NBC OFFERS FACILITIES TO STEVENSON, IKE FOR DEBATE NEW YORK Joseph H. Me- Connel, president of the National Broadcasting Company, Friday night qffered faculties of the ra- dio and television networks of NBC to Gov. Adlai Stevenson, Democratic candidate for presi- dent, and General Dwight D. Eisenhower, Republican nominee for president, for a debate on campaign issues. McConnel told Eisenhower and Stevenson that his decision to of- fer the facUities of NBC to them for a debate came after, persis- tent press rumors that such a de- bate was being considered. In Washington, Stephen Mitchell, Democratic National Chairman, told reporters that he was going to discuss with Stevenson the pos- sibility of challenging General Eisenhower to a TV debate. Though neither candidate has replied to McConnel’s offer, it will be interesting to watch the outcome. In all certainty the at- titude of each on he Civil Rights Platform, one of the hotter issues of the contest, would be revealed. Sarah Vaughn, smooth singer of songs, Slim Gaillard, noted for his “vout” vocalizing, and Bill Harris and his all stars, appeared on “Stars in Jazz” on NBC radio on August 21 from 12:05-12:30. Slim GaUlard and his orchestra were guests on “All Star Summer* Review” August 23 on NBC-TV from 8:00-9:30. GOSPEL GROUPS ON NATION- WIDE TOUR The coun- try’s foremost Gospel singing groups, the PHgrim Travelers, Soul Stirrers and Blind Boys of Mississippi, embarked on a nation- wide tour August 21, which will embrace 101 cities throughout the country. Each group has established it- self as the most sought after singers in the religious field today. Collectively, they are expected to sing to over 50,000 people Upon the completion of the tour De- cember 1. The Pilgrim Travelers catapult- ed into national prominence with their specialty recording of “Jesus Met The Woman at The Well”, and “Mother Bowed.” The Soul Stirrers hit a new high in popu- larity when Specialty Records re- leased their recording of “Peace South Florida stock car fans are in for a night of racing on Labor Day as promoter Nick Jenin presents a big 152 lap holi- day auto card at Medley Sjfled- way, Monday night September 1. More than 100 drivers from the Greater Miami Racing Associa- tion are scheduled to vie for stock laurels at the northwest Miami oval in a combined card that will feature strictly stock and sports- man style automobiles. One of the few speedways in the country with two tracks, Med- ley will make use of both ovals as the strictly stocks run the Va mile course and the sportman speed over the one-third mile track. Climaxing the gala holiday pro- gram will be 40 and 50 lap fea- ture races for summer champion- ship honors. In the sportsman class, the lo- cal wheelmen will highlight their portion of the show with a 40- lapper on the big track. Heading the list of entries is Rod Perry, winner of the winter champion- ship race. Driving his high-pow- ered racer, Perry has rapidly es- tablished himself as one of the top stock pilots in the South. Other outstanding names who will chauffeur cars are: Alan (Rags) Carter, Charley Monk, A1 Powell, Dur Howe, Bill Flingos, Marion and Red Farmer. Bobby Johns and Banjoe Mat- thews, currently touring the In The Valley,” backed by “Jesus Gave Me Water.” The Blind Boys of Mississippi, also known as the Jackson Harmoneers, were the first religious group to make the Billboard Popularity Chart of the most played records, with their Peacock recording of “Our Father.” The groups are under exclusive management contract to Herald Attractions, Inc. of Hollywood, whose roster also includes Brother Joe May, the Sally Martin Sing- ers, The Spirit of Memphis, The Swan Silvertone Singers, The Detroiters, Sister Wynona Prof. J. CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM FETED The Baker’s Bar Softball team, winner of the District Playground Softball Tournament, held in West Palm Beach July, 1952 was feted at Virginia Key Beach on Saturday, August 23. This team was sponsored by Earl Edwards, manager of Baker’s Bar. playing of various games and swimming a delicious menu was served composed of baked ham, potato salad, buttered rolls and assorted soft drinks. Edward Mallory of Durham, N.C., lone Negro contestant, plac- ed eighth in a field of 154 cham- pions from throughout the United States, Canada and Germany. If St. Louis didn’t have him, they’d be on the bottom.” Oddly enough, Clark Griffith, owner of the Senators, has never seen the necessity of changing his Jim Crow ways even when it would mean money in his pocket. Griffith has been the target of democratic protest for the past decade, but he’s always played deaf. Many Washington observers feel that Negro baseball fans need to go on a sitdown strike against the Senators before Griff will open his ear drums. btw band in LABOR DAY PARADE As usual, the Booker T.
