In addition, the Eleven Arches Trust’s Kynren live open air night show will open this summer, taking audiences on an epic journey through 2,000 years of British history. As well as the extra parking, the council has improved access to North Bondgate and installed new barriers and lighting. With this work complete, the ongoing op- eration and management of the car park has, from April 1st, been passed to the Auckland Castle Trust. Cllr Neil Foster, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for economic regeneration and culture, added, “The amazing plans that both the Auckland Castle and Eleven Arches Trusts are putting in place promise to massively increase the number of visitors to Bishop Auckland, as well as create jobs and boost the local economy. “By expanding and improv- ing the car park, as part of our ongoing support for the array of projects, we hope to help make sure that residents and businesses benefit just as much as these very welcome new visitors.” Liz Fisher, Auckland Castle Trust’s Operations Director, said the growth of the car park and handover was “great news for Bishop Auckland and the ongoing developments that are underway in the area.” New lease of life for Bondgate car park

Audrey Henderson, from Bishop Auckland, hopes to make a birthday wish come true by getting successful pop star Gary Barlow to perform at her party.Last year, the singer ex-pressed a desire to perform at the landmark birthday parties of his fans and Audrey snapped up the op-portunity to persuade Take That’s Gary to attend hers!Mrs Henderson, who is a massive fan of Take That, and has been to see them twice at the Newcastle Arena and once at Sunder-land’s Stadium of Light said: “It would be amazing.“I’ve been a fan for 20 years. I’ve always liked Take That - Gary being my favourite.”The soon to be 50-year-old has suffered with osteoar-thritis and fibromyalgia all her life and hopes to start a new decade in a more positive manner.

“For nearly ten years I’ve been managing a lot of con-ditions,” Audrey adds.“They are hidden illnesses so I don’t look unwell but every day is a battle with pain levels and medication. “I’ve just had an operation to ease things a bit and I recently lost five stone, so if Gary comes to my party I’ll look good for him!“It has been a difficult year so I’m hoping my 50s will be a nice decade.“I’m looking forward to it and that is why we are having a big party.”The festivities - which will hopefully feature Gary Barlow - are hoped to take place at Shildon Civic Centre and will have approximately 250 guests. Audrey will have a joint birthday bash with her mother, Margaret Braes, also of Bishop Auckland, who will turn 70 a few days before her daughter turns

Help Audrey persuade Gary Barlow to attend her 50th!

50.Audrey spends a lot of time with children as a mother of three and residential childcare worker in a home in Darlington and said she might be interested in inviting some youngsters to her party if Gary Barlow is going to be there! She said: “It would be great to bring him to County Durham. It would put Shildon, Bishop Auckland and the Civic Centre on the map.” Audrey has booked two more of her favourite acts to perform on her special day: The Scandals and JD and The Woodsmen.“I love them too,” she adds.By way of incentive, Audrey has offered to buy tickets to the open air night show Kynren for the Take That star and his wife, Dawn. The offer is not entirely altruis-tic, however: the show will take place in July and might extend the singer’s visit to town! Help to make Audrey’s wishes come true by bom-barding the star’s Twitter profile @GaryBarlow, persuading him to attend Audrey Henderson’s fiftieth birthday party!

Charlotte Vizor, winner of the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists commercial nail art category, with Bishop Auckland College Principal, Natalie Davison.

Charlotte nails beauty competitionTalented nail artist Char-lotte Vizor, a student at Bishop Auckland College, has sights on a beauty therapy career after winning a national industry competition. The 23-year-old was rep-resenting the North-East in the Association of Hair-dressers and Therapists UK final at the Winter Gardens complex in Black-pool, after winning the regional final in Gateshead last month, a competition between 14 schools and colleges. And Charlotte, from Bishop Auckland, once again came out top, beating competitors from across the country with her commercial design on the theme of glamour.Charlotte, a Level 3 Diploma in Nail Technol-ogy student who is tutored by Adelle Garnett, said: “I can’t believe that I won but very glad I did. Competing is really fun but winning is even better. I am definitely looking forward to competing again.”

Geraldine Metcalf, area manager for hairdress-ing and beauty therapy, congratulated Charlotte on her achievement: “Charlotte produced an outstanding ‘glamour themed look’ in the com-mercial nail art category at the North East region-als, and the national finals at Blackpool, and was

deservedly awarded first place for her freehand work. We are very proud of Charlotte’s skills and wish her all the best with her future business plans.”Anyone interested in hair and beauty courses or who would like to make an ap-pointment for a hair orbeauty treatment should contact (01388) 443010.

At the National Champion-ships in Hatfield, Bishop Auckland Table Tennis Club (BATTC) was presented with Table Tennis England’s Table Tennis Club of the year award 2016. The awards saw Bishop Auckland beat off stiff competition from over 150 other Table Tennis England Premier clubs across the country. The judges were im-pressed with the club’s success at the community level, supporting the local community by running dementia-friendly sessions, increasing participation by increasing the number of primary school and satel-lite sessions, as well as its national successes with over 25 players on the national ranking lists. The presitigious award comes just as the club of-ficially opened their new table tennis centre on Wednesday 6th April with Table Tennis England Chair Sandra Deaton cutting the

ribbon. The centre, based at Bishop Barrington School, saw over £26,000 spent on turning the hall into a table tennis player’s dream thanks to funding from various partners both locally and nationally, including Coun-cillors Sam Zair and Joy Allen, who donated £2,500 each through their Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP neighbourhood budgets; the Scotto Trust, who donated £6,000; Table Tennis England who also

Police seize booze from anti-social youths

Some of what was seized as part of a ‘stay safe’ operation.

A large haul of bottles of lager was seized from underage drinkers after a ‘stay safe’ operation in Bishop Auckland recently.Patrols, which took place on the afternoon and evening of Thursday 25th March, were in response to a number of recent inci-dents involving anti-social behaviour from groups of youths. Police officers, alcohol harm reduction officers, members of the special constabulary, PCSOs, rep-resentatives from the fire service and street wardens were all involved in the operation.Neighbourhood Inspector Warren Edwards said, “We often plan these nights of action to take place at the commencement of school holidays because we see a rise in anti-social behav-iour at these times. While the majority of young people cause us no issues, there are certain groups who congregate in order to consume alcohol and are responsible for anti-social behaviour.

“This results, understand-ably, in complaints from the local community and an increase in demands to the emergency services.“These children are also putting themselves at risk, which is why we take action to stop their behav-iour.“The operation last week involved representatives from the fire service and follows a number of incidents where youths have been responsible for starting small fires.“On one such occasion, when fire officers attended

the scene they were then targeted by youths throwing stones.“Clearly this is unaccep-table behaviour and so we are hoping that the extra patrols, which will continue throughout the school holidays, will put a stop to it. We often find that the children causing the problems have been left unsupervised.“We would encourage parents to make suitable arrangements for their children and know where they are during the school break.”Any young person found to be under the influence of alcohol during the stay safe patrols is taken to a ‘place of safety’ where they are given suitable advice about alcohol misuse and personal safety before being collected by their parents. Those young people brought to the place of safety are also referred to Lifeline - the local alcohol service - for follow up support, advice and guidance.

Digital Voice for Communi-ties, in partnership with Woodhouse Close Church Community Centre, have announced a new course for residents. They have been supported by County Durham Commu-nity Foundation who recog-nise there is a great need for everyone to be given the skills and confidence to get online and use iPads and tablets to their own advantage. These inTouch courses have been piloted and

developed with carers in the area and now people on Woodhouse Close estate have been asking if they too can receive the training to become confi-dent using the internet to communicate with friends and family, shop online and help solve their problems using online research and communication.Commenting on the course, Julie Nicholson from Digital Voice said, “We are thrilled to have received the funding so we can deliver

this life-changing course to those who need it the most and are confident the project will empower local people to improve their lives.”John Wiseman, Woodhouse Close Church Community Centre Co-ordinator, said, “I'm delighted to be con-tinuing our partnership with Digital Voice follow-ing a successful pilot last year. People from our area, including the hundreds of regular users of our Centre, tell us that they want - and need - to improve their IT skills. This is an ideal op-portunity to do just that, and we expect that many will seize it. As a local community hub, it will also help us to meet the aspira-tions of local people whilst doing our bit to reduce the digital divide.”Anyone interested in the course - running from April 13th for six consecu-tive Wednesdays, 1pm to 3pm, at Woodhouse Close Church Community Centre - should call 01388 450838 or 01207 438718.
