WELCOME TO CINCINNATI

THE HOME OF THE 66TH

Welcome to the first issue of the E-Magazine

for the 66th NSDC®. If you’re a long time reader,

then you know that this is place to get all the latest

information on the upcoming National Convention in

Cincinnati. If you are a new reader, keep reading

and exploring and share the link with all of your friends.

Beverly and I have been working on all the details for this event since

2013 after we received the bid at the Oklahoma convention. Our various

chairmen and their committees have worked very hard to make this the best

convention! Not only so our guest will have a great dance venue, but also to

host it in a place with so many other great things to experience. Many

people come from across the country and around the world to not only

dance, but also to get a sense of what our Midwest USA / Cincinnati region is

all about. That is why we have chosen the tag line “Cincinnati - A Great

American Experience”.

Two quick notes: One for the round dance folks. The Roundalab

Convention will precede our convention in our host hotel. This should make

it easy for all our favorite cures to attend our convention. There will also be

a GSI Caller School on the front end of the 66th NSDC® to attract new and

experienced callers.

Last but not least, be on the lookout in your email box for additional

details on the 66th NSDC®. These will be short pinpoint extra information

about special events and happenings that you may want to know about. E-

mail is so timely these days that we can get new information out to all of

you in a matter of minutes and include links to details that can help you stay

informed. We know you will enjoy “Cincinnati - A Great American

Experience”!

See you soon at a Square or Round dance!

Getting to Know US….Cincinnati

Majestically regal, Cincinnati sits elegantly resplendent on the north bank of the

Ohio River and is fondly known as the Queen City of the Midwest. Founded in

December 1778 and incorporated as a city in 1819, Cincinnati's German heritage is

as widely celebrated today as it was 200 years ago. Always a river city,

Cincinnati's early economic development and prime location on the Ohio River

played a major role as steamboats and barges transported goods south to Louisville

or east to Pittsburgh creating a bridge for industrial growth and development.

Historically unique and beautifully crafted Italianate Architecture located in Over

the Rhine and in many aristocratic buildings such as Music Hall and The

Cincinnatian Hotel bring an old age charm to a new age city bursting at the seams

in economic development. A genuine southern hospitality welcomes travelers

from across town and across the world to the little, big city in the Midwest that is

home to 300,000 people.

Getting to Know US….Cincinnati (continued)

The home of the 66th NSDC® is the Duke Energy Convention Center and, as the

name implies, energy is what this exciting venue is all about. Located downtown

in the heart of the Queen City, the beautiful and contemporary Duke Energy

Convention Center features over 750,000 s.f. and is designated just for the 2017

NSDC. Your Round Dancing experience in the stunning Grand Ballroom will

make you feel like you are truly 'Dancing with the Stars'.

Three main host hotels located within steps of the Duke Energy Convention Center

will offer our dancers all the comforts of home in a luxury setting. Five new hotels

providing more than 3000 additional rooms are in the planning stages and will be

open when Ohio welcomes you to the Midwest.

Getting to Know US….Cincinnati (continued)

The economy in Cincinnati has exploded in recent years with the development of

the Ohio Riverfront including over 2 billion dollars in new infrastructure featuring

the new Banks projects, redevelopment of Smale Riverfront Park, the opening of

the Horseshoe Casino and, of course, Great American Ball Park, home of the

Cincinnati Reds and Paul Brown Stadium, home of the Cincinnati Bengals. With

over 200 unique and exciting shops and boutiques at your fingertips and your

choice of dining pleasure from frugal to fabulous, Cincinnati is a city that rocks . . .

yellow rocks that is.

At the Cincinnati Museum Center you can visit with Cleopatra or indulge your

own creativity at the Contemporary Arts Center. The Queen City invites you to

experience our big city adventures with small town convenience and affordability.

In July 2012 the Queen City proudly hosted the 7th annual Interkultur World Choir

Games welcoming 15,000 participants from 64 countries and 362 competing choirs

to a two week celebration of music, song and international hospitality.

We as dancers share that same excitement and just like it was 2012, Cincinnati will

welcome all of our dancing friends to the "City that Dances". The people of

Cincinnati are the jewels in the crown of the Queen City, warm and welcoming,

fun and friendly, caring and carefree.

Southern hospitality starts on this side of the Ohio River and

every visitor to the Queen City will be treated like a King.

Getting to Know the Program Chairmen

DANCE PATTER with Ken & Myrna:

Hello from Ken & Myrna Allen! We are your Program Chairmen for the 2017 National Square

Dance Convention in Cincinnati, OH. This is the 1st in a series of a monthly article under the

byline of DANCE PATTER with Ken & Myrna. For each of the next nine months, Myrna and I will

be providing an article for National Squares Online magazine. Each month we will focus on

some aspect of the convention program that you may find of interest. Also, there will be a

DANCE PATTER tab on our website, http://66nsdc.com/, which will be updated with this same

information and more. We will be listing all of the callers that are registered, so check it out

periodically for the latest information. This first month is a teaser, which includes information

about what we are doing to make Cincinnati 2017 someplace you will like to go, as well as an

introduction to Myrna and me. Future articles will address our revamped approach to

competition squares, specific hall information, levels of dance, and exhibitions.

Myrna and I are proud and very pleased to have the opportunity to be scheduling your dances

for you. There will be 9 dance halls with plenty of enjoyable dancing from Mainstream through

C2 as well as Rounds through Phase 6; all from many of the best dance leaders in the world!

Helping us do this work as Vice Chairmen are some great callers and cuers who have been

attending National Conventions for many years. We all are pledging ourselves to make your

trip to Cincinnati worthwhile.

In the future we will introduce you to the Vice Chairmen who are specifically scheduling the

halls. I will have them each give you some insight into their plans.

When we get closer and more of the dance leaders have completed their registration and paper

work, we will tell you about the great callers we have lined up. Currently we have registrations

from big names known in the more popular halls (Mainstream – Plus) like Tony Oxendine, Scot

Page 24: NATIONAL SQUARES E -MAGAZINE

24

Getting to Know the Program Chairmen (Continued from prior page)

Byars, Dee Dee Dougherty, and names equally well known in the various challenge halls like Ken

Ritucci and Barry Clasper. There are many, many excellent callers at all levels who have verbally

committed but who don’t quite have their paperwork submitted, so I can’t mention them yet.

As the title of the article suggests, let us now tell you a little bit about your Program Chairmen.

Myrna and I live in Beavercreek, Ohio, a suburb east of Dayton. We completed Plus classes in

1997. We currently square dance through the C2 level. While we started attending weekends

within two years of our Plus class completion, since our retirement, 2012, we have been gone

for months at a time going to square dance weeks and weekends. We spent January and

February in McAllen, TX where we danced 16 times per week! During our dance tenure we

have been to 8 National Square Dance conventions, attended many state conventions in the

Midwest region, and participate in operations of 2 local clubs and a weekly workshop. The

bottom line is that we have had significant exposure to what happens in the dance community

and the callers, and think we can bring you a program that will be worth your time and money.

Myrna and I are looking forward to seeing you in Cincinnati in 2017; and hopefully, before then

at a dance, weekend, or festival from California, to Texas, Florida, or, Ohio.

Ken and Myrna Allen
