that the school was ever moved and the 1954 location is a mistake. The 1979 USGS

topographic map shows a standing structure in the location of the school.

Schools built through public subscriptions by frontier communities, religious schools, or schools serving specific ethnic communities are more likely to be considered significant under this criterion.

B. To be eligible under criterion B a school must demonstrate a direct association with an individual important to the history of education. The school must clearly demonstrate changes in school layout, curriculum or teaching methods developed by the individual.

C. To be eligible under criterion C a school must have a distinctive architectural style, landscaping, or engineering features that demonstrate significant trends in school construction for a period and reflect contemporary ideas on the role of schools in the community.

D. To be eligible under criterion D the school must provide important information about educational history. This could include information on the material culture of education, show changes in educational practices over time or the study of ethnicity and gender roles.
