More than 150,000 households across County Durham have their garden waste collected by the council and if residents have any garden waste over this winter period they can take it to one of the 15 household waste recycling centres in the county. The council collects the garden waste from households in the Easington, Sedgefield, Chester-le-Street, Durham, Derwentside and Wear Valley areas. Residents who receive the Durham County Council garden waste collection service are asked to check their collection calendar and note their final collection date for this year. Pets at Home is pledging to help pet charities in the local area as it prepares to open a new store at the Bishop Auckland Shopping Park in November. Store manager Geoff Wilson is appealing to people to nominate animal organisations or charities they would like to see partnered with the store through Support Adoption For Pets, the charity es-tablished and supported by Pets at Home. The partnerships will help ensure that as many abandoned animals as possible are re-homed into loving environments, where they will be well cared for by their new owners. Support Adoption For

Pets has raised more than £1.65 million in the past 12 months thanks to the fundraising efforts of store colleagues and customers. The money has been used to provide financial support to animal welfare charities and local re-homing centres across the UK.The new store hopes to be partnered with organisa-tions in time for the grand opening. Geoff and his team are asking people to get in touch to help find those charities that really make a difference to the welfare of pets and animals in and around Bishop Auckland. He said, “We want to be at the heart of the pet community, supporting

local charities and helping them to continue their good work, whether through in store events, fundraising or donations. “We’d love to hear from any pet welfare organi-sations and re-homing centres in the area so we can talk to them about our Support Adoption For Pets charity and how we can help their organisation.” Anyone with information on a local animal charity or organisation should contact Pets at Home via email on [email protected] stating ‘Bishop Auckland’ in the subject box, or alter-natively through Support Adoption For Pets charity manager, Amy Wilson, on 0161 486 3774.

Robert Gordon Alderson, of Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland, was seen by police to be acting suspi-ciously walking the streets at around 7am on the morning of 24th October.About six hours later police attended his address and there they found a TRAXX mountain bike. The 41 year-old admitted to taking the bike, telling police that he had been "out and about" when he saw the bike chained to a fence at the town's railway station. He had returned to his flat to get some bolt cutters before going back to the station and removing

the bike. Upon his arrest, Alderson had said that he intended to use the bike for spare parts and that he just wanted to be out of the police station by 5.30pm in order to get his methadone. The court heard that Alderson had "an appalling record" and that he was, by virtue of this latest offence, in breach of a con-ditional discharge, imposed in July for matters of theft from skips in Newgate Street. Magistrates requested a stand down report from the Probation Service before sentencing.

Primary school pupils from Bishop Auckland were recently invited to the ninth consecutive holiday activity week at Bishop Barrington school which, in partnership with Education Enterprise Legacy, are changing the landscape for community provision. The children were offered a range of activities which included dance, gymnastics and a whole variety of multi-sports.The focus of the event is always on fun, but transition, healthy lifestyles and active children are also on the agenda. Following on from the success of the summer holidays, the October programme was the school’s best attended yet, with 130 different children contributing to its ever-growing success.Lewis Marr, Managing Director said, “The children have been fantastic, their enthusiasm towards the programmes have been the most fulfilling part of the whole journey here at Bishop Barrington. “After seeing over 130 different children attend the five day programme, it really does highlight the importance of safe, structured well-planned holiday provision here in Bishop Auckland.

“We are leading the way in providing activity programmes for young people, both term time and holiday provision. “We are now in a position where we have previous pupils who have gone off to different secondary schools who have come back and helped contribute by being

'Young Leaders' who assist the staff in warm ups and provide general care and attention to the primary children, it brings together Bishop Auckland. “Our next programme will be February half term where we are hoping to attract new faces to join the fun."

Opinion divided over shopping developmentsA development company has expressed concern at the approval by Durham County Council of an expansion to an out-of-town retail park, while others have celebrated the move.Gentoo has said it fears that its own development in the town centre, on the site of the former bus station at North Bondgate, which has also been approved by the county council, may not go ahead as a result of the decision to allow four more units to be built at St Helen Auckland. However, county council-lors for St Helen Auckland argued that the two sites would bring an economic boost to the area.Cllr Rob Yorke said, “I am delighted both schemes were approved, and I really hope Gentoo carry on with their commitment to the Bondgate site. We all have to work together to make Bishop Auckland sparkle again, and there are enough retailers to fill both sites.”

Stewart Allen of Gentoo said, “I am delighted, but not surprised, that Gentoo’s scheme received planning consent. I am, however, a little dismayed that the planning committee also approved the out-of-town scheme which is in direct conflict with the town centre site.”The competing schemes have divided opinion in the town, with town and planning officers recom-mending that the out-of-town application should be refused on the grounds that it “would have an adverse impact on the vitality and viability of Bishop Auckland town centre.”Councillors dismissed the fears and ignored the planning officer’s recom-mendation. As a result of the council-lors going against these recommendations, the decision has been referred to the Secratary of State. Town Mayor, Charlie Kay, expressed his disappoint-ment at the decision, “We

need to regroup and have a rethink,” he said.“We have to go forward and secure a future for the town centre. As I have said before, doing nothing is not an option.“Town centres across the country are struggling with the very difficult economic climate and Bishop Auckland is no exception. “The last thing they need at the moment is the further expansion of out-of-town retail.”Richard Wilks of Metric Properties – the company developing St Helen Auckland – said, “Our research shows us the impact will not be on Bishop Auckland town centre, but on other retail centres like Darlington and the Metro Centre.” Do you have a view on the development of Bishop Auckland? With only eight games played last weekend for the St. Mary’s Juniors, it was a good effort with seven wins and only one loss. The Under 11 Kings had a great win against Stockton West End with a 3-1 win. The Under 9 Kings also had a great 4-1 win in the quarter final of the league cup away at Hartlepool Golden Flatts. The Under 10s had a 6-2 win over Stockton Town, while the Under 13s had a fantastic 13-0 win over Normanby in the Challenge Cup. Third Division leaders, Under 14 Kings, were involved in a very enter-taining County Cup match against 2nd Division side

On Saturday 3rd November, the team of Ben Kelly, Tom Whittaker, Zak Hutchinson and Carl Draper made the short drive over to Ormesby table tennis club in Middlesbrough to take part in the National Junior League. The boys started against one of the pre-event favourites, Hartlepool A, and despite their best efforts they lost 9-0. Next up was Ormesby B team and, again, the boys went down 9-0, but the game was closer than the score line suggests, with Ben Kelly losing a game in 5 and Tom Whittaker losing out 13-11 in the 5th on an edge ball. The third match of the day was the other pre-event favourites, the team from Northumberland. The much older team showed their experience and, again, the Bishop team lost 9-0, but a spirited performance from Carl Draper, who has only been playing for three months, really made his opponent work for their wins. The last match of the day was the best performance of the day against the Hartlepool B team. Things looked to be heading the same way

with Hartlepool heading into a 4-0 lead before Tom Whittaker, out of the blue, put in a great performance to pick up a 3-0 win and spark the team into action.Carl Draper then pushed the very promising and talented Joe Cope very hard before losing. Zak Hutchinson played out of his skin only to lose 12-10 in the 5th. Man-of-the-Match Tom Whittaker then pulled out all the stops to win a very tense five set battle over Joe Cope.Coach Matt Porter commented, “What we need to remember is that the boys have only been playing a matter of months and the players they were up against have been playing much longer than our club has been running. “I thought the boys did really well to come back at the end of a long, frustrating day to pull out some wins. “We have a month to work hard and improve and the boys now know what they are aiming at.Details of the Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club can be found at www.bishopaucklandttc.webs.com or on their Facebook page.
